I have a question for the fanfic writers among you: How do you treat your work in progress when a very similar story is put out there? Do you go on writing - in the spirit that everything is unique in its own way - or do you abandon the piece - in the spirit of preventing 'superfluous' contributions?
Let's add a further wrench into the process by saying the recently published work by another author, so similar to your own, seems so much better written than your own (granted we are always our own worst critics). Where do you go with that?
Maybe this is a question for readers, too. Do you mind reading similar works/story lines?

I'm used to being able to pick up world-building concepts pretty easily, so watching a show where I know some of the background (living armor being a common fantasy trope, some of the monsters being mythological etc.) but not exactly what and how the specific dungeon crawling genre version of those things is being subverted is jarring

speaking as someone who likes anime, the things preventing me from falling-head-over-heels into delicious in dungeon (the show -- I haven't tried the manga) do include that it's sometimes too anime or too d&d: the over-the-top dialogue doesn't always work for me, although the humor often does. I sometimes feel I'm missing a lot of the jokes, and, therefore, that the entire "dungeon adventurer" concept could be dropped in favor of a fantasy world that just happens to have a monster-infested buried castle in it. that's a cool concept that doesn't require me to understand how slimes usually work! but that's like saying that no one should ever intentionally work within any given genre, which is unreasonable. I feel ... fomo!! for not having played (or not having played in a long time) the sort of games that the series is clearly riffing on

Still obsessed with Arthur Conan Doyle’s letter to Bram Stoker gushing about how wonderful a book Dracula is, but particularly how it makes such a good template for leaving fic comments, so I’m gonna to a BREAKDOWN:
Just say you loved reading it - “I am sure that you will not think it an impertinence if I write to tell you how very much I have enjoyed reading Dracula.”
Comment on a detail of the craft or structure that impressed you - “It is really wonderful how with so much exciting interest over so long a book there is never an anticlimax.“
Comment on how it emotionally affected you - “It holds you from the very start and grows more and more engrossing until it is quite painfully vivid.”
SHARE YOUR BLORBO FEELINGS - “The old Professor is most excellent and so are the two girls.”
Show appreciation for them as an author - “I congratulate you with all my heart for having written so fine a book.”
Next time you don’t know what to say on a fic you enjoyed, just use the ACD method~

a raven father (i call him "pants") I've been feeding sometimes likes to sit outside my window and either wait for more food or just listen to the stuff I'm watching while I draw. Today's a colder day so he likes to fluff up a bit, and I kid you not :

More Mundane Guardian Asks
[part one]
What area do they like patrolling and how often do they patrol there?
If they play Crucible, who would they 1v1 (eg Ikora)? If they don't play, what would Shaxx try to bribe them with?
Do they belong to a faction other than the Vanguard (Dead Orbit, New Monarchy, Future War Cult, Praxic Order, the Hidden, Iron Lords, Dredgens, etc)? Is the Vanguard their main faction?
How often do they interact with civilians/non-Guardians?
Do they have a nickname? Who gave it to them?
Do they play an instrument? Are they good at it? (Yes, spoons count.)
Do they have any intolerances or allergies? Do they have any other restrictions about themselves or their Light?
What's the weirdest dish/drink they've tried (eg hákarl)?
Dogs, cats, another type of pet, or none?
Would they be a biker, car enthusiast, or equestrian?
