A/N: this little thingy plays after my one-shot (Rosie's) Elephant in the Room. can be read without it but i personally love it hehe xD

oh and this got a bit long because apparently sherlock had to be all deep about it??? and then i was like "UGH! now HOW do i make this fluffy again?😩" (i did, very much, make it fluffy again 🙃)

John was sitting on a bench, legs crossed, his face towards the warm summer sun, eyes closed.

He breathed in,

and out.

And he couldn't be happier than right in this moment. People were loud, animals too. 'The loudest animals are still humans, even in a zoo', he thought and smiled at this.

"What are you smiling about over there?", his best friend, his soulmate, his everything asked him.

With the smile still on his lips, John slowly opened his eyes and watched Sherlock Holmes - his one and only - approach him.

"Everything." John replied, smile only widening at seeing the man walking, knowing he - John Hamish Watson - was his destination.

"Rosie absolutely adores elephants.", Sherlock said. The magical dreamy moment was fading into something else with this statement: John came back to the here and now. It wasn't something bad, things just... shifted.

"She does. Why do you think she's got that horrible giant elephant plushy?"

"Don't be so hard on Ellie Phant Astic. She was the reason we got together after all."

John hummed. "And I'll forever be grateful for that."

They just sat together for a while... watching Rosie giggle and laugh and jump at the sight of the elephants playing in the water. They enjoyed the sun, the easiness, the happiness that nature brings. Their hands lazily intertwined, no rush, no worries, just enjoying being a (nearly) normal family at the zoo.

John felt Sherlock's gaze shift, observing every detail of the people around them.

"It's funny isn't it?", the tall man asked suddenly.

"What is?", John countered, already fearing to hear about the weirdest things people around them did.

"Humans visiting the zoo." Sherlock said.

"How do you mean?"

"They run from one cage to the next, ooh-ing and aah-ing - for- what? One day a year? As far as I am concerned 85% of these people don't give one single damn about any of these animals, when they get home. They laugh at the monkeys, they point at colorful birds, they squeal at the sight of any animal younger than a year. They don't care that most of them are endangered, their biggest threat being humans. And then- look!"

Sherlock pointed at a pigeon next to them. "They hate those. Call them 'flying rats' even. Compare one disliked animal to another slightly more disliked animal. Who decides which birds are pretty enough to be caged up? Who decides you can use rats as an experiment for cosmetic products? They claim that pigeons and rats and insects are nasty and deserve to die. If you ask me - humans are the species the most disgusting. Blaming everything except themselves. It's depressing, really."

John stayed silent for a long while. "I guess you're right...", he replied, deep in thoughts.

Soon, they grabbed Rosie by her hands and took her to the aquarium. She was so happy to see all the funny animals: seals, dolphins, sharks, jellyfish, clown fish,... But the animals that fascinated her most, were the sea turtles. With their big body, colorful shell and slow movements they looked silly, but majestic at the same time. Her enthusiasm showed through first squealing, then jumping, then silently sitting in front of the glass of the aquarium and just looking at the animal on the other side of the glass, opposite of her.

John had forgotten about their serious conversation earlier and was lost in looking at his daughter. Her love for elephants (and apparently turtles) was infectious. When he turned to look at his boyfriend, to see if he felt the same way, his breath caught. There he was, Sherlock Holmes, first and only consulting detective, eyes twitching trying to catch all the fast and slow aquatic animals. John wrapped his arm around his boyfriend's waist and murmured. "I didn't know you were such an animal lover, babe."

Sherlock shot him a quick gaze, then turned his head to look at a beautiful sand tiger shark slowly drifting past in front of their faces. "How could I not be?", Sherlock whisperd reverently.

John let his head fall onto Sherlock's shoulder and suddenly grinned: He had an idea.

A few months later - for their first anniversary, Sherlock got post. It was a thick envelope. Sherlock stared at it. His face was in horror.

"John. It says 'Happy Anniversary'."

"Oh, how nice. Who is it from?"

"Do people actually do that? Send 'Happy Anniversary' post?", you could almost see the disgust dripping from Sherlock's voice.

"Just open it, honey.", John tried.

Sherlock's face clearly said it wanted to do anything but that, however upon seeing John's encouraging (pleading?) look, he did.

Sherlock went through the postcards. First dismissively, then confused, then curiously. He looked up at John. "Did you do this?"

John smiled and nodded. "We have officially symbolically adopted a manta ray, a sea turtle and a blue shark."

"That- is- that is fantastic. Thank you, John.", emotion sneaking its way into Sherlock's voice.

John got up and hugged his boyfriend. "Would have gotten you a pigeon, too, but you seemed a bit more enthusiastic about the sea life."

Sherlock laughed softly. "You're an idiot."

"But I'm your idiot.", John grinned into the hug.

"And I'm not sharing my idiot."

John scoffed. "Happy Anniversary to you too, Sherlock."

Oh and Rosie? Rosie ran around their flat, Ellie Phant Astic under her arms, happy tears running down her face, upon hearing the news.

Hey Steph! I hope you’re doing well! I have sort of a specific fic request.

I’ve really being struggling a lot with feeling like I just don’t belong anywhere and I wish I had someone who liked everything that people hate about me. I know it’s often mentioned in fics that the whole “freak” thing gets to Sherlock a lot, as he is also a bit not normal, but do you know any fics where they make that more centered? And perhaps some comfort from our favorite army doctor. I’ll take anything you’ve got.
