An expected answer.  However, it was often difficult to tell how the younger man would react to invitations of company, the various activities of such situations often not suited to the other's tastes.  Overseeing soldiers in military training, though, was something that the prince of the Ren family had foreseen as appealing to the magi.
Kouen turned and continued on his way, not waiting for the raven-haired youth to make any motion of following.  "Have your days as of late been particularly lackluster?"

"I don’t have anything to do right now. It’s actually quite boring outhere." He yawned to emphasize his words. "I guess that’d be a good idea then." Judar purred looking at the prince.

Everything leading up to their departure had been progressing smoothly.  As Kouen approached the docks and spotted his brother, he dismissed his entourage and made his way over to the younger male, his trademark confidence punctuating every stride.  A promising wind filled the port, hope for a speedy journey tugging at him like a restless child.
Tumblr media
Approaching Koumei, expression detached and unbetraying of any such optimism, he spoke up over the clamour of their productive surroundings.  Crimson eyes regarded the shorter man briefly before turning to survey the goings-on of the area.  "Then we should be off soon.  It looks as though some cargo remains, but we should be setting sail within the hour, as planned."
Sliding his eyes to study his brother, he continued, voice barely dropping in volume, "Your shoulders were hunched before I approached you.  Are you feeling prepared for this trip?"

His brother had about as much to worry about as himself at this point. What with Balbadd and so on. Everyone’s eyes were now focused on the Kou it seemed. Because of the Al Tharmen. Because of Gyokuen, because of the events in Magnostadt and because of Balbadd. It wasn’t the best situation to be in at the moment, but the tactician was working on it. Especially with matters concerning Balbadd and Sindria. A certain violet haired king had been requesting meeting after meeting with him. It was a bit tedious but valid points were exchanged. He was slowly adding things up and setting the board how he wanted.
That aside, his crimson hues then focused on the male, snickering at the mention of not seeing him until their departure. “I’m sure we won’t be quite that bad with our work, but I suppose your right. Leave everything to me alright?” Honestly, his brother was no better than him sometimes. And he’d noticed the habit even spreading to their youngest sister. Honestly, the way this family was going, they’d be more known as the workaholics of the Kou rather than the demons of Kou-
As amusing as that was, that was the last thing they needed. Though as one of the attendants came up to them, he gave a soft sigh.
'Ouji-sama. You're needed for another council.'
"Very well." He waved to the woman and glanced to his brother with something of a smile. "Well, it seems I’ll be busy. See you in a bit Nii-sama." With a pat to his brother’s shoulder, he walked off to attend yet another war council on the matter of Sindria.
Tumblr media
A few days passed after that, the prince having grown just a bit anxious. It’d been a while since he’d left the Kou, and especially to Balbadd, however, he was perfectly content with returning at his brother’s side. He felt a bit safer that way as well. It wasn’t as if he were defenseless or anything, but at the same time, he preferred being at his brother’s side.
So as he watched the cargo being loaded onto the ships from the docks, he glanced over a scroll he held, making sure that everyone was being packed accordingly- that was, until he noticed his brother. “Ah- Nii-sama!” When the male was just arriving, the younger of the two walked over and offered him a reassuring smile. “I believe everything is prepared for us to leave.”

Sharp optics narrowed on the magi as they watched the male's pondering expression flicker.  Judal certainly seemed tempted by the prospect, although something appeared to be holding him back.  The task, Kouen knew, was appealing to his interests, though perhaps it was not exciting enough to suit his current mood?
'You really don't expect me to hang around your stuck up sisters, do you?'
Ah.  So that was it.
"I hardly expect you to entertain their company for longer than it takes to deliver what was asked for," the prince waved dismissively.  "However, clearly this request is unsuited to you.  It's understandable enough, really; the Oracle of Kou isn't a deliveryman made to wait on princesses."
The scarlet-haired man settled comfortably where he stood, arms crossing over his abdomen.  An almost scrutinising gaze was fixed on the magi, a heavy silence left to hover between them for a moment.  If excitement was what Judal was looking for, then...
Tumblr media
"How does the idea of joining my brother in leaving with me for Balbadd sit with you?  We are to depart in three days.  While it doesn't fix your current restlessness, it should serve as more of a drawn-out solution."  Not to mention that having a magi in their presence would serve to bolster their sway over the people there.  Not necessarily in a threatening way -- though that stood as a possibility should anything get out of hand for any reason -- but those wielding power have since time immemorial held strong influence over those possessing less than them, and while perhaps a bit overdone, having so many dominating figures gathered in one place for even a brief amount of time may serve to smooth out the progression of affairs in the other country.
Straightening his posture, Kouen continued, "You may take the offer or leave it, though for the time being it is open to you."
Tumblr media
【 ❦ 】—The magi grinned at this statement as he looked up at the elder male with great interest. The single term of ‘peaches’ caught his attention like a dog being given a new treat. The delectable fruit was among one of his favorites in the empire. Hell it was probably the only thing he really ate at this point.  It made him wonder how he kept himself up and health with his irregular diet. Ah, maybe it was because of the Rukh. Who knows, right? He had thought about stealing some peaches from the tree earlier, but he didn’t need the Al Thamen or the Ren siblings getting onto him for his actions. Then again when has he ever cared about getting caught? Oh yeah, he didn’t care so much about it. It just wasn’t in his personality really. If he did, then there was something really wrong with the magi, that’s one thing that can be for certain.
【 ❦ 】—His mind soon slipped into his thoughts as he wondered if he should go with the other males suggestion. Well he wouldn’t be getting trouble with the elder male if he was the one who suggested it in the first place. He mutely nodded his head before looking back up at the other. The suggestion was very tempting…he had so many urges to just simply accept and get on with his day full of peaches and sleep. Yeah, the temptation was really killing him. But was there really no other option that the redhead could give him. Nothing at all?? He was then caught off guard by the final part of Kouen’s explanation. Was he seriously expecting him to go talk to one of his stuck up sisters? Judal let out an annoyed scoff before shaking his head. The only person he really got along with was Kougyoku. But then again they practically grew up with one another.
【 ❦ 】—”You really don’t expect me to hang around your stuck up sisters, do you? I thought it was fairly obvious that I couldn’t stand them, the old hag being an exception of course.” The magi began. “I’ll steal some, but there’s no way I’m putting up with one of them.”

"Ah, Oracle," Entei greeted curtly as he turned to face the one approaching him.  The Magi of Kou certainly seemed to be in good spirits, if nothing else.  Good.  That would making speaking with him all the more easy.  "I have just finished a large block of work and was going to oversee the training of some of the soldiers."
Regarding him in silent evaluation, the imperial prince took a moment before adding on to his words.  "You are welcome to join if you have nothing better to do, of course."

If it isn’t the first prince, Kouen!” He strolled right to the other smirking. “How come you don’t have anything to do right now?”

"Is that so?  Understandable," he replied easily, walking over to a nearby bench to settle himself down.  Crimson eyes stared flatly at his young step-brother, however, a quiet dare written in their depths.  "Though, what if I decided to stay?  Would that deter you from your practice?"

"No, I don’t think so. I’m in the middle of my practice as you can see. And I prefer doing it without anyone bothering me." He knew his manner of speaking wasn’t quite appropriate in front of his cousin but he couldn’t care less about something like that.

On the Dark Wings of a Messenger || Kouen and Koumei
When the news came, the two brothers had been far from the Kou palace. With designs to carve out their futures proudly, there was little hesitation in Kouen's acceptance of the order to campaign against a people bordering the Empire's sphere of influence.  Having the power of two Djinn already, how could they fail?
Things had been going so well, the operation having been underway for a mere two weeks before the victor in the struggle was made clear.  All that was left was the outcome itself, and the Fifth Prince of Kou held little doubt that a surrender was imminent.  Losses were low, morale was high, and there seemed to be few things that could dent their momentum.
               Then the messenger arrived.
Kouen had been in the midst of a war council, his brother at his side, when the guards had let in a man who's haggard appearance was startling enough.  Through chapped lips and a ragged breathlessness that staggered his words, the male delivered a message that sent a shock of ice through the nineteen-year-old general's veins.  The world around him seemed to come to a halt, vision so focused on the courier that the majority of everything else in his line of sight darkened into the background.
'Emperor Ren. . . Hakutoku. . . of the Kou Empire, and First and Second Princes. . . Ren Hakuyuu and Ren Hakuren h-have. . . been killed in an uprising.'
Tumblr media
                                                                          How...?
'The. . . presence of the Fifth and Sixth princes--'  Cough, wheeze, a deep inhale.  '...Has been ordered.  As soon as their duties here have come to a close, they are to return to the capital immediately.'
Even after dismissing the meeting and sending the travel-worn man to be tended to, the message rang and repeated in his mind.  Alone in the council tent, the only other presence that of his younger brother, the shocked prince slowly sat back into his chair, one elbow resting on the table, fingers digging into crimson hair as his head bowed.

[Though an open starter was written, the mun has to disappear for a good portion of the rest of the day.  However~ I have a large handful of lengthy drafts to work on later, and one or two private starters to make.  Nothing has been forgotten or discarded!  Thank you for your patience...!]

| A Hopeful Prospect | (open)
The day's responsibilities done to a satisfactory degree, the eldest son of the Ren clan placed a small stack of scrolls upon the dark wood of the desk before him as he settled into his seat in the private study room.  The sun had long since set, and while though he suspected to make quick work going over the papers that were given to him.
Under normal circumstances, this would not be an area of jurisdiction that the First Prince of Kou concerned himself with, however, he had received word that there were some interesting attendees at this year's imperial examinations.  Names and observations had evidently been taken note of, ones deemed "relevant to his interests" accumulated into the small pile before him.
Tumblr media
Resting a cheek on the backs of his knuckles, the crimson-haired commander used a free hand to slide the pile slightly to the side, bringing the topmost parchment in front of him and opening it to view the contents.  Eyes scanned the hurried writing with little sign of interest, though he took note of the almost peculiar observations the observers had judged worthy of notice.  The results of the examination itself were unknown to Kouen at this time, though he recalled the minister who had produced these saying that while one or two of the applicants noted in the documents showed little aptitude for office, there was something else that stood out about them.  Hopes for a militaristic route, perhaps, and lacking a point in the right direction.
This one was listed as seeming to have a timid or nervous disposition.  If he wasn't suited for civil service and seemingly lacked the backbone to succeed militaristically, then why take note of him to begin with?
       'Of common wealth...'
                                    'Poor educational background...'
How irritating.  Still, the man in charge of this was a trustworthy individual, his natural intuition moreso.  Closing up the scroll, Entei set it aside, instead readying his ink and brush and pulling out a blank document.  He had been advised to speak with at least a few of these hopefuls in person, and a mild curiosity had gripped him in regards to such a supposedly unremarkable individual.
Upon finishing drafting a straightforward summons, he set it aside and pulled forward the next informal assessment.
Tumblr media
Ah...  He recognised this name.  A capable prospect both in office and in martial regard.  So this person had finally decided to take the examination, did they?  It was long called-for, in the prince's opinion.  He didn't have to finish reading the report to begin drafting a similar call for audience.
The list continued, some more outstanding than others.  Not all drew Kouen's attention enough to earn his desire to meet them, though those that were ignored were set aside for further perusal after he had received some rest.  With any luck, those he sent for would take no time in responding in person.
