Hobie Brown's Slang

Okay, here is a bit of criticism and advise for how to write Hobie Brown's (from Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse) speech patterns.

When I read fics on Hobie Brown, the slang that he uses is not AT ALL the type of slang he uses in the movie. Fics like to use stereotypical British slang like 'wanker' or 'gheezer' and while it is sometimes said, it's not used often by youth in the UK nowadays.

Instead, the type of slang he uses is called 'Road' slang or 'Roadman' slang. I believe it's a mixture of Jamaican and British terms (please do correct me if I'm wrong, I may be British myself but I don't know everything).

For example, in the movie, Hobie says 'man like Miles, my guy!' after Miles goes against the Canon event. He's basically hyping Miles up - the term 'man like' is often followed up by a name to (as said before) hype that person up and praise them, in a way.

Another example of him using road slang is when he calls Miles a 'youngen' - it's quite obvious what he means by it, he's basically calling him a kid. This term is usually used by people who are quite a bit older than the recipient. In fact, it was his use of this term that solidified my theory of him being quite a few years older than Miles and thus, of him not being as much of a potential love interest for Gwen as an older brother figure for her.

Now, how do you write road slang? By learning it through watching people who use it often and understanding the context.

Some real people you can watch and learn the speech patterns of Hobie Brown through include:

KSI (the youtuber)

Mo Gilligan (the comedian)

Babatunde Aléshé (also a comedian)

And a series on Netflix that I highly recommend you watch in order to really understand the way he talks (though the above examples are good ways too) is the series 'Top Boy'. Though, a fair warning that it's quite the violent series due to it being about UK gangs.

Please keep in mind that this post is NOT AT ALL made to attack writers or put them down for the way they write Hobie, it is only here to inform and teach you how to write his speech patterns properly because he 100% deserves the accurate representation.

Hobie Brown is an amazing character that made me so happy to see on screen because he actually seems like a guy I would know and be friends with in real life rather than a stereotypical depiction of a British person that you see often in media nowadays. I feel the same way about Pavitr and the way the movie didn't stereotypically depict South Asians.

To see both my ethnicity and nationality being accurately depicted on western media is just an amazing feeling that I wish to convey to you all.

Okay I see Mr. Huggles as a bit of yandere- with his scary and murderous like first view, I don't think he'd be like that normally

Like I said he has yandere tendencies- like starting with how the game goes, he'd probably get mad and start going for the protagonist because he wanted to protect you- he didn't want you to be taken away from him.

He would always make sure your okay and that you were safe

He's very cuddly :) hence his name- he loves hugs and cudsles, pretty much any physical affection he can get.

While he is very tall- he'd most definitely puc you up and just hold you while you cling to his fur lol.

He likes scratches, like on his head and under his chin- he'll do the thing and stick his tongue out and close his eyes and purr lol

okay so honestly I feel like once hes out of the game(with you letting him out-) he'd honestly be confused and almost scared😭😭

he's happy about being out of the console but..after all that time, hoping to be let out and the constant fear that his code might break leving his trapped there..it took quiet a toll on him

I'm sure you'd wonder why and how someone was trapped in the game- but you had a demon to comfort so you left the questions for later😀

once hes acually calmed down enough he'd start asking some questions, being slow to open up to you-

asking things like ,,where am i?,, or ,,who are you?,, simple stuff

you'd of course answer and ask your few questions, also simple things to not overwhelm the poor guy😭😭😭

once he felt comfortable enough he'd start to get to know you better! he now lives with you so sometimes he'd watch you around the house just doing simple things- it intrested him how humans do things...

and you honestly didnt mind him- sure he was a demon but he seemed nice enough BRBDBD

it wouldn't be until at least a few months past that he'd start letting lose with his personality-

cat like, clingy, cocky the whole shabam EBEVEBDB

he'll like walk up to you while your sitting on the couch watching TV and demand pets😭😭 and if you dont complie-- he will lay on you-

I headcannon his scalp, wings, and horns to be super sensitive so he is hesitant to let you pet him-

But once you do it he’s literally all over you-

If you do that thing where you like cup his cheek and pet his cheek fluff he’ll like grab your wrist gently and lean into your hand-

He’ll be the softest thing after you start petting him

Think of an aggressive puppy until you give it love, cuddles, and pets

Sometimes he’d come to you and like put his head onto your chest as a way of asking you to pet him

He honestly really loves your soft touches and comfort, it’s just amazing to him^^

Dating whitty is…eventful to say the least

I’d probably take you a long time to get him to trust you let alone for him to even think about love and stuff-

The confession would be strange- him not really knowing what love is, he came to you and told you about these weird feelings and ends up accidentally confessing-

You’d have to explain what dating is

“I just feel this way when I’m around you- like I want to be with you all the time” “so you like me?” “ what’s that m e a n?”

But once you’ve explained it and he realized what this was about, he was very hesitant -

It’s not that he didn’t feel certain about you, it’s just with T.G.G and him himself

He has a lot of self doubt and feels like he couldn’t just settle down with the person he loved- you’d get hurt-

You’d have to reassure him a lot-

But once he got comfortable enough around you he is the biggest cuddle bug you’ve ever seen— literally -

I swear this man is on you every part of the day, always wanting to hold onto you and hug you- after being on the run for so long, he never got to get any love or affection

That first hug, he held onto you for 30 minutes just trying not to cry-

Lots of sleeping- this man loved to be in a soft comfortable bed with you where he can cuddle you and kiss you all day

For what ever they did I’m not going to leave this fandom, not because I support what ever bad thing they did- but because I honestly just love this game and mods that people have done. The good part of this fandom have done so many creative things and made this fandom blow up- I don’t want to get rid of that. I will say that while I don’t support the majority of this fandom, There is a small part that’s okay and respectful :))
