Toki Pona Lesson 3.5 - Nouns and Adjectives
toki!
Today, I'll be teaching you some grammar.
As we all know, li is a grammar word that can be roughly equated to 'is'. ijo li ijo means something is something. But how do we say 'of'? A book of animals is simply lipu soweli. That's right! There's no need to say 'of'!
This NOUN + NOUN is similar to the NOUN + ADJECTIVE rule. tis means that you use the noun first, aka the thing you are describing, and then the adjective, akak the describing word. For example, a small house is tomo lili.
Try to translate these to practice! Find the literal translation, and say what you think they could mean in different terms.
Here's an example:
tomo suli means 'large building' and could be used as a way to say 'a mansion'.
Now it's your turn!
jan pona
meli lili
telo suli
I hope you learned something new! If there are any ways I could improve, please let me know, and don’t hesitate to ask any questions!
mi tawa and happy pride month!

Toki Pona Lesson 3.3 - Nouns and Adjectives
toki!
Today, I'll be teaching you another new word!
Today's word is: lili - (LEE-lee)
lili means little, or small
Here is lili in a sentence:
tomo li lili
This means:
The house is small
The literal translation:
House (is) small
Adding lili as an adjective to words such as animal, person, man, or woman, can indicate that the thing you are talking about is a child or baby. So meli lili (little woman) would be ‘girl’.
I hope you learned something new! If there are any ways I could improve, please let me know, and don’t hesitate to ask any questions!

Toki Pona Lesson 2.7 - Words and Sentences
toki!
We’ve finished learning all of this lesson’s words! That means it’s time for some translations. I’ll do some translations to show you the sentence structure we’re working with, and then it’ll be your turn.
All translations are from the book or variations of them.
1: ijo li ijo - something is something
2: ni li lipu - this is a book
3: soweli li meli - the animal is a female
4: Blueberries are things - kili li ijo
5: This is a piece of paper - ni li lipu
6: The woman is a person - meli li jan
Now it’s your turn! You can do it!
1: This is a person
2: This is a banana (fruit)
3: The person is a woman
4: soweli li ijo
5: meli li jan
6: lipu li ijo
How do you think you did? Was it easy or hard? What do you think needs some practice? These questions are important to consider when learning anything!
As always, let me know if there’s anything I could improve on or if you have any questions!
mi tawa and happy pride month!

Toki Pona Lesson 2.5 - Words and Sentences
toki!
Today, I'll be teaching you a new word in Toki Pona.
Today's word is:  soweli - (SO-well-ee)
soweli means animal, or land mammal (there is another word for fish/water animals which we will look at later, but we can just use soweli telo for now if need be. The point still comes across).
Here is in a sentence:
ni li soweli mi
This means:
This is my animal
The literal translation:
this (is) animal my
The grammar here looks more complex than it actually is! We’ve spoken before about the descriptor going after the word we are describing with telo kili vs kili telo. It’s the same thing! Instead of saying ‘my animal’ we just swap it around to get ‘animal my’, or soweli mi. Simple, right?
I hope you enjoyed this lesson. If there are any ways I could improve, please let me know, and don’t hesitate to ask any questions!
mi tawa and happy pride everyone!

Toki Pona Lesson 2.4 - Words and Sentences
toki!
Today, I'll be teaching you a new word in Toki Pona.
Today's word is: lipu  - (LEE-poo)
lipu means ‘document’. It can refer to any kind of document, such as a book.
Here is in a sentence:
ni li lipu
This means:
This is a book.
The literal translation:
This (placeholder that roughly equates to ‘is’) document (book, in this case).
I hope you learnt something new. If there are any ways I could improve, please let me know, and don’t hesitate to ask any questions!

Toki Pona Lesson 2.3 - Words Sentences
toki!
Today, I'll be teaching you a new word in Toki Pona.
Today's word is: jan - (YAN)
jan means person or being
Here is jan in a sentence:
jan li ijo
This means:
A person is a thing
The literal translation:
Person (placeholder that can be roughly equated to 'is') thing
You may notice that there is no word for 'a'! In Toki Pona, there are a very limited number of words. We don't want to waste any of them on words such as 'a' or 'the' when they can be assumed to be there. The same goes for singular and plural words; there are none! All words can be used as a singular or as a plural. jan can mean a person or people. Context is used to work out which is being used, but there are some words that we will discuss in another lesson that can be used to specify.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson. If there are any ways I could improve, please let me know, and don’t hesitate to ask any questions!

Toki Pona Lesson 2.2 - Words and Sentences
toki!
Today, I'll be teaching you another new word in Toki Pona.
Today's word is: kili - (KEE-lee)
kili is a very broad word! It can mean any fruit or any vegetable! To specify a fruit or vegetable, you can add more words, as I will show you below.
Here is kili in a sentence:
kili telo li ijo
This means:
A watermelon is something
The literal translation:
fruit water (placeholder word which can be roughly compared to 'is') something.
We say 'fruit water' instead of 'water fruit' in Toki Pona because the most important word goes first. In this case, the most important thing about the object is that it is a fruit. If we said 'water fruit', because the liquid is the first thing, the word becomes 'juice'.
I hope you enjoyed this lesson. If there are any ways I could improve, please let me know, and don’t hesitate to ask any questions!

Toki Pona Lesson 2.1 - Words and Sentences
toki!
Today, I'll be teaching you a new word in Toki Pona.
Today's word is: ijo - (EE-yo)
ijo means something, thing, or being. It's a great first word to know, as it can be slipped into any sentence while you are first learning grammar rules. That way, you can focus on the grammar, and not worry about what words you are using and if they make sense!
Here is ijo in a sentence:
mi ijo
This means:
I am something
The literal translation:
I something
I hope you enjoyed this lesson. If there are any ways I could improve, please let me know, and don’t hesitate to ask any questions!

Lesson 1 - Letters
toki!
This is a very short lesson today! I’ll be telling you which letters are included in Toki Pona and how we pronounce them.
The letters are: A, E, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, S, T, U, W
Let’s break them into vowels and consonants!
Our vowels are: A, E, I, O, U
A is pronounced with an AH sound, like at the end of the word BRA. E is pronounced with an EH sound, like in BED. I is pronounced with an EE sound, like you hear in DEEP. O uses an OH sound, like in GO. Finally, U sounds the same as OO, just like in FOOD.
The consonants are: J, K, L, M, N, P, S, T, W
All consonants are pronounced just like they are in English, except for J. A J makes a Y sound! So the word for person, jan, is pronounced YAN, like a yam, not JAN, like some jam.
It is also important to know that, in Toki Pona, all words are written in lowercase. Other than names, of course! That is why you see people write things like this - toki! mi jan Kelenak! - rather than like this - Toki! Mi jan Kelenak - or even - Toki! Mi jan kelenak!
I hope you enjoyed this lesson. If there are any ways I could improve, please let me know, and don’t hesitate to ask any questions!
mi tawa!

toki! mi jan Kelenak (Hello! I’m Dealanach)
I’m going to be going through the Toki Pona book lesson by lesson and breaking it down over the course of a week per lesson. Each day will include a new word and it’s pronunciation. When I’ve used all of the words, the rest of the days will be spent translating sentences using those words. I’ll show you a sentence with it’s translation, then you guys can try two sentences yourselves; one Toki Pona sentence to English (or any other language, but I only speak English and Toki Pona lili so I won’t be able to give corrections), and the other English to Toki Pona!
This will be starting from tomorrow!
mi tawa! (Goodbye!)

Oh no
I accidentally forgot that Tumblr existed...
So here’s an update on life right now:
Learning SSE has slowed down for me. I integrate some words into my day to day because I work with disabled kids but I don’t do much else.
I stopped learning Gaidhlig (for now). Language learning is very difficult for me and I’ve decided to stop working at Gaidhlig. I’m not going to change my handle because I am still Celtic, I just won’t be speaking the tongue for a good while.
I have actually started learning a different language. It is called Toki Pona and has 131 words. As an ADHDer, this language is perfect as there isn’t much to remember. It reignited my love for language (as a whole, not just learning them) and I’m having fun posting so far!

Hi! I’ll be going by Orpheus or Dealanach on this acount and I’m currently learning Gàidhlig and BSL (it’s closer to SSE at the moment, but I’m planning on moving to BSL once I have enough signs under my belt).
I’m currently a complete beginner at Gàidhlig and am using Duolingo (for now). I’m learning this to get closer to my Scottish roots
I have some experience with SSE and know a handful of basic signs. I have less experience with the grammar of BSL. I’m learning this as I have recently become hard of hearing
If you have any questions for me, go ahead!
