What did you do to save the planet Grandad?
The concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere just passed 400ppm a couple of weeks ago.
What haunts me every day, and no doubt will for the rest of my days, is what I will reply to my grandchildren (I'm 34 with no kids at the time of writing) when they ask me what I did during the time when climate change could have been brought under some sort of control, when the necessary changes could have been put in place to create a low-carbon, resilient and thriving culture that nurtured healthy human cultures.
Was I as effective as I could have been?  Did I do everything I could have?
Having reflected on this for some time, I've realised that despite reducing, reusing and recycling everything I can in my private life, taking advantage of water butts, solar heating, clean energy, Non Volatile Organic paints, and any other way I can creatively reduce my impact on the environment, I am most proud of my work life.
ICT is responsible for a humongous amount of the world's global CO2e, the majority in building computers, tablets, laptops, and the rest powering them and the vast data centers we use to surf the web.  Pretty simplistic assessment there but you get the point.  IT accounts for around 3% of emissions now.
However... we cannot function as a species without IT anymore.  Smartphone here, tablet there, Oyster card here, iPod in there, Facebook etc  IT has the ability to reduce our impact on the environment.
I'm thankful I have a job in this economic climate. I work for @verypc a UK based manufacturer of computer hardware. The core of the business is how to build sustainable computers that have as little impact as possible on the environment in manufacture, use and disposal. Every PC, Laptop and Server I sell is reducing MY impact on the environment.  Yes mine, not just the people who buy our kit.
That's what I did to save the planet, and that's how I'll make my grand kids proud, 1 PC at a time.

Green IT Hardware Product of the Year
Good news!
The VeryPC BroadLeaf One Ultra Small Form Factor Desktop PC has been nominated in the Hardware Product of the Year category at the Green IT Awards, Yes!  With only 353kg CO2e over a 5 year lifecycle, which is all offset free of charge plus 25% for good measure, I really don't think there is a more sustainable, commercially available IT hardware product on the block.

Visit VeryPCs website (which is a pretty cool landing page at the moment..) to find a hidden Easter Egg to win some Haribo, and follow the in your face link to vote for VeryPC too.
Cheers, Grumpy

Video showing real time energy use of 4 x standalone PCs v 1 VeryPC BroadLeaf Green PC using SoftXpand desktop virtualisation. Cool; massive reduction in energy use, embedded carbon and ultra recyclable at end of life, without sacrificing performance!

Well you know I love anything in IT that reduces, reuses and / or recycles.  I've seen cardboard computers before, but this design has caught my attention.
It's a Sustainable Cardboard Computer Handmade in Texas from Brenden Macaluso's company Recompute PC and is a great example of a Low Impact Product (LIP).
Warms my Grumpy Heart.

The world's most eco friendly Tablet PC revealed....
Tumblr media
So... iameco have had this little beauty, called the v3, accredited to the Eco Flower Label of the European Union.  The Energy Saving Trust Recommended BroadLeaf from VeryPC must be quaking in its boots.  According to the designers "it achieves previously unattainable standards of energy efficiency, re-usability and recyclability on the market".
In December Asus announced that it had become the first manufacturer to meet the requirements of the PAS 2060:2010 Standard for Carbon Neutrality with the U53SD Bamboo Notebook, making it the first ever notebook to achieve net zero carbon emissions during its product lifecycle.  They kind of gave themselves the plaudits there, but the v3 looks like a genuine world first in Green IT to me.  If they can do it, why can't Apple, Samsung, HP et al?
Impressive stuff.  The BroadLeaf has been rightly touted since 2009 as the world's first carbon neutral PC with measurable figures available (see further down in my blog for the infographic) showing the entire carbon emissions in production, use and disposal; so it Looks like a head to head comparison is in order, no... It'll be interesting to see the results. Grumpy Green not so grumpy now!
However, one grump I do have is in the labeling process. EST is genuine, PAS is voluntary, and the EU Eco Flower is paid for.  I still believe we need 1 label that does the certifying with no trade links that is government sponsored.

Is this a Green Server?
So, you'll notice the little plant in the bottom left hand corner sprouting out.  Classic Greenwash with poor imagery; although Super Micro who manufacture the actual servers are doing a great job in Green IT. Sentral IT you are guilty of making Grumpy Green *grump* with your use of the little green plant..

Another laughable Green IT image
Avid followers will know that one thing that gives me the right grump is a company's use of imagery to display Green IT.
Here IBM have brought out my grumpy side with this image of a plant erupting out of a hard disk, Copyright: EggHeadPhoto
Honestly. Nice reuse of redundant ICT weee though...
The article's pretty good though as a brief read on embedding sustainability into strategy in Green IT.

Infograph: Why Jamaicans are so darn fast
When was the last time a country with a population half the size of Yorkshire took Gold, Silver and Bronze in an Olympics event, and probably would have done so in the 100 meters too if Powell hadn't pulled a muscle..?

Facebook reveals its Carbon Footprint, and it's huge..
Great use of renewables and a barely believable data centre PUE are the highlights.  If they were UK based they'd be paying some serious carbon credits off..
