Hange clinged to him that night.

No.

It wasn't long enough to be one, no matter how much the two wanted it to be. They had no time for something so trivial when all of humanity was in danger.

The flame cracked and cackled, almost mocking them.

"Running away...would've been so nice, no?" they, almost emotionlessly, say.

"Of course, for a while. Guilt would eat us alive. If we stayed here and did nothing, you would hate yourself."

He was right. Levi was always right when it came to understanding them.

They feel their heart getting faster, then their nose sting, then their mouth curl—

Then his left hand grab their wrist. They lift their arm, and hold it. Stupid. This was stupid. They had no time for whatever this is. Love, or whatever the hell you call it. They have a duty. As soldiers fighting for freedom. For humanity. But soldiers... are people too. They have their weaknesses, vulnerabilities. When these don't get dealt with, how would they continue to protect?

So Levi invites them to lay on the space next to him. So they could hold each other. He removed their glasses and eyepatch as their eyes started to flutter shut. This fleeting moment might be their final one together. He doesn't want to regret it, and so he presses a soft kiss to their forehead.
