If I were to introduce someone to this podcast and that someone has only ever listened to the Magnus archives, what could I say to convince them to listen in?
First of all, THANK YOU for taking the time to introduce us to new listeners!
Secondly, that depends! What are they most interested in?
In general you can tell them it has a similar vibe and feel to Magnus (with the phone calls and tape recordings) but just a tad spookier, and a tad gayer, and with a more diverse main cast of international + Toronto based characters.
Where Magnus had the acerbic ace uptight Archivist who's secretly fucked up with childhood trauma, Hi Nay has the sweetheart 5ft tall fat pansexual Filipina who's secretly fucked up with childhood trauma.
Where Magnus had the inherent tragicomedy of workplace dynamics turning into complicated interpersonal relationships, Hi Nay has the inherent tragicomedy of a Scooby Gang friend group who love each other so deeply that the fact that they all might not make it out alive may destroy them forever.
And where Magnus deals with the cosmic horror of Entities and Fear, Hi Nay deals with how the supernatural is much more bearable and easy to solve than the real life horror of fascism, which is actually what our most powerful magic-using characters had to deal with (that gave them the aforementioned fucked up childhood trauma), and capitalism (our villains are weird rich people).
I think on surface level, our sound is so similar to Magnus Archives (and even more so Magnus Protocol) that people can scratch their itch with Hi Nay once they finish up all available Magnus episodes, but hopefully they'll find the unique story as they go along (and have patience for how small and busy our team is, since we can only release 1 episode every 2 weeks).
(also if you like Filipino folklore we sometimes dive into that in our Remind Me To Tell You Later episodes)
We have 51 story episodes available to listen to wherever you listen to podcasts!
Never a bad day to repost this animation I did for our fundraiser! Also never a bad day to remind people to listen to Hi Nay ;)

We're on Acast, all other podcast platforms, AND Youtube!
We're still very much an indie production (because ad revenue is no longer a viable source of funds for most online creators unless you get hundreds of thousands / millions of listens per episode and we're too openly political for most sponsors) so if you'd like to support us and help us make Hi Nay's production sustainable, check out our P4treon!
You can get lots of bonus stuff over there, and early access to episodes 3 days ahead of posting! It's a great time. It's also our primary source of funds for our production and our fantastic cast.
And if you can't subscribe but still want to contribute, you can always throw us a few dollars over on Ko-Fi! We appreciate all the help.
“Hi Nay ( @hinaypod ) is a truly unique and delightful horror podcast that I am so incredibly grateful for. The storytelling, acting, and sound design are all wonderful and make for an electrifying listen. I love these characters and can't wait for what I'm sure will be a heartwrenching, satisfying conclusion.”
Hi Nay, a horror audio drama that follows Mari, a Filipina immigrant fighting supernatural threats in Toronto, using lived experience from growing up with a babaylan (shaman) mother.
"Hi Nay" is how she greets her mom (Nanay) over the phone.
Season 1 follows Mari's mission to stop the Elders, a group of early 1900s rich immortal occultists, from terrorizing innocent people with cursed objects called Foci — especially their mysterious leader, The Benefactor, who is so powerful that nobody remembers his face or name.
She's joined by two supernatural detectives Donner and Murphy, her 6'2 strong-armed lesbian neighbor Laura, and Ashvin, a celebrity conman guru with real magic powers.
Relationships are tested as the supernatural threats grow ever more dangerous - both external, and internal.
If you like queer BIPOC horror, romance, strong core relationships helping a found family face down relentless despair, randomly scattered Filipino-isms, by a Filipina creator with a small indie team - packaged in a Magnus Archives-inspired analog horror sound:
Give Hi Nay a listen! We're on Acast, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Youtube, and wherever you listen to podcasts!
Someone said Hi Nay had "shippable women" on Twitter because some characters canonically Love each other and other characters canonically Hate each other and that's the legacy I've always hoped for
