the thing abt house is that he will say virtually anything regardless of how much he believes it. like a lot of the rude and offensive shit he does isn't out of a genuine lack of care for others as much as his way of dealing with his whole fucked up life. so much of his behavior makes sense when you read him as an autistic person with trauma who has evolved to protect himself in very specific and fucked up ways! i mean they make it explicit that his father's abusive behavior is what led to him being chronically late and compulsively rejecting authority. it's also essentially canon that he thinks the only thing he is good for is his intelligence & his diagnostic abilities. he doesn't think people would care about him if he wasn't House™, if he was just some bitter fucked up guy who is unable to act normal and make normal relationships.

he cares so much about his patients lives! he care about his fellows and his friends and even complete strangers! like the reason his moral compass is "confusing" is part "cis white guy living/written in the 2000s" syndrome but also comes from the difference between how he communicates and what he feels. he'll call someone the r slur without hesitating for the hell of it but he is also extremely critical of how society treats anyone abnormal.

he's just on the edge of functioning. just in the right space to be unable to fit in with "real human beings" while also getting no sympathy from people who see him as just an unrepentant asshole. even people who KNOW HIM and should have figured this out by now will act like this! it's insane!!!

that's why house is such an interesting character to me because I think he's honestly a great example of how people treat mentally ill, neurodivergent, & disabled people who cope Wrong. who aren't easy to pity, who can't/won't mold themselves to society's expectations, who are fucked up and mean and ugly! it's easy to feel empathy for a young girl who's been abused or a polite autistic boy but it's much harder to feel the same way for a middle aged man with a drug addiction who communicates through insults and pranks. and that's why you have scenes of house actually being the best doctor for certain patients to talk to. like the one girl who accidentally killed her little brother– house is the one who convinces her to contact her parents because he is unafraid to deal with something that fucked up and painful.

i saw a post the other day about how house ruins everyone that interacts with him and i went into full on protection mode. so lets talk about this.

yes, house is an asshole! thats a major part of his character. but he's not JUST an asshole, and he isn't a bad person. house cares so so much about his friends and his patients and the life he lives. he cares so much about the people around him, even though it's hard for him to show it! i've talked abt my house abuse thoughts here before but he grew up constantly moving around and never being able to make friends, and he also grew up being abused. it is not at all surprising that he is afraid of connection, of intimacy.

the thing is though - house shows again and again how much he cares. he cares so much about the people around him. he offers to kill thirteen when she can't handle it anymore. he's in love with wilson, even if you only want to see it platonically. he cares about patients. he cares so fucking much, and yet people, in the show ajd in the fandom, constantly try to describe him as someone who doesn't care at all. he doesn't just hurt people for fun.

the reality of the situation is that house has trauma and doesnt have an easy time showing it, and throughout the fandom and the show he is treated as some sort of monster. he deserves better across the board
