TO BE QUITE HONEST, YOU DIDN’T UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS SO GREAT ABOUT CHRISTMAS.
It wasn’t like you had any bad memories linked to the holiday, but you didn’t even have any emotional or religious connection to the day. All you could get excited over were the presents and holiday deals. Some (Han Jisung) might call you heartless for having such little care for a special day, but you liked to think you were simply an investor.
Recently, however, a little birdie by the name of Bang Chan let you in on a secret about mistletoe. This was actually no secret, and you had to explain to your friend that everyone knew the concept of kissing someone underneath the sprig of leaves. Still, you were intrigued once Chan mentioned that he was planning on hanging some up at his Christmas party.
Sure, Christmas didn’t exactly help curb your minor shopping addiction, but you were very interested in finding out who your best friend, Hwang Hyunjin, had a crush on.
He had been pining over some unknown girl for years and had only mentioned it recently. Hyunjin seemed to regret keying you in, however, because it became your mission to find out who he was crushing on.
You two had been friends ever since you became gym partners on the first day of high school. Like that, you both were joined at the hip—inseparable.
Recently, though, you had come to realize that you were in love with your best friend.
This wasn’t some absurd realization. You were closer with Hyunjin than you were with your other guy friends, and it was inevitable that you would catch feelings for the man you had been close with for years. You figured that these feelings weren’t anything new; there was a good chance you had been suppressing them for years now.
What drove you to this epiphany was the very finding that Hyunjin had a crush, and your inseparable friendship dared to become separable. Although you were ashamed to admit it, you were jealous that someone out there was more special to Hyunjin than you were to him. Yet, you masked these feelings by acting overly-excited for his potential love life.
“C’mon, why won’t you tell me who you like?” you pressed Hyunjin before your last class of the day. “We’ve been friends for four years!”
“It’s not that big of a deal, okay?” Hyunjin let out a short sigh, textbook tucked under his arm. “Nothing’s gonna happen, anyway.”
Hyunjin’s jaw stiffened. He wanted to just yell out that you were the one he liked, that all this interrogation you were doing was going to end in disappointment. Part of him wondered if he was an idiot for falling in love with his best friend, and the other part knew he was an idiot for liking you so much.
You, on the other hand, frowned, but you decided not to push Hyunjin too much. Instead, you decided to see how things turned out at Chan’s Christmas party. While you weren’t able to find out who Hyunjin liked, he did tell you that his crush was going to the party.
You prepared yourself for two outcomes: disappointment or heartbreak.
“Y/N, you look cute,” Chan complimented when you arrived at his front door. “Is that a new dress?”
Chan’s house was bigger than you had expected. Sure, his front lawn was littered with solo dixie cups and streamers, but you had to appreciate how large the interior of his house was. When you looked past the neon lights and drinks everywhere, it was a refined space.
Hyunjin, who was by your side, stiffened up. After you begged him, he gave in and drove you to the party. Hyunjin didn’t exactly trust himself to drive anyone really, so he was notorious for flaking on people who asked him for rides.
(He wasn’t a terrible driver, but your grandmother could probably drive past him easily.)
“Hey, Chan.” Hyunjin diverted his friend’s attention with a raise of his brows. “Where’s Jisung? I have to yell at him about his parking job.”
You laughed, shoving Hyunjin’s shoulder. “Jisung just got his license; give him a break.” You turned to Chan with a smile. “By the way, thank you very much. I bought the dress before the party.” You shot Hyunjin a pointed look before you continued, “I’m glad someone noticed.”
Hyunjin swallowed thickly in response. Silence wasn’t usually his thing; your best friend was normally a vibrant presence in the room. Today, however, he seemed more mellow and reserved, like something was eating at him.
“Are you okay?” you asked when Chan walked away. You grabbed your friend by the shoulders and shook him. “Get yourself together, Hwang Hyunjin.”
He stifled a small laugh and looked down at you, amused. “I’m great—I’m fine!” he exclaimed. After taking a look around Chan’s living room, taking in the blasting music and mosh pits of people grouping together, he mentioned, “I heard there’s mistletoe around here.”
Your breath was caught in your throat. That was right. Tonight you wanted to see who Hyunjin was crushing on for this long, and if things went well for him, he would probably be making out with said person underneath the sprig. Your heart squeezed a little at the thought, but you put on a smile for him.
“There should be,” you said, “but this Christmas party doesn’t seem very wholesome or romantic.”
Hyunjin shrugged, and, for a moment, it felt like everything around you was completely still. Your best friend’s eyes bore into yours with utmost curiosity, and you felt like you were completely transparent in front of him. You wondered if it was normal for your heart to race this fast.
“I dunno,” he mumbled. “I guess I just have to get away from all the noise.”
You floundered for a moment, trying to find the right words, but nothing was coming to mind. Instead, your head whipped around to look for Chan. You were absolutely pathetic; you needed rescuing from your own best friend.
“Chan!” you called, ignoring Hyunjin’s incoherent grumble. The host was standing by the pool table, looking over Jisung’s shoulder to watch over his turn. “Where’d you hang up the mistletoe?”
Chan turned to you and rubbed the back of his neck. “I think it’s hung up on the back door, but I’m not sure if Felix got to hang up the mistletoe in time.”
You deflated a little, but thanked him. When you walked back to Hyunjin, you tugged at his sleeve. He looked a little alarmed for a moment, but he went along with your antics, letting you drag him to the kitchen where the back door was.
This was it. You were going to finally find out who Hyunjin’s crush was.
“Is your crush here yet?” you asked him.
He just stared at you. “Yeah.”
You looked for the mistletoe once you were at the door, but there wasn’t anything hanging over the door. You frowned and opened it, trying to see if Felix hung it outside or something. That was when you noticed the sprig of mistletoe that was strewn a couple of feet away from the door.
You and Hyunjin turned to each other, wordless for a few sounds before bursting into laughter. You had no idea why you found the situation so funny, but part of you was so worked up over finding Hyunjin’s crush that you didn’t expect everything about the situation to be the complete opposite of romantic. The party was not the wholesome holiday party you thought it would be, everyone was getting drunk, and the decorations were falling apart.
“This is terrible,” you said, wiping a stray tear from your eye. “There’s no way you can confess to her like this.”
Hyunjin was silent, watching you come down from your fit of laughter with a half-smile on his face. The way he looked at you with those warm eyes made you feel so giddy, but you had to keep reminding yourself that his smile wasn’t for you.
Then, Hyunjin’s eyes refocused and he pointed out, “It’s snowing.”
“Oh.”
You turned around to see the white flakes falling from the sky. You took a step outside, letting the cool bite of winter embrace you. It was a refreshing change from how hot it was in Chan’s house, and you put your hand out to catch snowflakes on your fingertips.
You turned around with a wide grin on your face. “Come on, Hyunjin!” you exclaimed. “It’s the first snow of December!”
You both had played in the snow in years past. It had been something like a tradition where you would call your best friend in the middle of the night once the snow started falling, and he would sneak out just to play in the snow with you. Even now, Hyunjin was grinning as he looked up at the sky, trying to see if a snowflake would fall onto his face.
“Oh, you got one on your cheek,” he observed, eyes searching yours. You stared up at him, afraid to blink because you didn’t want to brush it off. “I’ll get it for you.”
All resolve to keep the snowflake on your cheek melted away. Hyunjin took a step closer to you, cornering you against the tree you were under. You fought down your shyness as Hyunjin’s hand cupped your cheek, brushing away the snowflake with his thumb. His fingers were warm against your skin, and your cheeks heated up when you realized that it wasn’t just his touch lingering, but his hand was still on your cheek.
“Hey, Y/N,” Hyunjin mumbled.
With all the courage you could muster up, you looked your best friend in the eye. “Yeah?”
A small smile broke across his face, and he cupped your other cheek with his free hand. “Merry Christmas.”
Before you could take another breath, Hyunjin’s soft lips pressed against yours, passion scalding enough to melt away the snow. Hyunjin smiled into the kiss when you let out a soft sound of confusion. You were taken aback, frozen for a few moments before you melted and kissed him back, arms wrapping around your best friend’s neck.
When he pulled away, he smiled lovingly at you, and it made you feel like the only girl in the world. It set you on fire.
It all made sense now; Hyunjin’s reluctance to tell you who he liked, his hesitation on coming to the party, and his nervousness earlier was all because he liked you. You felt like an idiot for not picking up on it earlier, but you were too over-the-moon right now at the fact that he felt the same way you did.
“Y/N, look up,” he murmured.
Disoriented, you looked up, and then a bright smile broke across your face.
Over your heads was a blossoming sprig of mistletoe.
