levi would have considered cooking a love language, he remembered being in the kitchen with his mom or his lola when he could barely even see over the counter, he still made just as much of a mess now compared to when he was a kid helping out around the kitchen “look, im just saying we should just give the pottery scene from ghost a culinary twist” he cheekily shot towards Harrison. He was working on finely chopping up some garlic when he heard Harrison’s inquiry “hmmm” he hummed gently to himself, glancing back over his shoulder “it should work, maybe just use half the amount of what should have been cumin” chicken adobo was very much a comfort food for the man, it was a recipe he knew like the back of his hand. he did take the time to write it down for Harrison’s perusal before they had started. The chicken had been left to marinate in the fridge over night, it was one less job that the two would have had to do today and he knew it was a job that would have been left to him anyway, he really just wanted to enjoy hanging out with harrison.
he found comfort within the four walls of their apartment, a space for the three of them to come home and know that there was someone at home looking out for the other in their own way. the things that they did for one another they might have considered it not to be a big deal, but they had never went amiss when it came to levi, the food that luvena left for him from time to time was always met by a smile on his face when he saw his name scrawled against some tupperware. And then Harrison, they always kept him company in some way or another whilst he cooked. He would lend him a hand when it was needed but other than that they could usually be found dancing around the kitchen while he worked. Actions did speak louder than words after all, their apartment was filled with love, although it may have been quiet you could always see it in their actions towards each other. He was just finishing up with chopping the garlic when he heard the keys turning in the door. He took a moment to wipe his hands against his towel, hip leaning against the counter. It seemed as though each of them had a different idea of who was escaping the apartment first, both him and Harrison seemed to have gestured to themselves simultaneously
“liar” he says under his breath, disguised under a cough for good measure. he playfully narrowed his eyes at luvena as she picked at a plate of various vegetables that he was going to serve with dinner “chicken adobo” he answers luvena in-between the chaos of their conversation. he crosses his arms over his chest, his attention drawn back to Harrison as he brings up his reasoning for not wanting to be left in a burning apartment “let me just hop on your back and you can still carry sushi out” he raises a hand to cover the side of his mouth, his voice was hushed as if not wanting harrison to hear him “they can fend for themselves.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
☁️ ⠀  ⠀ ⠀  ⠀ ───────────  as usual, the smile on her face came easy whenever she was in the presence of levi and harrison. home took on new meaning for someone who went years of her life without one. after the first year of couch surfing and spending her income to stay in shotty motel rooms or hostels, the idea of having a place to call home went beyond walking through a threshold every evening. home had once been meals made from scratch after a three hour dance class with her mother and father; it was thursday nights sat around the television and laughing over one another they watched the latest episode of one of her corny pre-teen dramas. but home had also been her mother’s key in the lock at four am followed by whispered arguments over her whereabouts; it was coming into the living room to her father checking her credit card statements, and keeping an eye on the window.
her definition of the word was skewed early on, but shattered completely when her father removed her ability to ever come back to it. being kicked out of the place she’d called home before her most formative years had left her with the belief that there wasn’t such a thing to be found. it wasn’t until she moved in with the two of them that she began to realize that home didn’t necessarily have to be a place. she looked forward to unlocking the door to find them fighting over the blanket left on the couch. it lit a fire under a long since frozen heart to see sushi resting comfortably on levi’s lap while harrison made the dangerous effort to clip his claws. when asher came out she found that his apartment felt just as much like home too, even more so than her own place. walking through the door of his home for the first time had felt like she’d been welcomed back after years apart. that four letter word was no longer something she felt she had to attach to a place. she could attach it to people.
once that appreciation for the two in the kitchen had settled in her heart, it never left. it was always with here. especially in moments like these where she watched them make use of their too-small-kitchen. “ chicken adobo ? that’s so crazy, i love it. never had it, but it sounds like it would be right up my alley y’know ? fits my vibe. ” luvena teased as if she didn’t devour anything levi put in front of her. every dish he made was an instant favorite because he’d cared enough to consider her in the first place. “ oh y’know that’s actually a really good idea. you’re going to be on your own on the balancing thing though so if you fall off you’re fucked. ” she spoke, typing up the poltergeist face melting scene into her phone before pulling up the image. she held it out for levi to took on with her and squinted for dramatic effect. “ these spot the difference games are getting harder and harder, snydog. what am i looking for ? ”

☁️ ⠀  ⠀ ⠀  ⠀ ───────────  there wasn’t a single person in the kitchen that should have been there. had luvena been home when levi and harrison had decided to make dinner for themselves she still wouldn’t have tried to stop them, but it would have been fun to see the wreck happen from the beginning. instead, she’d come home to a chaotic culinary episode in place and tried to use the process of elimination to narrow down what dish they could be cooking based on the mess accumulating on the counters. “ who let harrison watch the great british baker again ? ” she asked as she’d slid her way into the kitchen. her words had been nothing more than a taunt as she’d often sat on the counter while either of went from cabinet to pantry to put together a meal for the three of them. truthfully, luvena treated well balanced meals as a suggestion. for years a lot of her nutrition had come from the two of them being kind enough to share with her.
luvena did try to pay it forward whenever levi was running too rampant to slow down, or harrison had trouble leaving his bed let alone his room; however, it usually came in the form of take out orders or left overs thieving from raleigh’s home. it was still too difficult for luvena to vocally extend her thank yous, but she didn’t have any problem leaving a tupperware container with their names on it in the fridge or by their bedside table. she hoped that had been enough for them too. “ what’s on the menu tonight ? just as always, if you guys start a fire sushi and i get to have access to the fire escape first since we’re the cutest. it’s the terms and conditions you signed to, can’t back out now. ” she continued to tease, taking a piece of whatever resting on the plate and popped it into her mouth.

( ─── :: jackson had a habit towards isolation. years of coming and going from people’s lives had lead him to the simple belief that he was fine by himself, and the stubbornness to ensure it was true. when he got time off from work, he had a habit of stowing himself away in his apartment, steadily making an attempt to disappear from people’s lives. he really thought in new york he’d be able to fade into the background ; he might be able to stay here, because in a city so big, it would be easy to avoid making connections, right ? wrong. he had misjudged the persistence in some of the people who he came into contact with ── luvena included. he frequently complained to asher about how frustrating it was that the man had ever lead the two to be introduced, but in all honesty, if luvena had disappeared ── well, jackson would miss her. he just would never say that.
“ because i bet they’re not real. “ he replied childishly, shifting in his seat so he could rest his feet on the floor. “ i’ve never heard of a sunfish before. “ despite his protests, jackson was fumbling with his phone, leaning his face against his palm. luvena had his book, and so why not navigate to the wikipedia article on sunfish? pressing his tongue against the back of his teeth, he didn’t even bother to look up as she kept rambling. “ mhm. “ he hummed, though at the mention of the cat his gaze did flicker to her again. “ that sounds worse than just having them sitting out and about ── you guys just have a house full of taxidermied animals with no eyes ?! and you’re gonna make fun of me ? “ he knew, of course, that wasn’t what lu meant ── but that wasn’t going to stop him from making the smart remark. his eyes returned to his phone as she turned her attention to drawing in his book ── something that he had quickly given in too. “ i’m sure they’ll want to put it in the louvre. “ he deadpanned.

☁️ ⠀  ⠀ ⠀  ⠀ ───────────  permeantance was a concept luvena believed she was better off without. she’d passed through so many doors, and made herself a memory in the lives of many. she saw what kind of damage sticking around could do, and unconditional love always came with a fine print. luvena could see herself running in a lot of the same ways jackson had; shifting from city to state at any sign of inconvenience or discomfort. doing her best to put distance between herself and the things that hurt, and just keep running until her legs were tired and her lungs were weak. but there was one consistent that kept her rooted in new york, and that was asher. no matter how many awkward run ins, or classmates homes she had to couch surf on, she knew she could never leave the state. she hardly drifted too far from the city. her visits while he was locked away were already few and far between, she couldn’t risk her letters getting lost in transit too.
it was because of asher being her one constant, that she was introduced to quite a few more. had you asked a freshly dropped out luvena if she could see herself sharing her space with two others, and constantly taking up the space in the apartment’s of others the answer would have been a hard no. jackson had just become another one of those constants. “ you’ve also apparently never heard of a homegoods before either, or an ikea. doesn’t mean they don’t exist. ” she quick to reply; her eyes making a sure of looking around his apartment as if to emphasis her point. “ at least sushi will always have something to play with, no wonder your cat is such a menace all you do is lay forgotten cords on the ground, and toss paper balls at her head. i wouldn’t wanna stay in this apartment either. ” luvena did her best to feign disinterest but a smile at her own dumb drawing was pulling at her lips. “ you know i don’t know what the hell that is, but i’d be disappointed if they didn’t. you look better already. ”

─── ﹙ 🧜·♀️ :: DEEP SEA BAMBI :: she looked up at her friend, the after affects of a smile still lingering on her features as luvena quizzed her on her success thus far. she fidgeted with her gel pen a bit, tapping it on the notebook a few times before giving a shrug to the concerned woman that sat across from her. ‘ my true love ? ‘ she signed before quickly doodling the question in cursive on the notebook. a hand quickly found itself raised and hiding her widening smile. without turning the notebook back around, she wrote upside down, exchanging more questions to her friend without answering any herself. ‘ have you found your true love ? ‘ was carefully written in purple gel to the one that felt the need to show up as a bodyguard more than a willing participant. at the realization that luvena was serious about taking someone outside, bambi shook her hands and head simultaneously and made sure to throw two thumbs up.
she took a moment to dig into her purse again to retrieve a pad of seashell shaped post-it notes. it was the indication that she was going to rapid fire her messages to luvena who definitely made the mistake of asking her what was on her mind. she had so much to say. quickly, she scribed her musings on the pad and ripped off one after another to stick on the table in front of luvena.
‘ is it mean to say that men are weird ? ‘ the first post-it read with several question marks. ‘ of course i know the notebook and the pens is a weird ice breaker, but people have been nice about it, for the most part. ‘ she nodded as she placed that note, but puffed out her cheeks as she wrote the next. ‘ i just wasn’t expecting them to be so … i don’t now, just very strange ? ‘ hesitation overcame her as she slowly placed that note in front of luvena. ‘ it’s honestly a little odd. i thought i would put most people off, but i learned they love to talk about themselves. and love to teach ? ‘ she sucked her lips in trying her hardest not to smile as she put down her pad and flipped through her notebook to a page where she had an exchange with a rather brazen truck driver. she slid it back for luvena to skim and picked her pad back up. ‘ he taught me what a motorboat was. ‘ it was becoming harder not to laugh at her friend’s expressions. ‘ he first said motorboat and i got excited and said, oh, i love boats ! but then he laughed. ‘ her shoulders bounced with her silent laughter as she placed the final post-it in front of luvena. ‘ turns out, it’s not an actual boat. he wrote a description and then kept making the little raspberries with his lips until time was up. so, yeah ! it’s been interesting ! ‘ bambi knew that luvena felt protective over her, but tried to convince her that she wasn’t as naive as she looked. unfortunately, moments like this proved otherwise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
☁️ ⠀  ⠀ ⠀  ⠀ ───────────  there’d been too much talk about love in the air for luvena’s taste. one by one she was watching her friends get bit by the same invisible parasite and fall victim to its effects almost immediately. even jackson had seemed to be keeping his fair share of secrets in the department. it wasn’t her business ( most things hardly ever were ), so she tried to stay out of it but her curiosity always got the better of her. it’s what led her to pressing her friends with the hard questions, or breaking into their apartment, or following them to a speed dating event in which she had no interest in attending. a part of her wondering what it was about the idea of love, or being loved that was so enticing they couldn’t resist it while all she seemed to do was run away from it. so when bambi turns the question on her, ‘ have you found your true love ? ’ she expects to laugh. but she doesn’t.
instead, luvena hesitates. her face stuck on the notebook in front of her as the features of an all too familiar face begin sketching itself in her mind. late night walks home, a skip in her step just to reach for his hand, and the mandatory phone call on the way back so she’d know he got home safely; those memories released a swarm of butterflies in her stomach. we’re just friends, she’d always insisted. she wanted to mean it. but then there was living room forts she’d force him into, laughter exchanged over games she never let him win, and falling asleep with her head on his shoulder but waking up to his hand in hers. and she almost smiles; her lips twitch at the thought.
the first memo pad being slammed on the table shocks her out of her trance, and she has to blink away the outline of his face from her mind. bambi’s optimism would be nauseating if she hadn’t been so use to it by now. at the start of their makeshift friendship ( though you’d never catch luvena calling it that ), the smiles and go-getter-attitude the other had displayed had been anything but endearing to her. after awhile it sort of dulled from an incessant buzzing to a quiet hum; luvena was still aware that it was there, but she was able to shrug it off a lot easier. though there were times ( like now ) where that naive nature was worn on her chest like a badge of honor. this was one of those times. “ he taught you what ? ” she inquired, reading over the notes one more time before laying them on the table and pushing them to the side as if to get them as far away from them as possible. “ it’s never mean to state facts, and the fact is that man was a fucking weirdo. who opens with that ? where did he think that was going to get him ? also, how did you not know that ? you must not have went to a public school huh ? maybe we should make you one of those online dating accounts first so i can vet the weirdos before you meet them. ”

It would have been completely justified for Jackson to come home now and to be pissed at the two women who didn’t know how to mind their own business. She could picture the look of utter defeat that might have graced the mans face if he were to discover the two in his apartment going through his things. “two plates, you know what that means lulu?” there wasn’t really any reason for Bowie to be rooting around in the man’s kitchen, it wasn’t like she didn’t do it anyway when she was hanging out over here “for him and his mystery woman, some might say it’s getting pretty serious” she wiggled her eyebrows, holding the two plates up so Luvena could see. She moved back towards Luvena, lowering herself to the ground so she could help her with searching through the books “there has to be something around here, he is more sentimental than he lets on, he still carries around a picture of us from when we were kids”
it really might have been one of the few photos that existed of Bowie as a child, there was something kind of nice about it being kept in someone’s wallet, a photo that she was in that would be kept with someone at all times. Jackson might not have had much in his apartment, but books around here were not in short supply, she was sure that anyone who knew Jackson knew just how important they were to him. Some people were very careful with their books and their upkeep but Jackson’s were all clearly quite loved and battered “look for writing as well” she fanned through the pages, holding it out in case there was anything that would fall to the ground, keeping an eye on the margins for any handwriting that didn’t look like it was Jackson’s. Pausing to meet eyes with the other woman when she brought up some of the questionable partners that Jackson had in the past, eyebrows raised slightly during the silence almost as if she was saying ‘you don’t need to say anything else’ she finished with the book in her hand and moved on to another “I wish he was more secretive with the others, he could have kept some of them secret” eyes still scanning the pages of the book as she listened to Luvena “wait, you don’t think he’s ashamed of us?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
☁️ ⠀  ⠀ ⠀  ⠀ ───────────  if there was ever any doubt to how little luvena knew about the word boundaries, the scene playing itself out in his apartment would be all the proof anyone would ever need. typically, she wouldn’t have cared this much ( if at all ) about the women jackson brought home. for the most part, they tended to serve as nothing more than fodder for her own jokes to be hurled at him for the choices he made. but there was something in the way jackson was clearly trying to hide her ( at least to luvena ). every questioned she asked went unanswered. each mention of her picture was shrugged off. he was even going as far as to denying she was ever at his birthday party to begin with. when she realized not even bowie seemed to have much information on the topic, drastic measures needed to be taken. it may not have been the most ethical way of getting what she wanted, but whoever said anything about her being ethical ? if jackson didn’t want them in his home, rummaging through his things, he was doing a pretty bad job at keeping them out.
“ she’s got him cooking for her ? ” the gasp was as over exaggerated as the notion was. with little to no information to go off of, luvena was taking any and every slight possibility and running with it. by this time tomorrow there would be a tale spun amongst their group of friends of how jackson was a gourmet chef for this mystery woman. was there any truth to it ? she didn’t know. did she care ? not entirely. “ oh my god, you were one of the kids in the photos ? how cute ! and oddly fitting for him. ” luvena would never admit it, but when she’d seen jackson had kept that picture of her and asher given to him as a joke it did make her smile. “ at first i thought it was some weird ass hit list, but now knowing that he has both present and past pictures of you really makes the sentimental idea sound a lot more accurate. ” she continued shuffling through books, keeping an eye out for the writing as bowie had suggested. though, bowie’s words did make her pause. “ he better not be. look at how much we care, sitting here combing through a bunch of books written by dead people because we want to make sure this woman isn’t a psycho. ” at least that’s the tale she’d spin if he ever found out. “ ...─── wait, they were in his room for a really long time, you don’t think there’s something in there ? ”
