The next two weeks passed by seamlessly. You and Jonah fell into a comfortable rhythm, just like old times. Jonah stayed with you a couple of nights out of the week, and invited you to stay with him on the weekends. You were happy. Things had finally shifted back into place in your life.
It was a Thursday morning when you set your things in your office. You opened a desk drawer, and smiled down at your hidden polaroid of Jonah's handsome, sleeping face. You gathered your pen and notepad to walk to the conference room for the weekly team meeting. Taking a seat towards the front of the table towards the projection screen, you noticed Jonah was across and a few seats down from you at the other end. The two of you exchanged a small smile. You still hadn't told anyone at the office about your relationship. Not because you were scared, but more to prevent meddling and interference. People tended to stick their noses in places they didn't belong.
Sebastian came in and immediately gathered everyone's attention.
"Alright, team. You know how it goes, we'll go over a brief summary of ongoing projects, and address any issues or questions. Vanessa will be joining us in a bit. She got held up by corporate this morning. Let's begin!"
Sebastian clapped his hands, and immediately clicked on the projector.
You had bristled at that name. Vanessa. Why did that sound so familiar? Your eyes briefly cast to Jonah, then to the screen to pay attention. You missed Jonah's nervous glance over to you. About halfway through the team meeting, a tall, slender, brunette woman dressed in all purple rushed through the door. Setting down her bag at the end of the table in front of your notepad, she huffed. She seemed a little out of breath. The previous discussion halted.
"Morning everyone. So sorry I'm late," she smiled, brushing a loose wave of hair out of her face.
"It's alright, Vanessa. We were just discussing the Johnson house project. Here, we'd like you to meet (Y/N), the newest member of our team," Sebastian extended his arm to you by way of introduction.
Vanessa glanced to you, and examined you for a handful of seconds before extending her hand, and forcing a smile.
"Hello, (Y/N), it's great to have you on the team," she curtly stated.
You reached forward and shook her hand.
"Thank you, happy to be here," you mirrored her smile.
Something was off about the woman, but you couldn't put your finger on it. She wheeled up a chair next to you, and spent the rest of the meeting interjecting here and there. Though, to be quite honest, she seemed rather bored by the whole thing. She was sitting in her chair with her arms crossed over her chest, staring blankly at the pictures of the different projects.
The meeting finally ended, and you got up from your chair to return to your office. When you looked up again, Vanessa had crossed the room, and was sitting on the table beside Jonah, who had also risen from his seat. From her body language, you could tell that Vanessa was trying to flirt. Jonah's eyes shared a fleeting look with yours before you turned to leave the room. It shouldn't matter. Women flirted with Jonah all the time. He was devilishly handsome, after all.
Calming your nerves, you sat back down at your desk to answer a few emails. You worked on editing pictures for the next hour, until you glanced at the clock and noticed that it was getting close to lunch time. Standing up from your computer with a stretch, you sighed. You wondered what the team would want to do for lunch today. No doubt Vanessa would be involved. Walking to the elevators, you found the crowd of your coworkers.
"There she is! (Y/N), we were going to the local pub for lunch! You're coming with, right?"
Your coworker Flynn excitedly asked.
"Of course," you smiled.
Your eyes darted down the hall towards Jonah's office, and as if on cue, he came around the corner. Vanessa was following him, chattering about nothing in particular from the sound of it. When Jonah came to a stop in front of the elevators, Vanessa wrapped her arms around his chest, and pressed her head to his back in an impromptu hug from behind. The sight made your adrenaline spike. Who did this woman think she was? Jonah flinched at her touch, and immediately pulled her hands away from his chest.
"Vanessa," he turned to meet her eyes.
"Please, no touching," he warned her.
She waved her hand dismissively.
"Oh, whatever. We're all friends here," she smiled.
Jonah turned back to the elevator with a grimace, his eyes connecting with yours on the way. This was going to be a long lunch, you could already feel it.

Returning to work, you were ready for the day to be over. The lunch hour had been filled with countless stories and meaningless chit chat from Vanessa. You were happy to be back in your quiet office.
You worked on some more editing, and putting together portfolios of a couple of ongoing projects. Luckily, the afternoon flew once you actually dove back into your work. Exiting out of all your programs for the day, you were getting ready to leave when there was a knock at your door.
"Come in," you called.
Vanessa opened the door and slithered in, closing it behind her.
"Ah, (Y/N). Getting ready to leave for the day?"
She clenched her hands in front of her.
"Yes," you replied awkwardly.
It was pretty obvious.
"Right. Well, I wanted to come have a chat with you, one on one."
You internally rolled your eyes. What now?
"Is there something going on between you and Jonah?"
You blinked, wondering if you heard her right.
"What? Why do you ask?"
"I'm only curious," Vanessa shrugged.
You straightened your back.
"If there is, I don't see how it's anyone's business here," you plainly stated.
Vanessa tsked.
"See, that's where you're wrong, (Y/N). I could have Jonah fired, or end his career in more creative ways," she hinted.
You squinted your eyes at her.
"What do you mean? Why would you do that?"
"Well, you see, Jonah and I have been friends for years. We go way back. If you're the (Y/N) that I heard about, and I'm guessing that you are judging by Jonah's longing looks, then it seems to me like you broke his heart back then. I think you need to let the man move on."
You shook your head at the ridiculous statement.
"You have no idea-"
"Oh, I have some idea," Vanessa interrupted you.
"Like I said, Jonah and I go way back. We've had some intimate moments ourselves. I held onto pictures that he sent me, and pictures of us doing the deed. It would be a shame if those pictures were to be leaked, and ruin his career here."
You paused.
"Why would you do that if you say he's your friend?"
"I'm tired of chasing him. Give the guy a clean break, and let him move on from the past. Honestly, you owe that to him after all these years. You have until Monday to decide."
You planted your hand on the desk, using the other to point at the door.
"Get out of my office," you fixed Vanessa with a stern look.
She smirked and waved, walking to the door, and leaving it open after her exit. You sighed, and slumped back in your chair. This was precisely why you hadn't wanted to tell anyone.
Your phone dinged with a new message, and picking it up to look at it, you saw Jonah's text.
Jonah ❤️
Can I come over to your place tonight?

The next morning at work, you were relieved to see that Vanessa wasn't there again today. Sticking to yourself and your office for most of the day, you weren't surprised to see Jonah show up at lunch. Knocking on your door, he poked his head in.
"(Y/N), can I come in?"
You nodded, leaning back in your computer chair. Jonah entered, softly closing the door. Walking to the front of your desk, he sat down.
"What's the matter? Something's wrong. You said you wanted alone time last night, which I'm fine with, but you're avoiding me at the office today."
You sighed, and pinched the bridge of your nose.
"Did Vanessa say something to you? I saw her come in here," he wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans.
"Yes, she did. I'll tell you later. I don't want to talk about it here. Can I come to your place for the weekend, and we can talk then?"
Jonah's smile was hopeful as he nodded.
"Okay. I was worried you wouldn't want to come over," he reached to grab your hand.
"Whatever the challenge, we can face it together."
You nodded.
"I know. We will."
You looked down at your joined hands.
"I'll give you all the reassurance in the world if that's what you need," Jonah added.
"That's not necessary," you giggled.
"But thank you."
⋆⁺。˚⋆˙‧₊☽ ◯ ☾₊‧˙⋆˚。⁺⋆
Sitting at Jonah's kitchen bar that night, you told him everything.
"It's not my business who you were with while we were apart," you ended your spiel.
"But I don't want to see you with another woman. And she threatened your job."
Jonah had been sitting on the stool beside you to listen. You put your head in your hands, and he immediately reached over to comfort you, pulling you into his chest.
"Hey, hey, it's okay. I'm glad you told me what happened, (Y/N). But you have to believe me when I tell you that she's lying."
You raised your head up to look at him.
"She is?"
He nodded earnestly.
"Yes. Vanessa and I met my freshman year of college, and we've talked on and off through the years, but we've never been intimate with one another. It was right after our split, and I was heartbroken, (Y/N). She tried too hard to fill your place in my heart, but she could never be you. She was never you," his hands came out to cup your face.
"And I never sent her pictures. I never sent anyone anything. I knew that we'd be together again one day, and I would never put myself in a position to lose you. Not again, sweetheart. I couldn't."
You sighed, wrapping your arms around his strong shoulders.
"Thank you for being so good to me. I'm sorry I got scared. I didn't know what to do, but I never intended to keep it from you. I just needed a little time to process."
"You don't have to apologize for that, love. I understand. Thank you for being honest with me. Vanessa is our Design Manager, but that doesn't give her total authority over my position. Leave it to me. I'll sort this out, and she won't be bothering you again."
"Okay," you breathed a sigh of relief, leaning into him again.
"Do you have ice cream?"
Jonah chuckled, rubbing your back.
"Yes, I do. I bought your favorite for tonight," he smiled with his chin on your head.
You pulled away from him to lovingly admire his face. You moved closer, placing a tender kiss on his lips.
"How'd I get so lucky?"

Monday morning when you went into the office, Sebastian called a surprise team meeting. This was your first since you started here, and you were curious to see what this was about. Sebastian entered the conference room behind everyone, looking perplexed.
"Alright team, I called you in here to announce a change in management. Vanessa is getting transferred to our cross-country office, and someone named Max is swapping to take her place here. This was a very sudden change in staffing, and I don't know the full reasoning. Regardless, we will welcome Max to the office with open arms. That is all. Everyone have a great day!"
Your eyes shot to Jonah's. He was already smiling at you. Filing out of the conference room, you made your way back to your office. You weren't surprised that a minute later, Jonah slipped in. You walked up to him, and put your hands on his chest.
"Thank you. What did you do?"
"I'm friends with the CEO. I told them that she was being inappropriate towards me and other workers here. It wasn't hard to get her transferred," he tucked a loose stand of hair behind your ear.
You kissed the tip of his nose.
"I feel better already."
"Good, (Y/N). Don't ever hesitate to tell me if something or someone is bothering you. I will always protect you."
You nodded, and buried your face in his chest for a hug.
"I love you," you mumbled, looking up at his shimmering blue eyes.
"I love you, too. Always," he whispered as he kissed your forehead.

About a year later, you loaded up in Jonah's car for a trip to brunch on a bright Sunday morning. Scouring pictures on your phone, you looked up to realize that you were not headed in the direction of the restaurant.
"Where are we going?"
Jonah showcased his dimples, but didn't look at you. Instead, he reached his hand over the center console, and placed it above your knee.
"Don't worry, you'll see," he squeezed your thigh reassuringly.
About ten minutes later, a familiar house came into view. You'd recognize it any day, even after all the builds and sites you've now visited for work. It was the house where Jonah confessed that he still loved you. Rolling up the driveway lined with trees, Jonah put the car in park. You stepped out, once again enraptured by its beauty. Jonah rounded the front of the car, and grabbed your hand as you ogled.
"I remember this place. It's so beautiful," you gushed.
You walked with Jonah to the front door, and he fished the keys out of his pocket. He unlocked it, and allowed you to step in.
"It's a showcase of my love to you. Do you remember what I said about the skylights?"
"Yes," you spun back to smile at Jonah.
"You said it's because I remind you of sunshine. Oh, and they can be used for stargazing."
"Precisely," Jonah smiled back at you.
He walked into the expansive living room area.
"That's why I figured we could put our couch here," he motioned with his arms.
"What did you say?"
Your breath caught in your throat.
"I said we can put our couch here, and we can spend our days in the garden that I built for you. I've already got the patio furniture picked out. I was going to let you decide on the color."
You stepped towards Jonah, grabbing his arm in disbelief.
"What do you mean?"
Jonah looped his hands around your waist, and gazed at you warmly.
"I bought this place for us, (Y/N). It was always the plan, I just needed to save up for it. I told you that I built it for you," Jonah touched his forehead to yours.
Your breath quickened, and you were suddenly getting hot.
"Jonah, why would you do that? I love it, but that's too much," you shook your head lightly.
Jonah's hand came up to caress your cheek.
"Shh. Don't be silly. Nothing is too much for you. Come on, I've got something else to show you," Jonah grabbed your hand again.
Stepping out onto the patio, you found an exquisite picnic set up on a blanket, complete with a bucket of iced champagne. Jonah led you to the feast. Once you were surrounded by flowers, food, and candles, Jonah got down on one knee. He pulled a ring box out of his pocket, and you gasped. Your hands clamped over your mouth.
"(Y/N), ever since you stole my heart all those years ago, when we were just a couple of stupid kids, it's always been you. We may have been kids back then, but we've proven that whatever challenges we may face, we can overcome together," he opened the box.
You gasped again at the sparkling diamond before you. You couldn't imagine what it cost. Placing a hand to your chest, you felt your heart trying to beat out of its confines.
"Will you make me the happiest man in the world? Will you marry me?"
Jonah barely got the question out before you were nodding with tears clouding your vision.
"Yes. Of course, Jonah. Yes," you chanted.
Jonah smiled, taking the ring out of its box, and sliding it on your finger. He kissed your hand, and stood up to kiss you. A tear rolled down your cheek. Pulling back, Jonah swiped it away with his finger.
"We finally get our happily ever after," Jonah whispered, brushing his lips over yours.

Secrets, promises and stolen kisses.
Tumblr media
In the bustling world of university life, Y/N and Jonah's lives are a tapestry of contrasts. Y/N, a humble yet secretly talented vet, and Jonah, with his undeniable popularity, seem to come from different worlds.
Y/N has always kept her profession a secret from university life, wary of people befriending her just for free vet advice, and discounts on operations/vet care. But fate intertwines two different paths when Jonah's dog Bella becomes paralyzed in her hind legs. Frantic and heartbroken, Jonah faces rejection from multiple vets and second opinions who suggested putting Bella to sleep. But Bella wasn’t “just a dog” to Jonah- she didn’t care about how he looked or how popular he was; she only cared about belly rubs and chasing squirrels. She taught him the art of unqualified love. How to give it, how to accept it. She doesn't care if you're rich or poor, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give her your heart and she’ll give you hers. He was adamant that someone out there could help her, and It was clear in everyone’s eyes that he wasn’t going to give up until he found someone who had the opposite opinion to the one he kept getting. He had become a force of nature—a man on a mission to restore his best friends mobility.
Desperation led him to a vet clinic almost an hour away, where he encounters Y/N.
Jonah’s popularity preceded him at the university campus—the guy who could light up a room with his smile, effortlessly navigating social circles. Y/N, on the other hand, moved with purpose, her steps measured and her gaze focused. She was the vet who slipped through the crowds, her secret hidden behind those warm brown eyes. She only ever had one close friend, Tiffany.
They’d crossed paths countless times—Jonah with his easy charm, Y/N with her quiet competence. The hallways, the coffee shop, the occasional nod during breaks—it was all part of the rhythm of campus life. Neither expected more; their worlds seemed destined to remain parallel, never intersecting. Until now.
Jonah was apprehensive because he assumed he would hear the same tired platitudes as every other veterinarian he visits: “There’s nothing we can do”, “she’s too far gone”, “I think it’s time”, “it wouldn’t be fair to keep her suffering much longer” and so on.
But then blurted out Bella’s story, top to bottom: and Y/N listened, her eyes holding determination, her hands gentle as she examined Bella. She promised hope, and Jonah clung to it. The Paws & Whiskers Veterinary Clinic was Y/N’s sanctuary—a place where barks turned into healing, and the scent of antiseptic mingled with endless miracles.
When he finished, she nodded, her gaze flickering toward Bella and back to Jonah. “I’ll do my best,” she said. “But if it’s okay, I’d like to ask….”
And there it was—the secret. Y/N’s hidden talent, her gift for healing animals. Jonah’s eyes looked into hers knowingly, as if he knew what she was going to say “you’re a vet”, he whispered.
She nodded. “I am. But I’ve kept it quiet. People can be… opportunistic.”
Jonah understood. If word got out, everyone would flock to her, seeking free advice, exploiting her skills. Y/N’s anonymity was her armor, shielding her from the world’s demands. Yet there he was, stood between Bella’s well-being and Y/N’s peace.
“I won’t tell,” he promised. “Your secret is safe with me.”
And so began their pact—the unspoken agreement to protect Y/N’s anonymity. Jonah watched as she worked wonders with Bella, her hands gentle, her determination unwavering. Bella responded, tail wagging, and Jonah marvelled at the young girl behind the vet’s mask.
As days turned into weeks, their interactions shifted. Y/N’s eyes held gratitude, and Jonah’s admiration deepened. They met in quiet corners outside of vet and university hours—the library, the beach, the park—where Bella could strengthen the sensation in her legs and their friendship could bloom. Jonah became a constant presence, their conversations shifting from Bella’s well-being to deeper matters, and Jonah found himself sharing stories he’d never told anyone- conversations flowed effortlessly and Bella’s recovery became their shared secret, a fragile bridge between them. They laughed over coffee had deep talks, and sometimes, their fingers brushed accidentally, sending sparks through the room.
Jonah marvelled at the way Y/N spoke to Bella, her voice soothing and full of love. And when Bella finally stood on her own four legs, tail wagging furiously, Jonah’s heart swelled. Y/N’s eyes sparkled with pride, and he knew he’d fallen—for Bella, yes, but also for the enigmatic, beautiful girl who’d brought hope back into their lives, and he wished so much that he could’ve got to know her sooner.
On one particular evening, the moon hung low, casting a silvery glow on the water. Jonah’s pulse raced as he stood by the lake, as he waiting for y’ns arrival. Y/N’s presence was a magnetic force that pulled him closer. Bella lay nearby, her eyes half-closed, as if sensing the gravity of the moment.
A cool breeze swept across the lake, ruffling Y/N’s hair and sending shivers down Jonah’s spine. He reached for her hand as she arrived, fingers trembling. “Y/N,” he said, voice barely audible, “there’s something I need to tell you.”
Her gaze met his, and he saw it—the vulnerability, the fear of crossing a line. “What is it?” she whispered.
Jonah hesitated. The weight of their connection pressed down on him—the shared secrets, the stolen glances, the way her laughter echoed in his dreams. Y/N wasn’t just anyone; she was the keeper of his heart’s secrets.
“I’ve been thinking,” he began, his thumb tracing circles on her palm. “About us.”
Her eyes widened, and he knew she understood. The tapestry they’d woven—the threads of friendship, the hidden talents, the way Bella had brought them together—it all led to this moment.
“What about us?” Y/N asked, her voice a fragile thread.
Jonah leaned in, his lips brushing against hers. Her heartbeat echoed in the quiet night, a rhythm that matched his own. His fingers trailed from her palm to her cheek, the softness of her skin a revelation. He moved a loose strand of her hair behind her ear, his touch lingering.
“I want this,” he murmured, leaving the rest unspoken.
And so, he kissed her—a gentle press of lips that held the promise of more. Y/N responded, her lips parting, and he pulled her closer. Their breaths mingled, and the world blurred—the moon, the water, the weight of their secrets. He kissed her again, this time trailing down her jawline, tasting the saltiness of her skin. Her neck beckoned, and he pressed his lips there, feeling her pulse against his mouth.
It was a moment suspended in time, where hesitation melted into longing, and the universe conspired to bring two souls together. Jonah lost himself in the taste of Y/N—the sweetness, the warmth—as if he’d been waiting for this kiss since the beginning of time.
He pulled away, both breathless, eyes locked—the universe itself holding its breath. Jonah’s hand still lingered on Y/N’s cheek, and she wondered if he could feel her heartbeat echoing through her skin. Words weren’t necessary; they shared an unspoken understanding—their feelings laid bare in that stolen moment. Y/N’s mind raced: What did this mean? Would it change everything?
They sat side by side, fingers brushing, Bella stirring nearby as if sensing the shift. And then Jonah broke the silence, his voice a tremor: “Y/N, I’ve wanted this for so long.”
Her heart fluttered, and she whispered, “Me too.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jonah had reached a point where he couldn't keep his feelings to himself anymore. He was falling head over heels for Y/N, and the only way he could navigate this confusing and exhilarating time was by confiding in his closest friends. "I can't stop thinking about her," he admitted, his voice tinged with a mix of excitement and anxiety.
His friends listened intently, offering advice and support, trying to help him figure out the best way to express his feelings to Y/N without jeopardizing anything and sharing her secrets. “just be straight with her, tell her that you love her”, Matt says.
Meanwhile, Y/N and her best friend were having a heart-to-heart conversation of their own. They had always shared everything, so it was only natural that Y/N would open up about the strange fluttering in her chest whenever she thought about Jonah. But just as she began to articulate her emotions, her friend dropped a bombshell. "I have to tell you something aswell," she said, her eyes downcast. "I have a crush on someone too, his name is Jonah." The revelation hit Y/N like a ton of bricks. She felt a pang of guilt twist in her stomach, realizing that her relationship Jonah could hurt her friend.
The situation left Y/N feeling torn and conflicted. On one hand, her heart yearned for Jonah, and on the other, she couldn't bear the thought of causing pain to her best friend. She wrestled with her emotions, trying to find a way to navigate this delicate situation without damaging her most cherished relationships. The possibilities and topics of conversations with Jonah and her friend had opened up a Pandora's box of emotions, leaving them all at a crossroads where every choice seemed to carry significant consequences.
Y/N’s guilt weighed heavily on her heart after she found out that her friend harbored feelings for Jonah—a crush that had blossomed quietly, like a fragile flower. But Y/N’s own heart had betrayed her, pulling her even more toward Jonah in ways she couldn’t ignore.
Y/N had tried to avoid Jonah for days after this. She took different routes in the hallways, rescheduled her vet consults, and even adjusted the timing of her evening walks to avoid crossing paths with him. It was clear to anyone paying attention that she wss acting out of the ordinary, but Jonah wasn't just anyone. He noticed the subtle shifts in her behaviour and the absence of her usual warmth. Determined to understand what was going on, he made it his mission to find a way to be with her again. Jonah's persistence paid off one afternoon when he managed to catch Y/N alone in a quiet corner of the library. Gently but firmly, pulling her aside and holding her close as he showered her with kisses, each one filled with the affection and longing he had bottled up during their time apart.
The conflict tore at her—the loyalty to her friend versus the undeniable connection with Jonah. She avoided him, not out of indifference, but out of fear. Fear that her actions would wound her friend, unravel their bond, and leave her standing alone in the aftermath. Yet, as Jonah’s lips brushed hers in that quiet library corner, she wondered if love could ever be wrong when it felt so achingly right.
“you have been avoiding me”, he said, taking her hands in his.
Jonah looked down into Y/N's eyes and spoke with a sincerity that left no room for doubt. He assured her that she had done nothing wrong and that his feelings for her had only grown stronger. He reminded her of the countless ways she had brightened his life and made him a better person. Bit by bit, Jonah's words began to heal the wounds Y/N had inflicted upon herself. As they stood there, wrapped in each other's arms, they both knew that their bond was unbreakable and that together, they could overcome any obstacle.
Jonah pulled away, finally mustering the courage to share his feelings. He looked deeply into her eyes, taking a moment to appreciate the sparkle he had come to adore.
"I love you," he said softly, his voice filled with warmth. Her eyes widened slightly, a mixture of surprise and joy dancing within them.
A tender smile spread across her face as the words sunk in. She leaned in closer, her heart brimming with emotion. The air between them seemed to hum with a newfound energy, a shared understanding that words alone could not convey. Their lips met in a series of gentle kisses, each one more passionate than the last. The world around them faded away, leaving just the two of them in their own private universe.
“I love you too”
I hope you all enjoyed this, any feedback would be appreciated, thankyou 🩷
