COVID-19 continues, much longer than I’d originally anticipated. When I enrolled in my MSW, I never imagined that I’d finish taking all five classes online.
This semester I’m taking:
Group Therapy
Interventions with Selected Clinical Problems
Race, Class, and Gender
Family and Child Welfare Services I (having already completed II)
Field Education Seminar IV
I’m thankful to be able to continue my clinical internship at PIECE and provide telehealth play therapy for my clients. Through this turbulent time, I’m focusing on staying the course, remaining committed to excellence, and remembering my professional motto: “Twenty-first century social work is social justice work.”

This semester was the most difficult yet, thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. With that said, although I no longer have a cumulative 4.0, I’m extremely proud of my third semester grades. Just one more semester of my MSW!

Today is the first day of my third semester of my MSW!
I’m looking forward to taking my first elective (Child and Family Welfare Services II), starting my field placement at the D.C. Department of Behavioral Health’s PIECE program (which is early intervention screening and play therapy), and possibly even conducting my own research study under Dr. Kolivoski’s supervision.

Happy New Year! Every year, I make the same resolution: Read. A lot. In many genres, many topics, and from many perspectives. In 2019, I read 68 books.
My favorites, in no order:
Tumblr media

The grades from my second semester are in! I’m particularly proud of the A I earned in my hardest class, Data Analysis.
Hello, cumulative 4.0!

I’ve been assigned to work with Dr. Karen Kolivoski! I’m so excited to assist in her research about reforms to improve the outcomes of young people who encounter the child welfare, juvenile, and criminal justice systems (known as crossover youth).
I’ve gotten some really good news! I’ve been awarded a Graduate Assistantship Award for the 2019-2020 academic year. I can’t wait to find out which faculty member I’ll be working with!

I’ve traded my beach bag for my bookbag and swapped long nights with my lapdog to my laptop. Yes, it’s official: summer is over, and class at HU is back in session.
Here’s what I’ve been up to since grades were posted:
I went home to Houston to see my parents and celebrate my mother’s birthday. It was a lovely trip of beachgoing, delicious meals, and spa visits.
I read 19 books, including Audre Lorde’s “Sister Outsider,” which has long been on my list.
My partner and I spent a weekend in New York. The highlights were seeing two plays and lingering in used bookstores.
I went to the Woodhull Foundation’s Sexual Freedom Summit conference, where I attended panels about sex education, criminal justice, Medicaid, and providing affirming therapy for people in nontraditional relationships.
It was a great summer for relaxing, and I feel ready to take on the semester. It’s sure to be a busy one, as I’m taking five classes, working as a graduate assistant, and interning at the DC Department of Human Services’ Family Administration department.

Today at 5 p.m., I’ll be officially signing off from my position as AMCHP’s communications analyst to focus full-time on my MSW and internships full-time.
I am honored to have spent the last three years working with a group of talented and dedicated professionals. I have learned so much – about maternal and child health, leadership, advocacy, and passion. I leave here with a commitment to equity and practical knowledge of public health that I will always carry with me through my career as a social worker.

I’m at the midpoint of my first semester of my master’s degree in social work at Howard University. Here’s what I’ve been up to:
I’m interning 16 hours a week at Girls on the Rise, an afterschool program for girls. I’m getting a firsthand look at trauma-informed care, developing and executing curriculum to improve clients’ life skills and self-esteem, and growing my engagement and assessment skills.
I’m taking a full course load, which is five classes: Social Work Practice and Processes, Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Research Methods, Social Work Policy and Services, and a field seminar. So far, I’ve gotten A’s on each assignment. Here’s hoping that trend continues!
I’ve continued my work with the Association for Maternal & Child Health, albeit in a slightly reduced capacity. I’m happy to stay at an organization that prioritizes racial equity in public health while I’m in school.

I’ve been focusing on increasing AMCHP’s visibility as a leader in Title V and maternal and child health through participation in thematic Twitter chats. Today we co-hosted a chat with Sen. Cory Booker, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Rep. Joe Kennedy III, Moms Rising, Black Mamas Matter, March of Dimes, ACOG, Every Mother Counts, and the National Partnership for Family and Women.
My tweets from this chat received 21,538 impressions, 421 engagements, and a 1.84% average engagement rate (which is noticeably higher than the health nonprofit industry’s median rate.)

I live-tweeted the House Energy and Commerce Committee Health Subcommittee’s legislative hearing “Better Data and Better Outcomes: Reducing Maternal Mortality in the U.S.” under the hashtag #act2savemoms. A significant conversation developed underneath that hashtag that included our ACOG, Every Mother Counts, and March of Dimes.
The 14 AMCHP #act2savemoms tweets accumulated 116,580 impressions and 3,750 engagements; they include AMCHP’s best-performing tweet ever, which reached more than 9,600 people through a well-placed mention of Rep. Joe Kennedy, who then retweeted.

Yesterday, I organized a Twitter chat to disseminate information about Zika virus. I created a toolkit of marketing tools (including graphics, suggested responses, and promotional materials), organized participants, and led the chat live.
The chat was joined by March of Dimes, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Public Health Association, and others. It reached estimated 93,863 accounts and generated 670,992 impressions.
