I'm not even exaggerating when i say that Charlie is the best OCD representation I've ever seen

I've had obsessive compulsive disorder for almost 10 years now and when i first read the heartstopper comics and i got to volume 4 (and also solitaire) i was really confused because i didn't know how OCD worked until then, it made me feel like i was seen and i realized it was because it's the first correct OCD representation I've ever seen

seeing a character with the same disorder as me and whose writing about the disorder isn't based in stereotypes or very incorrect things was one of the best things for my mental health, it allowed me to finally seek professional help because i realized i had an actual problem and i got diagnosed a couple of months ago

I will always be grateful for having Charlie as such an amazing representation <3

the sexual and taboo intrusive thoughts, compulsions, and obsessions need to be talked about more. i’m terrified to talk about them on my own because i know the average person will equate my thoughts to desire. i’ve been in a constant state of distress ever since i switched medications lol

i am once again asking people i know to do actual research on OCD and what it is b/c i saw someone equating POCD to actual predatory shit recently and i think im going to break out of my enclosure . OCD is not about “subconscious desires” it’s about fear. fears, aversions and repulsions, both subconscious and conscious. OCD forces you to obsess over things that make you anxious, scared, uncomfortable, or disgusted. possibilities (about yourself, your future, your loved ones and their futures, etc) that would give you nightmares if you considered them for too long.  literally the second you start thinking OCD may be about “subconscious desires” you have lost. you made an immediate left turn when you were supposed to make a right and now you’re on a completely different road. this applies to all forms of OCD by the way, even the most “disgusting”, taboo or “disturbing”. whichever form of OCD you’re thinking may be an exception to this rule, is not an exception. b/c there is none

if you have violent intrusive thoughts I love you. if you have sexual intrusive thoughts I love you. if you have bigoted intrusive thoughts I love you. you are not your thoughts and you are worthy of love and care and help and affection. you are not a monster you’re a person going through it and that’s okay

#it’s so tiring to have one of the main mental illnesses that aren’t destigmatized lol #i can barely even talk to my therapist and psychiatrist about my intrusive thoughts in case they think they’re wanted #and that’s their JOB bro…….. #my mind already tells me i’m deplorable and disgusting i don’t need a bunch of strangers telling me the same thing
