this is a long shot but i promised my mom i'd ask my friends. she's looking for a book title, she thinks it was probably a harlequin from the 70s or thereabouts. and all she remembers is that the main character and her siblings were all named after the city their parents were in at the time, so she has a brother named lonnie (london), a sister named paris, and she's named trieste, with a joke that she's glad her parents moved away from liverpool when they did. does that ring any bells? she's tried searching for it but unfortunately with those names all she ever finds are train tickets

everytime dungeon meshi focuses on characters outside of the touden party you can really feel the looming horror of the dungeon,, only the touden party is having a silly fun time by virtue of eating the horrors

Kind of hilarious to me how poorly the title "Mob Psycho 100" localized to English-speaking areas. To someone whose first language is English, it scans as:

Mob (Yakuza, Mafia)

Psycho (violent person with "crazy" behaviors)

Thus: a particularly violent member of organized crime.

But in Japanese it scans as:

Mob (background characters in crowd scenes in manga or anime)

Psycho (short for psychic)

Thus: a psychic who looks/acts like someone you'd never pick out of a crowd scene in a comic.

laios touden really is the best autistic character ive seen. the way that he was ostracized and misunderstood his whole life and even by his close companions. people constantly think he's weird and creepy. he feels a very deep resentment towards others for all this. he's not infantilized at all. he has a deep desire to become non-human to escape his own failure at being human. he's hot as hell. he does a really good impression of a dog.

a little obsessed with the story of how giacomo casanova was sharing a gondola with this random guy who suddenly started having a seizure, and casanova had some medical training so he stabilized the guy until the guy’s physician could be called. and then the physician bled the guy and put mercury ointment on him, which caused everything to get worse to the point that a priest was called to administer the guy’s last rites, but then casanova stepped in and washed off the mercury ointment despite the doctor yelling at him not to. and the guy recovered and turned out to be super rich and powerful and in gratitude bankrolled casanova’s debauchery for years until casanova got himself sentenced to five years in jail for blasphemy. also at one point he got shot through the hand in a duel and doctors wanted to amputate it but he said no it’ll be fine and it Was

So the whole “Batman’s mission is impossible and futile” thing is… eh, to me, because I feel like the read on Batman should be like. The fable about the girl throwing baby turtles into the ocean, knowing she can’t save them all from the seagulls swooping in to eat them. It shouldn’t be this nihilistic hopeless thing. Batman’s perspective shouldn’t be “I can’t save everyone so it’s meaningless and everything I do is just self-punishment”, it should be “It means everything to the people I CAN save.”
