In the Eye of a Hurricane (BOTGD 2 Oneshot)
(Takes place right after My Little Grey)
Chief Grey and her mother, Ingrid Bergman walked together through the portal with their arms wrapped around each other with the council and the villagers behind them. Both the Chief and her mother watched as families reunited...couples reunited...sons reunited with their parents after 2 brutal weeks of separation, and Grey couldn't help but feel a mix of anger and sadness. Because she couldn't protect her island...because of Ai and her pirates, her people...her family experienced such pain. She wanted nothing more than to look Ai in the eye and find out why, but she couldn't worry about that right now. All she wanted tonight...was to be with her family.
She was suddenly jolted out of her thoughts when a hand landed on her shoulder. She turned only to see Hroar looking at her.
"Why don't you go find your family, kid?" Hroar said to her gently. "We can handle things here."
Grey was immediately thankful that Hroar immediately knew what she needed. As much as she wanted to help her people get settled back in, her heart ached to be with her husband and their children and her beloved dragon. She made a mental note to find Ander, Asha, and Warren later, but right now, she wanted to be with Brandt, Sven, Dagny, Kari, Shadow, and Ingrid. "Thank you, Hroar," she said, "but...please come find me if you need help."
"Of course," he said.
Grey and Ingrid nodded in thanks and walked over to her and Brandt's house to find Brandt and the kids. As they walked over, Grey looked over and saw that they were walking by the prison, and she was able to see Lila and a few other rebels leading the pirates into the cells. The anger burned inside her again as she glared at them. She wanted...
Ingrid quickly stepped in front of her placing her hand on Grey's cheek so that her daughter was looking at her. "Don't worry about them, my little Grey," she said. "They're in prison...locked up. They can't do anything to you or your family anymore."
Grey smiled at her mother and nodded. "You're right, Mom," she said. "Come on, your son-in-law and grandchildren are eager to see you."
Ingrid smiled, and mother and daughter continued on and soon enough arrived at Grey and Brandt's house. Sure enough, they found Brandt, Sven, Dagny, and Kari waiting outside with all four dragons, Shadow, Pyro, SkySinger, and Scoot.
Brandt looked up and smiled. “Hey, there you are,” he said as he walked over to his wife and mother-in-law.
“Brandt!” Ingrid said as she walked forward hugging her son-in-law close.
“It’s good to see you, Ingrid,” he said hugging her in return.
As Grey watched Ingrid and Brandt, she noticed her three children out of the corner of her eye, and she saw that they were looking up at the house. It was then that she saw it. She had seen it a few times whenever the pirates took her out to relieve herself and heard Ai working on it from when she was her prisoner. Sven, Dagny, and Kari’s bedroom window was turned into a balcony. The pirate Ai had the gall to take over their home…to imprison her, Brandt, and their man…to whip Brandt in front of her…to make her feel lower than dirt and to imprison her in her own home. Anger boiled inside of her again as she glared at the balcony and clenched her fists so hard that they were shaking.
"Mom...?"
Grey was jolted out of her thoughts when she saw her three children looking at her with concern etched on their faces.
"A-Are you okay?" Sven asked.
Grey could only smile as the anger inside her subsided...and her fists unclenched while she focused on three of her favorite people. She remembered what her mom told her about what they did during those two weeks, and pride and love swelled in her chest as she opened her arms to them bringing them in for a group hug. "Yes, sweetheart," she said, "I'm fine. I...just...don't like what happened to our house."
"Hey," Brandt said placing a hand on her shoulder, "we'll fix it."
"Absolutely," Ingrid said pulling her daughter in for a side hug. "Now, why don't I bring you all to my hut? I can check you over starting with Brandt, and then we will go to my house and have a nice family dinner with your cousins, Warren, Asha, and Ander."
"That sounds like a great idea, Mom," Grey said smiling.
——-
With that, Ingrid led her daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchildren to her small healer hut, and she wasted no time in making sure that Brandt was first to be checked over. Thankfully, Brandt was wearing his vest, so Sven, Dagny, and Kari didn't see the lashings on his back. Thankfully, Indigo didn't disclose any details to them about that.
"You kids should wait outside," Grey said gently as she and Ingrid walked Brandt into the hut. "We'll come get you when Dad is taken care of."
"What?" Sven asked with confusion in his voice. "Come on, Mom, we can handle a few cuts and bruises."
"Plus, we want to be there for Dad," Dagny added crossing her arms.
"Please?" Kari added sheepishly.
"Guys, I really appreciate it," Grey said trying to keep her frustration in check, "I do, but...it's not something you need to see. Dad..." she sighed, "Dad was hurt pretty bad, and we don't want you to see it, okay?"
The three teenagers looked at each other sighed in defeat. They managed to hide their increased worry when Grey explained that Brandt was hurt. "Alright, fine," Sven said, "we'll wait out here."
Grey sighed in relief hugging them all close. "We'll call you in once he's done," she said. Then she slowly released them and walked inside the hut closing the door behind them. She absolutely hated leaving them in the dark, but she and Brandt needed to figure out how exactly to disclose everything they went through in captivity to Sven, Dagny, and Kari. Seeing scars all over their father's back was not the way to do that especially when she herself was haunted by the scars that marred her husband’s back. She clenched the door handle tightly until her hand shook as the memory once again resurfaced...Brandt screaming...the whip cracking...her crying and begging for Ai to stop it...Ai's cold and uncaring demeanor.
"I'm so sorry this happened to you, dear," she heard her mother saying to Brandt behind her jolting her out of the memory.
She could hear Brandt sighing but didn't dare turn around not ready to see the scars. "I'm sorry that I couldn't hold out longer for Grey," he said sadly.
Guilt and shame swirled around each other in the Chief's chest as she rested her forehead on the door. Her husband was sorry for not withstanding the pain longer...but she was the one to blame...for not protecting him in the first place.
"You have nothing to be sorry for," Ingrid said gently.
The Chief steeled herself silently thanking the gods that her mother and husband clearly didn't hear her come in. She needed a moment to herself, but now, she needed to be with Brandt and her mother. She took a deep breath and turned around, and sure enough, there was Ingrid and Brandt. Brandt had his back to her leaving his scars in full view, and it was easy to see that they weren't as fresh as they were 16 days ago. But they were still there. Her mother had her back to her as well checking the scars to see if there was an infection.
"H-How bad is it, Mom?" Grey asked after a moment.
Ingrid turned to her daughter with a sad smile on her face. "Don't worry, sweetheart," she said. "He's going to be fine. It doesn't look like there's any signs of infection."
"Well, that's because your daughter did a great job cleaning them up," Brandt said looking over his shoulder smiling at his wife. However, his face fell when he saw the look of sadness and guilt on her face…and the absence of their three teenaged children. “Where are the kids?”
“I had them wait outside,” Grey said as she walked up to her husband and mother. “I thought it would be better if they didn’t see, you know? That we could talk to them about it…later?”
Brandt nodded agreeing with his wife. He then slowly held out his hand inviting Grey to sit next to him. “Hey, what did I tell you?” he said gently but firmly. “This isn’t your fault. It’s theirs.”
“But—” Grey tried to protest.
“Not your fault, Grey,” Brandt interjected, “and I will spend the rest of my life reminding you of that if I have to.”
Grey couldn’t help but chuckle lightly with a small smile. “Okay,” she said, “but if that’s the case, then I will remind you that you have nothing to be sorry for either. I don’t want you to feel guilty for not holding on. You’re human.”
Brandt smiled as he leaned over and kissed Grey on the lips. “Deal,” he mumbled against her lips. He was thrilled that he could kiss his beautiful wife again. For 16 days, they were robbed of holding each other…kissing each other…touching each other when Ai and her pirates cruelly separated them, but that was over. They were finally together again where they belonged, but he had to remember that they were in the presence of his mother-in-law with their teenaged children right outside. They would have plenty of time to be alone together later. He pulled away with that thought in his mind.
“Alright, let me get some oils on these scars,” Ingrid said, “and then I can put new bandages on. Then you’ll be good as new.”
“Mom?” Grey said.
“Yes, my little Grey?” Ingrid said.
“Will he…will Brandt…” she sighed, “will these scars…are they…are they permanent?” She already knew the answer, but she wanted to hear it from Ingrid.
Ingrid sighed sadly. “I’m afraid so, Grey,” she replied, “but don’t worry. Only the skin was broken, so it wouldn’t affect him long term.”
“Okay,” Grey said nodding taking Brandt’s hand into hers holding it tightly. She was glad that Brandt wouldn’t be affected by the whipping he received, but…that didn’t stop the anger and guilt that welled up inside her.
——
After Ingrid wrapped fresh bandages around the scars and checked the rest of the Felman family, they found Lila, Jari, Kettil, Deo, Warren, Asha, Ander, and their family and went to Ingrid’s house for dinner. The family shared a large hearty meal, and Grey was more than thrilled to share this night in celebration of the island being taken back and the Rebellion rescuing them from captivity. She had almost completely forgotten about the pirates…almost.
Later that night, the group dispersed, and they all went back to their respective homes to get some rest as well to clean up any damage the pirates had done. Ingrid and Brandt initially suggested that the Felman family could all stay in Ingrid’s house, but Grey insisted that it would be better if they all slept in their house. It wasn’t that she didn’t appreciate what her husband and mother were trying to do, but the Chief knew she couldn’t run from what happened. She needed to face it.
Thankfully, the house was ransacked, but it was nothing that couldn’t be replaced or fixed. The biggest thing Grey wanted to do was get rid of that stupid balcony, but that was a project for another day. Instead, the kids went up to their room while Grey and Brandt went into theirs while Shadow stayed outside clearly understanding that her sister needed to be alone with Brandt for the time being.
“You know it’s not too late to go and sleep at your mom’s house,” Brandt said watching his wife brush her beautiful brown hair from where he lay on the bed.
“I know,” Grey said as she put the brush down and sat down in bed next to her husband, “but…I wanted to come back to our house. I can’t…I can’t run from what happened forever.”
Brandt nodded and smiled opening his arms inviting his wife to join him.
Grey wasted no time in sinking into Brandt’s embrace holding him close and resting her head on his chest…right where his heart was. “I was starting to wonder if I would ever get to be in your arms again,” she said after a moment. “I wanted nothing more than to just wake up and have it all be a bad dream and you would be sleeping next to me.”
“I know,” Brandt said holding his wife just a little tighter. “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel that way too, but it’s over, Grey. We’re together again. We’re back home. Our kids are upstairs. She’s locked up. She can’t hurt us anymore.”
Grey buried her face in Brandt’s chest inhaling his scent. “You’re right,” she said.
“Hey, we won’t be able to forget what happened,” Brandt said rubbing her shoulder, “but eventually, we’ll get to a point where it will be nothing but a distant memory. We’ll get through it. We’ve done it before. We can do it again.”
Grey smiled as she closed her eyes realizing that Brandt was right yet again. They’ve had their fair share of hardships over the years they had been together…Brandt realizing that he killed her father in battle…Greg dying in battle…Grey suffering the miscarriage and suddenly leaving to see Seasick…Haddock dying…Sven being kidnapped by Rhenco, and they always managed to find a way through it. They would certainly find a way through this…together. “You’re right…again,” she said. “And we will do it together…with our children.”
“Exactly,” Brandt said smiling as he gently lifted Grey’s face up placing his fingers under her chin so that she was looking at him. “But if it’s all the same with you…my dear Chief…” he brushed her hair behind her ear, “my beautiful Chief…I think we can start doing that with the kids…tomorrow. For now,” he kissed her slowly, “I want to just be with you.” He kissed her again.
Grey wasted no time in deepening the kiss wrapping her arms around Brandt’s neck. “Why, Sir Brandt, are you seducing your Chief?” she asked raising an eyebrow.
“Damn right I am,” Brandt said shifting them so that Grey was laying down on the pillow beneath him. "We were separated for 16 days. I didn't get to see you...didn't know where you were...didn't get to lay my eyes on your beautiful face," he caressed her face as she leaned into his touch, "didn't get to kiss you...didn't get to touch you all that time. And I want to make up for," he kissed her, "lost time."
Grey chuckled as Brandt kissed her again. "I do, too," she whispered against his lips. "I love you, Brandt."
"I love you, too, Grey." They resumed their kiss...until...there was a knock on their bedroom door causing them to pull away.
"Mom! Dad! Can you come out here for a second?" they heard Dagny say outside.
Brandt sighed putting his head down before they looked at each other smiling. They both knew that while they both wished to have their alone time together, they would never turn down their son or daughters when they needed their parents, and after being separated for so long, they didn't want to waste a single second being with them.
"Tomorrow night," Grey said simply.
"Tomorrow night," Brandt agreed.
They both got out of bed and walked out of the bedroom opening the door...only to find a very peculiar sight...Sven, Dagny, and Kari all sitting by the fire pit on some blankets with their pillows while Shadow was curled up nearby clearly asleep.
"Kids...what are you doing down here?" Grey asked with a raised eyebrow. "I thought you were going to bed."
"Well, we were," Sven said, "but..." he looked at his two younger sisters, "then we decided that...we wanted to be with you guys tonight."
Grey and Brandt softened as they looked at each other and then back at the kids.
“We originally wanted to come into your room and sleep with you guys there…like when we were little,” Kari said.
“But then…we realized your bed probably wouldn’t fit everyone,” Dagny added, “so we decided to sleep out here by the fire pit, if that’s okay.”
Grey couldn’t help but smile with tears in her eyes feeling a wave of nostalgia. She remembered all those times she and Brandt corralled Sven, Dagny, and Kari into their bed, and she told them stories about her adventures in the Grounded Dungeon Rebellion…watching them slowly fall asleep between her and Brandt. It was one of those moments that stopped occurring once Sven, Dagny, and Kari started getting older and definitely one that Grey most certainly missed. Now, there was a swell of warmth in her chest seeing that her kids wanted to be with her, but also a pang of sadness… Ai and the Crows of Crestwill left their mark on their family and on the island in more ways than one when they separated her and Brandt…and their entire family. However, like Brandt just said, they would move past it until it became nothing but a distant memory. She looked at Brandt, who looked at her with the same smile. As much as they would’ve loved to have some alone time together, they both knew that this was needed. They needed to be together with their children. They would definitely have some alone time together—just the two of them—tomorrow night.
“I think that’s a great idea, guys,” Brandt said wrapping an arm around Grey’s shoulders.
——
Brandt and Grey wasted no time in grabbing some extra blankets from their bedroom and adding to the blankets pile that their children put together and bringing one extra for them to share. Once that was done, Grey and Brandt wasted no time in settling in with Sven, Dagny, and Kari with Grey next to Dagny and Brandt on the opposite side with Sven while Kari remained in the middle.
“Alright, everyone all settled?” Brandt asked.
“I’m comfortable,” Grey replied.
“Me too,” Dagny and Kari said in unison.
“Same here,” Sven replied.
“This was really great, kids,” Grey said after a moment. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, Mom,” they said in unison.
“We sure have amazing kids, Grey,” Brandt said ruffling Sven’s hair earning a chuckle from his son.
“We sure do,” Grey said smiling at the sight. “Grandma told me what you three did over the past 2 weeks.”
“Oh? What did they do?” Brandt asked raising an eyebrow. He knew that they obviously helped them all to escape to the evacuation island before they faced Ai to take back the island. Apparently there was more.
“Well, Brandt, our son,” she reached over ruffling Sven’s hair earning a chuckle from the Heir, “stepped up as acting Chief. He worked to put together plans to free us.” She then reached for Kari’s cheek. “And our baby girl…stood by her brother and kept an eye on the island helping to plan everything.” She noticed Kari blushing, which made her smile even wider. “And finally…our middle child…she flew all the way to the Jaw on SkySinger for two whole weeks to get help from the Rebellion.”
“What?” Brandt asked propping himself on his elbow looking at his children with astonishment. “Dags, you did that?” He stopped when he remembered something. “I thought a messenger was sent to the Jaw. Why did Dagny go?”
“The messenger was killed during the attack,” Dagny replied sadly, “so I volunteered.”
Brandt stared at them in absolute shock and astonishment. His three children…his and Grey’s beautiful, amazing children, not much older than 18…took over the tribe, planned to take back the island…and flew to the Jaw for two whole weeks alone on a dragon. Sven was 18 years old…Dagny was 17 years old…and Kari was 15 going on 16 years old. When he killed Grey’s father in battle that fateful day, he never once thought that he would meet a beautiful woman…a Chief, fall in love with her, marry her, and raise three amazing kids, and he did. He and Grey raised amazing three kids, and they accomplished so much more than he did when he was their ages. “I am so proud of all of you,” he said smiling.
“We both are,” Grey added.
“Well, we’re just glad to have you guys back,” Kari said smiling at them.
“W-What is going to happen to those pirates though?” Dagny asked after a moment.
“Don’t worry,” Grey said gently, “they’re going to be moved to the Jaw tomorrow. Lila will take care of it. Those pirates won’t come near us ever again.”
“If they do,” Sven said, “we fight them…together.”
Grey nodded. “That’s right, Sven,” she said. “Together, but for now…let’s try to get some sleep it’s been a long couple weeks.”
All three of the Felman siblings nodded before closing their eyes.
“Good night, Mom,” Sven said. “Good night, Dad.”
“Good night,” Dagny and Kari said in unison.
“Good night, my darlings,” Grey replied.
“Good night, kids,” Brandt said as they watched them drift off to sleep. He couldn’t help but just stare at them.
Just as she was about to rest her head on the pillow, Grey noticed this and raised an eyebrow looking at him. “What is it?” she asked.
Brandt sighed and looked at his wife. “I just…” he exhaled, “we have three amazing kids, Grey.”
Grey widened her smile as she looked at them as well. “Yeah, we do,” she said brushing a hand through Dagny’s hair.
“We’ve done a pretty good job raising them, I’d say,” Brandt said.
Grey smiled even wider. She might’ve been feeling guilty and ashamed over what happened with Ai taking over their island, but the one thing she knew for sure was that she and Brandt did a great job as parents and would continue to do so. “And we will continue doing so,” she said. “I love you all so much.”
“I love you all too,” Brandt said smiling. “You know I’d kiss you, but” he gestured to the three teenagers between them.
Grey chuckled. “I know,” she said, “but don’t worry, Sir Brandt. You and I will be doing plenty of kissing. Like you said, we need to make up for lost time.”
Brandt smirked wiggling his eyebrows earning a giggle from Grey.
“But I know one thing you can do,” Grey said as she rested her head on the pillow. She then reached out her hand to Brandt above the kids’ heads. “Hold my hand? I’m afraid that if this is all going to be a dream.”
Brandt smiled and rested his head on his pillow reaching for Grey’s hand holding it tightly. “Of course, my love,” he said. “It’s not a dream. I promise you, it’s very real.”
Grey smiled even wider. Brandt was right. It wasn’t a dream. It was all real. They were together again with their children, and their island…their home was taken back from the pirates. There were some scars, but with time, like Brandt said, it would become a distant memory. “I love you, Brandt,” she whispered as she fell asleep.
“I love you too, Grey,” Brandt replied.
With that, all the Felmans were fast asleep. Tomorrow was going to be a new day.
