ian chesterton and barbara wright are the blueprint because the doctor was initially just this old, kinda tetchy scientist who thought humans were stupid and also annoying, but then he accidentally kidnaps these two teachers because they followed his granddaughter home after realizing her address was an empty lot and growing worried for her. they cared enough to get personally involved beyond what was technically required of them.
throughout their adventures he watches as barbara defends ancient civilizations, remaining kind and empathetic in the face of violence and pain. he sees ian risk everything time and time again to get barbara and susan home safe. he watches them convince others to stand up and fight for what’s right. he sees the way they never give up, never give in, and above all, always try their best to do the right thing.
they don’t always get it right! but they never stop trying, and slowly, ever so slowly, we see the doctor change from a man who holds himself above and apart to the quipping, quirky hero we are so well acquainted with in new who.
the doctor has always modeled his morals on the humans he travels with. they are the ones he turns to when he begins to fly too far above it all. so really, we owe the existence of the doctor to ian and barbara: the first of so many. they deserve more love.

Nah Ryan forgiving his dad is one of my least favourite Chibnall era scenes icl. He did nothing to earn his forgiveness. He left him as a child to cope with his mum's death by himself, didn't speak to him for years then didn't even show up for Grace's funeral. He then comes back with a toaster oven and expects hugs and smiles??? He never apologised. He just said he was going through it but he never actually said sorry for anything. This is why I kinda wished they gave the killing Tim Shaw subplot to Ryan instead of Graham bc it would've made more sense. Tim fridged his only active family member left in the picture so him having a revenge arc in the finale could've slapped. Then they could've made Resolution a ThirteenRyan heavy ep bc they both know what it's like to lose their family members. Ryan's family to Tim Shaw and Thirteen's family to the Daleks in the Time War.

Lost followers for this womp womp but it is what it is. You don't have to agree with very post but at least read what I've written. I can critique TenMartha whilst seeing the bad faith criticisms of it. I've critiqued the racial fetishy comments from some shippers at the same time, to sit here and claim racism in doctor who begins and ends with 5 TenMartha shippers is so incredibly disingenuous. It wasn't TenMartha shippers that attacked Freema. It wasn't TenMartha shippers that made those racist memes. It's not TenMartha shippers that have attacked my Black mutuals on here by camping in their asks and DMs. When time and time again we've seen how misogynoir hurts and kills Black women in real life by white men and others, the concept that a niche of Black women in the fandom that ship Martha and Ten are contributing to that, on the same level as that or worse from stans that have NEVER spoken on institutionalised misogynoir and never will let alone support the material conditions of Black women in real life... Don't. Just don't.
They only context for me where anti-TenMartha makes sense is if you are against ALL romantic pairings with the Doctor because of how short-lived their human relationships are, a hardcore aroace doctor truther that thinks the character should be romance free 100% OR if you only see them being compatible with their immortal equals like the Master or River Song bc only other Time Lord/immortals could realistically (for Doctor Who anyway) have a relationship with them. Saying "but the Doctor's a bad person" and that TenMartha glorifies that... whilst you have a tenrose or twelveclara pfp I'm looking at you funny.

And yes the racism is a valid point but again only if you're willing to extend this equally and from what I've seen, TenMartha antis and criticals have not. The Doctor's too racist for Martha but not enough for Bill, Ryan and Yaz? The Doctor's a racist but you're happy for Rose to date one in place of her Black ex? For River to marry one? Happy for Donna to settle with one with her mixed Black daughter? Like can we actually deep the implications for a min? If there's anything I hate more than racism in fandom its the weaponisation of actual oppressions for stan arguments like people are dying Kim!

had enough of the idea that its women’s inherent attractiveness that puts us in danger. lets talk about the ways in which ugly women are treated as grotesque and untouchable, and yet at the same time are still sexualised and objectified. lets talk about the humiliation of being assaulted by a man who isnt even attracted to you

I’m gonna cry!!

white ppl portraying moc (or male characters who are coded as poc) as like. haha stupid funy h*mbos is always going to bother me bc not only does it often result in instances of white people turning moc into a harmful stereotypes, its also them taking away the intelligence and autonomy of moc in an attempt to render black and brown men into something completely palatable for white audiences because moc with intelligence, strength, and autonomy are just too scary and threatening for yall ig. like this bs comes in 2-3 flavours: u either dehumanize moc and portray us as stupid and/or brutish which feeds the broke white narrative That moc Are Dangerous and should be Put Down by c*ps or w/e, or its reducing moc to the dude who dies first and exists purely for the sake of making white ppl laugh, and/or they exist to solely be juxtapositioned to a (white) leading character in a way that makes the white lead look good (usually at the expense of the mcoc being taken seriously)

i think one of the things that really gets me about the maddian dynamic in maddy cool is that when maddy is acting out because of her recent transformation, rhydian won't embarrass her in front of anyone and call her out until they're on their own. and even though she's being snarky and prickly, he takes a gentle approach, telling her to run with him so she can work out her excess energy. it's only when she pushes too far that he actually expresses his irritation and anger at her, but it's always coming from a place of concern. like he didn't want to go to the party and they had just fought but he goes anyway just in case maddy shows up. the way he treats her in that episode is so telling, and i always thought occam's razor was when he realized he was falling for her but his behavior in maddy cool just confirms it for me because he is starting to show and verbalize his concern for her

im noticing that for a lot of americans “free palestine” has been an ideological motto and symbol rather than them actually believing in their heart that freedom is attainable and necessary
