Imagine if NaruSaku ended up becoming endgame tho. Sasuke has these amazing encounters with Sakura in the war arc and thinks he could rekindle love in his existence but then comes into the realization later on that Naruto and Sakura have something. Like, this manifests through a tight hug or a sudden declaration of love during the scene where she heals their arms.

It hits Sasuke that he missed his chance of a one great love.

He finds himself still waiting at the Konoha gates for his penance mission and unconsciously hopes Sakura would call his name and stop him from going away again. Or to take her with him. He would consider now. As long as he gets to be with her. But she doesn’t come.

It’s Kakashi who sees him off. He gets the feeling and tells Sasuke it was his absence that gravitated them towards each other.

And he feels sick to his stomach. Because he thought he had something and he thought it would wait for him but now he’s lonely and alone and suffering.
