Connection description: Mina and this WC met whilst she was studying at Cambridge but parted when Mina uprooted and left the UK to live in New York City, having had something of a Normal People-esque dynamic. Now Mina has returned to the UK many years later, they have been thrown back into each other’s lives thanks to situational circumstances but unable to pick-things-up from where they left off (whether they would like to or not).
I would picture them as something like; a high-profile politician for a rival political party; a detective working on the investigation into her father’s death, or someone otherwise involved; a member of the Catholic priesthood, for those Fleabag-esque vibes; anything else you can think of that leaves the two at a frustrating stalemate.

HELLO AND GOOD EVENING, LONDONERS! We’ve been open for just over a week now and have loved seeing your characters find their footing in the city they all call home, and so thought now was a good time to declare our first challenge! Our challenges will be designed to be a little more in-depth but, for something a little less intensive, we’ll be announcing smaller tasks as well!
This is a character-driven challenge that, though not mandatory, we’d love everyone to participate in so we can get to know each of your characters a little better and delve a little deeper into their backstories.
Given the nature of the challenge, we encourage you all to use this as a chance to create — or delve deeper into your existing — Wanted Connections and potentially help put the spotlight on them to prospective players!
OF NOTE:
- Be sure to tag your entries as #lc.challenge and #lc.challenge001.
- The deadline for completion is: SUNDAY 13TH MARCH, 6PM EST / 11PM GMT.
THE CHALLENGE
We’d like you to write a 500-750 word flash-fiction piece centred on a relationship or an exchange with a significant person from your character’s past, using one of the below prompts. This can be done in whatever way feels natural (be that using it as a piece of dialogue, inspiring a relationship dynamic, recalling a brief but core memory, etc.) but you must use the prompt as selected by this random (1-15) number generator.
Holding a grudge is like swallowing poison and expecting the other to die.
What a plot twist you were.
A mistake repeated more than once is a decision.
I deserved a better goodbye.
They had swallowed it whole and pretended it meant nothing, and therefore it had come to mean everything.
Everyone has their own version of a memory.
You deserved everything that’s ever happened to you.
How confusing to live in the shadow of a shadow.
It touched me to be trusted with something so terrible.
What trouble we go to, trying to fool people who see right through us anyhow.
They’re the kind who want something badly, and then discover that the price they have paid for it is too high.
I feel like you ruined me forever.
Loyalty is complicated. From the outside, it's duty; from the inside, it's love.
I suppose there is a certain crucial interval in everyone’s life when character is fixed forever.
The world is too quiet without you nearby.
