yea i'm gonna talk abt it more in-depth in a post later but ohhhh this whole convo where sam is like "when this is all over i'm going back to school" and dean being like "it's never going to be over" because the saving people part of the motto is Not incidental for him. it's the whole point. meanwhile for sam (and john) this is all about their own personal revenge quest. self-centered, singular focus. but it's not like that for dean. because dean cares. about the whole world even.

dean grumbling abt having to wear little outfits on a case in 1x16 when canonically we know dean loves a little outfit and then following up his grumbling with money issues being the reason he’s so annoyed:

and like. it’s played off as a joke as always like ‘ha ha our lives are so hard scamming money’ but like. money anxiety and financial insecurity would be a very real fear for dean and also it’s not the first time he’s put emphasis on how he earned his money only to have sam make light of it. and it just highlights in my mind how much dean really did shelter sam from their shitty childhood and how much responsibility dean took on when it comes to their finances for sam not to have the same anxieties surrounding spending money like in 1x05 Bloody Mary where sam just drops a ton of cash to bribe some guy and dean’s like quietly losing his mind watching this all go down and then snaps at sam that he earned that money and sam just doesn’t see it as a big deal. wild

I'm going to make my response it's own post because I think the point is important

As someone who is autistic and has BPD and CPTSD and loads of trauma yes you sometimes need to change how you interact with others to keep people around

When I was 13 I hit the few friends I had when I was angry

I had to change that in order to keep those friendships

When I was in my early 20s if I was losing an disagreement with my husband I would threaten to kill myself. My husband told me it hurt him and was cruel and manipulative behaviour, because it was.

So I worked hard to change that to keep my relationship

It's easy to say "I shouldn't have to change for others" and that's true to an extent. You shouldn't change your interests or passions or dim your light. And you should have space to be imperfect and flawed and not have to pretend your ugly bits aren't real. But if something you are doing it causing other people harm you kinda need to change that.

That's called "living in a society"

People adapt to each other and make space for each other in their lives. You adapt to them and they adapt to you

You start being more diligent about throwing away the empty toilet roll because it really bothers them. They start warning you before they run the blender because you hate loud noises

I stopped threatening to kill myself because I was mad I was losing an argument and my husband stopped being so vocally judgemental amount media he personally dislikes

There is a certain type of person who heard the phrase "your emotions are valid" and took that to mean "my emotional reactions and my behaviour are always objectively correct because my emotions are valid and if you have an emotional response or react to what I'm doing negatively then you are wrong and you can't be hurt because my emotions are valid"

And that's a recipe for disaster

Your emotions are valid to feel. They are how you feel and there are reasons you feel the way you do

However, your reactions and behaviour are something you can learn to control and can be irrational

We live in a society and we as people change each other as we interact and that isn't necessarily a bad thing

also i have never thought of dean allowing gadreel to possess sam as a violation of sam’s autonomy. dean was acting basically as a healthcare proxy for his brother who was in a coma, making medical decisions for sam because sam was not able to do so himself. it’s not like sam was sitting there actively saying “do not under any circumstances let a strange angel possess me” and dean went ahead and did it anyway, directly violating sam’s vocal wishes. multiple times over the course of s8, whenever dean and sam had talked about it, sam had said that he didn’t want to die, he wanted to live. based off the information he had, dean made yes an admittedly drastic decision, but not one that’s totally out of left field for the in-universe world? when dean was dying in season three, sam wanted him to harvest organs and keep himself alive like frankenstein’s monster. so. let’s have some perspective

#dean’s ‘choice’ was between watching his brother die and making a risky decision that led to his survival #sam was in a coma #in the hospital dean makes the decisions for him anyway because sam CANNOT make decisions atp #and sam later says he wouldn’t have done the same for dean but he WOULD have #he would have done it even if dean had the ability to say no and he tries to
