Purely disgusting and deplorable. Great post
Tbh I really don’t like the attitude of many in the black community towards Asians and the issues between our communities. It’s not “caping”, it’s accountability. It would be one thing if it was white people or some other group committing these anti-Asian hate crimes, but this problem is in large part coming from our own community — why should we not call out “our own” for inflicting the same racialized violence that we’ve long suffered onto another group?
I really don’t like this mentality of transactional activism in general. It flies in the face of the whole point of activism — didn’t we learn that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere? That’s why even violent criminals have rights to be defended. All of us humans share a common humanity and any human rights being violated puts them all in jeopardy. Defending the safety of even people who (you think) hate you is defending yourself. These violent bigoted attackers on the streets are a threat to everyone, what makes you think they’ll stop at just one group of people?
If you don’t want to concern yourself with “other people’s” issues that’s one thing, but it behooves us to not actively make them worse. Already, racist rightoids have seized on the black-on-Asian attacks to push a divisive agenda demonizing black people, stoking antiblackness, and enticing Asians over to their reactionary politics. The ways in which the two communities have harmed each other will continue being weaponized in turn rather than earnestly addressed, and it will just spiral into some tit-for-tat he-said-she-said race war between the black and Asian communities, all while the whitey sits back and laughs. This anti-Asian racism by black people (and anti-black racism by Asian people) in the end benefits nothing but white supremacy. Progressives ceding the condemnation of the anti-Asian violence committed by black people over to the regressives is yet another cowardly mistake of the Left, afraid to tackle contentious topics and complicate its preferred narrative.
Sure, it can be said that “POC unity” was already a myth and the antiblackness among other groups has been existed, but pushing it even farther isn’t helping and is in fact only hurting. The fact is that even though both sides be racist to each other, black people are the ones escalating it to asymmetrical violence — beating someone up is considerably worse than calling them a slur. Is making excuses for mugging old ladies empowering the black community or bettering us in any way? Are we any closer to closing the racial wealth gap or ending mass incarceration? No no and no, honestly all this is doing is reaffirming the exact same old stereotypes and handing the racists ammo. Why make their job easier?
I remember a while back hearing about these two black guys raping a homeless Chinese woman to death and I was so disgusted I nearly vomited and cried. How can you look at that crap and think this innocent lady’s suffering is somehow justified or at least not something to be outraged about because some bigot who happens to share her ancestry followed black people around in their store? Why should an innocent individual minding her business have to suffer and die silently for the collective sins of her race? And this case ties back to what I mean about transactional activism coming around to bite the ass. These men are misogynistic, sadistic predators who felt emboldened to target a woman because of her race, calling her racist and sexist slurs while they were abusing her. These men are among us in our own community, the one already struggling under the highest rates of femicide, DV, and SA. These men are a danger to all women, including and especially black women, and their fetishistic anti-Asian attitudes are also linked to misogynoir.
In short. This denial and deflection isn’t doing anyone any good. Sooner or later this will reach a meltdown and it won’t be good. The Asian community absolutely should be addressing its antiblack racism, but on the same token, innocent individuals shouldn’t be made to suffer for the bullshit of their racial group. Racialized violence and hate crimes against random people are by no means an acceptable or proportionate response to the bigotry of their group. And black people can’t “just sit this one out” both morally and practically, because even though these hate crimes aren’t perpetrated against us, they’re perpetrated BY us, and thus have to do with us. The black community has to have the integrity to confront racism and bigotry within our ranks; attempting to play tit for tat and waiting for the other to make the first move is a losing game. Protecting their humanity is protecting ours.
