Ruben and Carla have grown apart. With Rubens career taking off he leaves Portugal to live the life of his dreams, breaking Carla's heart doing so. Years later, upon his return home, Ruben learns that Carla has moved on, happily engaged to another man, but not any man, Ruben's childhood bully João Mendes.
Enjoy!
Christmas, three years ago,
It was still early in the morning. However, Carla's father entered the kitchen to see his daughter already up and about.
"Carla, what's this?"
His eyes widened at the state of the room. Wrapping paper lay tossed onto the kitchen floor, along with men's shoes and clothing.
"Pai, you're up! Good morning."
Carla barely threw her father a second glance, as she was too invested in the activity of wrapping more gifts.
"What has happened to my kitchen?" Her father exclaimed. All he wanted was to make a fresh cup of coffee. But how on earth would he even make it to the kitchen counter with all the unwrapped items on the floor?
"Oh, sorry." Carla said. "I'll clean it up once I'm done."
"But querida, why are you wrapping more gifts? I thought your mother already put everything under the tree last night?"
"Yes, but those gifts are for uncle Martin and aunt Carolina."
"But my dear, why do you feel the need to spoil your cousin this way? I thought we all agreed to cover your cousin's tuition fee for flight attendant school as a Christmas present this year?"
"Pai," Carla chuckled. "These gifts aren't for Maria."
He scratched his head. "No, who are they for then?"
"They're for Ruben."
"Dias?"
"Yes."
Carla had been so excited leading up to Christmas. She hadn't seen Ruben in months since her decision to move back home from England. Their talks over the phone just wouldn't do anymore, so when Ruben told her that he was coming home for Christmas, Carla was simply over the moon, rushing to buy him gifts.
"Carla?" Her father said, clearing his throat. He had fallen silent for a moment, regarding his daughter with a troubled expression. "Are you sure he is coming?"
"Of course." She chuckled. "Ruben is coming for Christmas, he said so himself."
"When?"
"What do you mean?"
Carla paused the gift wrapping, noticing the look on her father's face.
He cleared his throat once more.
"When did he tell you that he was coming, since neither your mother and I have been informed."
"Yeah, sorry about that. I was so wrapped up in buying him gifts that it must have slipped my mind to tell you."
"I see." Her father muttered.
"What?"
"Nothing, nothing." He waved.
"No, tell me dad. What's wrong?"
"It's nothing querida, I just don't want you to be disappointed again."
Carla's parents were accepting of her and Ruben's decision to try long distance, however, it wasn't the first time that Ruben promised to come visit for the holidays but ultimately failed to follow through. And each time left Carla heartbroken, leaving her family to pick up the pieces.
"Dad, don't worry. Ruben has been very busy lately, I told you how life was when I was living with him in Manchester. However, he is coming home for Christmas" She assured. "He is probably in the air on his way here as we speak."
Carla's father sighed but cleared a path as he made his way across the kitchen. He patted his daughter's head, planting a soft kiss on top of it. "Okay, querida. If you say so. Your mother and I just don't want to see you get hurt again."
"I won't be Pai, don't worry"
Worry.
Days passed and Ruben was nowhere to be seen. Carla was a nervous wreck, constantly checking her phone for any sign of him. She was starting to worry that he had changed his mind again. Christmas Eve was about to be Christmas day. After spending the day helping her family feed the less fortunate, Carla took it upon herself to drive to Ruben's to see if he for some reason had gone over there without notifying her. Perhaps he was jet lag, exhausted from his two hour flight from Manchester to Portugal.
"Senhora Dias?"
"Senhora Dias?"
It was all in vain. Ruben's parents' house was found empty, their car gone from the driveway. Carla was starting to feel a bit embarrassed, having once again fallen for Ruben's empty promises. Carla didn't know how much of it she could take anymore. Maintaining a long distance relationship was simply tearing her apart from the inside out.
"Carla? What's the matter?"
Carla returned after taking the long way home, her car radio on full blast to tune out her sobbing.
"H...he's not coming, is he?" She sniffled, terrifying her mother at the door.
"Minha querida."
Carla's lips tremble from holding back the  tears. Her mother was quick to pull her into the house and in for a hug. The rest of her family were poking their heads out from the living room to see what's the matter.
But then, the doorbell rang.
"It's him!"
Carla's heart skipped a beat as she rushed to the door, hoping against hope that it was Ruben. And when she opened the door, there he was, standing tall and handsome in his full grown beard, like her very own Santa Claus.
Ruben had a big smile on his face. "Merry Christmas, babe," he said, sweeping Carla into a hug. "I'm so sorry I'm late but you know how my mother is."
"Bernadette!" Carla's mother exclaimed. Ruben's mother appeared in the door.
"Gloria!"
The two women embraced each other as Ruben's mother entered the house followed by Ruben's father and brother, who looked miserable carrying big bags of...
"I hope you don't mind, but we brought gifts!"
"We were out shopping all day." Ruben smiled. "I got something for everyone."
Carla was over the moon. She had never been so happy to see anyone in her life. She had been dreaming of this moment for so long, and it was finally here. She forgot all about her family's skepticism and just enjoyed the moment, basking in Ruben's embrace. It was the best Christmas Eve in Carla's life, with all of her and Ruben's family members gathered.
"I missed you."
Ruben stayed with Carla for the night, holding her close, serenading her face with kisses.
"So much." She whispered.
They lay in the dark with Ruben on top. His breath was heavy against her skin, the panting increasing with the pressure of his cock against her pelvis.
"Ruben, tell me you'll never leave me."
"I'll never leave you." He kissed her neck, moving on to bury his face between her breasts. They were naked under the sheets. Skin against skin.
"Promise me." She gasped.
Ruben lifted his head, a smile on his lips. His hands searched for hers in the dark, pinning them above her head. "I've already made my promise." He said, fiddling with the ring on her left finger. "You're mine forever Carla."
"Forever?"
He bent down and kissed her. "Forever."
Carla wanted to be sure, sure that Ruben would always come back to her no matter what.
"Fuck." He groaned, his cock aching to be inside of her.
"Put it in." She nodded. "I'm ready."
"I didn't bring anything." He said, thankful that the sheets prevented the tip of him from slipping inside of her. He was leaking already.
"I don't care." Carla said. "I want you like this, now."
Ruben paused all movement, raising himself to his elbows to meet her eyes below him. "Are you sure?"
Her tongue swiped across her bottom lip. "I'm sure Ruben. I want you."
He hesitated, but the ache between his legs was unbearable. Carla didn't make it easy for him to resist her either as her legs spread, inviting him to place himself between her.
"Fuck, Carla." Ruben rolled his hips until his cock aligned with her entrance. Carla's thighs wrapped around his waist, locking him in.
"Please." She begged.
Ruben was conscious for the first few strokes, but quickly went under her spell as the demon inside of him took over. He fucked her raw that night. Perhaps not their most gentle encounter. Either way, Carla was determined....determined to have Ruben's child.

Warning - mentioning of abortion
Tumblr media
Ruben and Carla have grown apart. With Rubens career taking off he leaves Portugal to live the life of his dreams, breaking Carla's heart doing so. Years later, upon his return home, Ruben learns that Carla has moved on, happily engaged to another man, but not any man, Ruben's childhood bully João Mendes.
Enjoy!
"What does that even mean?" Ruben's brother, Ivan, laughed.
"I don't know." Ruben rubbed his temple, feeling a headache coming on upon his return from meeting Carla. He sat slumped down on his parents couch, going through the emotions. "All I know is that I'm getting her back." He said. Having retold his brother about the event.
"By what, begging her until she gives in?"
"No?" Ruben frowned, rejecting his brother's desire to make him feel better. How could he, feel better, when the love of his life was slipping away.
"How then?"
"I don't know, okay." Ruben stood. "But I'm not letting her marry João Mendes, that's for sure."
"So crashing the wedding is it?"
Ruben shrugged. "If I have to. If it comes down to it. When is it exactly?"
Ivan chuckled. "No idea, I wasn't invited."
"Me neither." Ruben muttered.
"Well, can you blame her?"
"Ivan, she's marrying João Mendes, of all people."
"But can you blame her?"
"What?"
"For moving on, I mean? You've been gone for a long time, Ruben. How can you expect Carla to wait around for so long?"
"Because...."
Ivan crossed his arms. "Because what?"
"Because she promised that she would."
********************************************
"So how did it go?"
Carla ignored her cousin, who despite her demands, had waited up for her.
Carla crossed her room and threw herself face down on the bed.
"That bad, huh?"
She groaned into her pillow.
"Wow. This I want to hear." Maria buckled up.
"He's gonna win me back." Carla said, shifting her head to the side. "No matter what."
"Damn, Ruben told you that? Aunt Gloria is gonna freak."
Carla squinted her eyes in pain. "It gets worse."
"Worse?"
"Yes. Ruben thinks I'm still marrying João Mendes."
"Why?"
"I'm not sure. But I think my mother told him that we were still together when he came by the salon the other day."
"The drama!" Maria gasped.
"Will you be quiet?" Carla hushed. "The only reason I didn't bother to correct him was because that seemed to be the only thing stopping us."
Maria frowned. "Stopping you from what?"
Carla bowed her head in shame, blurring out the words. "From ripping each other's clothes off."
"Carla."
"What am I gonna do?"
There was no point in denying her feelings for Ruben, they were still there and still as strong.
"I say, buy the next plane ticket out of here. To Madeira perhaps?"
"I can't?"
"Why not?"
"Because Mamãe needs me."
Carla turned to lay on her back, the tears swelling up in her eyes. Visiting the cemetery today, Carla understood the pain that her mother still had buried inside of her, how lonely these past years must have been without Carla's father around. Perhaps Carla made it worse by announcing her break up with João,  considering how happy her mother had been helping her plan for the event.
"I'm sticking around til the end of the month." She said, "My job has already allowed me the leave since I asked for it ahead of my wedding with João."
"Well, I'm leaving after this weekend." Maria said. "And I did not come home to mourn over lost love. I came to party with my cousin who is finally single for the first time in what, twelve years?"
It was strange, but true. Carla met Ruben when they were ten. They got together when they were fourteen, stuck together until she was twenty-three and not long after their break up she met João Mendes. The truth was that Carla hadn't been single for a minute, nor did she know how to be.
"Tomorrow you and I are going to do what single people do best."
"Which is?"
"To shop until we drop, duh."
Carla wasn't one for shopping. To stand in front of a dressing room mirror eventually became dreadful, considering how much weight she had lost and gain during her year of depression. However, she did enjoy strutting through town. Carla spent the next day admiring her hometown by the coast, greeting familiar faces walking by, as well as catching up with her favorite cousin, who seemed to have a great life going on for herself.
"I can't believe you get to travel the world like that, doesn't it get claustrophobic, working as a flight attendant?"
"No. I love it."
"Well, then I'm happy for you." Carla admired her cousin. She was two years younger but had much more confidence than herself, especially when it came to putting oneself first.
"Have you spoken to João lately?"
Carla snorted. "No."
"So I take it he didn't take the break up very well."
Upon their separation João had referred to Carla as an indecisive selfish little child. Words that still haunted her today.
"No. No he didn't."
"Oh. Well, I'm sorry about...."
"Mari? Mari Fernandes, is that you?"
Another familiar face came walking down the street.
"Santina!"
"Mari! Why didn't you tell me that you were back in town?"
The two women rushed to embrace each other, excluding Carla for a good two minutes. Santina was Maria's best friend in high school. Their friendship had been a dynamic one, the two of them often getting into more trouble than they should. But who could blame them when Santina Rivera at sixteen years of age, inherited more money than Carla would ever save up in her lifetime. Her parents death was a tragic way of acquiring her wealth, nevertheless, like Maria, Santina's attitude towards life was nothing short of adventurous.
"And Carla!" Santina squealed, acknowledging Carla who was standing to the side. "My favorite babysitter. How have you been, girl."
Santina was a hugger, a firm one at that.
"Great." Carla groaned.
"Congratulations on your engagement. Everyone is talking about it."
"Oh, no Santi. Carla is not...."
It was impulsive and a bit childish, but stomping Maria's feet was the only way to shut her up. "Aaa!" She groaned, throwing Carla the nastiest of glares. Carla ignored her and smiled playfully. "Thank you Santina, for the congratulations."
"I love weddings, but truthfully when I heard that you were getting married, I thought it would be too...." Santina paused, curiously tilting her head.
"What?" Carla said, feeling targeted.
Santina shook her head. "Nothing, I just remember when we were younger, how you and Ruben Dias used to...."
"That was a long time ago." Carla mumbled.
"God I wanted what you had. He was the hottest guy in school, don't you remember Maria?"
"Thought his brother was hotter." She shrugged.
"Either way." Santina waved. "When did you guys break up? You were together for a long time, no? Even when he was playing for Benfica. Did you move to Lisbon with him or....?"
"A long time ago." Carla clarified. "Ruben and I broke up a long time ago. I'm with João Mendes now."
Carla ignored the chuckles that Maria let out beside her, but she didn't like talking about her business in the street like this, especially not with Santina Rivera, who was a well known gossip. Thankfully Santina took the hint and ended the conversation there.
"You guys are coming to the party that I'm throwing on the beach tonight, right?"
Maria perked up. "Party? What party?"
"My clothing line Saint Sure is celebrating the opening of my second boutique in Lisbon. Please come, it would be really nice to catch up some more."
"We'll be there!" Maria assured.
Carla on the other hand, could think of a million things that she rather fucking do.
******************************************
Except for training with his national team, Ruben came home to relax, to catch up with old friends before heading back to England. However, it was hard to do these things when wherever he went people flocked after him like birds. He used to be able to walk freely in his hometown, which he really enjoyed since it made him feel like a normal guy. But with Manchester City's latest successes it was now nearly impossible to be left alone.
It's the reason Carla left him, Ruben was convinced. She stuck with him through it all. The rise of Ruben's football career happened before her eyes. Carla even made the effort to leave home and move with him when he went off to play for Benfica. Of course, Lisbon wasn't too far from home. Carla often went back to visit her family. However, when Ruben asked her to move to England with him that's when she just couldn't take it anymore. Although Carla made the effort to stay overseas with him for a year, she never really settled down. And Ruben being off training all the time made it difficult for him to look after her, to make sure that she was alright. It was one of his biggest regrets in life, not being able to make Carla feel at home with him.
"Well, well, well. Look who showed up, Ivan and Ruben Dias. To what do I do the honors?"
"Santina, you know us." Ivan smiled, greeting her with a kiss on the cheek. Ruben did the same. "We could never say no to a party, especially if we're celebrating the success of your business."
It was more Ivan who couldn't say no. Ruben only tagged along in the hopes that Carla would be at the event. Santina was a bit younger than himself and Carla, but he vividly remembers her hanging around the two, bothering them as preteen children do teenagers. At that time Carla and Ruben were showing a bit more interest in each other, which people around them had noticed. Their family members called it true love because of the early age that they found each other. Ruben called it a blessing, a blessing that someone as beautiful as Carla even bothered to look at him twice, considering Ruben still had buck teeth during those days.
"Well, to that I am grateful." Santina smiled. "How about a photo?"
A cameraman popped up out of nowhere, but Ruben and his brother complied to pose for a picture. Ruben had to pose for a few more after that, since his appearance at the beach caused a bit of a stir amongst the party guests. It became exhausting at some point, but Ruben found the strength to endure once he spotted her, Carla, and her cousin Maria. She wore a flowery sundress, whilst her cousin wore a bikini. Most people at the party were dressed half naked, including Ruben with his unbuttoned shirt. It was a beach party after all. Carla, however, stood puttering around the bar, looking rather out of place for some reason.
As the party went on, Ruben found himself excusing himself from conversations after losing sight of her. He asked around if anyone had seen her, but no one seemed to know where Carla had gone.
"Ruben." Santina interrupted his search. At that point of the night she was a bit too tipsy for his liking,  Ruben who didn't have anything to drink for himself. "Funny how your mother is trying to set us up." She said, slurring slightly on her words.
"Yeah, funny." Ruben turned his head in search for Carla. There was no point in staying if she hadn't stuck around.
"She's not wrong though, we would make a cute couple."
Ruben looked down. "We would?"
Santina shrugged. "I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I've always had a crush on you when we were younger. It got to a point where I used to beg the Fernandes family to let me stay with them, knowing that you were always over at their house."
"Yeah, I wanted to be with Carla." Ruben said, hoping that answer would set his feelings for Santina straight. He also made the mental note to tell his mother to stop setting him up with other women. He only had eyes for one.
"And now she wants to be with João Mendes. Funny how time works."
Ruben clenched his jaw at the mentioning of his name.
"Didn't the two of you get into a fight that one time." She chuckled. "Don't tell me that it was over Carla Fernandes?"
"It wasn't." Ruben grunted, knowing damn well which fight Santina was referring to. The fight between Ruben and João Mendes happened at school, on the football pitch, during a match where his team was struggling and João Mendes had blamed it all on Ruben's terrible defense. It was a silly fight, but Ruben who, even back then, took his dreams of becoming a professional football player very seriously, snapped at the thought of not being good enough. And for the words to come out of João Mendes mouth, had pushed him over the edge.
"Anyway, how is life in England?" Santina asked.
"Great. Have you seen Carla?" Ruben was tired and ready to leave, but not without being given the chance to talk to Carla.
"She left to get some air." Santina muttered. "By the pier, I think."
"Thank you." Ruben said, excusing himself.
He made his way towards the pier, leaving the party behind. His heart skipped a beat seeing Carla's silhouette posing against the descending sun. Ruben knew he shouldn't go, but he couldn't resist the opportunity to spend time with her again.
Ruben found Carla sitting on the edge of the pier, staring out at the waves.
"Hey," she said softly, turning to him.
She must have seen him coming.
"Hey," Ruben replied, taking a seat next to her.
They sat in silence for a few moments, watching the waves roll in.
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, Ruben. Never been better."
He chuckled at the sarcasm in her voice. He had missed it, her humor.
"Your mood...." He said, careful not to express himself too vigorously. "Does it have to do anything with us?"
"Us?" Carla turned to look at him, her expression furrowed. "There is no us, Ruben. Not anymore."
He nodded understandingly but in the back of his mind Ruben still had hope, he was gonna win her back.
They sat there for a while longer, watching the stars come out and listening to the sound of the waves. As the night wore on, the tension between them eased a little, at least to a point where they both knew that they had to talk about what was really on their minds. Starting with Carla.
"You left me when I needed you the most." She said,
"I know and I'm sorry." He really was. It was shortly after Christmas Eve three years ago that Carla's father grew ill. He died shortly after, whilst Ruben was away, living the life of his dreams in England.
"I was so lost, Ruben. So lost without you and I hated myself for being so weak."
"Don't say that." Ruben stretched out a hand in an attempt to touch her.
A mistake.
Carla shrugged off Ruben's hand, followed by a warning stare for him not to try anything again.
"Carla, you have to understand..."
"No Ruben, I don't."
She stood.
Ruben had to contain himself not to let his gaze wander up her bare legs as her dress blew in the wind. "Carla." He sighed. "Then please tell me. Tell me how I can make things better between us? I'll do anything. Anything."
"Ugh." She groaned in annoyance. "You really don't get it, do you?"
"Get what?"
"I still have feelings for you, Ruben. A part of me has accepted that I always will."
Ruben looked at her, his eyes searching her face. "I still have feelings for you too."
Carla shook her head, as if Ruben was completely missing her point. "We're not good for each other, Ruben. You have your own life now, as do I.
"Fuck that." Ruben stood, his height overtaking hers. "We're perfect for each other Carla and you know it."
Her eyes widened, stunned by the passion in his voice.
"There's no other girl in the world for me but you. I love you Carla."
"Ruben."
He went to touch her again and to his surprise Carla let him wipe away a fallen tear with his thumb.
"I love you too."
Ruben's hand fell. Her voice had been as low as a whisper, nevertheless, he heard it.
"You do?"
She nodded.
It was bold of him, either way, he went for it. Ruben stepped forward and went in for the kiss, capturing Carla's lips with his own.
Her breath hitched as he pulled her flush against him. Her lips were cold in the night, but oh so familiar. Ruben knew the taste of Carla as well as he knew his way around a football pitch. As he felt her ease into him, allowing Ruben's tongue to enter her mouth, Ruben's hand slipped from between her shoulders to her lower back, pressing Carla's body hard against him.
A sigh. Carla let out a sigh deep down her throat, to which Ruben hymned happily against her lips. They made out for a good minute or so, before allowing each other to catch their breaths. Although the dark night, Ruben could tell that Carla wasn't grinning like he was. The opposite. She looked conflicted and angry with herself.
"Ruben." She said, stepping away from him, wiping away their kiss with the back of her hand. "I'm still marrying João."
Ruben's hand went pinch the skin between his brows. "Why, Carla? Why him, of all people?"
"Because he didn't leave." She snapped. "João was there for me when I needed him the most. Unlike you."
"Carla, I told you that I wanted to come back. But your family...."
"My family was only trying to protect me, Ruben."
"Protecting you from what, me?"
She fell silent.
Ruben frowned. "Carla? I would never..."
"I know." She nodded. "I know you would never do anything to hurt me, at least not on purpose."
Ruben shook his head, desperately in need to touch her, to have Carla in his arms again. "How...how did I hurt you?" He asked, desperate to know.
"It doesn't matter, I'm over it."
"Over what? Carla..." Ruben grabbed her wrist before she could turn her back on him. "You need to tell me how I hurt you, it's the only way I'll know how to make things right again."
"You can't!" She cried.
"How do you know, you haven't even..."
"Because, Ruben.....I had an abortion."

Ruben Dias x Reader - Good Luck Charm
As a United fan, that was a hell of a game 😁
Either way, I wrote this fic for the man city girlies ❤️
Tumblr media
Ruben is upset for getting knocked out of the ucl and blames it on Reader.
Enjoy!
You walked through the door, heels clicking on the hardwood floor. Having watched the replay of the match on the plane, you anticipated what was to come. Ruben would be upset for sure. It was such and important game to him. Telling him about closing your first major deal at work would have to wait.
You stepped into the dimly lit apartment, announcing your arrival. "I'm home!"
Your voice bounced off the walls with the echo, however there was no response.
"Ruben?"
You search for him in the kitchen without any luck.
"Hello? Is anyone..."
You paused in the frame to the living room. Ruben was sitting on the couch, his arms crossed, scowling at the TV.
"Hey, babe," You said, trying to sound cheerful. "When did you get in?"
He shrugged his shoulders, not giving you a second glance. You stepped out of your heels and approached the couch. "I've missed you." You crawled over to him, planting a kiss on Ruben's cheek before settling down beside him. "Have you eaten yet?"
"No." He grunted.
"Well, do you want me to make you something, or should we just order take out?"
Ruben turned to you, eyebrows furrowed.
"What?" You chuckled. He looked a bit intimidating, but since it was unusual for him to be as grumpy as he was, your reaction was to laugh.
"Take out?" He questioned. "Since when do we order take out?"
"I dunno. I thought maybe it would cheer you up. A pizza always puts a smile on my face."
Ruben snorted. "You're fucking unbelievable."
"Hey?" You frowned.
Ruben left your side and got up from the couch.
"Baby, what's the matter?"
"Don't 'hey babe' me," He snapped. "My team lost today. And it's all your fault."
"What do you mean?" You asked, trying to keep her cool. "How could it be my fault?"
"You know how," Ruben said, his voice rising. "You're my good luck charm. And when you're not there, I always lose."
You sighed, having heard this before. You had tried explaining to Ruben that you couldn't be present at every game, but he never listened. He was convinced that you had some kind of magical power that could influence the outcome of sports events.
"Look, I'm sorry, Ruben," You said, trying to placate him. "I really am. But I can't be at every game. I have a job and a life of my own."
Ruben scowled at you. "You never understand anything," he said. "You're always so fucking selfish."
You felt a sting of hurt. You had never meant to be selfish. You had always tried to be supportive of Ruben and his sports career. But it seemed like no matter what you did, it was never enough.
"I'm sorry, Ruben," you said again, your voice shaking. "I'll try to be there for you more often, okay?"
Ruben glared at you for a moment, then stormed off to your room, slamming the door behind him. You were left alone in the living room, feeling hurt and frustrated. You didn't know what to do or what to say when he got like this. Ruben was upset, and rightfully so. Perhaps giving him space was the best thing you could do.
That night, Ruben stayed in your room, leaving you enjoy the evening by yourself. You took yilour time in the shower after dinner and only then dared to enter your bedroom. The room was dark. Ruben lay on the bed with his back to you. You let your towel fall to the floor as you put lotion on your body before jumping into your pajamas, which was just one of Ruben's t-shirts that were big enough for you to sleep in. It smelled like him, which you loved. And you had a feeling that Ruben wouldn't like being near you for a while, so the smell of him would have to do.
"I'm sorry."
You were surprised.
As soon as you slipped under the bed cover, you felt movement behind you, followed by Ruben's arm snaking around your waist,  pulling you to lay closer to him.
"I'm sorry for what I said." He whispered, his lips gracing the side of your temple.
"It's okay." You nodded. "I get it. I can't imagine how...."
"No." He groand. "What I said to you was unforgivable no matter how angry I am about the game."
"Ruben." You turned to face him. You could only make out the silhoutte of his face, nevertheless your hand went to rest on his cheek. "It's okay, I know you didn't mean any of it."
"I love." He said.
"I love you too."
Ruben's hand went from your waist to the back of your head, tilting it backwards as he leaned forward and kissed you. His stubble tickled your face, the smell of him invading your space.
"I meant what I said though" He nodded.
"Oh. Well I didn't mean to be selfish,  but my job..."
"Not that."
"No? What then?"
There was a puase. You could tell that Ruben's eyes searched your face. He sighed. "You're my good luck charm, Y/N. I really mean that."
You smiled.
"I want you with me every game and I know that's selfish of me but it's what I want. It's what I need."
"You need..."
"You." He nodded. "I play better when I know you're watching."
"Ruben, that's...." The sweetest thing a person has ever told you. However, you weren't able to express your joy as Ruben leaned forward again, pressing his lips against yours. This time, he pressed you harder against him, desperate to have you close. You felt him grow stiff against you and gasped at the sensation of his hand, snaking its way under your shirt, cupping your breast.
"Ruben." You moaned. "I love you. More than anything."
"I love you too." He said, but for the moment he loved your body more, doing absolutely everything to expose it.
Your shirt got tugged over your head and tossed into a corner somewhere. Ruben had already moved to tracing kisses down your belly, not stopping until his head rested between your legs. That's where he paused, looking up at you, his eyes now clear in the night.
"What?" Your hand lay on top of his head, gripping a bundle of his hair.
Ruben smiled. "So, how was work?"
You shook your head in disbelief, "Just finish me off, you superstitious idiot."

Enjoy!
Carla trudged through the cemetery, the weight of her grief heavy on her shoulders. It had been three years since her father's passing, and yet the pain still felt as fresh as if it had happened yesterday. As she reached the grave, she knelt down and gently placed the flowers she had brought on the headstone.
"I miss you, Dad," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I wish you were here."
"We all do, querida."
Carla stood and was immediately wrapped up in her mother's embrace. She couldn't fathom the weight of her mother's grief. Seeing her tears almost made Carla regret her decision to meet with Ruben behind her back. However, it had to be done. She had to break their promise.
"Should I pick you up later?" Maria asked, who was kind enough to drive Carla to the gymnasium where she agreed to meet Ruben.
"No." Carla sniffled, wiping away the last of her tears. "And don't wait up for me either."
"But..."
"I'm serious Maria. I'll tell you all about it tomorrow."
"Fine."
Carla leaned forward to hug her cousin. "Thank you."
"Yeah, yeah. Just don't do anything you'll regret."
Carla stepped out of the car, Maria's words haunting her as she made way towards the stadium around back. The gymnasium was the local sports center for kids. Carla used to come there to play tennis. She wasn't any good but continued to show interest in the sport well into her teenage years. It was mostly due to the fact that Ruben would accompany her there every week. He had football training in the stadium located behind the gymnasium. At first Ruben was shy to let Carla watch him play, but after sometime, as their friendship grew, as well as their feelings for each other, it became their thing, hanging around the stadium after training. They'd talk for hours about everything and anything. Those were some of Carla's most cherished memories from her childhood. Funny how Ruben was included in the majority of them.
"Carla?"
She arrived to the stadium assuming that she was early. However, as she walked through the gates she noticed a figure puttering around on the football pitch.
"Ruben?"
He made his way towards her. Carla gasped as she had yet collected herself from her visit to the cemetery.
"Carla, you came." Ruben marched with big steps. He crossed the field within seconds and before she could flee he was standing in front of her, happy to see her.
"Ruben I..." She wasn't prepared for the wave of emotions that hit. The close up sight of him, even the smell of him, made Carla lose her trail of thought. "I shouldn't have come." She whispered and made the motion to return to the gates. Ruben's hand caught her wrist however, making her spin back around and face his furrowed expression. "Carla, what's wrong?" His dark eyes searched her face, perhaps noticing her stained eyes and runny nose.
"Nothing I..." Ruben wasn't supposed to see her like this. He was supposed to see how well she was doing without him. How happy she was to have moved on. Carla had to redeem herself. Fast.
"Why are you crying?" Ruben was pulling her towards him. Carla was too numb by his touch to fight. He was reaching for her face, his fingertips bracing her skin.
"Ruben?" she gasped. But he ignored her, his palm cupping the side of her face, his eyes inspecting the outlines of her head, hoping to find a wound, something, to explain why she was already so upset.
"Ruben I'm not...."
He stopped to look at her.
"I'm not hurt." She nodded. "I'm just....my family just...."
"Yes?"
"We were just at the cemetery."
"Oh."
Ruben's shoulders withered, however his hand remained on her cheek.
"Yeah."
The openness of the stadium enclosed around them and so did the darkness of the night. If only the clouds would scatter to reveal the hidden stars in the sky.
"I'm so sorry for your loss, Carla." Ruben's hand left her cheek and suddenly reality hit. "I know how much your father meant to you."
Carla was taken aback by his kind words. But it also made her remember why she was there in the first place. "He's been gone a long time, Ruben. "
"Three years, no?"
"Exactly, a long time."
Three years was also how long it was since Carla last saw Ruben. After their last rendezvous on Christmas eve he left the country and made it clear that Carla was nothing but a bump in the road to him, a taste of home which Ruben felt that he needed at the time.
"How have you been?" He asked, hands shoved into his pockets.
Carla shrugged. "I've been alright. How have you been?"
Ruben mimicked the shrug of her shoulders, a sly grin on his lips. "I've been alright."
Carla realized that she wasn't in any type of mood to be playful with Ruben, turning the charm bracelet on her wrist. She was prepared to get straight to her point in meeting him. However, Ruben ruined everything by talking.
"Look, I know I haven't exactly been there for you during this time."
"You didn't have to Ruben, we weren't together."
"Yeah, I know that. But you are still my friend Carla, I still care about you and your family."
"Do you?" She said, not Carla's intention to snap at him. Ruben stepped back, a skeptical expression on his face. "Like I said Ruben, three years is a long time. I would never let a friend wonder why I haven't been in touch with them for so long."
"Here we go again." Ruben scratched the bridge of his nose, sensing the start of a fight. "Haven't we been over this Carla? It's not like I didn't want to see you for the past three years, but after Christmas Eve your family made it very clear that you wanted nothing to do with me."
It was true. Christmas Eve three years ago was the start of Carla's one year depression. Since Ruben was the blame for it her family did everything in their power to keep him away from her, mainly lying about Carla's whereabouts whenever Ruben's family would ask of her. Carla felt bad. She loved Ruben's family, but it was all for the best to cut ties with them too, at least in order for her to truly heal.
"They are right Ruben, I want nothing to do with you." Carla said, hoping that Ruben didn't noticed the strain in her voice.
"Then why are you here?" He said, looking truly defeated.
Carla removed the ring from her bracelet and held it out in the palm of her hand. "To give you this." She said, failing to meet Ruben's eyes, although she imagined that they were looking down at the palm of her hand, at the ring.
He stepped forward, hands out of his pockets. Carla flinched at the touch of him, of Ruben, closing the palm of her hand with his own. The ring was left buried beneath.
"What are you doing,  take it." She said, looking up at him. His expression was hard to read but he was far from angry with her. "I gave it to you, it's yours." He said.
"Well, I don't want it anymore."
Ruben's lips parted with her words, a silent gasp leaving his mouth.
Carla almost wanted to take back what she said, the expression on his face striking her heart.
"So it's true then?" He said.
"What is?"
They were still holding hands, Ruben's enclosed over Carla's. If he would just take back the stupid thing and set her free, she thought.
"You're marrying João Mendes."
Carla's eyes widened. "Who.. ?"
"Your mother was happy to tell me when we stopped by her salon the other day."
"Right. Ruben, it's not...."
"It's okay, Carla. I'm not angry."
She frowned. He should be. Ruben had every right to be angry with her for being promised to another man, breaking theirs in the process. How come he wasn't, Carla frowned.
"I'm not taking back the ring." Ruben said, letting go of her hand.
"But..." Carla stomped her feet. Very childish indeed. "You can't do this to me."
Ruben stepped back, but kept his eyes on her. "I'm winning you back, Carla, whether you like it or not."
"What?" She couldn't believe her ears. "Ruben?"
He hesitated, but allowed himself to step up to her again, this time with less distance between them. "I'm not letting you break our promise Carla, do you hear me?" He put a finger to her chest, just above where her heart would be. A touch that made Carla's knees buckle. "I'm winning you back. Whether you like it or not."

Ruben stalking his exgirlfriend in this chapter is hilarious to me 😅
Tumblr media
Ruben and Carla have grown apart. With Rubens career taking off he leaves Portugal to live the life of his dreams, breaking Carla's heart doing so. Years later, upon his return home, Ruben learns that Carla has moved on, happily engaged to another man, but not any man, Ruben's childhood bully João Mendes.
Enjoy!
Carla had done enough crying for one person, enough was enough. She got up and out of bed for the first time since her arrival to her parents house.
"Carla, you're up."
"Finally." Maria sighed.
The atmosphere was odd as she entered the kitchen downstairs. Her aunt and uncle stood at the sight of her and so did Carla's mother, only Maria remained seated at the table.
"What?" Carla frowned.
Her mother stepped forward, her voice soft. "How are you feeling, querida?"
"Um...better now." She replied. Sure, her eyes were still puffy from crying but it's not like she wasn't the cause of it. She broke up with João Mendes, not the other way around.
"Please, sit." Her uncle said, offering Carla to take his seat at the table.
"It's okay, uncle Martin, I'm just gonna grab a drink and go."
"Go where?" Her mother flinched.
"Up....stairs?"
"Oh, okay."
There was a unified sigh of relief.
"What's going on?" Carla asked. "Why are you all acting so....strange?"
"Strange, who's acting strange?" Her aunt chuckled nervously.
Maria rolled her eyes. "Okay, I'm guessing none of you are gonna tell her?"
"Tell me what?"
"Maria, don't!" Carla's mother snapped.
"Mom?"
"Carla." Her uncle approached, putting a hand to her shoulder as to guide her to the breakfast table. "Have something to eat, querida. You must be starving after all those days spent in your room."
"No." She shrugged him off. "Not until you tell me what the hell is going on."
"Language Carla."
She ignored her mother, turning to her cousin for answers.
"Ruben's back." Maria said, not sugar coating the big news.
"But he's not staying for long." Her mother was quick to add, seeing how Carla had stiffened. "Gloria brought him to the salon the other day. The audacity of that woman. Nevertheless, Ruben is only here for a short visit. He's preparing for a tournament of some sort."
"Of some sort." Her uncle scuffed. "What your mother meant to say is that Ruben is back training with Portugal for the European championship this summer.
"I see." Carla nodded, the initial shock having left her. However, now she understood why there was such commotion when she entered the room. "Was there something else?" She said, her stale reply shocking everyone.
"Well, we thought that you may want to stay inside as to not bump into each other in the street." Her mother said, to which her aunt and uncle nodded agreeingly. Only Maria didn't appear as high-strung. Perhaps because she was away at university during the darkest period in Carla's life. After Ruben left her to chase his dreams in England, Carla was left with no sense of direction whatsoever. The two days in bed she spent mourning João Mendes were nothing compared to the year she spent sobbing over Ruben Dias. Carla lost so much weight from not eating that her mother had to call a handful of her family members to keep an eye on her when they couldn't, hence her aunt and uncle's nervous demeanor.
"Mom, it's okay." Carla reassured. "I'm not gonna stay inside and hide from a person who is absolutely out of my life. I mean, unless Ruben shows up on our doorstep and...."
The door bell rang.
"It's him, it's Ruben!" Maria exclaimed, her head peeking through the window curtains.
"I'll go get it." Her uncle volunteered.
"No." Her mother said, her expression set. "I'll go get it."
"Mom. It's...."
"Carla." She raised her hand. "You owe that man nothing, not a damn word."
"But I..."
"Martin." Her mother said, calling for Carla's uncle."
"Yes, irmã?"
"Make sure Carla doesn't go anywhere near the door."
"Yes, ma'am."
Carla had no choice. She was held back, ushered upstairs to her room as her mother charged towards the door.
"What do you think he wants?" She asked her cousin.
"I dunno. Maybe he wants you back again."
Carla nodded. "Maybe."
There had been numerous attempts. Attempts where Ruben had called or texted her, without success. Carla didn't feel comfortable replying to her ex-boyfriend's message whilst in another relationship. She never even opened them, the messages. They got deleted right away, before João could see. God knows how he would react. He and Ruben weren't exactly friendly with each other growing up. João was actually quite awful towards Ruben, always giving him hell whenever he could. Nevertheless that was in the past, when Carla didn't know João, before the two of them reunited as adults. When Ruben was long gone, out of Carla's life for good.
Or so she thought
"Look! I think he's leaving."
Carla sighed. "Please get away from the window Maria. He might see you."
Just then Maria gasped and shut the curtains, pressing her back to the wall.
"What?" Carla left her bed, curious as to what had caused her cousin's reaction.
"I think he saw me. Quick, hide behind me."
"I will do no such thing." Carla frowned. She was not a victim. Ruben no longer had a hold of her heart. Not now, not ever.
During her brief moment of bravery, Carla reached out to remove the curtains, exposing herself through her bedroom window. She squinted her eyes as the sunlight hit her eyes and there he stood, as handsome as ever. "Ruben."
"What are you doing, get away from there." Her cousin snapped.
Carla couldn't move, however. She didn't want to move. "Ruben." She whispered.
His shoulders withered at the sight of her. He was taller than she remembered, much much taller. His expression wore no emotion, but then....a smile.
"What is he doing?" Maria asked, still out of sight, her back pressed to the wall.
"Nothing, he's just....standing there I guess." Carla didn't have the strange to diverge her eyes. They were left staring at a memory, an illusion, a dream. Her eyes were left staring at the man of her dreams.
"Great." Her cousin said. "You best get out of there before your mother...."
"Carla?"
There was a hard knock on her door. "Carla, open the door now!"
"Told you." Maria sighed.
Her mother, aunt and uncle were probably wondering why Ruben hadn't left their front yard yet. Or why he was staring up towards the second floor.
"I told you to get away from there." Maria said, Her back leaving the wall, on her way to open the bedroom door.
"Wait!" Carla exclaimed, to which her cousin's steps altered.
"Carla what are you..."
"Just wait." She said, reaching for her phone on the nightstand.
"Carla, don't."
It was too late, her mind was made up. Below her window Ruben stood watching, watching as Carla dialed the only number she had come to memorize as a child that wasn't her parents. A long shot. Ruben could have changed his a long time ago, nevertheless she let the phone ring and after two beats she watched him fumble for something in his pocket, his phone.
"Carla?"
His voice sparked through her ear like a familiar song, his deep voice melting her heart.
"What do you want?" She asked, her voice cold and distant.
"I....I wanted to talk to you." He said, watching her from below.
"There is nothing for us to talk about Ruben, now leave before my mother sends my uncle to chase you away."
Her mother was still banging on the bedroom door, a distant noise in Carla's ears. Nevertheless Maria was getting anxious for Carla to hang up the phone.
"I want to talk about our promise." Ruben said. A bit unexpected to Carla as he had never brought it up before, not even the last time that they bumped into each other on Christmas eve three years ago.
"Hello, Carla?" Ruben sounded anxious, anxious that she had hung up on him.
"Fine." She said, "Meet me at our spot, tonight."
"Okay."
"If you're late Ruben, trust me I'm leaving."
"I trust you." He said, and to Carla's frustration he was smiling up at her window. The same boyish smile he took forever to show her.
"That's it, I'm too grown to be punished by aunt Gloria." Maria rushed to open the door. Carla was quick to leave the window, returning to the bed. She sat with her hands in her lamp, anticipating her mother's wrath.
"If that man doesn't..." Carla's mother stumbled into the room, charging straight to the window. She looked puzzled. "Where did he go?" She spun around.
"Who?" Carla played dumb.
"What do you mean who, Ruben, of course. He was standing right...." Her mother paused, eyes searching her daughter's face. "Nevermind." She returned to the door, pausing in the frame. "I want you girls dressed and ready to come with us to the cemetery. We'll wait for nobody.
"Yes, mom. We will be ready." Carla assured.
"Good."
Maria waited for the door to shut before she spoke. "Carla, please don't tell me that you're not going to see Ruben tonight."
"I am."
"But why? Like aunt Gloria said, Ruben did you dirty and doesn't deserve a word from you."
"I get that. It's just something I have to do."
"And what is that exactly?"
"I have to end things. Once and for all I have to end things between me and Ruben."
And there was only one way to do it. Carla had to break her promise.

Ruben and Carla have grown apart. With Ruben's career taking off he leaves Portugal to live the life of his dreams, breaking Carla's heart doing so. Years later, upon his return home, Ruben learns that Carla has moved on, happily engaged to another man, but not any man, Ruben's childhood bully João Mendes.
Enjoy!
It was good to be back home. Although he loved Manchester, Ruben didn't feel like there was another place where he could truly relax like he did at home in Portugal. It's where he had his core, his family and friends.
"You must meet Santina, a lovely girl. You remember Santina, don't you Ruben?"
He had barely gotten to unpack his suitcase before his mother had him escort her to the market, introducing him to every girl she thought eligible to become his future wife.
"Mamãe." Ruben sighed. "I'm sure she's lovely,  but can we just let Simba poop and go home." Simba, the family Caniche, looked tempted to do her business underneath someone's fruit stand if Ruben didn't get him out of there soon.
"Fine." His mother said. "Just let me say hello to Gloria."
Ruben tagged along, with Simba trailing his steps. The Fernandez family owned a salon in town. For years it had been the only hair salon in Portugal that Ruben allowed to touch his hair. He was very picky as a child, some people even went on to call him sick. However, back then Ruben found it intimidating having strangers touch him. However, the Fernandez' were like family.
"Gloria!" Ruben's mother exclaimed, to which a woman carrying scissors turned around and frowned. "Bernadette?"
"Gloria! Long time no see. Look who I brought."
Ruben trailed into the salon behind his mother. There were only women occupying the chairs and if Ruben wasn't mistaken they were all looking at him with nothing but cheer disgust.
"Ruben?" Gloria said, her initial frown now a half hearted smile. "You're...here?"
"Olá senhora Fernandez." Ruben smiled. He smiled because she reminded him of her, of Carla. Her resemblance to her mother was impeccable.
"You're....here." She repeated.
"Isn't it lovely?" Ruben's mother budged in. "Ruben is preparing for his tournament with Portugal this summer and decided to surprise us."
"How...lovely." Senhora Fernandez mumbled, eyeing Ruben skeptically.
"How about you Gloria?"
"Me?" She frowned. Ruben's mother tended to get a little overexcited when he came to visit. It was a little embarrassing, he thought. But then again it was his mother who was simply proud of her son and what he had achieved with his life.
"Yes, you. I heard your sister was in town, are you having a little family gathering of your own?"
"Oh, yes. I guess you can say that."
"Really, does that mean Carla is back in town as well?"
Ruben stiffened besides his mother. Senhora Fernandez looked to have done the same. "Actually, no." She said, clearing her throat. "Carla couldn't make it this year."
"No? What a shame." His mother said. Even Ruben felt something falter within him. He hadn't seen Carla in years. He thought about her often though, sometimes too often. And he hadn't forgotten, he would never forget their promises to each other. When the time came, if the time came, he would ask her to be his wife. Ruben was certain that he would.
"But you know how it is." Senhora Fernandez said, still with the same serious demeanor. "Carla is very busy these days, with the planning of her wedding and all..."
"What?" Ruben exclaimed, or perhaps it was his mother.
"Little Carla is getting married? I had no idea." She gasped. "Shame on you Gloria, you never tell me anything these days."
Senhora Fernandez's eyes darted at Ruben who looked a bit lost for a moment.
"Did you hear that Ruben?" His mother said, nudging him back to life.
"Huh?"
"Little Carla is getting married. Oh how time flies. I remember when the two of you used to play around the house when we still lived on the south side, don't you remember Ruben, how you and Carla used to play?"
He remembers alright. How could he forget?
The first time Ruben met Carla Fernandez was in the fifth grade. His father had gotten a new job and Ruben and his family had just moved to town. Ruben and his brother Ivan were expected to start school right away and Ruben still recalled his brothers speech on their way there:
"Remember, if any of the kids give you trouble for being the new kid, just call on me and I'll take care of it."
"Take care of it, how?" Ruben wondered. However, back then his brother was known for never backing out of a fight. Ruben was the opposite and often stood by as his dad held his brother accountable for starting trouble at school.
"Don't worry about it Ruby." His brother said, tousling his hair and sending Ruben on his way.
Ruben hated school, mostly because at that age he had buck teeth and was terribly shy to show them off. Not speaking was the best way to hide them, so for a long period, before he got braces, Ruben withdrew to only speaking when spoken to. However, it was mostly the teachers that would ask him questions, other students ignored him completely, seemingly because they thought that he was strange, that is, until the day Ruben met Carla.
"I forgot my pen, can I have one of yours?"
"Huh?"
Ruben kept his head down for the majority of his classes, avoiding any kind of eye contact with his teachers and classmates. On this particular day however, a pat on his shoulder forced him to meet the eye of a bright eyed girl.
"I'll give it back to you, pinky swear." She had turned in her chair, waving her finger in Ruben's face.
"I don't.....I don't know what that means?" He stammered.
"You've never pinky sweared before?"
Heat rose to Ruben's face. "No." Even more heat scold his cheeks as Carla leaned forward, grabbing his hand. "Like this." She said and forced Ruben's left pinky to unfold. "My cousins says a pinky swear can't be broken, ever."
"Ever?"
"No. That means I'll give you your pen back right after class, deal?"
"Okay." Ruben grabbed a spare one out of his case, handing it over with trembling hands.
"Thanks Ruben." She said, to which he perked up. He was left staring at the back of Carla's head for the remainder of that class, as he could not take his eyes off of the only person at school who had called him by his name, smiling at him as if it was a joy speaking to him.
"Where are you going Dias?"
"Yeah, why in such a rush Dias?"
Ruben's brother was right about some boys wanting to give him trouble. Perhaps Ivan was aware of what a target Ruben was in the earlier stages of his life, when he did not have the courage to stand up for himself. On the same day he met Carla he was also introduced to the school bully João Mendez and his friends. They chased him on his way home, calling him names such as dysfunctional and mentally Ill. Luckily Ruben was fast and got away, however, he got home and did not know how to deal with his frustration other than to repeatedly kick a ball into the backyard fence. This Behavior worried his mother. Ruben's father, however, understood to let him be. It wasn't until later that the two of them thought of signing Ruben up for the local football team, until then there would be many afternoon's where he found himself in the pursuit of kicking down the backyard fence.
"Ruben, honey, there is someone at the door for you."
Except for being introduced to his middle school bully that day, Ruben had also been introduced to his best friend and later his first love. Out of sheer joy and surprise, his mother invited the girl from next door inside, and in Ruben's case it had been the first time someone had come over to seek him up.
"I couldn't find you at school." Carla smiled, a smile that mended all pain that he had locked up inside. "Here's your pen." She said, handing it over to him, keeping her promise. "We're neighbors." She added. "Perhaps we can walk together to school tomorrow?"
Ruben's lips were dry as he struggled to speak, he was terribly embarrassed and sweaty from kicking the ball against the fence. Luckily his mother came to the rescue.
"He would love that! You're such a sweet girl, so well mannered."
"Oh, thank you Senhora Dias." She waved. "I'll see you tomorrow Ruben."
Tomorrow, and the day after that, and the day after that. That day was truly the beginning of their story, The beginning of Carla and Ruben's love story.
"If you don't mind me asking...." Ruben's mother said, as the news of Carla's engagement certainly fueled her curiosity. Ruben however, was getting impatient. A need to escape Senhora Fernandez salon and kick a ball against something, anything.
"Ask away." Senhora Fernandez said, perhaps knowing exactly what questions his mother sought the answers to.
"Who is she marrying, little Carla I mean?"
Ruben didn't know whether to stay or run away, nevertheless his feet wouldn't budge as Senhora Fernandez carved a crooked smile, undoubtedly directed at him. "João Mendez." She said, the words like shattering glass to Ruben's ears.
"I see." His mother nodded. Ruben however, found no words to cope. He needed to see Carla and he needed to see her now.

Enjoy!
Carla fell back on her bed, letting the mattress catch her fall. It was bad enough that she turned up to the family reunion without her boyfriend. It was one of those reunions where the parents found pleasure in bragging about their children's life achievements. That's why Carla's mother may never forgive her for ending her long term relationship on the day her boyfriend proposed to her.
"Maybe it's not that bad." Carla's cousin Maria, said.
"My mother started crying when I told her."
"Oh."
It was true, but saying yes to marry João Mendes would mean deceiving her heart and Carla could never.
"But why did you say no?" Maria was a curious one. Carla felt the dip in her bed and understood that her cousin wouldn't leave her alone until she told her the truth.
"Because I promised to marry someone else."
"Who?"
Carla sighed. "You know who."
Maria's face faltered and for a split second she could be mistaken for Carla's mother. They both shared the same expression of pity, especially when it came to anything Ruben Dias related.
"He's not coming back, you know." Maria reached out to caress Carla's hair that lay spread across the bed. "He's an asshole who doesn't deserve you, Carla."
"Following his dreams doesn't make him an asshole."
"No, but breaking your heart does."
Carla shut her eyes to prevent the tears from resurfacing. They always did at the thought of him, at the thought of what she and Ruben had.
"Where did you guys even meet, high school?"
Carla shook her head. "We were already together by then. We met earlier than that, when Ruben and his family were still living across the street from us."
"That's right." Maria nodded. "I remember now. He had a brother, right, Ivan?"
"Yes, why?"
"I think I blew him off at a party once."
"You think?" Carla rolled onto her stomach, eyes darting at her cousin.
"I dunno, I was pretty drunk and the bathroom was very dark. It could have been anyone, even Ruben. He was at the party too."
Carla sat up. "But you think it was Ruben's brother, right?"
"Wait, which ones which?"
"What do you mean?"
"Which ones, which of the brothers? I remember one of them being annoying, chasing us around with garden snails and so on, but the other one.....he was pretty shy, no?"
"It was Ruben." Carla hid her smile. "Ruben was the shy one."
"Right, then I'm pretty sure I blew his brother off at the party, not him."
Thank God.
"Either way. I still don't understand how the two of you ended up together, or worse, ended up engaged without telling anyone?"
"It's a long story." Carla sighed. "It's long and irrelevant now. Ruben and I haven't spoken in years."
"But you still have feelings for him, don't you?"
"No." Carla's voice carried no depth. Her cousin saw through the lies.
"Oh, Carla." She was pulled into a hug that almost crushed her bones. "Bless you my hopeless romantic cousin."
Carla groaned. "I'm neither a romantic or hopeless."
"Oh, I know, I know. You keep telling yourself that until the next prince charming comes around."
Carla rolled her eyes but surrendered to her cousin's smothering embrace. It was comforting considering that she was basically going through a break up. However, a promise was a promise. Carla still wore the ring that Ruben gave her just not around her finger. She wore it around her wrist as it was attached to her charm bracelet. There it allowed her to keep her promise with some dignity, knowing Ruben had probably broken his end of the bargain a long time ago. Nevertheless, a promise was a promise, she would never marry until Ruben asked for the ring back. After all, it did belong to his great great grandmother.

Ruben and Carla have grown apart. With Rubens career taking off, he leaves Portugal to live the life of his dreams, breaking Carla's heart doing so. Years later, upon his return home, Ruben learns that Carla has moved on, happily engaged to another man, but not any man, Ruben's childhood bully João Mendez.
