Find a Rainbow Day may or may not be an official thing, but we will take any excuse to post rainbows from our collection. 🌈
From the top:
🌈 The Beauty of the Heavens (1842) by Charles Blunt
🌈 Thirty Plates of Natural Phenomena (1846)
🌈 Matabe land and the Victoria Falls (1881) by Frank Oates
🌈 Spectrum Analysis (1885) by Henry Roscoe
🌈 Atlas of the Munsell color system (1915) by A.H. Munsell
A few years ago, we held a small exhibit on color, Color in a New Light. With the addition of a co-curator, an expanded reworking of the exhibit will be on display at the @cooperhewitt as Saturated: The Allure and Science of Color, opening in May 2018.

Updated visalization of every Vaquita left on Earth
There are supposed to be 5000 of them. Now there are 30.
What has been done so far has not worked, including the ban on gill nets, and the capture effort that is coming will probably be far too late.
This is humanity’s fault.
China for pushing the market for totoaba swim bladders, Mexico for allowing it until this point, and the rest of us for not stepping up until they are at death’s door.
This species will most likely be gone in one or two years, and it will be the second cetacean species to die out in a little over ten years, the second in the entire 200 000 year history of the human species.

LOSING GLACIERS IN THE SOUTHERN ANDES
The world is getting warmer, the average global temperature on Earth has increased by about 0.8° C since 1880. Two-thirds of the warming has occurred since 1975, at a rate of roughly 0.15-0.20°C per decade.
If there is anything tangible that what happens is the retreat of glaciers in the world. The Andes are the longest continental mountain range in the world, are a continual range of highlands along the western coast of South America. Sadly, these ecosystems are not out of this phenomenon and recent photograph of the retreat of glacier in these highands are shocking.
- Upsala glacier in Argentina, in 1931 by Agostini and 2016 by Ventura
The project is Fabiano Ventura, mountain photographer, who leads the international project In the Footsteps of the Glaciers.
Glaciers are one of the best and most visible examples of climate change as they respond directly and exclusively to changes in temperature or the amount of snowfall. They basically act like a bank account and shrink if more ice is melted (withdrawal from your account) than is being replenished (deposit on your account) through snowfall. If temperature or snowfall amounts change.
- Ameghino glaciar, Argentina, in 1945 by Agostini and 2016 by Ventura
The project combines photographic comparisons and scientific research in order to analyze the effects of climate change on the largest glaciers on Earth.
Using references, Ventura recover old photographs by Salesian priest Alberto Maria De Agostini who recorded between 1910 and 1950 these glaciers in photographs that were preserved in the Museum of the Mountain of Turin and the Borgatello Museum in Punta Arenas, Chile. The challenge of Ventura is take these photographs at the same time and angle as Agostini did.
The next challenge is the Himalayas in 2018 and Alps in 2020, with the same objectives and methods.
Main photograph: Torres del Paine, Chile, by Agostini taken in the early XX century and Ventura in 2016.
