hnnnnn i know i won’t shut up about this but my god the core themes of fruits basket are placed so well throughout the show. like for example, uotani joins a girl gang because she was emotionally vulnerable and wanted to be in a situation where she could fall as far as she wanted. she grew comfortable. she could make mistakes and take her anger out on others because she already labeled herself as mean and tough. tohru and kyoko help her realize that although she could go ahead and write herself off as a troublemaker, she doesn’t have to. she has her whole life ahead of her to learn and grow and be kind. limiting yourself to the label you gave yourself when you were at your lowest doesn’t do anyone any good.
there’s a similar narrative with kyo and hanajima, they let their mistakes define them and continuously punish themselves for them. hanajima had basically given up on future happiness because she thought her mistake had tainted her forever. eventually she found a way to forgive herself too. kyo was willing to isolate himself until death because he thought he was an irredeemable monster. but the thing is. other people in their lives didn’t want that for them, it wasn’t helping anyone for them to give up on themselves.
this whole idea comes to a head with akito. basically the most extreme and clear examples of this idea. akito surrounded herself with labels to avoid acknowledging anything. she excused herself from moral rules because she was told they didn’t apply to her. she used this easy control she had over others as a shield from facing the truth. eventually though, the shield breaks. she realizes that these rules that she has been ignoring DO apply to her. when you’re in a situation where you’re clinging desperately to something like a lifeline, you don’t really pay attention to how your fingers are digging painfully into it. akito’s whole world has shattered and she does the easy thing to do, label herself as a bad person. but. tohru doesn’t let her. tohru rejects labels like that. which in a sense, allows akito to take accountability. akito is able to acknowledge her wrongdoings and correct them. she’s able to move on from the sohma curse as well. she can be more than what she was.

i don’t talk about this aspect of the series much but the portrayal of tohru’s grieving process is so poignant and heartbreaking. like i think it’s one of the things fruits basket did best.
i think that in grief it’s not that they died, because it’s hard to even comprehend that, it’s that they’re gone. Like something was once there and now it’s not. tohru keeps her mom with her at all times, with the picture, the lessons she’s been taught, the anecdotes.
i also think how she interacts with people regarding it is very accurate, she gets insecure in season 2 over discussing her mom too much, because she’s afraid she’s making the zodiac feel bad and making it all about her. i think this resonates with those who have lost people and don’t know how to interact with others over it. she doesn’t want to take away attention from others, but she doesn’t want to never talk about her mother.
and finally, tohru’s need to help isn’t just inherent kindness (the series has said kindness is a choice), while she is kind, she cannot bear more loss. it also allows her to not look inward and think about what she wants for herself, which is why it took her so long to realize her feelings for kyo. one of the most important plot lines and conflicts of the series still stems from the very beginning, because that is how much grief can color your life.
her allowing herself to live for herself, is a form of healing from all she’s been through. and i think her mom would be proud :,)

so as someone who spins a 6 foot pole for sport, i’d like to point something out:
the mages from dragon age rly do be whipping their staves around SO FAST
like i tried to spin my flag pole as quickly as they do, but the planes they’re cutting through and the pathways mean that it’s near impossible to move that quickly
so three possibilities exist:
1. the staves are really light (i’m ruling this one out bc we can see the materials they’re made of and given some of them are solid metal, they probably weigh more than my flag)
2. the magic is what makes the staves travel so fast (this could be entirely possible, BUT if casting spells is anything like spinning a flag, it would be dangerous to let the magic have too much control, that shit will fly out of your hands, trust me)
3. the mages are just really strong (we’ve all seen male mage hawke...)
