African Women Artists #16: Otobong Nkanga
Otobong Nkanga is a Nigerian artist who creates works based on extensive research in diverse media. Her drawings, installations, photographs, videos and sculptures examine ideas around land and the value connected to its resources.
She often utilises body and voice in order to articulate her own reactions to existing structures and their implications. She finds inspiration for this in observing social and topographic changes in her surroundings and the influences that arise from these. As a human trace that testifies of ways of living and environmental issues, architecture and landscape act as a sounding board for narration and “the performative”.
In many of her works Nkanga reflects metonymically on the use and cultural value of natural resources, exploring how meaning and function are relative within cultures and revealing different roles and histories for the same products, particularly within the context of the artist’s autobiography and memories. Alexia Webster is a freelance photographer born in Johannesburg and based in Cape Town, South Africa.
Artist Statement: Tired of a world where photos are so often taken but so rarely given, we created free outdoor photo studios on street corners around the country.
The images in this series are from five street studios that were set up in Hillbrow in Johannesburg, Woodstock, Blikkiesdorp, Du Noon and Cape Town city center. We invited passing families, individuals and groups of friends to pose at this temporary studio, and they received a free photograph on site to take home with them for their family album.

http://www.mrbongo.com/product/tumi-and-the-volume-cd-1153 The most unlikely combination to ever share a melody since free Mandela rallies: Tiago a guitarist with more hair than face, Dave the consciously inconspicuous Jewish bassist, Paulo the vigorous face contorting Mozambican drummer and Tumi a roly-poly twang festooned Muslim emcee. This ladies and gentlemen is Tumi and the Volume, arguably South Africa’s most electric performers. The group has managed to create a distinct musical accent for itself that includes blends of samba, swing, hip hop, reggae and poetry that speaks to the unique reality of the South African experience and still relates to the world in that universal way that only beauty can. Think The Roots meets Common by way of South Africa. The band has wowed audiences all over the country, impressed fellow musicians Blackalicious (U.S.A), Positive Black Souls (Senegal) and Relax (the Netherlands) and has been frequent invitees to world-class music festivals such as the Quart Festival in Norway, North Sea Jazz in Cape Town, Montreal Jazz. They have also played throughout Europe.

"Being a father is by far the hardest thing I ever did. I used to think it was hard being an artist. Forget it. It’s duck soup." —Danny Lyon
If you live in the NYC area and want to meet one of the greats in American photography, Danny Lyon will be on hand at Edwynn Houk gallery this Saturday the 11th for a reception with the artist honoring his latest show: Murals and Montages.
The exhibition opens earlier on the 9th and will feature for the first time thirteen large-scale, 30 x 40 inch gelatin silver prints produced from the original negatives and in conjunction with his master printer and fellow teacher, Chuck Kelton. The photographs will span Lyon’s 50+ year career and be an opportunity for collectors to purchase iconic images in a new size and edition.
My admiration for Danny Lyon’s work is infused with his mission for social justice and equity in society. His writings and personal history reveal this passion clearly. The man behind the viewfinder is more than just a bad-ass photographer, he’s “reaching out to others in the darkness.” —Lane Nevares
