Charyn Canyon Trip – The history of Charyn Canyon stretches back 12 million years, when the river started slowly eroding the stone around it. The oldest, darkest layers at the bottom of the canyons are volcanic lava rocks, on top of which debris slowly accumulated to form natural sculptures. Once upon a time, a vast forest of Sogdian ash trees covered the whole area. The forest did not survive the change to a drier climate, and now only relic populations of the prehistoric, thick-as-baobab Sogdian ashes are left. Lizards, snakes, steppe hares, foxes and especially groundhogs thrive here. There is also a renegade camel that calls Charyn home. The Charyn river is also home to an endemic fish called the naked osman. After crossing the endless, wide-open plains outside of Almaty, the canyon comes as a surprise. Seemingly out of nowhere, the landscape gets a third dimension. For a million years, wind and water sculpted Charyn’s red sandstone to form today’s fantastical shapes and shadows. Come here if you are not easily awed. Geologically, the Issyk Lake was formed 8000 years ago as a result of a powerful rock avalanche, which later created a natural 300 m-high dam. Today, the lake is restored, but its size is twice smaller than the previous one. The lake territory is very suitable for lovers of active mountain tourism, and everybody who wants to have a picnic in the weekends. The first can make a fascinating trek to the beautiful cliffs, named “the Kremlin walls”, while the latter may camp on the lakeside, enjoying the beauty, which opens before their eyes, and breathing the fresh mountain air. This place is also interesting for history lovers: there, you can visit Issyk barrow of the IV-V centuries BC and the place where a Saka warrior, dressed in armor and gold clothing was found. This warrior became a symbol of Kazakhstan. It will be also very interesting to visit an ostrich farm found near the lake, to take pictures with these birds, exotic for the region, as well as have food cooked from ostrich meat and eggs. Ak-Bulak Mountain Resort Hotel is a ski resort ideal for family, couple retreats and corporate events. Sports and leisure are combined in the resort. It means bewitching natural landscapes, elite recreation, 4.800 m tramway, skiing slopes of 7.000 meters long, snowboarding, ice skating arena, sports fields, snowmobiles and more activity for everyone. A 1-hour drive away from the center of Almaty, Ak-Bulak is a little gem of a resort. Despite it being lower than Shymbulak (though it’s cheaper than Shymbulak), and with fewer and older lifts (only two main chair lifts), the terrain is arguably more interesting. Definitely steeper, especially at the top; more gullies and trees to play around in; definitely fewer rocky and more grassy slopes; despite the very one-dimensionalness (thin strip up a valley) skiers can traverse across into a couple of other side valleys. With majestic Peak Talgar looming over the slopes, the views from the top can be spectacular on a sunny day. And with 1000m of vertical to boot (more than its neighbouring resort) this place has to be up there as one of Central Asia’s best snow playgrounds. Extra bonus: there is almost no one around during the week (weekends can get somewhat crowded). Ak Bulak is a good place for beginners. There is a long, calm, gradual descent for practice and teaching.
