Today we celebrate the Holy Myrrhbearer and Equal to the Apostles, Mary Magdalene. Saint Mary Magdalene was a fervent disciple of Christ, from the beginning of His ministry, all the way up until His Crucifixion and Burial. With her own eyes, she saw the Lord die and be buried, and was the first to see Him resurrected. After the Ascension, she travelled all around the Roman Empire, even to parts of France and Africa, spending most of her time in Rome, where she announced to the Roman Emperor himself, Tiberius Caesar, the good tidings of the Resurrection and greeted him with the words “Christ is risen!” while presenting him with a red egg. This tradition has been passed down to us even today. She ended her earthly life in Ephesus of Asia Minor with the Apostle John the Theologian. Today we celebrate the Holy Great Martyr Christina of Tyre. Saint Christina was born to pagan parents where she grew up praying to false idols. One day, thinking about the stars, the sun, the sky and all beautiful things on earth, she began to wonder Who created it all. She decided that the idols themselves could not have done so as they were created themselves by human hands. In deep prayer, she begged the Creator to reveal Himself to her. An angel soon appeared preaching to her the Gospel of Christ, calling her a to her glorious martyrdom. She thus accepted the true faith and shattered all the false idols in the temple. Her father, outraged at this, had her beaten and thrown in prison. During these tortures, Saint Christina’s father died and another governor took his place in torturing the Saint. He had her tied to an iron wheel where she was burned over a fire, she was tied to a heavy rock and thrown in the ocean, as well as many other tortures which she survived through the grace of God. At night, Christ Himself would come to heal her wounds. Fed up with the apparent “sorcery” of the Saint, the governor threw her in prison once again where she was soon beheaded.
