American Merchant Mariners’ Memorial
For those with an interest in war, you will find the American Merchant Mariner's Memorial worth the visit at Battery Park.
It's only after reading up on it that I relooked at the photograph I had so randomly clicked then. And it makes for a sad one.
Sculpted by Marisol Escobar, and modelled on an actual photograph, it depicts three US Navy sailors on a sinking ship. While one of them anxiously peers into the horizon, another one screams for help. However, look closely at the third figure and that is when it strikes you. He's desperately trying to grip the hand of the fourth sailor who's in the water.
Adding a sense of doom to this memorial is that, twice a day, during high tide, the man in the water is completely submerged, except for that extended hand.

From the sea to the sky
Chances are, if you are driving from Vancouver to Whistler, then you will find yourself cruising on the Sea-to-Sky corridor, or British Columbia Highway 99 (BC 99). While the two points are roughly about 120km apart, it has some of the most awe-inspiring scenery I’ve seen so far.
A drive that would ordinarily take about an hour and a half, takes that much longer. With landscape as beautiful as this, it is hard not to make a few pit-stops on the journey – from lakes and waterfalls to mountains.
One of the reasons why it's called the Sea-to-Sky corridor is because you have the sea on one side and the mountains on the other. It could also be because it takes you from the waters of Vancouver to the mountains and clear skies of Whistler.
Interestingly, BC Highway 99 that goes all the way to the US border, gets its number from the US Route 99 which doesn’t exist anymore.

People watching
"I know what boys like
I know what guys want
I know what boys like
I've got what boys like"
           The Waitresses
On a wet evening, a few summers ago, a brief shower had me scampering for shelter on one of the streets in Downtown Manhattan.
Once safely protected from the elements, it gave me ample time to soak in the atmosphere and do what I like to do - people watch.
As people scurried to wherever they had to get to, there was this one guy who obviously liked what he saw.
As he went by her, he turned around one more time.
Just confirming.
I guess.

S-21
"We want information, information, information
Who are you?
The new number 2
Who is number 1?
You are number 6
I am not a number, I am a free man!"
------------------------------- Iron Maiden
If you didn’t know what you were seeing, you would think Chao Ponhea Yat High School is just another regular school. Once you enter the gates, it is like any other school, with five buildings overlooking the well-maintained lawns.
However, between 1976 and 1979, the Khmer Rouge, who had overrun Phnom Penh had named it S-21, or Security Prison 21.
They immediately set about converting it into a prison to hold their inmates, an estimated 20,000 of them including men, women, children and infants. The adults and children were photographed and then interrogated and tortured until they ‘confessed’.
Though that number is disputable, it is worthwhile to say that there are only twelve accounted former prisoners who survived. As for the rest, once their interrogators had done with them, they were trucked to Choeung Ek, the most famous of the killing fields, to be finally executed.
It is now called Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and serves as a memorial for the thousands who passed through its door, never to see freedom again. While the Khmer Rouge regime lasted just four short years, its legacy continues to haunt a generation of Cambodians.

Arabian fantasies
Whether you like it or not, in a mood to bargain over a souvenir or just do a bit of window shopping, claustrophobic or comfortable in a crowd, a visit to a souk is an absolute must.
It's the same when it comes to Muscat, Oman. And one of the best places to experience it is in Muttrah Souk. It's also called Al Dhalam by the locals, which translates to Market of Darkness. That's because there's no natural light that comes through.
For a first time visitor, it can feel like a sensory overdose. It feels like you've stepped back in time, or are simply reliving one of the Arabian Nights stories, in bright technicolour.
Each narrow alley has shops stacked with frankincense, khanjars, handicrafts, clothing, jewellery and a variety of other exotic items. Even glittery two-piece dresses that you'd mostly see in a fantasy movie, or your fantasies. Yup, it's one of the few markets in the world where you get it all, under one roof.
More than 200 years old, the souk used to be frequented by Omanis who would come to buy their household items, from clothing and kitchenware, to perfumes and gold. However, today while there are still Omani families who visit, especially after evening prayers or on weekends, the souk mostly caters to the tourists who come by the busloads.
The corniche also happens to be a favourite place for the many number of migrants to hang around with their friends.

Battery Park City
When it comes to parks in NYC, most visitors have Central Park in mind. And that's where they'll head.
However, a short subway ride to downtown Manhattan brings you to another world that's far removed from the 'glamour' of Central Park.
Battery Park City is far removed from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the city. In fact, if you're too lazy to take the ferry to say hello to the Statue of Liberty, understand what Ellis Island is all about or even discover New Jersey just across the Hudson River, no issues.
The Esplanade at Battery Park City offers you stunning panoramic views of all three on a clear day.
Over a mile long, this is the perfect place to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the city, while enjoying a quiet walk.
And if you do feel like venturing just a little bit, why not hop onto the ferry to Staten Island. The terminal is a short walk away. Even better, your journey is free.

Bremen Town Musicians
What do perestroika, the Brothers Grimm and this statue have in common? Depends.
Just outside Riga's over 800-year old monument, St Peter's Church, is a statue that is sure to stop you in your tracks.
It's based on one of many fairy tales from the brothers. The donkey, dog, cat and rooster, well past their prime and yearning for freedom, decide to head to Bremen to become musicians. After finding a cottage that they would love to call home, they realise that its inhabitants are robbers. To get rid of them, the animals stand on each other's back and raise such a ruckus that the robbers make haste.
However, this sculpture, created by Krista Baumgaertel has a slightly different twist to the original tale. It was, after all, created in 1990, a year before gaining independence from the Soviet Union. It was the time of Gorbachev, and his restructuring programme was already redrawing borders and creating new countries.
In this sculpture, the animals aren't trying to scare away the robbers. Instead, they are peering through the Iron Curtain, to a new world of freedom and possibilities.
In case you are wondering what Bremen has to do with Riga, it's also because they are considered as twin cities.

Picture perfect
If there are two things you have to see when you're in Galle, the first should be a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Galle Fort.
Built in 1588, this site is the main reason tourists and locals flock to this place.
Within the fort is the lighthouse, located close to the southern walls of the fort, and overlooking the harbour.
While it's been guiding ships to the safety of the harbour since 1848, today, it's also got a secondary role, as the perfect prop for your Instagram snaps, complete with palm trees for that picture perfect shot.
And don't worry, so long as you're able to bear the heat, a half or full day will do ample justice to this fabulous and scenic place in the city.
The second, of course, is to watch a cricket test match at the iconic Galle International Stadium, just like the locals - from the grassy lawns of the fort.

Conversations over pink tea
Driving through Ladakh requires certain skills, none of which I have.
Thankfully, we had a driver through our stay.
Turns out, sitting next to the driver can be both a blessing and a nerve-wracking experience.
A blessing because you get a panoramic view of the landscape ahead and on the sides. Nerve-wracking because each time we had to pass traffic on the narrow roads along the mountainous rough roads, I had my heart in my mouth, never sure if one slight turn would take us down the ravines.
Since we were all going to entrust our lives in the hands of the driver, it made sense to start off on a positive note and build a warm relationship. And nothing works better than sharing a few smokes together on the journey, along with the odd chai at any of the highway restaurants.
It worked. On the last evening, after we had seen and done what needed to be seen and done and dropped everyone at their respective hotels, the driver invited me for a cup of tea at a small local tea shop somewhere in Leh.
Eager as ever for a kadak chai, what I didn't expect was to be treated to a glass of Kashmiri style noon chai.
Also called pink tea, it's distinct to this region, and gets its colour thanks to a pinch of baking soda that is added to it.
If I was expecting a slight sugar buzz, what I instead got was a salty aftertaste. It wasn't what I was expecting, and is definitely an acquired taste.
But chai is chai, no. ☕

A bird's eye view
When travelling between cities, and if you have a limited number of days devoted to each of them, then there is nothing like visiting small cities.
The Baltic States come to mind immediately. Each of these capital cities is doable in a day or two, leaving you with ample time to chill and take it easy, or simply soak in the atmosphere at a favourite watering hole or diner, which I am sure you will figure out quickly.
So, one fine afternoon a few years ago, after journeying from Riga to Tallinn by bus, checking into our hotel and freshening up, we decided to venture and see what this city has to offer us. Nevermind the squally weather.
It didn't disappoint. Walking from the Old Town up Toompea Hill, we chanced upon Patkuli viewing platform that sits on a limestone cliff. Turns out it offers the best views of this fabulous city, including the Town wall and towers, St Olav's church in the foreground, with the Gulf of Finland and the port in the background.
Walking down was a fairly simple affair. You can walk down a winding steps, all of 157 of them, that lead to Nunne street and Shnelli park below.
By the way, don't bother asking those seagulls for direction. They've got their mind on other fishy matters.

Bridge over troubled water
Huong river, or Perfume River as it is popularly known as, runs through the city of Hue.
Chances are that you will be staying on the side of the river that is closer to the main city. The only way to get to the Imperial City or even Thien Mu Pagoda, or the Pagoda of the Celestial Lady, is to cross the Perfume river.
Connecting these two sides of Hue is the iconic Truong Tien Bridge. Built in 1899, it has, much like the rest of the city and Vietnam, been witness to and survived a natural calamity and two wars.
Weather permitting, walking across this bridge is the best way to get a sense of river and city that were once the centre of Vietnamese power.

Kullad chai
How I found myself in Varanasi in 1990 is another story. However, one of the best memories I have of my first visit to the city was an introduction to kullad chai, which we sipped outside the gates of BHU, every time curfew was lifted. It's actually just a plain clay cup, but am not sure if it was the juvenile in me. I took an absolute delight in smashing the cup after I was done. It also helped brighten up the moment.
So, when I visited last year, I couldn't help but stop over at a chai shop in one of the bylanes along the way to the ghats.
While they serve it in paper cups now, ask and you shall be served in clay cups too. Sadly, I couldn't delight in smashing it after I was done this time round.
Hopefully, I'll get to sip on lots more kullad chai and smash those cups, when I go back early next year.
Happy Diwali to you lovely folks out there, in whichever part of this beautiful world wanderlust has you right now. 🙏

The Haas House
How do you seamlessly unite the past with the present? Or the historical with the modern? And still not rub purists the wrong way.
I'm sure that would have crossed Hans Hollien's mind, when he went about designing this masterpiece in 1987.
Walking through the historical part of Stephansplatz, you can't help but notice the Haas Haus building, or Haas House. It's in stark contrast to the other buildings in its surroundings, including Vienna's oldest architectural masterpieces - St Stephen's cathedral, which is bang opposite this building.
In fact, depending on where you're standing, you can actually get to see various contours of the cathedral reflected on the mirror facade.
Originally meant to be a shopping mall, Haas Haus today functions as a hotel, restaurant, café and offices.

Shadows under the clouds
How often do you see a photograph of a place and think you're looking at a painting so life-like, it just doesn't feel real.
And then you see a Hindi movie and try and convince yourself that it can't be real, but just an elaborate film set.
As the 4x4 descended from Chang La, the condition of the roads started to improve, and so did the landscape - from barren terrain to green fields with streams flowing. Then, after driving between mountains for a while, you suddenly spot a stretch of blue.
That's when you know it's not a painting. It's not reel. It's all real.
At about 14,270 feet, and roughly around 150 odd km from Leh, lies one of the most picturesque natural creations I've seen so far - Pangong Tso lake.
Depending on the sunlight and depth, the clear waters shine in various shades of blue.
Two-thirds of the lake falls in Tibet, which makes it the Chinese international border, while the remaining one-third is in Indian territory.
Strange fact. Even though it's among the highest brackish water lakes in the world, it completely freezes in winter.

Travelling to a new city can be unnerving, at times. Especially when you're not on a package tour, which I'm glad about.
Getting your bearings can take a bit of time. And when it gets too much to handle, I choose to walk into the nearest restaurant, pub or bar. Nothing beats that to help you collect your thoughts.
That's what we did when we landed in Vienna. Outside Alser Strasse Station, as we tried to figure out how to reach our destination, something I'm notoriously pathetic with sometimes, we stumbled upon this bar and restaurant on the corner of the street, just across.
Centimetre VII looked and felt comfortable, with its relaxed ambience. Which is normally a good sign.
However, what caught my eye was the quirky signage through the restaurant. It's like an homage to…  the centimetre.
It didn't come across as expensive, and they had a delicious selection of food. Depending on what you ordered, they were very generous with the portions.
However, for me, the icing on the cake was the most friendly bartender. He was chatty, and helped us get our bearings. And answered a million of our useless questions. I just hope he wasn't muttering, 'damn tourists' half the time.
Now, if all bars and bartenders were like this.
How's your weekend coming along, lovely people?
Cheers! 🍻

Underground art
The metro network is among the first things that I try and figure out when heading to a new city.
Bucharest didn't disappoint. After checking in at the hotel, and collecting a map of Bucharest, it was off to the closest metro station - Izvor, to discover all that the city had to offer.
When the authorities were building the metro system in the late 70s, the idea was to help transport the thousands of workers to factories that were mostly located on the outskirts of the city.
It may be an eyesore for the locals who use it to travel everyday. However, as a tourist in a new city, it was fascinating for me to see that some of their older trains were covered in graffiti. It also made for an interesting photograph and did brighten up the moment, especially when you consider that the stations are dimly lit.
The last time I saw so much graffiti on trains was on the New York subways, in magazines and movies.
There's an interesting story that revolves around Izvor station. When it was being built, President Ceauşescu gave orders that it should be connected to the Palace of the Parliament via an interconnecting train tunnel.
Unfortunately, I never got a chance to verify whether it is true or not.

Beauty's in the eyes of the beholder
When you're travelling to a new place, there's as much sightseeing you want to do in a day. At some point, you'd give those tired legs of yours a break and park yourself somewhere. It has its perks, believe me.
Yup, discovering and savouring the local brew is one of those perks, and joys of travelling. Chilled or at room temperature. In a mug or straight from the bottle. At a roadside joint, a local pub, or an outdoor café… it doesn't matter.
It's a chance to mingle with the crowd, and do as they do. Sit back, stretch those weary legs and watch as life goes by. And appreciate what you have in front of you. Truly.
