Time for a tune-up
Tumblr media
A friend of mine had been talking about upgrading for a while. We talked back and fourth about how to go about it, and if it would make sense to buy all new hardware with the budget he had. As it happened, another of my friends was selling an EVGA 980TI that matched the pricepoint well. I put the two into contact, and we started browsing for what else to do with the old rig.
His original rig had an z87-A motherboard, i5-4670k and a MSI GTX 760, and with the upgrade to the 980ti, I advised him to see if the cpu wouldn’t last a bit longer before he swapped it. We agreed to get a larger cooler for it, and give it a slight overclock. Seeing as he did not have unlimited funds, we chose to just get a new case, gpu and cooler, and then revisit the build when his budget increases.
Tumblr media
In the process of building the pc, we had totally neglected to take any photos of the old rig, which means this is the closest thing to the original we could find. The picture was taken when he received the 980ti in the mail.
Tumblr media
We started by disassembeling the old rig, finding out what parts we needed to re-use and which didn’t need to be brought over.
Tumblr media
Through the time I have been building PCs for friends and family, I have encountered a lot of different cases in very varying quality and price points, and one of the things i have found is that even the most low-budget Phanteks cases, actually have a very high degree of bonus utility to them.
Tumblr media
Things like velcro straps for cable management is a blessing, and really should be included in a lot more low and mid-tier cases.
Tumblr media
We ended up mounting the new H100i v2 in the front, which was very easy thanks to the very long tubes. We initially left in the old MSI 760 in order to do a bit of benchmarking and to see what improvements we could get out of
Tumblr media
After testing the old hardware, we started assembling the rest of the case and LED stuff.
Tumblr media
We finished our testing and benchmarking around 4 in the morning, but it was a lot of fun.
Tumblr media
Some time in the future, he is planning to get new motherboard, cpu and ram, so at that time we will revisit the build, but for now, I think it’s a pretty good looking rig.
All in all, I’m super satisfied with how it ended up. It’s a very nice example of how desktop PCs can keep changing during their lifetime. I’m looking forward to revisiting the rig in the future.

From the archives - LED
One of my schoolmates wanted a hand building his rig a while back.  From the start he wanted a pretty clean looking build, with some adjustable RGB lighting, and later he ended up adding even more to the mix.
youtube
The build consisted of the following parts:
Phanteks Eclipse P400S
Intel Core i5-6600K
Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
Gigabyte GTX 970
HyperX Fury 2*8gb
Corsair CX650W
Samsung 850 Evo 250gb
Corsair i80 v2
This was my first time building in the P400S case, but it has surely not been my last. My encounters with both the Enthoo Pro, Evolv and now the Eclipse has assured me of the premium quality of these cases. It’s the little things, like good cable routing and cable management straps that give it that little extra. Indeed a pleasure to work with.

I forgot to get my camera out in time, so these pictures will have to do. ):

I actually really like the thick look of these single slot AIO coolers. Short and chubby. ;P

A couple of weeks later he had gotten a couple of LED strips, which you can see the result of in the top of the post.
A very fun build, with less focus on having the highest performance, and a bit more focus on aesthetics and bling-factor. I would not mind doing more of this in the future. (:

From the archives- Gpu envy
I have been wanting to update this for the longest time. Now that i have finished my studies, and in the middle of my jobsearch, i finally feel like i have the time to do some of that stuff. The next couple of posts will most likely be from the archives, me trying to catch up with all the pictures, posts and benchmarks i have been doing and not posting.
I was approached by a guildmate, who wanted to treat himself to something nice. The result was the following:
Tumblr media
Fractal Design Define R5
Asus z170 Maximus VIII Hero
Intel Core i7-6700K
Asus GTX 1080
Kingston HyperX Predator 2*8gb
Corsair RM750x
Samsung 850 EVO 2*250gb raid0
Seagate 2tb SSHD
Corsair H110i AIO cooler
Tumblr media
This was not my first time inside the Define R5, but i was faced with a couple of challenges i had not forseen. I had read the case was compatible with the very large H110i watercooler, but as it turned out, i actually ran into trouble fitting it and the optical drive cage at the same time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What i had not foreseen was that it was the H110i and motherboard that would have trouble.
Tumblr media
As it turns out, the Maximus VIII motherboard has a shroud around the I/O which meant i had to mount the watercooler further from the backboard. This meant i had to remove the optical drivecage and upper disk drive cage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all a fun build to do, with some interesting problems to run in to. Benchmarking and overclocking was very fun to run, and i was absolutely blown away by the performance the GTX1080 can crank out.
My plan for the near future is to make a couple more of these from these posts from my archives, some posts on some of the different benchmarks i have done lately, and a post on the evolution of my own rig through the time.
Thanks for reading, and hope you tag along for the next couple. :b

Kinda late buildlog..
A couple of months ago, two of my friends asked me to build desktops for them. They had just about the same price-point, and wanted an optimal gaming rig backbone, and later to buy graphics cards and have an optimal gaming grade PC.
Both builds were intel based, with Haswell core i5-4690k unlocked processors and Asus motherboards to go with them. One of the guys opted for a larger Cpu cooler, in order to overclock out of the box, where the other wanted to run at stock speed until his budget was high enough to upgrade. One had also borrowed an old Gtx 290 from a friend, so he could do some gaming as soon as the PC was put together.
Fractal Design Define R4 Case
Intel i5-4690k Processor
Asus Z97-K Motherboard
Kingston HyperX Fury 2*8gb Ram
Corsair VS650 Power supply
Samsung 840 EVO 120gb Ssd
WD Green 2tb Hard disk
A couple of pictures from the first guy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I seriously love the stormtrooper-esque look of the new HyperX Fury ram. <3
Tumblr media
A couple of days later, i built for the other guy. A pretty bare bones pc, but as soon as he gets himself a cooler and a graphics card, it's gonna be a kick-ass gaming rig.

College friend's PC pt.2
He let me do a quick benchmark of the SSD raid after a little bit of use, and i was impressed to say the least!
I've never tested Raid0 on SSDs before, and i had no idea of how bad the diminishing returns would be.. as it turns out: not so bad.
Tumblr media
All in all i'd say that i'm very pleased with the over-all performance of the two Samsung 840 EVO SSDs.

College friend's PC
So, a couple of weeks ago, i met an old college buddy at the grocery store. We started talking, and he eventually told me that he was looking to buy a high-end gaming laptop. I told him that i would choose to spend my money on a small laptop, and a gaming desktop instead, and that if he wanted, i could build one for him. After a while he contacted me, and told me that he wanted me to build his pc. He gave me a budget and i began building.
This is the outcome:
Fractal Design Define R4 Case
Asus Maximus VII Hero Z97 Motherboard
Intel I7-4770k Processor auto overclocked to 4.6ghz
Asus Geforce Gtx 780 TI OC Graphics card
2 Kingston HyperX Beast DDR3-2400 8Gb Ram sticks
Corsair Hydro H100i Closed-loop Water cooler
Corsair RM850 Modular Power Supply
2 Samsung 840 EVO 250gb ssd in raid0
2 extra Fractal Design Silent Series R2 Case fans
Seagate 2tb SSHD Hybrid drive
2 WD Green 2tb Drives (he had lying around)
Samsung Dvd/Rw Optical drive

All in all i think it’s a great looking pc with epic performance and space for expansion in the future.
I’m really happy with the outcome, and i hope you enjoy it as well.
