Kotlc characters at the pool
Sophie is horrible at swimming. Her parents tried to teach her for years but it didn't help. She was just reading at a corner table and staring at the fish in a pond until Keefe bothered her so much she forgot what she was reading. Then she just put the book down and talked to Keefe. It felt really nice when some girls staring at Keefe sent glares her way. He decided to teach her how to swim, and because he had her laughing so much, she forgot she was trying to swim. Sophie can now float.
Fitz was just chilling in the hot tub until Keefe said his abs were better. They made a challenge called "The Best Guy" where they asked every girl they found who had better abs. They got an exact 50/50 tie. They didn't know it was because Biana paid each girl to say certain answers. She also had Sophie as a backup in case another girl came in. The boys had no idea.
Biana looks like the girl who just tans the whole time, but she's not. She has her hair up in an elaborate hairstyle so it doesn't mess up, but she doesn't even wear makeup. She will cannonball and shove people in the pool all the time. She also made up her entire plan about the abs with Dex, who was still mad that Keefe dyed his hair blond.
Keefe was wadding around in the pool, too scared to get his hair wet. Then he went to bother Sophie until she finally talked to him. When he was trying to teach her to swim, she splashed his hair, and it was ON. They splashed each other and jumped around and had a really good time. Every person in the friend group had a conversation about how single they feel around Sophie and Keefe at some point.
Dex is prepping blackmail for the next day. When Biana came to him, he was ecstatic. In his opinion, 'no one wants to look like Keefe'. Blond hair only looked decent on people who weren't Keefe. He jumped in the pool a bunch with Biana. They both refused to go in the hot tub because they couldn't jump in it. Also, he's an excellent swimmer. He had a swimming challenge with Biana and he creamed her.
Tam doesn't mind the water; he grew up with it. He just floats the whole time. Other than when Biana and Dex would cannonball near him and he would have to swim away. One time Biana landed on him and they crashed to the bottom of the pool. Dex had to get out of the pool because he was laughing so hard.
Linh loves it. She's moving the water around for little kids and jumping into the water and was the last to leave the pool. Marella - who doesn't like to get wet - hated how many times she got splashed.
Marella doesn't like getting wet. She just lays on the tanning chair and snacks on chips while talking to Linh. Linh splashed her a lot and she threatened to commit arson on the building. She chatted with Stina a lot, too, but Maruca spent most of the time pissing off Wylie before they came over.
Wylie was so done. He was trying to chill with a friend his age that he brought but it was impossible with Linh splashing him and Maruca being annoying. Eventually he just jumped in the pool and hung out with Linh and they just kinda chilled other than the occasional splashing. At the very end, he joined his friend in the hot tub and mad efun of him/ pos
Maruca had a plan - annoy Wylie at all costs. It worked out pretty well. Once he jumped in the pool she started flirting with his friend to piss off Wylie more. The friend just kinda stared at her and slowly walked away. She told Marella and Stina right in front of Wylie and he was snorting laughing. She hung out with them at the end.
Stina was having a nice conversation with Marella and stealing her snacks - mainly chocolate. It was pretty chill for her. She sat with her legs in the pool.
Jensi decided to come with them. He was a bit uncomfortable until Biana and Dex invited him to jump with them. He didn't know how to swim, so they helped show him. He was a LOT easier to teach than Sophie, so soon he was able to jump around and hang with them.
Rayni hung out with Tam for a while, which was why Linh wasn't with him. She eventually left the pool for the hot tub when Fitz left. She ended up talking to Wylie’s friend, who was traumatized by Maruca's purposefully bad flirting. They ended up having a decent conversation because he didn't know who she was. When Wylie joined, they had a nice convo. They weren't friends, but he didn't hate her, and that was nice.

I haven’t been on here in forever (I’m planning to be more on social media once I finish up with a few projects I’m working on) but just thought I’d pop on here and tell the kotlc fandom that today is the 2 year anniversary of me finishing book 1 my first time reading the series! Lots of you read it so much longer ago than that, but this feels like ages to me. Little did I know what I was getting into…

Every so often I remember people genuinely believe Sophie would change her name to Sophie Sencen and I am screaming sobbing throwing up. Shaking the Sophie Sencen truthers violently. You can ship sokeefe if you want, I see the appeal, but you clearly don't understand anything about their relationship if you think Keefe would keep his last name and Sophie would change hers to Sencen, of all things. Blatant misinterpretation of their relationship. I am putting sokeefe on the high shelf until yall stop butchering their relationship like that.

I don't want to start any discourse or imply that people aren't allowed to express their frustrations, but I do want to say that i believe
supporting artists means letting them make art the way they want to do it, on their timeline
and
two years is an impressively fast timeline to write a book on, without that book being epic fantasy with complex plot threads, and without being a mother to young children

heyy- I'm curious abt which headcanons do you have abt what would happen if Juline got hurt very badly / died and how would the rest of characters react. (sorry if it sounds dark D:)
*deep inhale* oh anon i don’t think you realized what you just signed up for. also NOTHING is too dark for me when it comes to fic ideas
i have spent years thinking about what would happen if Juline was taken prisoner by the Neverseen, and when i remembered that the collective had that mind wipe poison i just made it angster.
Kesler would shut down when she was captured going completely on autopilot because that way he didn’t have to think to feel to process what had happened
that the person who was apart of his life since he was teen, his best friend was gone he would have a planting for her because that’s what he was told to do, he just told himself that she was dead because if he didn’t all he would think about is the ways they where torturing her.
that didn’t change the fact that he kept expecting to wake up and find Juline laying beside him, and he could hold her and know that she was safe but she was never there,
Dex would stay up day after day refusing to believe that she was gone, insisting that he could find her. he would stay so long that he would start to hallucinate.
because if he stopped working for even a moment his mind would run wild, thinking of every possible way the Neverseen was hurting her. and he couldn’t take it,
Lovise would have to force him to go bed and even Tinker would send him home when they where searching for her and he was falling asleep at his desk. Tinker eventually just made him a spot in the corner of her workspace so she could put him there to sleep when he would black out.
he wouldn’t be focusing at school or at team valiant meetings, he would be angry and sassing everyone if they tried to speak to him. he blamed himself for what happened to his mom weather he was there or not
and more importantly that was his mom, and weather they where fighting or not, and he didn’t know how to live without her
and the triplets Lex wouldn’t fully understand she was gone, he would be checking at the widows, mistaking Edaline for Juline everytime she comes over before becoming crushed and looking out the window for Juline again,
Dex came back why wouldn’t she?
Bex doesn’t speak she barely makes a noise and just follows Dex around like a shadow, “helping” him with his search for their mom,
Rex wouldn’t leave his dad side because what if he goes missing too, what if he losing another parent,
they had already lost their brother once and got him back and now they lost their mom, and they don’t know if she’s going to come back
Edaline would lock herself away at first crying so hard she couldn’t breathe, or completely catatonic, she wouldn’t want to speak to anyone other than Grady because her little sister is gone,
she’s lost her daughter, almost lost her second daughter and now lost her sister,
one of the days Dex comes over with Sophie rambling in techospeak, about how he’s going to find Juline, Edaline comes downstairs to watch them work not wanting to be in bed any longer
Dex when he sees her and freezes for a moment, almost like he thinks that Edaline is his mom just for a moment,
she runs over and hugs him and they are both crying and Edaline decides right then and there that they she’s going to go over to Rimeshire and be with her sister’s kids
because that’s what Juline would have wanted, Edaline helps run slurps and burps as often as she can, so Kesler doesn’t have to deal with the cruel whispers
Grady would be angry, at everything, not understanding why his family can’t catch a break? why must they lose everything? why are they not allowed to be happy?
he goes over to Rimeshire to be with Kesler, not wanting him to suffer alone, he lets Dex yell about the Neverseen and how they can’t leave their family alone, he makes sure the triplets are ok while their father is on autopilot.
he would be the one to go with Sophie to check on the councils search and the black swans, because he’s been through it before twice, and he’s going to be the strong one and he’s not going to cry

Thinking about the parallels between Lord Cassius and Alden . . . .
Okay, so both of them are elves of nobility. Both of them are widely regarded for their notable strength in their particular abilities. Both are proud men who have a reputation they feel they must uphold, and they are also perfectionists (probably Alden less so than Cassius). This perfectionism carries over into their aspirations and expectations for their children, whom they hold to high standards. Lord Cassius and Alden both have something of a vision and a legacy which is very important to them and which they strongly prioritize, hence the great weight of expectation placed on their children. I didn't realize until lately how similar they actually are.
However, before you throw them both out on the same trash pile as lousy dads, there is one key difference that is worth noting.
The difference? Where Cassius is cold and distant from his son, Alden actually makes an effort with his children. Sure, he fumbles and gets things wrong and doesn't always choose the best way of doing things. But he still *tries.*
Okay, but how do we know Alden's intentions are good as opposed to Cassius's? Well, how do elves usually know these things? Empaths, right? And who in the Lost Cities is an even more powerful empath than Lord Cassius? Keefe (thanks, Mad Scientist Gisela and your messed up Legacy).
The point is, Keefe senses. He knows. Especially as a powerful empath, but also as an abused child. Because children who are verbally and emotionally abused tend to be extra sensitive to the words and moods of those around them. Keefe was a recipient of this kind of abuse from his emotionally distant father. So even as a young kid, what did he do to get away from it? He went somewhere that he didn't feel unsafe. He started hanging out at the Vackers' house. His sensitivity as an abused child combined with his powerful Empathy didn't set off warning bells when he was there. It was his safe place. You'd think if Alden's intentions weren't good at least, Keefe would've felt the same discomfort he feels around his own dad.
To further prove this point, recall the time when the teens ran away to join the Black Swan. As they were leaving, Alden and Della gave everyone hugs and said goodbye, treating Sophie, Dex, and Keefe just the same as they did their own kids. Keefe would've felt it if this gesture was insincere. But instead he recognizes that they are genuine, even if their well-intended actions aren't always perfect (And even if Keefe still doesn't know how to handle parental affection 😢).
So yeah, the bottom line is that, while Alden and Lord Cassius have much in common and the potential to be a lot alike, the key difference is that Alden actually tries, actually puts effort into doing what he thinks is right, even if it does turn out to be shortsighted or imperfect. And Keefe's relationship to him as opposed to his relationship with Lord Cassius is how we tell the difference.

Okay but this is really funny because like
POV: You are a young girl with blonde hair living in a random town in America. You're an ordinary human girl, with no hint of telepathic powers or any sort of elvin DNA whatsoever. Life is going pretty well. You're still in elementary school, in the right grade for your age, and learning at just the right pace. You live with your parents, both of whom are your actual biological parents.
One day, you are playing in a park with your friends, having a grand old time, when this guy walks up to you. He's probably in his early twenties, wearing normal-looking clothes but seeming very uncomfortable in them. He looks at you, sees that your eyes are blue, and nods quickly to himself. Then, he pulls out a strange gadget from his pocket and hands it to you.
"Here," he says, a strange gleam in his eyes. "Lick this."
Because you are young and clueless, you agree. It tastes like some kind of weird fruit you've never tasted before, and you're trying to figure out what it was before the gadget flashes red. The guy gives a long sigh and pulls out a list from his pocket, crossing out a name.
"It's useless," he mutters, walking away.
That was strange, you think, preparing to go back to play with your friends. But out of the corner of your eye, you could have sworn the strange guy vanished into thin air.
“We’ve been looking for you for 12 years” 12 years ago she was an infant, what criteria was Alden even using to look and narrow it down that’s a baby. was Alden sending Alvar to snoop around literal babies. he’s standing awkwardly invisible in the maternity ward looking at newborns waiting for them to talk instinctually and then they don’t and he just leaves like welp, maybe next time. watching a toddler from across the street like nope, that kid’s shit at walking can’t be an elf, next. baby failure

I’m pretty sure the last book will need to be at least 1200 pages to like satisfyingly wrap up everything, but I doubt the publishers would be down lol. I’m gonna be thinking about how Shannon can pull this off for a while
