Small and Safe Operations
Narrow aisles are challenging to navigate through and even the most experienced operators can err while maneuvering a forklift. The tiniest error may lead to operational concerns, leading to accidents, injuries, and damage to human and goods.
A reach truck on the other hand is designed specifically to perform optimally in narrow spaces. It has a smaller turning radius and smaller wheels making it highly maneuverable and agile in narrow aisles. Using reach trucks in such environments can help reduce the chances of accidents and mitigate the risks associated with larger forklift trucks.
Additionally, such warehousing facilities need reach trucks only to perform a specific set of tasks.
Despite being able to perform most of the tasks that other larger forklifts can accomplish, reach trucks are useful in specific applications. They are easier to maneuver and operators can easily be trained to handle one in such a case. In an environment with narrow aisles, these trucks offer an agile, safe, and optimal solution to improve the overall efficiency and productivity of the warehousing facility.

Forklift Retirement: How to decide when it's time?
Today, various modern worksites, warehouses, manufacturing industries, and construction sites have adopted different material handling equipment to fulfill specific purposes and enhance productivity. Companies are employing a mix of different tools together with an aim to derive productivity and function at a high speed. Forklift trucks have been at the forefront of this transition for many years now.
More and more industries have started employing forklift trucks for their storage and warehousing needs. Forklifts help organization reduce costs, better handling of material, reduce handling accidents, increase efficiency and productivity. Over the years, the forklift has also evolved—with the introduction of electric forklifts and electric stackers for warehouses, the adoption rate has further increased.
Any equipment, however useful, is bound to have a service lifecycle. But it is often hard to understand when to retire and replace heavy-duty equipment, especially forklift trucks. So here are the factors to look at while considering forklift replacement.
1. Excessive forklift wear and tear
It's important to complete schedule maintenance of forklifts irrespective of their fuel type—and keeping a good maintenance record helps improve efficiency and the overall life of the vehicle. However, unavoidable prolonged usage can lead to a need for regular repairs which can be a cue for you to consider forklift replacement.
Paying for continual repairs makes the cost of replacing worn parts or electrical components higher. To avoid such situations, you must consider replacing or retiring the machine if you have the following regular repair needs:
● Hydraulic leaks
● Clogged fluid lines
● Worn chains
● Jammed mast
● Battery problems
● Unbalanced suspension
● Steering difficulties
2. Delays & Downtimes
Downtime for any unit in your forklift fleet can directly affect your business efficiency as the losses incurred can cost much more than parts and labor. If your diesel or electric forklift, electric stackers, reach trucks, or any other material handling equipment is on downtime- being repaired, an additional cost due to idle operators is also incurred. That is why it is important to have a backup equipment. If not, when the lost profits due to delays in product movement are taken into account, the total cost of downtime may impact the overall productivity.
However, forklifts which have been used over a period of >7 years might give a lesser output. So, it becomes vital for your facility to retire a forklift when delays start affecting your operations.
Initiate appropriate countermeasures beforehand
To ensure optimal performance your equipment must always be well maintained. It is a fact that poorly maintained equipment can lead to an accident, injury, or failures. Such events can easily be avoided by regular inspections and regular maintenance cycles. Apart from being a good practice, it also helps you predetermine the signs of wear and tear on all your material handling equipment—be it diesel or electric forklift, electric stackers, reach trucks, etc.

Common Misconceptions About Forklift Training
Despite the amount of information available online, there are many misconceptions about forklifts and forklift training. There is a genuine reason for the confusion, myths, and misconceptions. When it comes to operating warehouse forklifts and forklift training, there are several layers of information regarding regulations, directives, policies, standards, best practices, guidelines, manufacturer’s instructions, etc. It makes sorting out the important stuff a little difficult. We are going to dispel some of the more common misconceptions about forklift training.
Forklift operators must be certified
Governing authorities toss around the term ‘certify’ so freely that it is possible to mistake certification as a legally mandatory requirement. According to the guidelines, it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that each operator has been trained and evaluated properly.
Operators need a certificate of competence issued by an officially recognized regulatory authority to prove their qualifications, but it is the employer of the forklift operator who must provide proof of the competence of warehouse forklift operators.
While it is true that operators must hold a valid certificate to work, they must also be familiar with the specific equipment they are hired to operate. It’s imperative that employers provide specific and familiarisation training (and re-training when required) before authorising either permanent or contract-based staff to work.
Forklift operators must carry an operator’s license on them while using a forklift
Except for a few select locations, forklift training certificates are not required during the actual forklift operation. Issuing a certificate is a quick, easy way for a supervisor to confirm an operator has been formally qualified. The forklift training certificate warrants that the operator is qualified to use the truck, but its physical presence is not compulsory when the operator is at work. Known exceptions are restricted to a certain province in Canada
Forklift operators must be re-certified every three years.
Regulations state that operators’ knowledge and skills be re-evaluated at least every three years. If any unsafe behaviour is observed, only then must those operators receive a refresher course in forklift operations.
A forklift training course must be provided in the following circumstances:
The operator has been observed conducting forklift operations in an unsafe manner.
The operator has been involved in an accident or near-miss incident.
A condition in the workplace changes in a manner that could affect the safe operation of the truck.
If the operators are found to be proficient and their working conditions have not changed, then additional training is not required.
If any of the issues are apparent, then training and evaluation may need to be done before the specified time interval.
While quality forklift training (or re-training) is vital for safety, good supervision from capable supervisors is critical to ensure fewer incidents and improves efficiency.
Once qualified, forklift operators can operate anywhere, on any type of equipment
An operator’s area of work is restricted to the workplace in which the certification they were issued and are not transferable. Regulatory authorities expect operator training to be limited to the worksite and the equipment specification for which the operator has registered.
For example – If you acquire a new larger counterbalance, different from what your employees are used to, even if it is the same brand, it will be significantly different to operate.  In this instance, the operator should undergo conversion training. However, novice retraining is not usually needed.
Operators don’t need training on loads above a forklifts’ rated capacity, if they’re already trained on that truck
It is imperative that forklift safety and training is taken seriously. Regardless of whether your staff are trained to operate safely on specific types of truck, you must first ensure they are given the right equipment for the job in hand.
If a lift truck is not unduly rated to handle a particular load, that load must not be moved, even by a trained operator. Never attempt modification of existing trucks with longer forks or added weight without the authorisation of the manufacturer.

7 ways to minimize forklift downtime for your business.
Although forklifts have undergone drastic transformations over the past several decades, the basics of good fleet management remain the same. The basic tenets are centred around supervised management and periodic forklift maintenance procedures which ensure low operational cost and high productivity.
Operating a warehouse forklift fleet in today’s business ecosystem poses a demand on efficiency. There are basic practices any organization must follow in terms of forklift operations and maintenance to reduce forklift downtime.
1. Keep a track of your fleet and maintain records
Crunching numbers is a sure-shot path to maintaining the quality of your hardware. You’ll want to keep a track of several details -
a. Purchase or rental price
b. Date of purchase
c. Brand
d. Model/ Serial Number
e. Maintenance logs (dates, issues)
f. Engine hours
Ensure that the forklift maintenance sheets are kept in the truck’s file so that it is easily accessible whenever required.
2. Optimize the Forklift Replacement Cycle
There is no single answer for when a warehouse forklift should be replaced. Most companies, depending on its application, replace their forklifts every five to seven years. Performance profiles for each warehouse forklift have to be carefully curated over time to determine the endpoint of a fleet vehicle.
3. Keep Spare Parts handy
The benefit of keeping a forklift maintenance log is that you can analyse the trends from previous repairs and breakdowns and keep a stock of spare parts in your inventory, ready for use. An annual review of repair trends can help you design the budget and stock the ideal quantity of spare parts. This is useful in reducing forklift downtime.
4. Know your quirky machines Inside and Out
There is a plethora of warehouse forklifts with a whole lot of eclectic personalities to match. Keeping track of your fleet’s different makes, models and maintenance required can be an asset when it comes to handling forklift maintenance schedules. Consult the user manuals for any information regarding forklift operation, application and maintenance.
5. Match the Forklift with the application
Research on forklift operations reveals that many times specifications do not match the job requirement, the usage cycle they are generally used for. For optimum productivity, forklift specifications need to match the job and load requirements.
If you haven’t had a local dealer audit your forklift operations, call and request one soon. It is imperative to increase worksite productivity.
6. Perform planned maintenance
Perform planned maintenance after specified usage hours. It is important to keep your vehicle running smooth, by completing scheduled maintenance. This includes tasks like oil changes, filter inspections and battery recharge.
The same is true with warehouse forklifts. Planning regular maintenance checks can reduce downtime and operating costs. This could help you find small faults that, if ignored, over time could have resulted in major breakdowns.
7. Train forklift operators
Ensure that the people operating the machines are well trained and have received training with genuine certification. Take the time to watch the forklift operators at work, how they handle the equipment and how they deal with issues.
Regular re-training on the basics of forklift handling and safety procedures is a good way to save costs. Train your operators to perform daily or pre-shift inspections to avoid workplace hazards.
These are some of the main points to keep in mind when managing forklifts. The aforementioned tenets are crucial for optimum worksite fleet management. Sticking to these procedures will ensure minimum downtime and increased work productivity.

Forklift Tires: Impact of tire wear can cost your forklift productivity levels.
Forklifts are warehousing operator’s best companion to ensure high productivity. Out of all the things that makes forklift an asset for the material handling facility, tires are one of the most important parts. Are you wondering why? Tires ensure that the load is balanced equally and the movement is seamless. To ensure the loads are properly moved from one place to another, forklift maintenance and assessing tire quality is imperative.
Whether your forklift has cushion, solid pneumatic, or air pneumatic tires, proper tire maintenance will go a long way. But if it takes a backseat amidst managing the workload at your material handling facility, it is most likely to affect productivity levels of your forklift and the warehouse facility. Here is how tire quality can affect productivity of a forklift.
Damages equipment or workplace The load carried by a forklift needs to be equally distributed to ensure smooth movements. If one of the tires of a forklift are deflated one way or the other, there are high chances that the load will not be distributed evenly through the chassis to the ground. This condition can cause damage to the forklift, the load, as well as the floor. Hence, it is important to check the condition of the tires and flag any issues before operating it. Identifying defects and issues prior to forklift operation is an important part covered during forklift training. It ensures that the possibilities of most common accidents are ruled out thereby offering a safe working environment. Increases maintenance cost It is always recommended to do a thorough inspection of tires before forklift operation. If there are defects in the tires which are overlooked, the issues that are currently present might aggravate later. The wear and tear of tires can later result in expensive forklift maintenance. Therefore, following a routine checklist before starting forklift operation is important. This is a vital part of forklift training program that helps the operator understand the significance of routine check-up and how it ensures their safety as well as others working in the vicinity.
Affects longevity of the forklift When you invest a large amount in forklift tires, you need to follow proper maintenance routine to enjoy great output. Improper forklift maintenance has repercussions that can cost you more than your investment. Always invest in good quality tires that are compatible with you forklift. Failing to consider what tire type will suit your forklift applications can result in numerous issues and wearing of tires faster than expected. Also, every tire type needs different maintenance. Once you decide a tire type ideal for your forklift, you must understand the maintenance procedure from the manufacturer to enhance the longevity of the tire and the forklift as well.
Increases risk to forklift operator Worn out tires can hamper the stability of forklifts handling heavy loads that can result in severe worksite accidents. For safe forklift operation, a lot depends on choosing the right tire type as per the applications and adhering to proper forklift maintenance. It offers a safe working environment and is economical as well. For instance, if your warehouse demands durable forklift tires, solid pneumatic tire is a good investment as it is designed using hardened rubber that does justice to toughest working environments. Similarly depending upon your application and work intensity you can decide between cushion tires and air pneumatic tires.
A lot depends on tire quality to ensure your forklift delivers the desired output. If you have experienced what a wrong choice of tire or improper maintenance can do to your warehouse productivity levels, learn it through us. This blog has been created to keep you informed about the possible mistakes you could make beforehand, there is more than information that we can offer. Planning to buy a new forklift? Consider these tips to make the right choice
Buying a new warehouse forklift is a big investment and can result in a high Return on Investment (ROI). But deciding which one to buy can be a complex and time-consuming process. Hence, taking an organized approach to come to a decision is highly recommended. Choosing a warehouse forklift that complements your business requirement increases productivity levels, decreases overall downtime, and enhances safety of your storage. Clear understanding of the basics of forklift operation, business requirements, and workload intensity will help you make the right choice. Besides these understandings, here are some tips that help you arrive at a right decision about which forklift to buy.
Assess the lifting capacity and height
First assess the load capacity. Take the highest load to be carried and add the weight of pallets or bin carrying the load to it. It is advised to increase this summation amount to 10% and look for lifting equipment pertaining to the weight now. For low load capacities, 1.2Ton to 5Ton, electric forklift is good. For heavier capacities, prefer diesel. Next, is the height. If your storage facilities have the provision to store loads at a height, you need to consider a forklift that can reach there. For this you need to assess the lifting height of a forklift. Also, check with the deration at higher heights. Different models can lift loads at various heights. Also, you should consider height restrictions if your facility has any as well as the aisle width because it can impact your decision too. For heights also find out if there are any entry or exit point heights, this also defines the equipment choice.
Consider your forklift operation area
The forklift operation area plays a major role in deciding which forklift to buy. Before you buy a new forklift, it is important to consider the working conditions. For instance, if yours is a pharmaceutical, food and beverage warehouse facility then a battery-operated forklift will be a good choice as it offers a clean work environment devoid of any disturbances and plays no part in noise and air pollution. Also, assess the temperatures of the working place, for higher temperatures, diesel forklifts are advised, and electric forklift are ideal for cold temperature or cold storage. Also, assess the aisle width across the space of operation. There are facilities where the width between two aisles is low, this requires compact equipment which can maneuver easily across aisles.
Decide the tire type
Your business environment will help you decide what type of tires you should go for. If most of your material handling work happens indoors then consider a forklift with cushion tires. These are less expensive and have a tighter turning radius. Or if most of your material handling work happens outside then go for a forklift that works well with solid pneumatic tires.
Assess your workforce capabilities
Before you decide to buy a new warehouse forklift, you must assess the knowledge of your forklift operators. If it is a new kind of a forklift your operators haven’t used before, consider scheduling a forklift training session first. Forklift operation is a skilled task and needs to be done with utmost care. To ensure you are offering a safe working environment, proper forklift training before forklift operation is a must.
Select an engine type
Different businesses involve different forklift operation. If your warehouse facility stores food or pharmaceutical products then a battery-operated forklift will be a suitable choice. If majority of load at your facility comes under the heavy-duty category, then fuel-propelled forklift like diesel forklift will work well.
Choose a forklift manufacturer carefully
It is highly recommended that you buy forklifts and other material handling equipment from a trusted forklift manufacturer. Buying equipment from the same manufacturer will help you in lowering costs and help maintain efficiency. Also, this will build good relationship with the manufacturer and ensure that they will serve you with the best of their ability.
Buying a forklift requires a lot of considerations and planning. No matter if it is your first-time buying  forklift or you’ve bought some in the past, careful assessment plays a major role in procuring a suitable one. Get the most out of your forklift with these maintenance tips.
Every equipment needs proper maintenance to ensure it serves the work requirement beyond its warranty period. The forklifts and other material handling equipment at your storage facility needs maintenance too for maximum safety and reliability. One cannot expect that any piece of machinery will continue working flawlessly unless trained engineers, operators, and technicians are spending ample time in maintaining it. Negligence towards forklift maintenance can not only pose challenges in its smooth functioning but also cost money and cause accidents that may affect your material handling productivity and smooth operation.
Regular maintenance not only helps to keep your forklift in a good working condition but also decreases expenditures. Timely forklift maintenance can identify issues and help rectify them before it causes a serious problem that can result in loss of business and fatal injuries.
Here are a few tips that will help for forklift maintenance and ensure reaping business benefits from it for a longer duration.
Start with cleaning the forklift
Gathering proper knowledge about the basics during forklift training is the key to ensure proper forklift maintenance. Cleaning the forklift is the first thing operators must do before forklift operation. This practice will help remove excess oil and dirt allowing the vital parts of the forklift to work smoothly.
Check for leakages and change the oil for better performance
Regularly changing the oil is the most important part of forklift maintenance. It ensures that all the parts of a forklift are well lubricated and there is no sludge formation or corrosion. Failing to change the oil regularly can affect forklift operation as it causes friction between the machine parts leading to damage to the forklift’s efficiency and longevity. Hence changing the oil of the machine regularly is highly recommended. Check for any leakages before you start the forklift, especially for oil leakages. If you observe oil leakages or hear the sound of machine parts brushing against each other, report the issue immediately before it causes more damage.
Move on to check the braking system
Brakes are as important for a forklift as it is to any other vehicle. So, it is essential to check the braking system as soon as you get behind the wheels. A forklift loads and unloads weights all the time and hence needs a fully functional braking system to bear the load and avoid any damage to the objects being moved or accidents. If you observe issues with the braking system, don’t overlook them. It is a concern that needs to be escalated to the supervisor and get it fixed.
Check the tire pressure
Tires enable a forklift to perform the loading and unloading function efficiently. They help in bearing the weight and facilitate easy movements while carrying the load. Hence, it is important for a forklift operator to check the gas pressure in the tires before operating the forklift. Insufficient gas pressure that is over-inflated and under-inflated tires can cause poor traction which can increase the risk of accidents and load damage. It is recommended to inflate the tires with the right amount of gas pressure and check for proper gas pressure before loading or unloading.
A daily forklift checklist is an important part of forklift training as strengthens the basics of forklift operation. The checklist consists of checking for things mentioned above and many more for identifying and rectifying defects and issues with a forklift to eliminate the risk of accidents and load damage. If you are looking for forklift training or annual forklift maintenance, OM is a leading forklift manufacturer in India that also offers you a wide range of forklifts to buy.

When it comes to enhancing safety at a storage facility, the first thing to consider is offering is a proper forklift training to the employees. Employers must prioritize imparting as much knowledge about safety practices to the ground staff as well as forklift operators. This will not only help them be better at their jobs but also increase the safety quotient of the facility. According to the statistics, most accidents happen due to improper forklift training. Therefore, providing proper forklift operation training needs more attention as working with a forklift is not an easy job. It needs an operator to be fully trained and qualified to operate. Working with a qualified forklift operator will reduce the possibilities of accidents as well as boost productivity.
Using material handling equipment correctly
Material handling equipment makes life easy at a storage facility and also enhances safety and productivity by using the right equipment for the required assignment. Using the wrong equipment can be dangerous as it can cause damage to the load, the machine, or the operator. Proper know-how of using material handling equipment helps offer a safe working environment. For instance, if the load is to be placed in compact places, a forklift operator must know that a forklift made to offer easy manoeuvrability in compact spaces will be a suitable choice or using a warehouse equipment like reach truck or stacker. Failing to take such a will result in damaging the loads around as well as the forklift leading to increased expenditure in repair that could have been avoided in the first place. Also, it would reduce the efficiency of the equipment being used. If you are new to the material handling business, a forklift manufacturer will be able to help you with all the information about the proper usage of any material handling equipment.
Following worksite safety rules
Every warehousing facility has some rules which all the employees must adhere to. Failing to do so most likely result in minor or major accidents or damage to the load. Rules such as driving on a designated path, adhering to the speed limits, checking signs and drive accordingly and looking out for docks, ramps, and bays are to be strictly followed to offer a safe working surrounding.
Wearing safety workwear
Wearing protective clothing while working in a warehousing facility ensures that you are safe from the common accidents that happen most often. High visibility jackets, safety shoes, industrial hats, gloves and tight clothing are a must while working in a material handling location.
Running a routine inspection on the forklift
For a smooth forklift operation, as an operator, you must run a thorough inspection before you start working with it. The daily check includes checking for leakages, proper functioning of horn, lights and controls, sufficient air in tires to name a few. It helps in identifying issues beforehand and escalating them to the worksite supervisor to take immediate action. Acting on the defects right away will help reducing forklift maintenance costs and the possibility of accidents as well as increase the longevity of a forklift. Failing to perform a routine check on the forklift or any other material handling equipment before using it can cause serious accidents and an increase in repair costs. If you are planning to buy a new type of forklift or other material handling equipment or availing services like forklift training and forklift maintenance and repair, OM is a leading forklift manufacturer in India that offers these services along with a wide range of forklift models that can be a great value add to your material handling facility.
