Vrăjitoare- Modern day witchcraft in Romania- By Lucia Sekerková
“The practices of vrăjitoare — witches, fortune tellers, goddesses and healers — have long formed part of the traditions of certain Roma groups. In the past, Romanian Roma women who identified as vrăjitoare could find potential clients anywhere, and anonymity was guaranteed through their position on the fringes of society. Today, globalisation has inherently transformed this profession — instead of walking the streets in search of a palm to read, vrăjitoare can be sought out by clients on social media, before inviting clients into their homes. The profession has been transformed into a business, inherited across generations, with girls as young as nine starting their promotional vrăjitoare profiles. For her photo series, Vrăjitoare, Lucia Sekerková photographed modern-day witches, all born with with what they call “a gift”, in Bucharest and the surrounding area.”

The spectacle of war has always been an appealing theme for filmmakers. In the history of cinema, individual conflicts have a tendency to generate their own relatively stable and consistent aesthetic codes. The experience of trauma that invariably saturates and constitutes experiences of war is, however, much more indirect in the language of cinema. There is no established visual vocabulary for trauma: it takes on much more ambiguous, quieter, and at times unrecognizable forms of reckoning with the consequences of conflict. Dijana Jelača’s Dislocated Screen Memory: Narrating Trauma in Post-Yugoslav Cinema (Palgrave 2016) is the first study that thematically gathers twenty-odd years of Balkan cinematography by giving an analytic voice to highly complex and sophisticated webs of traumatic representation. The challenge in examining trauma on the screen, says Jelača, is that “cinematic trauma praxis resides in the things that cannot be overtly said or directly shown, but sometimes only hinted at.”

On this day, 6 September 1923, communist partisan hero Nada Dimić was born in the small village of Divoselo, modern day Croatia. She was the only Croatian-Serb member of the country’s first anti-fascist unit in Sisak. She undertook raids and sabotage on railroads, and was arrested and tortured by the Ustaše (Croatian fascists). In prison she attempted suicide, but it was unsuccessful, however comrades then helped her escape, upon which she rejoined the struggle. Tragically she was re-arrested by Italian troops who handed over to the Ustaše who again tortured her but again she refused to reveal any information and she was executed some months later. Dmitri Prigov’s visual poetry
Dmitri Prigov (1940-2007) was a Russian conceptual poet, artist, and dissident. One of the things he is famous for is his стихограммы (стих ‘poem’ + грамма (’gram’, a part of words like phonogram or program, from Greek γράμμα ‘recording’))
I don’t understand much about poetry, and probably neither do you, but I mean look at that

И восстанут они все из могил своих, и призовут нас всех к ответу – And then they will all rise up from their graves and bring us all to justice
