Heaven is a Kiss and a Smile
Heaven is a Kiss and a Smile by WinJennster (@winjennster) Rating: Explicit Word count: 38k
Dean’s life is well ordered. He’s successful and happy - at least, that’s what he keeps telling himself. When his little brother slash roommate moves out to live with his fiancé, Dean’s faced with living alone. Sam recommends his TA, Cas Novak, for Dean’s new roommate. Dean happily accepts, relieved that he doesn’t have to go through the trouble of finding a new roommate himself. Only Cas moves in with a stripper pole. Because apparently, his hotter than hell new roommate is a professional stripper. Who managed to see Dean in purple panties his first night in the house. Cas is probably going to shake up Dean’s entire world - and Dean just might let him.
I love how Dean is portrayed in this fic. The author doesn’t shy away from showing how sad Dean feels all the time. I would even call him depressed. He isn’t happy with his life; he hates his job, his love life is basically dead, he hates where he is in life; he feels lonely, and even though he has plenty of material possessions, not even that makes up for the hollowness in his life.
That’s when Cas comes in. Though I like the fact that it isn’t Cas who ultimately digs Dean out of his sadness. It’s Dean who makes that journey. Dean makes that jump himself, but Cas is there to support him.
Don’t get me wrong, Dean and Cas’ relationship still plays a major role in this fic. Especially when shipper!Charlie makes an appearance and takes an oblivious Dean to the stripper club where Cas works. But ultimately it’s Dean who fights for his happiness.

Broadway Musical
Broadway Musical by Griftings Rating: Mature Word count: 12k
This is the day that marked the Holy and Blessed Union of Dean Winchester and Jo Harvelle. The merging of prominent bloodlines is always a grand occurrence, but breeding pedigree hunter families like Winchester and Harvelle is something to be rejoiced. It is also something to be meticulously planned, which thankfully the Host is very good at. Or, the romantic comedy where Dean Winchester and Jo Harvelle are destined to get married, Castiel is given the task of playing matchmaker and fails terribly, the entire Heavenly Host becomes a sitcom audience, God warns against male pregnancy, and Jimmy Novak is incredibly unimpressed with angels in general.
Behold—it’s time for the glorious union between Dean Winchester and Joanna Harvelle, an event set in motion and finally come to fruition! Their coupling will bring forth two sons, set to become the vessels of Michael and Lucifer to bring about the end of days! The angels are atwitter, the seraphim are standing watch, the cupids are readying their arrows—
Only, none of their matchmaking attempts work, and the plan, ultimately doomed to fail from the start, finds its savior in one angel who takes it upon himself to step up to the plate with his new vessel, Jimmy Novak. Castiel finds more than he bargained for in the brilliantly burning soul of a green-eyed pincushion, and the fate of the planet hangs in the balance if Castiel can’t help bring about the end of days.
Heavily doused with gut-busting humor and peppered with characters from earlier seasons gone by, Broadway Musical tells an alternate retelling of Supernatural that’ll leave a stark impression on most any reader. Occasionally, I’ll come back to this piece and remember just how much I love it, from the storytelling to the wide array of characters, from angels to humans to even God Himself (in more of a Monty Python sense than Chuck.)
June will be this work’s tenth anniversary, and it’s definitely held its place in the Destiel lexicon. After all, what’s not to love about an accidental romantic comedy with an angel acting as his own accidental matchmaker?

Buzzed
Buzzed by allmystars (@allmystars-i) Rating: Teen and Up Word Count: 3.3k
When Castiel’s long-time ‘secret’ admirer, Dean Winchester, gives him one-too-many anonymous roses, he decides it’s time to nudge the man into an admission. When Dean Winchester’s neighbour and long-time crush, Castiel, hints at his feelings for Dean, he decides maybe it’s time to cut the crap and ask the man out. With a date that’s sweet as honey and warm as wine, Dean’s wondering why he ever doubted himself in the first place.
Now, I know that the whole Cas and bees thing is born from fanfic and headcanons, but who can deny that it’s probably one of the better ones our fandom has come up with? There are even entire bangs centered around the idea, which is how I found this sweet as honey fic.
Buzzed is all about bakery/bar owner Cas who owns the shop next to Dean’s flower shop, where, from his roof, he can watch his neighbor nervously pick out the perfect flowers to deliver to him, all under the guise that Castiel has a secret admirer. Cas is extra sweet about it when he gives Dean the nudge he needs to encourage him to make a move.
What results is a fluffy first date between them that you won’t want to miss, especially if you’re looking for something especially soft and honey-sweet. Dean is adorable as well, but you’ll have to click to read about the bouquet he makes, each flower picked out just for Cas. It’s adorable, and a quick read, and definitely not one to miss.

With The End Came You
With The End Came You by lotrspnfangirl (@lotrspnfangirl) Rating: Explicit Word Count: 68k
The world has officially ended. With a viral pandemic sweeping across the globe, causing infected hearts to stop, their humanity to cease, and their being to crave the taste of human flesh - there’s no hope for things to ever be the same. After seeing Lisa and Ben torn apart, Dean does the only thing he can do - he leaves Cicero in search of his Uncle Bobby and his brother, Sam. Along the way he meets Castiel who is struggling to find his own purpose in the new world. Sometimes, the world doesn’t make sense. But there are things they can’t deny, and falling in love when everything else is falling apart is just one of them.
If we're completely honest with ourselves, hurt and broken, Dean is always a good time. In every section of this story, Dean thinks to himself, "Sorry, Lis," and "Stay safe, Sammy." Those two things are all that keep him going. In the very first chapter, we see just how shut down he's become in the face of living during the end of the world; he's angry, anguished, and alone. (Yay, alliteration!).
When he's injured, an unexpectedly kind man who seems to have no self-preservation skills what so ever rescues him and nurses him back to health. Cas is a doctor with a positive outlook so confident that even Dean finds it impossible to stay miserable around him for long.
They have adventures, follow breadcrumbs Sam has left behind, go on journeys, experience the sparkling joy of falling in love, and there's even a cameo by Dean's beloved rocket launcher. Eventually, they land themselves in an honest-to-goodness cult.
The revelation of the origin of the virus and the devious nature of the cult worshiped cult is an awesome read. But nothing beats the beauty of Dean and Cas being just them together. They're funny and sweet and snarky and vulnerable. It's a beautiful story with a lot of unexpected twists and turns, including the authors ability to make our favorite love story so original and full of joy in a joyless world.

Dark Side of the Moon
Dark Side of the Moon by imogenbynight (@thevioletcaptain) Rating: Explicit Word Count: 55k
Five months into his six month mission, an accident leaves Flight Engineer Dean Winchester stranded on the moon. It comes down to a man he has never met to bring him home.
This fic has The Martian vibes, so if you like your shipping paired with the inherent horror of being stranded in space, I have great news.
Dean is the sole survivor after an accident kills his crew. His hope for survival rests in a stranger, Cas.  Dean and Cas bond immediately and it makes for a compelling love story. The fic is also well cast with deeply likable characters.
In the end, if you are looking for tense drama with a happy ending, this is a great choice. There's a real Cas saving Dean from Hell vibe to the fic that hits so very right.

Little Pink Houses
Little Pink Houses by Persephoneshadow Rating: Explicit Word Count: 15.3k
Deputy Dean Winchester has seen some interesting things in his time, but dealing with a tiny house on Fergus Crowley's property might just be the strangest, especially when the snarky, kinda gorgeous protester who owns the thing answers the door buck ass naked. Dean's life might never be the same.
I am always a fan of a story where Castiel is allowed to be the snarky asshole that he truly is, so I was quite excited to find this story, where Castiel is a protester willing to exchange quips (and orgasms) with Dean, while Dean is exchanging quips (and orgasms) in between picking his jaw up off the floor and figuring out how to do the right thing.
From the moment that Dean sees Cas, he's completely entranced by him--and can you blame him? (I mean, what would we do if we were confronted with a naked Cas?) There's an instant attraction that leads to Dean making some very questionable on the job choices, but it all works out well in the end.
This fic is worth it to see Dean and Cas bantering back and forth with each other. So few fics choose to focus on Cas' sense of humor, and I always love to see him and Dean bickering back and forth. Cas is his best grumpy, snarky self in this fic, and Dean (much like the rest of us) goes head over heels for him. 💖

(Don’t) stop texting me
(Don’t) stop texting me by feelthe_beat Rating: Explicit Word count: 96k
Castiel Novak is relatively happy living his solitary life as a Starbucks Barista. He lives alone with a cat named Hamburger, and he has one (1) emotional support friend, Gabriel. Unfortunately, he is plagued by the fact that some guy (see: a random hot dude named ‘Dean’) is giving out Castiel’s phone number as his own. And he’s been doing it for months. So, of course, when Castiel’s at work and a hot stranger gives him his own phone number for the Starbucks Rewards Program… well… it doesn’t go well.
When you first start reading this fic it’s like omg this is hilarious, Castiel is a snarky bastard, Gabriel is his annoyingly amazing self and then there’s Dean who supposedly doesn’t care enough about the people around him to give them his real phone number.
So a little arrangement between Castiel and Dean is made, and as time goes on, Castiel gets to know Dean better. So, again, it’s all fluff and fun until one day Dean shows up at Castiel’s workplace completely bruised. The longer Castiel thinks about it, the more he pieces all the information together and the more both he and the reader realize that something absolutely terrifying is going on in Dean’s life.
And Castiel shouldn’t care, that wasn’t part of the arrangement, he should, in fact, hate Dean’s apparent detached attitude and lies, but he just can’t help caring and worrying about Dean.
Despite Dean’s well-practiced grins and nonchalant demeanor when we finally understand what’s truly going on in his life, it just breaks us as only a good, refined fic can do.
Not to worry, though, this will also put everything back together and let you heal as you follow the journey of Dean’s own self-healing while Castiel does his best to support him, help him in any way he can, and ultimately enable him to find happiness after a lifetime of hardships.

Something Wicked This Way Comes
Something Wicked This Way Comes by aileenrose Rating: Mature Word count: 9.5k
Just like every summer, Dean and Sam are tracking tornadoes. Surprisingly, it's the nerdy computer scientist that sweeps Dean off his feet.
Every June, Dean and Sam make good on an old tradition and an easy way to make money, for them anyway—storm chasing across the plains, capturing footage other chasers wouldn’t dare dream of, at the risk of their own safety. But Sam is graduating college soon with his girlfriend Jess, and Dean knows that one day, they won’t get this chance again.
But in a twist of fate, the two of them encounter an old rival, Crowley, in a bar in Tulsa. And, incidentally, a data analyst from the Storm Prediction Center named Cas Novak, dressed like he’s completely out of his element in a bar full of tornado tourists, but wherever Dean turns in town, Castiel is there—and, Castiel comes to his rescue as well, right when the world figuratively and literally crashes down around him.
Growing up, I wanted to become either a storm chaser or a meteorologist, neither of which came to fruition. This fic, though, has always reignited a spark for me, and the author shows off every bit of research they did just to make it feel true-to-life. It also calls back to the original canon with plenty of lines, and a climactic scene that changes both of their lives in any story, in a barn, albeit this time with potentially more hazardous consequences.
The writing draws you in from the first scene and takes you through a few days in the life of a storm chaser, on the backroads of Oklahoma, hunting down one of nature’s deadliest forces—and as well, Dean meeting the love of his life by pure happenstance, with the two embarking on a new life together as the credits roll. It’s a fic I’ve come back to time and time again, and definitely one that stands out as unique!

Clap Your Hands If You Believe
Clap Your Hands If You Believe by piscesapplelady (@piscesapplelady35) Rating: Explicit Word Count: 83k
Castiel is a Fae prince, charged with protecting the forests and their inhabitants. When someone or something begins killing hikers in his forest, Castiel is concerned and suspicious. When two F.B.I. agents arrive on the scene, he's immediately taken with the one with the green eyes. As more victims are discovered, it is also revealed that the agents are really hunters. What does that mean for Castiel as an otherworldly being? What does that mean for the killer in the forest? As a rule, Dean doesn't trust monsters or creatures. He's confused then when he starts having feelings for the faerie at the center of their increasingly odd case. On one hand, Dean wants to gank him, but on the other...he has such amazing blue eyes. As Dean argues with himself and his feelings, something still lurks out in the woods, killing people for a sinister purpose. He can't afford to lose focus. And what happens if the faerie really is the problem?
To continue celebrating spring, this week I chose to review Clap Your Hands If You Believe, a Canon divergent fic that could almost  be canon, if it weren't for the fact that in this story, Cas isn't an angel.
He's Fae. A Faerie Prince, in fact, one whose job it is to protect the forest, which Cas does by being a forest ranger… for hundreds of years.
In this universe, Angels exist, Dean went to hell, the apocalypse went down, but Cas wasn't involved, all Sam and Dean's traumas a thing of the past as they continue to hunt. Their latest case comes by way of a dead body right on Cas’s doorstep, along with a few other bodies to follow. Cas is quick to confess that he isn't exactly human, and that's just another wall Dean puts up, once he learns the truth.
The rest of the fic is a sweet story about the two of them falling in love, and finding out the true meaning of sacrifice and dedication. It's filled with excellent Canon references and an alternative ending that I personally think made the whole fic even more awesome on its own separate level.
This fic is great, with an engaging story and alternating points of view that even include Sam at times. All the characters that come into the story are in character and well-written and Dean and Cas shine the entire way through. Make sure you don't miss this one!

My Eyes Are An Ocean
My Eyes Are An Ocean by entanglednow Rating: Explicit Word Count: 10k
It's amazing what you decide you can get away with when you can't see a damn thing.
The apocalypse is over—prematurely, at least, and everyone is alive and in one piece. Or, at least, Castiel and Sam are. After Castiel and a horde of angels took on Lucifer, Dean bore the brunt of his wrath against Lucifer as a bystander and with that, the last thing Dean ever saw was the bright blue of Castiel’s eyes, and nothing else.
Weeks later, and Dean learns to navigate the world without sight, while Sam refuses to approach the topic and Castiel hovers noiselessly, without ever saying a word. Which is fine, to Dean, until he and Sam need to come to terms with their newfound freedom and circumstances, and until Castiel has to make a choice—heaven or Dean.
My Eyes Are An Ocean was one of the first works I read years and years ago, because I was on a Dean whump kick, and the author did not disappoint. Post-apocalyptic season five fics always hold a soft spot for me, because while raw from the fight, Team Free Will, burdened with newfound freedom, always get to navigate the new world in whatever way they choose. In this case, Dean, while admitting to missing his sight, enjoys the time he has left the best he can, with his family at his side.
With a canon so fraught with trials and hardships, entanglednow gives Dean, Castiel and Sam a new lease on life, and gives Dean a shot at being happy in a time where the world felt like a massive weight on his shoulders. An ending we all could’ve hoped for, had the show not continued on to become what we know and love today!

Lavender Fireflies
Lavender Fireflies by casblackfeathers (@casblackfeathers) Rating: Explicit Word Count: 28.5k
Lavender Fireflies Camp is possibly Castiel’s final chance to mend his troubled relationship with his daughter. After an ugly divorce and a nine-to-five job that only further distanced him from Claire, his sister — Anna — suggests spending two weeks camping with Claire. Castiel sees this as his opportunity to bring his daughter closer to him. He had not anticipated meeting a charming firefighter, Dean, on the first day and becoming instantly enchanted by him. Still, Castiel can’t help but feel disappointed when Dean seems to change his mind about them. Usually, the hippy, kumbaya shit that Sammy digs so much is a hard pass for Dean. But coming to Lavender Fireflies Camp wins big brownie points for allowing him to spend time with his brother and his daughter Emma. The last thing Dean expects to happen is to find sex on a stick and everything his dreams are made of in the guy with messy dark hair and blue-as-fuck eyes he meets there. Dean is immediately smitten. Too bad that being a jump-the-gun kinda guy, the first thing Dean assumes is that the redhead camping with Cas is his wife. Then he makes everything a fuckton more complicated for everyone, y’know, Winchester style.
Maybe it makes me a broken record, but I’ll never get tired of saying that we’re the luckiest fandom when it comes to fanfic. At any time, we can open ao3 and get an entire novel's length fic that pulls us into another world where we can spend some time reading about our favorite characters falling in love.
Lavender Fireflies is one of those fics. Told in hues of purple, this fic brings us into a story where Dean and Cas are two adorable single dads doing their best to bond with their daughters, and in Cas’s case, salvage his relationship with his after a rocky divorce. While neither of them are expecting the other, their meet-cute is sweet, and both of them walk away crushing hard, until Dean meets Anna, and immediately assumes she’s Cas’s wife. What follows is Dean trying to keep his growing feelings for Cas from getting stronger, all while Cas decides to drop his walls and see if Emma’s handsome dad might want to kiss him back. They find themselves in increasingly adorable situations, and of course, work out their misunderstanding, and by the end, you’re rooting for all of them to be the little family they are destined to be.
