You can tell by the reaction people have to Penelope asking Colin to kiss her whether they ever experienced being a wallflower/insecure fat girl at a party or not.
Because you say it's pathetic, I say it's relatable, no matter how desperate it may sound. If you've never had your insecurity eat you up from the inside (but also the outside, as Portia literally told Penelope that she was delusional for thinking she was gonna find a husband in her third season out) to the point you genuinely, wholeheartedly believe no one will ever love you unless you physically change, then obviously the scene is off to you.
But Pen literally told Colin she felt stupid for thinking she's gonna find a husband (she just started believing what the ton and her mother said) and that she knows no one would want to kiss her. And for a romance girl like her, do you think the thought of never having a kiss, never experiencing that passion, would be easy to bear? I can so relate to being the most romantic of the bunch but also being the loneliest and aching for physical and emotional romantic love.
She is so vulnerable and so real in that moment but y'all gotta bitch about it because it doesn't make sense to you. It doesn't make sense to me either because she's gorgeous, but that's the thing - no one ever told her she's gorgeous and actually meant it. And even if they did, there must be 10 more people who didn't that keep that insecurity in her, specifically her sisters and her mother.
Nicola said this one was for the wallflowers, and it truly is, so if you find scenes like this cringe, you just don't relate to the character enough to feel it and recall moments when you had the same thoughts as her.

Local Floriography Bitch Emerges from Hibernation Because Cute Spy Found Family Romcom Has Cheeky Flower Shot!
Tumblr media
Alright, let's get the Basic Bitch of Floriography addressed first, which means looking at Bond and his Yellow Rose
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Roses are the flower that even people who know next to nothing about Floriography usually know on sight, but it's still cute that they gave the flower representing Friendship to Man's Best Friend.
Moving Counterclockwise through the picture, our next subject is Yor, sporting a fetching Orchid on her hairband.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Orchids symbolize Beautiful Woman, Refinement, Grace, and Uniqueness, and while it's 100% accurate for Yor, a part of me started to strongly suspect here that Loid is responsible for everyone's blooms, and used to opportunity to give discreet messages to his family without them knowing what he's telling them. (sneaky sneaky~)
Speaking of Loid, the man himself is up next, standing slyly with a Blue Aster.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Asters are also known as Starflowers, a sneaky nod to Loid's codename Twilight. And like roses, asters have different meanings depending on the colors you choose. Blue asters just so happen to symbolize Trustworthiness and Faithfulness. The perfect flower to represent a hardworking family man devoted to his wife and daughter! And certainly not the sort of thing one would associate with an undercover spy!
And finally, there is the last Forger Family Flower, and a brutal suckered punch to my soul;
Anya, and her Cosmos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just like with Loid's Aster, Cosmos are also flowers associated with the stars, and have even been called "Mexican Asters." Which doesn't feel like an accident when Anya here is mimicking Loid's pose and holding the flower to her lips. And Cosmos have a very, VERY special meaning.
"Hold My Hand and Walk With Me"

What is the Message of AOT?
Since anime watchers have finally seen the complete ending of Attack on Titan, I've wanted to pose this question to other fans. What is AOT's message?
The messaging of the story has been contested since 2021. Is Isayama saying what Eren did was right or wrong? Is the story nationalistic? Was peace actually achieved, given the epilogue scene featured in bonus pages in the manga, and the end credits of the anime?
I always felt that the story was never saying what Eren did with The Rumbling was right.
The fact that the characters we have followed since the beginning, who were Eren's closest friends and people he cared about the most, were going against him proves that. Even in the moments where Eren is speaking with Armin in Paths, it is never framed that what Eren did was a good thing (I will be ignoring that scene in the manga and treat the anime as the true messaging). When Armin learns that 80% of humanity has been killed, there is devastation, disgust, and anger. In the end, Armin even takes partial blame for this happening. Because he showed Eren a fictional version of what the world was like beyond the walls. He gave spark to this Eren. A person who was disappointed in the actual world he saw, and the hatred he had for the people who hated him and all of Paradis. Armin says that they will meet in hell together. For they both have blood on their hands.
I also don't see the message being nationalistic. Both the nations of Marley, Eldia, and Paradis have done horrible things to other people in the name of nationalism. The most nationalistic group, the Jaegerists, are never portrayed in a good light in the series. They are extremists in the AOT universe. Any important Jaegerist characters we follow (mostly Floch) get their ideals questioned constantly and end up dead.
As for Eren trying to achieve "peace", and whether or not he failed at it, I don't think that's the main takeaway from AOT either.
To me, the message of AOT was to show how gray the world is, how cruel it can be, and how hate can fester and bear horrible things. But also how understanding one another and having empathy for others can begin to put a stop to the cycle of hate.
We are at first presented with a seemingly simple story of the last of humanity needing to defeat these terrifying titans, and finally win back all the land and possibilities beyond the walls that they have lost. It's such a typical black and white, hero and villain story that there is no need to dig deeper.
That is until you learn about titan shifters. Until you learn about Annie, Reiner, and Bertholdt. Until you learn about there being humans beyond the wall, and that they consider all Eldians and those on Paradis to be the villains and devils. Until you begin to sympathize with the enemy, and the hero turns into the villain and nothing is as black and white as it was in the beginning.
It's amazing how AOT is able to flip your feelings about certain characters or situations on a dime. One minute you view Reiner as the worst kind of person, the next you have sympathy for him. Another minute you want Marley to suffer for all they've done to Eldians and Paradis, and the next you don't want them and the whole world to be crushed under the feet of titans.
Because the show makes you have empathy for them. It makes you understand them.
There are always innocents on both sides. People who have been fed a lie so that they can project their hatred onto others. Never pausing to consider that these people are people too.
That's real life! There are no complete heroes or villains. A hero to one person will be the villain to another, and a villain to one will be a hero to the other. It's scary and so sad how true this is to our real history and our current world today.
I find AOT to be a warning and a lesson. To not allow yourself to be consumed by hate. To really sit down and try to understand the other person. Why they think the way they do, and why they act the way they do.
If only we can just sit down and talk, before we take action. Then peace can be achieved. But that just isn't how the world works now.
Will it ever be like that? I find the final scene of the anime and manga, of the boy discovering the tree where Eren is laid to rest (and possibly the parasite or thing that creates titans with it) to be the answer.
How will the boy use this information and/or power? To further hatred or to spread peace?
What would you do?
I would love to hear other's thoughts on what they think AOT's message is, or even just some themes that were explored that they found interesting. I find Eren's character fascinating in particular, but don't feel equipped to do a deep dive.
I just wanted to ramble and put to words some thoughts that have been spinning inside my head since the anime ending. :-)

Another change they made to Levi's ending that I wanted to talk about, and that I loved, was the birds flying over head, with him, Gabi and Falco watching them.
We see Levi look up at them, and I feel like it's the fulfillment of his own philosophy, his own belief in the sanctity and value of life. I feel like, with that final shot of him, looking up at those birds, at the sight of life thriving, despite the devastating destruction and loss of life they all experienced not so long before, it's like the narrative affirming that Levi was always right.
Throughout the story, Levi was diametrically opposed to Zeke in their beliefs and philosophy, Zeke representing the idea of life being meaningless and worthless, Levi representing the idea of life having intrinsic meaning and worth. And I feel like that final shot, with the birds, and with Levi looking up at them with maybe the most contented expression he's ever worn, is a confirmation of Levi's belief and what he represented within the story, that life matters, that life is worth living, that life is worth protecting and cherishing and fighting for, and a rejection of Zeke's belief, that life is meaningless and worthless and nothing but cruelty. Levi won against Zeke in more ways than one, then. Not just physically. He won against Zeke's nihilism and cruelty. His beauty won against Zeke's ugliness.
I think that's also part of what makes Levi's ending so powerful and satisfying. It feels right that Levi should win that battle. That compassion and kindness and empathy should defeat bitterness and hate and selfishness. Even if just for Levi's story, that holds true, it's enough to leave the rest of us with hope.
Because I think that's also what Levi represents within the story.
Hope.
He's the best that humanity has to offer.
As ugly as we all can be, as cruel and heartless and uncaring, there's always the exception, always the example of what a person can be beyond that cruelty and heartlessness, in spite of the cruelty and heartlessness. And in Attack on Titan, that person is Levi. He's that exception.
Levi is relatable to us, not because he's like us, necessarily, but because he's what we hope and strive to become. He's like a shining light in the darkness. He's that person who shows us we can be better, who shows us the way to being better.
In many ways, Levi is the beating heart and soul of Attack on Titan. He's that little bit of hope in the story, that maybe, some day, some how, we really will all find a way to live, showing greater compassion and kindness to one another. That's Levi. By being the best of us, he shows us we can be better too.
