I'm re-reading Mossflower now. And I feel like talking about the characters and sketching them. But I'm not sure if it's worth spending time on. This fandom looks pretty dead to me. But I still love my crazy dangerous mice!

Bolo Scrimpaw rambly thoughts
Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout spoilers below
Even though it’s been around a week since I finished the game, the Scrimpaw’s storyline still disappoints me so much. I love Bolo and Valo and they’re two of my favourite characters in the entire game but the way we didn’t even get an ending to their storyline irks me. It doesn’t even have to be a happy one, just one that has a proper conclusion.
Given the climate and attitude of the Redwall world, their storyline was probably going to end poorly regardless especially given Bolo’s thought process and the fact that the game implies he knows about Veil, but it was one I wish was discussed more. In universe, it makes sense that nobeast really talks about Bolo after he betrays the group, but the entire time afterwards the only thing on my mind was worrying about what will happen to Bolo and Valo.
Objectively speaking, Bolo’s decision was still a very poor one, but it was one that was clearly very emotionally driven and has been weighing on his mind for a while. Looking at the events in his perspective, it’s reasonable (not excusable, just reasonable) why he did what he did. Other vermin animals don’t like his family and most woodlanders are still very distrustful, which justifies the fact that his first reaction to strangers is to treat them with hostility. Joining up with a vermin horde at least ensures some level of kinship and protection that he doesn’t have. I’ve also noticed that all of the weapons are kept in his room and Mila mentions Bolo saving her from a bird, so he’s most likely the “defender” of the family and one of the ones who screens any strangers along with his father.
Something that also bugged me throughout the game was the way Liam (I’m unsure how much dialogue changes between Liam and Sophia so for disclosure, I played as Liam) kept insisting that Mila wasn’t vermin because she was good and that Redwall Abbey will trust her. From what we’ve seen in the books, that’s an objectively dangerous assumption to make, even if the end of the game shows that they are willing to trust Mila. However, I still have a problem with Liam trying to deny Mila’s “vermin-ness”. I didn’t think much of it at first because Redwall uses vermin interchangeably to mean both the vermin animals and evil beasts (which says something in of itself) but then Liam almost mistakingly calls Mila and her family “vermin” in front of her face in the Winsome Wraith, thus implying that it’s used as both here too. Laban and Liam’s optional conversation before crossing the river supports this too, Laban still calls them vermin even though he doesn’t have malice towards them. It bugs me because at the end of the game, Liam’s takeaway is that Mila and Valo are the exception to the rule “all vermin are evil” when that rule still shouldn’t be a thing in the first place. I realise this is essentially a large societal issue in the Redwall world and something that can’t be easily changed in like, two days (from my math, the main story takes place in about four days with the Scrimpaw’s being met in the third day), but Liam’s insistence that Mila and Valo aren’t vermin while still saying that all vermin are dangerous still feels wrong to me. Liam shutting down Glimber when he suggests that Mila may be turned down annoys me too.
This ties into my thoughts about Bolo in the way that, his thinking isn’t wrong. Mila and Valo may be the exception to the rule but the rule still exists. By default, because he’s a stoat he’ll always be seen as dangerous. Most of all, he’s just a teenager. He’s obviously not going to make good decisions, in fact he picked a very stupid and selfish one, but I still don’t hate him for doing what he did.
The sections at the Winsome Wraith show a deeply distrustful character while his worries are brushed aside as teenage moodiness. Most of his anger in his sections stems from his distrust of Liam and it’s not helped that most of your dialogue options keep bringing up the fact that nobeast trusts his family, his living conditions aren’t that great, or his mom is dead. The fact that the mice are being actively hunted doesn’t help either.
There’s so much ideas that could be explored with Bolo but unlike Valo and Mila, he vanishes for most of the third act so we don’t get as much insight or dialogue opportunities with him. In the end, he isn’t even given a proper ending. Some mouse just says that they’ll search for Mila and Valo while Bolo‘s mostly an afterthought. Again, the reaction is justified considering what he did but if anything, he should have a more fleshed out ending because of what he did. Good, bad, I don’t care, just a better payoff.

Anyway, Bolo Scrimpaw my beloved, you’re my 2nd favourite character from The Scout, I wish we got more insight into him, and I like him a lot more than Veil don’t @ me
