What's Next? A full solo acoustic show at Opening Bell Coffee in Dallas. Format is an extended story teller set highlighted by the first performance of "Angels Gathering" on piano.
The historic Opening Bell provides a great intimate setting for a singer/songwriter. This show is all ages and early on a Saturday night.

People often ask, “Do you write the words or music first?” I can now respond, “Sometimes it starts with a friend sharing a poem.”
youtube
Here is my part of the story. We were at an open mic when Susie shared her poem. I never do this, but I immediately told her that I could turn her words into a nice song. For some reason, I could hear the chorus while simply reading through her words on her iPhone. I composed and recorded “Angels Gathering” in my home office. My goal was to arrange the song so that Susie could play and sing it on piano. Maybe it was the strength of the words, the arrangement or just dumb luck, but the demo came out a bit better than expected. We concluded that “although it is not perfect, it’s too good not to share.” So, I did my best to mix the simple tracks and asked Megan Delany to create artwork that is as meaningful as the song. After many conversations, we decided to release the song on Good Friday.
So, here it is! “Angels Gathering” – a song by two friends who met at an open mic in Texas.

Again, life is full of surprises. I wanted to do a full show in the Fort Worth Stockyards after watching a song swap during my first trip to North Texas.
Due to unanticipated events, I will perform with the Rodger Delany Band this Sunday at the Rhinestone Saloon - one of my favorite spots in the Stockyards.

From the early days of my music “career,” I was lucky to have great gear. In this one area of my life, I avoided learning life’s lessons the hard way. Tonight, I will perform on this old guitar at Opening Bell Coffee here in Dallas. For those who travelled all over the Delaware Valley to see me strum a few songs, this is that guitar - Taylor 614ce that I purchased at the Cherry Hill Mall in the summer of 2001. As I was rehearsing today, I thought, “There really is no substitute for quality.” And then, I thought about how lucky I am. The guitar reminds me of countless shows and the friends who miss more than words can capture.

It's strange how things come together. When we moved to Texas, I tried to get shows at acoustic venues. In spite of a full acoustic CD and what seemed like a great run of acoustic performances in Philly, I struggled to even get a response from smaller venues in Dallas. Fortunately, the typical ghosting practices of listening rooms and coffee shops led to other great opportunities.
With that background in mind, I am excited to share that on Saturday, January 6th, I will perform a solo acoustic set at a coffee shop in Dallas called "Opening Bell." The performance is part of a much bigger event called, "2024 DFW Live Music Revival" - a 42 band event spanning four days and two new music venues.
Love this event! Set time is 7pm. And, the how is All Ages.

When I was told that I would have the opportunity to perform at the Texas State Songwriters Championship, I reached out to a handful of friends for song recommendations. Every recommendation was unique. That is, no two songs were the same.
Like every other performer, I wanted to win. I kicked around a number of strategies including hiring a singer and/or leveraging the band to provide a powerful performance. But, I wanted to make a good impression representing who I am as a writer and as a performer. In the end, I decided to keep it simple – an old acoustic guitar performing “Ray of Hope” as powerful possible in order to setup the intimacy of “Alright to Love (Christmas Again).” Despite not feeling 100%, the judges awarded me a prize for “Most Original Style.”
I am glad that I chose these two songs. “Ray of Hope” has been a highlight of the band’s performance for years. And, it is likely to be the title track for my new CD. I look forward to sharing the story and a studio recording of “Ray of Hope” in 2024.
“Alright to Love” is possibly the best song that I’ve written. A competition during the Christmas season presented the perfect opportunity to perform the song and share the story. “Alright to Love (Christmas Again)” is based on a true story. The song captures two beautiful moments early in my relationship with Kim. The chorus was inspired by our first visit to the former Pierre du Pont residence at Longwood Gardens. As we walked out onto the beautifully grounds, I held Kim’s hand and said, “It’s alright to love Christmas.” The line, “she dressed as Santa and danced by the fire,” is from our first Christmas together.
I am including a link in the comments to the version of “Alright to Love (Christmas Again)” that was recorded in at Philly Sound Studios by Rich King and included Mark Rogers’ WSTW holiday compilation (see photo).
Thanks again for all of the encouragement and support both with music and through many challenging times in my life. As I’ve shared previously, it is increasingly difficult to remember when I was miserable. I am blessed to share life’s adventures with the love of my life.
I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a great new year!!

Although I did not win the Texas State Songwriter’s Championship, I had a great time trying. Big thanks to everyone who attended and reached out to me. The support was tremendous and very much appreciated.
Thank you to the folks who organized the event and to Bronson Louis who performed audio magic while snapping this cool photo. Looking forward to next year!

Love sharing this video from July’s Six Springs show. The song is called “Ain’t Done Yet,,” which is special to me for two reasons. It is the first song that I wrote specifically for this band. Nothing’s in stone. We continue to craft our parts as we develop the song. And, “Ain’t Done Yet” has become my mantra. Why does somebody my age still perform original music? Well, I simply do not believe that creativity has an expiration date.
Big thanks to our encouraging friends who love Six Springs as much as us. And, special thanks to Brad and Keri for creating and environment that encourages musical innovation.
Next show at Six Springs is August 24th.

Big thanks to Chris Ritchie and Chris Babler for another great show and to all of our friends and family who made this one a lot more fun. As always, thanks to Bradley Springs and Keri Springs for creating such a great place for new music.

My mother used to say “Never say never.” Like so many other lessons, this took a long time to learn. On June 1st, my old band, Mother Redcap, will release a new single. Yep. This is all new music. The song is called “Hurricane Beach.” It was recorded by the original members of the band that was known as “Rough Mix” who released a single called “In the Dark/Graduation Day” and an EP called “Throwing Stones.”
Hurricane Beach features Steve Oakley on vocals and guitar, Ted Karapalides on guitar, Chris Ritchie on bass, Don DiPaolo on drums and me on guitar just like back in the day.
With Ted’s leadership, Hurricane Beach was recorded over the last year or so virtually. That is, Steve, Ted and Don recorded their parts in South Jersey while Chris and I recorded our parts here in Texas. Ted finished mixing Hurricane Beach just a few weeks ago.
It’s funny how time changes tastes and technique yet “Hurricane Beach” sounds unintentionally just like Rough Mix many years ago. I am proud that we did this and grateful to Ted for leading the effort. I doubt there will be a tour or anything. But, maybe we will get together for a show at the old high school, basement of the church or a parking lot where one the dingy old nightclubs used to be.
Clearly, I am excited about the opportunity to work with these talented friends again. And, I can’t wait to share the new song with our old and new friends. In the meantime, here is the artwork that Megan came up with for Hurricane Beach for Spotify, Apple Music….
Thank you for your friendship and support both today and back in the day.

The Other Side was the last song written and recorded for the Before I Let Go CD. As a result, it is a little different and in some ways a little bit better than the other tracks.
The Other Side is the only positive song on Before I Let Go. Instead of being a guitar ladened rant, the song is about helping others recognize that there is life beyond their current problems.
Back when I lived in South Jersey, I helped a few friends move furniture out of their marital homes. I listened while they “cried in their beer” and considered compiling their worry into an exhaustive lyric and throwing big guitar at it, But, I ended-up creating a simple song to answer the “what do I do now” question.
The Other Side starts by acknowledging how hard it is to see tomorrow when our world is falling apart today. Faith, hope and personal beliefs are important. But, it really just takes help. It seems trivial, but people need their hands held, emotional hugs and a reminder that there is a better tomorrow. And, they need a lot of help moving cabinets up and down tight staircases.
As the last song recorded for the CD, The Other Side enjoys significantly better audio. I applied technology and lessons learned to improve the quality of the vocals, guitar and overall texture.
I hope you enjoy the rare positive message. The Other Side is the last song that I will share from Before I Let Go. If you enjoy the music, then like, subscribe, follow…, the music on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube.
The next song that I share will be a bit of a cool surprise.
