LET’S PLAY VINYL WORKSHOP
The Let’s Play Vinyl workshop was a warm, inclusive vinyl session in which visitors were invited to bring their own vinyl and play on #HeritageHiFi for the crowd.
It was kicked off by Thali Caya Lotus, founder, owner and operator of CAYA sound system – one of the most exciting new sounds of the current UK scene. Thali created a great ambience as people came to watch her play and to view the #LetsPlayVinyl photography exhibition in the same space, and created an equally welcoming atmosphere for those who had brought their own vinyl records along from home. Heritage HiFi’s warm, heavy bass cultivated the perfect sound for the happy Sunday afternoon vibe.
Nearby, Dee Bo General and people from his toasting workshop danced along while chomping on bread rolls – they obviously needed a boost after the hard work in the earlier session – while members of the public took turns to play. The first participant, who said he’d been collecting reggae vinyl for years, gave a shout out as he played his first track: “Respect to you Thali, this is for you and all the ladies in the house.”
Others continued that positive theme, played uplifting tracks like Nairobi Sisters’ and ‘Promised Land (Dub’. “I really should not have spent this much on a seven inch,” said the participant playing when I told him how much I loved that tune!
Later Young Warrior – son of legendary New Cross soundman Jah Shaka, with strong links to the Lewisham / South East London sound system scene – took to the decks, playing a fine selection of roots music and ended by giving thanks to all involved in the weekend – “We thank you for the vibing!” – to happy applause, whoops and whistles.
‘It’s such a traditional warm sound,” said one visitor. “An absolute pleasure. It’s amazing to have stumbled across this on a Sunday afternoon… fantastic.”
Amazing and fantastic: I can’t think of a better way to sum up the final part of the weekend.

You know man herb is a plant, a vegetation
growing on this land ever since creation
our cattle haffi eat so Jah grow grass pon di land
and herb he made it grow for the service of man
but now they come fi try to take it out of my hands
claiming that it is an illegal substance
but herb could not be bound by the laws of man
so i don’t intend to wait for legalisation
