she found herself laughing because there was the royce she knew. he was cocky, self confident, and assured. he was funny and charming and one of her best friends. “You sure are.” she felt him move to twirl her, and countered to meet him, twirling and barely being scared when it turned into a dip. for a moment, her heart was in her throat. but he caught her, he always did.
“this is how you dance with me, you weirdo.” she was giggling near uncontrollably as she went from one spin to another, to a dip and back. it was all she could do to keep from doubling over and breaking it with her laughter. this was the best time she’d had in a long time. that was for sure. and she was loving every minute, flushed and happy.
Tumblr media
Royce was trying to hold in his laughter just as much as she was, especially when she called him a weirdo. “Yeah, well, I get to dance with Rock every night. He’s a little more skilled than you, I have to say. But don’t worry about it. He gets a lot of practice. And at least I don’t have to worry about you biting me when you’re sick of it.”
He sidled them over to the table where he’d set his drink, leaning over to take another quick sip before returning to the dance. He slowed their dance a bit again, swaying at a more comfortable pace. His arm tightened around her waist almost absentmindedly, holding her close. Roy stumbled a bit again and threw his head back in laughter. “Sorry, sorry. I’m a wee bit tipsy. Rock's legs are much shorter than yours. Not used to it.”

Addy laughed as he danced with her. he was a little clumsy, maybe, but they’d done this before. like. a lot. so even if it wasn’t perfect, she worked well with him. and it felt right. “He dressed me, he dressed you… wonder what he’d think of the two of us next to each other.”
she laughed as he stepped on her feet. she’d gotten a few tonight, and although she had to take a step back, she was alright with it. alder had already done it so much. she was fine. “You’re fine, Roy. You know you’re great. just don’t let it get to your head, alright?” she took another step, two, accidentally beginning to lead the dance.
Tumblr media
Maybe it was her comforting words, or the alcohol, or a mix of both, but he realized his nerves were unnecessary. They’d danced together dozens of times before in his tiny living room, and this shouldn’t be any different – well, maybe if he didn’t want to humiliate himself, it should be. But nonetheless, he started laughing. “You’re right. I am great.”
He twirled her around and brought her into a low dip, straying quite a bit from the traditional waltz. “This is how I dance with Rock. But he hates it.” Roy tightened his arm around her waist, continuing to dip and spin her with little to no finesse. Like they truly were just in his living room. “Do you think I should quit my job and become a dancer?”

dahliambervale·:
How she hadn’t just known that he’d be there at the bar was a mystery to her. It was his job. The victor’s ball especially required all hands on deck. Nonetheless, that just so obvious thing of seeing him mix and serve drinks with a expert, fluid movements made her heart drop to her stomach and stutter to a halt for a moment. She even almost stopped in her tracks.
Dahlia had thought a lot about their encounter. How Roy had demanded an explanation from her and instead of giving him one she’d just walked off. She did regret that now, although she knew she wouldn’t have been ready for any sort of explaining that day in any case. She’d been too shocked to find the sort of words it’d take to explain to the person that’d been her family, the closest person she’d ever had to a home, why she had never come back. All she knew now was that she wanted to perhaps find out if there was anything that could be salvaged from this.
She came prepared to place her order, when the exact drink she’d had in mind was placed in front of her. Dahlia was speechless for a moment. He remembered. “I didn’t think you still remembered that,” Dahlia said. Roy’s smile betrayed his nerves. She wondered if the tugging on the corner’s of her lips did too. “Am I that predictable?”
Her lips spread into a wider smile. “Thanks. Satchel made it. He’s insanely talented.”
Fingers curling around her glass, her gaze moved over the bar and the crowd that seemed to be a constant there. Looking back at him, she was silent for a moment. It was strange to just make conversation as though nothing had happened. It was awkward. “How’ve you been? Since…” I ran off again. Dahlia trailed off at the end.
He was half expecting her to take the drink and run again. Or leave the drink and run, to add insult to injury. Surprisingly, she seemed to be trying to make conversation – maybe she’d already had a few drinks? “Not predictable. I just know you.” Roy shrugged, the smile on his face holding a tinge of sadness. When she mentioned Satchel, he quirked an eyebrow. So they were friends here, too? At the very least, then, he’d be able to check on her well-being through Satch if need be.
“Busy.” Roy didn’t wait and make her finish her sentence. He gestured to the bustling bar as if to prove his point. “Always work for a bartender around here.” He hated the discomfort he felt while speaking to her. That wasn’t how it was supposed to be. He craned his neck to hear the order that the woman behind Dahlia was demanding, then reached for one of the pre-made popular cocktails and handed it to her before looking back at Dahlia. “Look, I’m almost off, if you want to...catch up?” It came out almost as a question, but a hopeful one. This wasn’t exactly the best place to hash out their issues. He wished more than anything that they could just go back to normal. “Unless you have some...I don’t know, mentor duties? Not sure how these things go, but it seems like I’m the only one who’s working more than celebrating.”

Hyacinth usually would have startled when she heard someone speak behind her but Hyacinth was feeling good as she smoked her joint and sipped at her ? cocktail of the night. She rolled her head lazily to see who had spoken, although she had already known as soon as she heard the voice. She smiled softly at Roy “Here I am! Got two more kid’s blood on my hands but I’m here.” She laughed lightly at how quick Roy had been to pull the cigarette out from behind his ear and light it. She felt the corners of her mouth curl up more at the compliments. “You flatter me.” She shook her head. “And no, I couldn’t tell, you look dashing.”
She couldn’t control her mouth as it pulled up mischievously as Roy leaned in “What…are you doing?” She asked trying not to laugh but then failing. “Is that the price of your silence?” Nonetheless she brought the joint to her lips and took a few long puffs before leaning in towards the already leaned forward male her lips hovering just over his but not completely closing the space.
Tumblr media
“Why, thank you,” he replied when she said he looked dashing, giving her a playful wink. He paused when he mentioned that she had more blood on her hands, but decided not to bring it up just yet. His thoughts stopped when she leaned in closer to him, and it took him a second to realize what she was doing. He pursed his lips, sucking in the smoke from hers as she blew it into his mouth. A grin spread across his face as he inhaled the smoke and held it there for a moment, laughing when he exhaled.
He leaned back but remained close to her, their knees still nearly touching. “Some prices for silence are much higher. No pun intended.” Roy rested an arm on the back of his chair, sipping his drink. How many had he had tonight? He couldn’t even remember. The joint was adding a pleasant warmth to his already drunken state. “So, more blood on your hands, eh? How’d that happen?” If he were more sober, he probably wouldn’t have asked. Unfortunately, he was even more nosey while intoxicated.

treelish:
The night was fun! everyone was celebrating, and a few sponsors had asked her to dance with them. it was a good time, even if everyone but her seemed to be drinking today. Addy let it all happen, happy to be there, happy to be alive, happy to have alder alive. so she danced and twirled and chatted the night away.
and then, roy came over. he looked about the same as usual. perfect hair, good suit (a slightly fancier one with a very nice jacket, rather than his usual work clothes). but she could see the stains peeking out that marked him as her best friend. and there he was, being a dork and bowing to her. “you like it? My friend styled it for me. he’s the best stylist I know.” and she wasn’t just saying that because she loved satchel dearly. the dress was great!!! just being reminded of her outfit made her beam a little brighter. because wasn’t it just the best??? and she really did feel beautiful. which wasn’t something she felt, most of the time.
but then he asked her to dance, and she couldnt help but laugh and drag him up and onto the dance floor. she was half tucked into him as they walked, the pair of them clearly giggling and enjoying each other’s company. she put her hand on his shoulder, grabbed his other hand, and smiled. she likes waltzes. they were simple to execute but upbeat and fun. perfect for a dance with Royce, if she did say so herself. she found herself getting into the rythm, dancing it with a certain pep in her step, heels be dammed.
“I like that jacket on you.” she noticed, after a moment. it came out of the blue, but the gold threading had caught her eye when they’d turned just so. “very spiffy.”
Tumblr media
Roy’s arm fit comfortably around Addy’s waist, their hands clasped together as they began the waltz. She was clearly much better off than he was – Roy was quite clumsy, as she already knew. “Thank you,” he replied, a genuine smile on his face as he looked down at his jacket. “Well, thank Satch. He picked it out for me. I think he’s dressed more than half the crowd tonight,” he said with a laugh.
He squeezed her hand in his, trying to contain his smile as he looked at her. He was failing. “I think you should’ve given me another dance lesson or two. At least I haven’t stepped on your feet yet– ” just as the words were leaving his lips, he stumbled over her toe. “Fuck,” he laughed, shaking his head. “I take it back. Listen, I can only play the part so well.”

“I should’ve known I’d find you out here.” Roy was taking a break from the crowd, lighting up the cigarette he had behind his ear almost as soon as he stepped outside. Hyacinth had beaten him to it, it seemed. He sat in the chair beside her, smoothing out the jacket of his tux before looking over at her. “Not much of a fancy party guy, if you couldn’t tell. I think you’ve been handling it much better than me – you look stunning, by the way.” She did, really. He couldn’t understand how she was even able to break away from the party – she seemed to be swarmed with people fawning over her all night.
Roy leaned forward, keeping his elbows on his knees. He eyed the cigarette she was holding herself, quickly realizing that it wasn’t nicotine at all. “Smells like you’re smoking something a little stronger than I am.” Roy grinned at her, waggling his eyebrows. “Care to share?”

Working the bar tonight was exhausting. Roy fixed a rather strong cocktail for himself just as he finished his shift, finally escaping from behind the bar. The outfit he was wearing was surely the nicest and most expensive he’d ever owned, though he was worried he would still stick out like a sore thumb once he joined the rest of the mingling crowd. He was completely out of his element, and he was making a beeline for what – or who – had become his main source of comfort, not just at the ball but in the Capitol in general.
He’d spilled more than a few drinks while he watched her as the night went on, and one of the red wine stains was stubbornly peeking out from behind his suit jacket. He couldn’t help himself. She always looked beautiful, but tonight... he couldn’t take his eyes off of her. It was leaving him with an odd feeling in the pit of his stomach that he’d hesitantly label as butterflies. He’d had flings in the past, sure, but he’d never liked anyone before. Not romantically. Roy suddenly felt flustered as he tried to process his thoughts. Addy was his friend, his best and closest since Dahlia. That was all. Right?
Before he even made it to where she was standing, he was smiling. “You look...” he held out his hands, gesturing to her dress, “gorgeous. You look amazing. Wow. Although I must say, I’m a little disappointed you didn’t end up wearing my sweater as a dress.” He laughed, trying to shake off the random bout of nerves he was feeling. Why would he be feeling nervous around her? He set his drink down on the nearest table so that he could take both of her hands in his. “May I have this dance, my lady?” He asked, bowing but laughing as he did so.

Roy was almost hoping that he would be allowed to go home after his shift at the ball, rather than having to stay and attend as a guest. He enjoyed his safe spot behind the bar, content with people watching. While he generally liked to talk to new people and never shied away from a social situation, the Victor’s Ball was a bit above his head. So much glamor. He’d never seen so much food in his life, so many expensive gowns, so many strange people. The exorbitant wealth of the Capitol was something he was still attempting to get used to, and seeing it all unfold in front of him was overwhelming.
He’d been kept busy all during his time working, at least – not much time to think. Most guests were certainly not holding back with the alcohol tonight. At least he’d be taking home a nice wad of money. Roy was nearly done with his shift when he saw her come up to the bar, and his heart caught in his chest. She looked breathtaking, holding all the confidence and beauty that the Capitol wanted their Victors to display at these types of events.
It was like he went into autopilot, immediately gathering the ingredients for the drink he knew Dahlia was going to order. He still remembered her favorite. By the time she reached the front of the bar, Roy was standing there with the drink in hand. He set it down in front of her, a nervous smile coming across his face. “Assuming your tastes haven’t completely changed,” he said, a note of teasing in his voice. His eyes swept over her ensemble again. “You look like a million bucks.”

treelish·:
Addy was a little bit greatful when she felt her feet hit the ground again, stumbling a little before he grabbed her shoulder. they had a sort of friendly camaraderie that she loved. Addy didn’t trust everybody on earth to hug her, usually she had to initiate contact to trust it, but she was a very snuggly girl. she was always happy to hang out with Royce, he was always willing to hold her as long as she’d hold him right back.
he wrapped his arm around her, she wrapped hers around his waist and leaned her head against his armpit  and shoulder (as that was where hers fell). suddenly, he was remembering something, and she paused. suddenly, he was holding out a beautiful little rock to her. well. perhaps not beautiful. but the first thing addy noticed was the shape, the flatness of it and the beautiful white color. then she looked at the gold, green, brown, and a bright happy ‘congradulations’. she could guess at trees and laurels, based on the fact that it was handed to her. but the fact that he’d known??? and made a rock for it? she’d mentioned in passing during one of their phone calls that she had a collection of rocks, while they’d been introducing each other to their cats. but this rock was PERFECT. she squeaked, a bit, in excitement, holding it close. “this is a dream.” she realized, quietly. “I’m not awake, there’s no way.”
Tumblr media
“Wow. It’s that good? Maybe I should forget bartending and become an artist,” he teased, knowing she was referring to the general situation as a dream and not his poorly painted rock. He couldn’t wipe the smile from his face when he looked at hers, thrilled that she seemed to enjoy the gift. “I’m glad you like it,” he said, tightening his arm around her shoulder a bit. “Now come on, let’s get some beverages.”
The bar was closest to them, and Roy didn’t hesitate to pull a full bottle of champagne from the fridge to take for himself. He earned this bar more than any of the older, unenthused bartenders did, anyway, and stealing from the Capitol didn’t exactly leave a bad feeling on his conscience. “Oooh, they have sparkling cider.” He turned around holding the bottle up, eyebrows raised. “Raspberry. Thoughts? You need something a little more exciting than tea.”

laughing. joy. so much joy. he’d never picked her up all the way off the floor before, although he had leaned down so their faces were closer together as they hugged before. she was giggling so hard, now, that she barely even noticed, her legs instictively grabbing onto Royce’s middle for balance. he spun her around, both of them giggling with glee and releif. their nosed bonked togther. Addy didn’t even care. she was just so happy to be alive, and to see Alder was alive, even if he’d looked half dead when they hauled him out of there.
“you know i don’t drink.” a long running joke, so much. they were unlikely friends, that was for sure. a bartender who rarely wanted coffee and a barista who didn’t drink. but in the last two years, they’d become near inseparable during the off work hours. she’d taken his sweaters, he’d taken hers… he couldn’t actually WEAR them, they were too small, but he did like to be an asshole. “tell you what. you get champagne, i’ll get tea, and we can go celebrate?” she couldn’t stop the laughter from bubbling up, yet again. “he won! he won! that little stinking rebel won.”
Tumblr media
“Yeah, yeah,” he laughed, already having known she’d refuse the champagne. For someone who spent so much time at the bar, you wouldn’t guess that she didn’t drink – and vice versa for Roy when it came to coffee. “Alright, tea and champagne. What a combo.” His arm rounded her shoulders as they started walking, which he often did. It was nice to have someone he’d been able to grow close to and feel comfortable with during his time in the Capitol. Addy made him happier than he’d been in a long time – it seemed like any time he was with her, he was smiling. It made him a bit apprehensive if he spent too much time thinking about it, but he tried not to.
Roy stopped in his tracks as if suddenly remembering something. “Oh, wait. I almost forgot.” He reached into his pocket with his free hand, keeping his other arm around her shoulder. He pulled out a rock that fit in the palm of his hand, extending it to her. It was painted rather crudely, but legible: it read congratulations, adorned with a smiley face and his best attempt at some trees to commemorate District 7. “It’s a little uglier than the ones you’ve painted yourself, but I thought you’d want to expand the collection.” He looked down at her with a somewhat bashful smile on his face. “I knew you’d win.”

Hyacinth brought her own cigarette back to lips before taking the pen and writing down her cell number before extending the napkin back to him hold in half and pressed between her pointer and middle finger. “For your eyes only.” She winked. “What else are you good at?” She asked genuinely curious. Hyacinth nodded again in understanding before smiling slightly sadly “No, not anymore, I’m afraid but only can make the best of it that I can.” She shrugged before taking another drag from the cigarette. She gave a tight lipped smile as he mentioned that he had watched her Games. She didn’t remember much from the night she had attacked Auri so Hyacinth really hadn’t yet watched her own Games. “You’re further ahead than me, I haven’t watched my Games.” She gave a single slow nod “But I promise you, I’m much more boring in person.” Or she was trying to be boring for Drake’s sake.
Roy took the napkin and tucked it into his front pocket, putting his index finger up to his lips and returning her wink to demonstrate that it’d be a secret. “What else am I good at? Hm.” Not much, honestly. He never had time for hobbies as a child, and even if he did, he had little to choose from at the orphanage. “I s’pose I’m pretty good with a knife. And I’d like to think I’m a pretty good comedian, at times. But I’ll let you be the judge of that,” he said with a laugh.
At this hour, no one else seemed to be coming in to the bar. People were getting all the last minute preparations for the ball done, he assumed. He hopped up to sit on the counter, resting his elbow on one of the beer taps. “You don’t seem very boring to me. At the very least, you’re the best company I’ve had all day.”

Hyacinth nodded approvingly “I like whiskey, then again there’s not really a drink I don’t like.” She smirked before pinning her bottom lip between her teeth as the corners of her mouth curved up. “You’ll have to let me know when you are free.” She reached up on the bar for a napkin “You got a pen?” She asked playfully before her smile faltered slightly at Roy saying he already knew who she was but she tried to recover it quickly. “I guess you’ll just have to make a name for yourself.” She teased before nodding. “I wouldn’t mind it at all. But hey, soon there will be a new shiny Victor for everyone to obsess over instead of me.” She shrugged and took another long sip from her drink before glancing around and extending it out to Roy. “I won’t tell.” She smirked.
Roy handed her a pen and in exchange, she gave him a sip of her drink. He chuckled as he took it, taking a long swig before handing it back to her. “Damn, I’m good at my job. That is delicious.”
He couldn’t help but notice her smile falter when he brought up the Games, and he found himself wishing he hadn’t brought it up. “I don’t think I want to make a name for myself, really – it’s nice flying under the radar. Guess that’s not fully an option for you, is it?” He flicked his cigarette absentmindedly. “But I don’t have too far of a lead. I may have watched your Games, but that doesn’t mean I know you. Or that anybody does. Right?”

Addy was over the fucking moon. she had been technically on shift, but she’d clocked out the moment the finale started. Sparkles, the boy on duty with her, hadn’t minded even a bit. they’d both had a convorsation before the shift. if the finale started and she was working, she was free to go. so she’d left. and now it was over, the capitol anthem was blaring, and Addy was smiling in the corner of the coffee shop, staring blankly at the TV. he’d done it! he’d done it! alder had done it. he’d won the hunger games!! Addy knew she hadn’t done much, but she was too excited to care.
“I knew it.” she spoke quietly, grinning at the person who was sitting in the chair to her left even though her eyes were clearly filled with stars and not with the actual surroundings around her. “what did i say, before the arena? I said he’s like ash. he’s a winner. and… look.” he was. he’d done it. she was giggling, now, as the shock wore off and reality set in. seven had WON!
falling leaves, she was so proud.
Tumblr media
Royce never paid much attention to the Games – until Dahlia’s – but the more time he’d spent in the Capitol, the harder they were to avoid. He’d been paying more attention this year, particularly for the boy from Seven. He knew that Addy was rooting for him, and even though he tried not to root for the Games at all, he found himself jumping out of his chair as soon as he saw the Victor declared.
He already had a smile on his face when he set off to find her; not necessarily because he was happy about the win, but because he knew that Addy would be. As soon as he saw her, Royce spread his arms out for a hug, his grin just as wide. He scooped her into his arms and spun her around in a tight hug before setting her down again, laughing the whole time. “I know, I know. You called it. And he did it!” Roy kept a hold of her arms even after he released her from the hug, beaming at her. He’d only been so happy about a victor once before. He placed his forehead against hers, rubbing her biceps with his thumbs. “What do you say we go celebrate? Champagne?”

Hyacinth watched the bartender begin to make her drink with interest. “What do you like then? Other than beer?”
Hyacinth took the drink and laughed lightly “Maybe some other time when you’re not working we can have a drink together.” She suggested before taking a sip and then making an approving face. “It’s really good, and I’m Hyacinth.”
“Anything, really. Whiskey’s my favorite.” When she seemed to approve of the drink, Roy smiled in return. “I’d love that,” he said in response to her request to get a drink together. He held out his beer for a cheers. “Glad you like it. And I know,” he said with a grin. “Seems unfair that I know everyone around here from the Games, but nobody knows me. I guess I don’t mind it that way, though.” Roy was always wary about bringing up the Games around the mentors, never knowing how they handled the memories. Hyacinth seemed to be keeping her head together well as a mentor, though. “I must say, I didn’t expect you to like the fruity drinks.”

dahliambervale·:
The instinct to lean into his touch surprised her. It just felt right. Even four years later. That was a recurring thought, apparently. How much hadn’t changed during all that time even though they stood in front of each other like strangers. When his hand dropped from her arm, Dahlia’s jaw clenched. She looked up at him again, the look in her eyes almost defiant while he spoke. And as he kept on talking, she could tell he got more and more frustrated again. Feelings welled up in her chest again as well, but she felt more guilt and anxiousness and sorrow more than anything else.
“Do you think it’s that easy?” she forced out between her teeth. “Do you really think if it was that easy to explain that I wouldn’t have done it already?”
Tumblr media
“Well try!” he snapped, pressing his lips together quickly after. He wasn’t sure if he’d ever raised his voice at her until this moment. She was trying hard to keep him shut out, and he could tell. It was like he could actually see the brick walls raising in her eyes. “What’s ever been easy about our lives, Dahlia? When have you ever taken the easy way out? Nothing. Never.”
Roy placed a hand over his eyes for a moment, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Whatever’s happened, whatever you’re thinking, I want you to tell me. If you want me to fuck off forever after that, fine. I won’t bother you again.” His voice broke in the last sentence, and he internally cursed himself for it. “You’re strong enough. I promise.”

dahliambervale·:
She swallowed harshly. No I’m not. Perhaps if he’d been happy, if he’d started a life and forgotten all about her, it would’ve been easier to justify why she’d never come back. If he’d been happy, Dahlia could’ve turned around and left him alone again, because then he wouldn’t have cared.
Like this, however, she was put on the spot. And uncomfortably so. As he continued speaking, Dahlia’s discomfort morphed into a little bit of anger. “You don’t know if I’m happy or not,” she said, sharply. “You don’t know me at all.” She felt tears burn at the back of her throat again and that made her even angrier. Harshly biting down on her lip, Dahlia shook her head and took a step back.
“That,” she stopped to take a shaky breath. “That was in another life. I…” Dahlia shook her head again. The exit of the bar looked sinfully inviting now.
“Don’t,” she quickly said, urgency marking her tone. “Just, don’t. You have no idea.” This was absolute torture. Dahlia felt her carefully built wall crack under his piercing gaze. He’d never looked at her like that. It damn near made her squirm.
“I can’t do this,” she muttered, turning around, away from him and towards the exit.
Tumblr media
You don’t know me at all. He felt that statement hit him right in the chest. It hurt the worst because she was right. So much could change in four years under normal circumstances, let alone theirs. As angry as it was, he could understand it. Dahlia was getting flustered, and all he wanted to do was comfort her. But before he knew it, she was turning to leave.
Royce covered the distance she’d created between them in a few long strides, grabbing her arm. “No. Don’t leave, please– ” he released her arm, but his eyes were full of desperation. His jaw clenched, teeth grinding together for a moment while he tried to gather his thoughts. “You’re right. I don’t know you. And I hate that. I–” a huff of frustration left him as he cut himself off again.
“Please, Dahlia. Just talk to me. You owe me that, okay? You owe me an explanation. Because that wasn’t in another life. It was this one. It was mine. And I know I can’t even dream of what you’ve gone through, but...whatever this is that you’re doing, cutting me off... I don’t understand it.” Roy was exasperated.

As the bartender stepped back Hyacinth rolled herself behind the bar and in passing him, took the lit cigarette from him and brought it to her mouth to take a draw from it. “I want something fruity but will fuck me up.” She announced.
“Hmm, fruity but will fuck you up.” Royce began eyeing the bottles, picking up a few ingredients to make a cocktail he thought he’d like. “I’m not really a fan of the fruity stuff,” he said, looking over her shoulder at her as he mixed her drink. “Gives me a headache.”
He handed her a drink, adding a cherry on top as he did so. “Careful. Lots of rum in there, even though you can’t taste it. Wish I could join you in partaking in something a little stronger, but I have to at least pretend I’m sober. ” His drink, a simple beer, seemed dull in comparison. "I’m Roy, by the way.”
