Clear Comprehension
(sampajanna) in Theravada Buddhism - 02
Clear comprehension (sampajanna)
The Pali word "sampajanna" is made up by the combination of three syllables, "sam" meaning completely,
"pa" meaning specially and "janna" meaning understanding or knowing. Hence, it means a special kind of understanding or knowing which can be described as complete and precise understanding of the reality of all physical and mental phenomena. One comes to this understanding or wisdom by observing all aspects of phenomena from every angle thoroughly and objectively with no associated emotional reactions such as desire or aversion.
Like many other Pali words in the Buddhist teachings,
"sampajanna" has also been a difficult term to be translated into English language to reflect it's true meaning. As a result, it has been described in several English terms such as clear knowing, clear comprehension, full alertness, tull awareness, discrimination, introspection, clear knowledge and thorough understanding of impermanence. Clear comprehension, which is said to give the closest meaning to the term sampajanna and has also been used commonly in the Buddhist literature, is used in this article.
In the Buddhist teachings, the term clear comprehension occasionally appears on its own but in most contexts it is mentioned along with mindfulness (sati) either as two separate terms or as the compound term satisampajanna.
One's awareness of the bodily, verbal and mental actions at any given moment is mindfulness (sati) but, it can be with no proper understanding of the reality of what is really happening. It is the quality of clear comprehension (sampajanna) that gives it a sense of wisdom, understanding or insight.
In his book "The Heart of Buddhist Meditation", Venerable Nyanaponika has defined clear comprehension as "the right knowledge (nana) or wisdom (panna) based on right mindfulness (sati)". The task of clear comprehension is to make all our actions, physical, verbal and mental actions, purposeful and efficient in accordance with actuality, our ideals and the highest level of our understanding.
