Fun fact: here in Brazil it is technically a infraction to "jaywalk" aka walk out of the crosswalk, technically since 1997 but it only was truly ratified in 2019.

BUT a) we have multiple other laws and general legal decisions in place that basically say that doesn't really matter because the pedestrian is and will always be priority until proven otherwise

b) no one not even police followed that law before it was ratified so late into a culture that does in fact prioritize pedestrians.

c) because of that literally everyone has the habit of sometimes crossing the street whenever it is most convinient where there isn't a cross walk, and because police officers and other public service workers also do that even doing that in front of police officers RARELY if ever results in you being fined, because technically they themselves don't want that to happen with them. and because it's just a infraction and not illegal you really only get a fine and unlike a car is not like you have your (equivalent here of) social security number tatted like a tramp stamp for all to see so you can literally just say you don't have it on you and police can't do much about it besides you know what.

It drives me insane how many people dont realise how often they break the law and that if the full force of it was ever applied life would basically be unliveable.
