#mayvinylchallenge by @jennn_erator Day 15: show us your collection/setup! Both of mine are quite reduced from what they were this time last year (I’ve added those pictures as well for comparison)—I moved 2,000 miles and had to prioritize what I took. But thanks to judicious as hell packing and an understanding husband, both are still abundant and bring me much joy. I’ve labeled my shelfie with my personal organization system. Helps me find what I want to listen to, which is all one can ask from a system 😌

One of my Mother’s Day gifts was St Vincent’s new album, which is divine. It’s less ambitious than her previous two, more in line with her 2014 self-titled and Strange Mercy. I absolutely love the high concept albums, but it’s good to hear her in this mode too. She sounds very herself, Bowiesque and as hooky as it is atmospheric.

Vinyl challenge day 14: long time since I’ve listened/random pull. I did the ol’ Discogs shake for random ones, but had to keep retrying to get one I don’t play all the time 😂 This one fits the theme well! I went through a big Hold Steady thing when this one came out… when I go back to them, it’s usually Boys and Girls in America or Stay Positive. But Heaven Is Whenever was my first love, and still an absolutely wonderful album. Seeing them on this tour was incredible, and this album was the soundtrack for the summer between college and starting teaching, a freeing and rightfully anxiety-provoking time.

May vinyl challenge Day 13: favorite solo/side project. Here’s the lineage for one of my absolute favorite artists… we’ve got the original band (The Birthday Party), the solo project (Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds), the side project (Grinderman), and going duo from the solo project (Nick Cave & Warren Ellis).
Only one whole summer to wait through before I can hear the new album :/

As is traditional on this blog, happy Mothers day! This year I’ll highlight the third Mothers, which was the final one of Frank’s backing groups to bear the name. (At least as far as Frank himself calling them that—plenty of concert promoters used it for the rest of Frank’s life for name recognition purposes.) It’s not merely Zappa’s best era, it’s also one of the best groups of humans ever to come together to make music. The constants for this era are George Duke on keys and vocals, Ruth Underwood on marimba and other percussion, and Tom Fowler on bass. Other excellent characters include Napoleon Murphy Brock on vocals and saxophone, other Fowler brothers on brass, and Chester Thompson on drums. From 1973-75, this group made expansive, heavily jazz-influenced rock, and it’s everything. I listen to every bootleg and every show that comes out from this band, because they’re always worth it and there’s always some new revelation.
