slipping her hands in her pockets to give herself something to do, she looked away nervously. “I don’t think so. I haven’t been here long enough to have any enemies. I mean… this time anyway.” she resisted the urge to over explain. the man was a stranger. it seemed silly to be speaking to him now that she thought it through again. sunny looked back at the large scratch on the car as if turning away would somehow change the predicament she was in. as she watched rooney light his cigarette, sunny leaned against the body of her car. her body suddenly felt heavy and exhausted. she wasn’t a smoker by any means but her entire day was now shot to hell. “hey, can I try one?” 

noticing the nervous disposition, rooney quirked a thick eyebrow, smoke dancing from his nostrils. i mean... this time anyway. interesting answer, he’d briefly thought; had she enemies? what did she do? nosey by nature, rooney bit his tongue to hold back any further questions and instead he watched her, analysing the little movements she made; leaning against her car, sighing, fidgeting, until---hey, can i try one?

glancing at his cigarette, the boy paused. try? “never smoked before?” he asked, plucking one from his packet. handing it over to the brunette along with his lighter, he tilted his head. “must’ve been a bad day for you,” rooney concluded, trying to soften the smile on his face.

finally leaving for her break, sunny pulled off her hat and tossed her keys in the drawer. “alright, I’m off,” she called over her shoulder, not showing any concern over the growing line of customers waiting to be seated. she walked out behind the restaurant to her parked car. sunny began to pull the book she was reading from her bag but stopped when she noticed a gigantic scratch down the passenger’s side doors. even though she knew being angry made no sense, sunny couldn’t help it. the car was almost 20 years old, but it was hers. looking left to right for an explanation, any explanation, she turned around and asked the first person she saw, “hey, did you happen to see someone do this?” 

there wasn’t much to do when, now that being an adult and living out in north carolina on his own, most—if not all—of his friends were working, so here rooney was, taking a walk with his airpods in. with his head down and brown, almost puppy-like eyes focusing on his phone, it came as a bit of a surprise when he heard a voice over his music and he lifted his head, brows furrowed slightly as he wondered if the question was directed at him. funnily enough, it had been. “eh,” he spoke, already a small hint of a spanish accent dripping from the beginning of his speech, “i didn’t, no. you made some enemies here?” rooney questioned, a light smirk on his face as he began to light a cigarette that hung carefully from his lips.
