Regent Masterlist Part 15

Was it a cop-out to summon Jazz back to the Far Frozen? Yes. Did Danny particularly care? Nope! 

Jason was comfortable, propped up with a book Ghostwriter who had popped by to personally deliver. How the ghost had known about Jason Phantom wasn’t going to question, but he suspected GW kept an eye on the bookworms that passed through the Realms- or at least those close to the “Royal family”. Phantom wasn’t much for reading, not unless it was space-related, but he enjoyed listening to the Liminal man reading out loud. He had a brash voice, accented with a cadence like those from Crime Alley, but it only underscored the passion he held for reading. Phantom didn’t interrupt him once, not even when the halfa pulled out his ecto-phone and texted Ellie. 

(His little sister was in Kansas, spending time with another clone she’d literally run into.) 

Almost another full day's cycle passed before Phantom realized Jason had fallen back asleep, a book resting open on his broad chest and soft snores coming from the man. 

Yeah, he could see how he and Jazz fit together so well. 

There was just something about the Once-Revenant, a part of what made him Jason, that resonated with the Phantom. It’s what made him talk to the man as Red Hood, feel comfortable enough to stay in his company for so long, trust him with his older sister- the person who raised him. 

(Spent her birthday money to get him those cheap plastic glow-in-the-dark stars.) 

(Taught him how to read.) 

(Held him as the nightmares of his death shook him to his core.) 

(Did not fear him.) 

(Not as Phantom, Danny, or Dan.)

(Loves him.) 

(Mourns him.) 

(He would never tell her, but he understood how Dan could succumb to grief.)

(Jazz was his.)

Safely back in the living Realm and tucked away in Jason’s apartment, Jazz and Danny tried to investigate the bomb- unfortunately there was nothing for them to do but wait. 

On the upside, the Justice League was about to hit the UN full force with all the subtlety of a tsunami and who had front row seats to the drama? 

Yep, the Regent.  Jazz wasn’t exactly thrilled that her presence was requested, even though it was on the path to the desired outcome the Nightingale siblings had fought for, but both her soulmate boyfriend and little brother would be by her side as support.

The abolishment of the Anti-Ecto Acts officially happened at three pm on a dreary Gotham Tuesday. Jazz was cuddled with Jason on his couch, dozing off to his heartbeat as he read Pride and Prejudice for the thousandth time. The comfortable silence they had wrapped themselves in only occasionally broken by Jason turning a page was completely shattered when Jazz’s phone rang with the Ghostbusters theme song. 

“Danny?” Jazz answered surprised, “School isn’t out yet, what’s wrong?” She was greeted by Danny’s heaving cries as he replied. 

“Batman, he- he did it!” Danny sobbed, “He saved us.” 

It clicked then. The Dark Knight had completed the task he was entrusted with by a Spirit of Protection, the Once and Future Star King, and unknowingly kept the promise a ghost made to a young Jasmine Fenton. 

One day my son will stop this. All of this. You only need to be strong. Take care of yourself and your brother. I promise. 

She had waited years for the promise to be fulfilled, the sworn promise of the dead to a living child. Jasmine was a patient soul, but she had still been a child that night in Gotham. 

(The Drs. Fenton believing the stories about a ghostly vigilante patrolling the streets, a never aging child by their side.) (Dragging their children with them. ) (Hungry and cold.) (A dead man who swore his son would end their torment one day.)

(She should’ve known it wouldn’t come fast enough to save Danny.) 

How was she to know the ghost was speaking of the Realms inhabitants, not the abused and neglected children of Ghost Hunters? How was she to know that the hope such a promise kindled wasn’t hers to keep?  Jason wrapped his arms around her, the book set aside and her phone gently taken from her grasp to be put on speaker so they could both talk to her little brother. Danny had dissolved from heaving sobs to muffled hiccups, seemingly now that he’d shared the news with his sister. 

“He really did,” she muttered. “He really did it.” 

(The furry fucker actually did it.) (She’d known that he was going to try, but humans are stubborn creatures.)

A/N: Hi! Welcome to an update for the Regent. Just to be fully transparent with each of my readers - The Regent is still on Hiatus.

I have deleted so much of my writing because I don't like the flow/dialogue/pacing. Original ending thrown out and rewritten twice- still don't care for it. Who knew something other than Angst would be so difficult.

(Not me!)

Having said that, this entry is of course beta'd by the wonderful @meditating-cat who has put up with my random messages.

(In all honesty, I wish I could just skip right to the ending because at least I know 100% I can get it just right....eventually.)

What're your thoughts on the Deaths Dance ship?

Is that Cass/Danny? I feel like that’s Cass/Danny.

I thought their ship name was Dead Silent? But I like Deaths Dance, maybe even more than Dead Silent. Hmm. Is this like the whole Anger Management/Hardcover thing with Jazz/Jason? Because then I 100% am down for a change.

Cass is a hard Bat to write for me personally, so a Deaths Dance pairing by me would be rare. I really enjoy some other works though in the ship, which I already have one or two in my upcoming rec list 2.

For me personally?

They can be either the best of partners, the strongest Allies… or Cass could be the end to Rogue!Danny. There’s something about her that screams ghostly to me in the context of Phantom Lore (Liminal fanons included). I also think that if anyone can understand Danny’s Core-deep desire to protect, to never become his own worst enemy it would be Cass. Afterall, her moral is stronger than Batman. Far as I know, Black Bat killed once (1) and swore to never do so again. There’s an alternate timeline where Batman kills Joker and never stops. Does that ever happen with Cass? Who knows, but I doubt it.

(Jason supposedly preferred that version of Batman)

My favorite Deaths Dance/Dead Silent fic I’ve read (so far) would have to be Full Time Hero, Full Time Disaster by halfagone.

The irony of Lucifer being named MorningSTAR in this scenario will never not be funny.

Is Maize around to witness the chaos of this twink fanboy and her boss? If so, does she find herself mentally adopting the ghosty as a nephew or son despite her better urges? The baby ghost (he’s a king? Doesn’t matter, he’s a baby) needs weapons and training stat. Look at him. He’s pitiful.

Lucifer isn’t much better, not once Maize is involved. Danny is like a feral cat that once you feed them they return because they knew they can get food from you. And the Devil secretly enjoys having someone around that A) knows exactly who he is and B) doesn’t fear him regardless.

Will he ever tell Danny that? No.

The Twink is dragged to a few stores for better clothes however with the excuse of “you can’t be seen looking like that around me Danny”, but of course the scrungly twink blinks and shrugs.

Chloe gets to know Danny through Trixie. Maize is unavailable to babysit one weekend so she asks Danny to cover for her and like the nice kid he is., accepts without a second thought. Having a ghostly babysitter is a lot of fun and Trixie is as safe as she can be. Danny would never. Let anything happen to her. Chloe is not happy that a strange teenager was alone with her daughter, but is won over soon enough. Danny inherited his dad’s blatant respect for kickass women and it shows.

(Lucifer is not jealous how quickly Chloe warms up to Danny, nope, not at all.)

So Lucifer Morningstar, the fourth of the fallen, (retired) ruler of hell, the Devil himself, is a character in DC comics, appearing in the Sandman comics, his own solo run and various other comics

He is absurdly powerful

The thing is, Lucifer still has access to his Divine power, unlike other fallen angels, and is actually more powerful than other angels

What does this mean?

Lucifer was the guy that shaped the matter to create the stars, an ability he still has

Danny’s Wayne adoption bait. The guy that owns the bodega knows it. Everyone and their mothers knows it. Danny, on the other hand, had no clue. To be fair, he had just crash landed in this dimension a week ago and his back was still sore from the weird design the car had.

(It’s only three weeks of homelessness later does Danny realize that he crash landed on the Batmobile. Whoops. Oh well. He’ll blame it on Clockwork if the vigilante asks after repair costs.)

(Bruce, on the other hand, is scouring the streets for this kid the car cams caught- oddly static filled footage- because his mind jumped to the worst case scenarios: a suicidal meta or a meta being threatened or a meta in a trafficking scheme or even worse all three at once and Bruce just can’t because there is a child in danger, he doesn’t have time to sleep.)

Danny rubbed at his back, eyes going watery at the memory. Sure, his wounds have healed over by now but the- heh- phantom pain is no joke. He shuddered, huddling closer to his threadbare hoodie. His only saving grace from getting jumped while walking the streets of Gotham at night is his invisibility and intangibility. Also, he’s floating, so “walking” doesn’t apply to him.

He’s gotta check on the kid he saved yesterday from a mugging, so Danny hurried along to the depilated apartment complex the kid was squatting in. Turning visible and tangible as he turns the corner, Danny glanced around for Amy.

“Danny!”

“Hey, kiddo. Doing alright?”

“Yeah! Come meet my gang!”

Danny felt his eyebrows rise to form Jazz’s exasperated look. Ouch. Waving the pain of losing Jazz away, Danny smiled at the excited girl.

“A gang? I wasn’t aware I was being brought to your almighty group.”

“Yeah! Uh, you actually helped a bunch of us so…”

Danny thought back to all those times he punted crooks away from robbing kids and shrugged. Yeah, what Amy said was likely.

“Kay, kiddo.”

She scowled, and Danny didn’t have the heart to tell her it looked more like a pout.

“You’re just a teenager.”

“Well, you’re a just a kid.”

Danny cackled as she chased him down the street, trying to kick his shins.

Life is good, even if he’s homeless and hungry.

“Jason.”

“Old man.” Jason mocks back, pausing his tasks. He waits as Bruce struggles to put his thoughts and feelings into words.

“There’s… a meta.”

“In Gotham?” Jason tilts back, hands halfway to his guns as a silent offer. Bruce shakes his head.

“A child. In Crime Alley.”

“In my turf?” Jason’s disquieting demeanor quickly swapped to a protective one.

“Trafficking, I think. Male, black hair…”

“Shit. Get Dickwing back here, he’s good with traumatized kids. I’ll go look for him.” Jason’s already moving, mind filtering through the kids he knows might have information to offer.

Bruce nods, shoulders relaxing. Jason smacks down the lump in his throat at the subtle sing of trust. “I’ll get Oracle and Red Robin on it.”

Jason morphs from Jay to Red Hood in one smooth step, helmet firmly placed on his head. He grunts in agreement, slinging his legs over his motorcycle. He roars off, mind half filled with tearing apart whatever traffickers dared to shit near his territory and the other half filled with worry for this possible kid.

Danny, as the Bats become aware of his existence, hands Amy and her kiddie gang a bag of fancy beef jerky.

“Try these with peanut butter, it’s kind of good.”

Amy stares at him, the judgement of an eight year old more piercing than anything he’s ever experienced.

“You’re fucking weird-”

“Language!” He squawks.

“-but sure, whatever you say, boss.”

“Boss?!”

The kids ignores his alarmed face.

Random fact about Revenants?

They don’t always set off Danny’s ghost sense. Jason does because a)he’s not a ‘true revenant’ and b) he’s got corrupted Ecto in his body and is more akin to a strong liminal now. He wasn’t prior to his death.

In life, Jazz was a strong Liminal as well, but being a True Revenant cancels out the liminality, since liminality is supposed to be for the living. And Jazz died a Liminal, Jason didn't.

While Jazz does have Ecto in her body, its neither corrupted (i.e. Pit Waters) or 'contaminating' her in any way. It simply exists in perfect symbiosis with Jazz now.

Its a weird paradox of how the this particular skill of Danny's works, but no ever said it had to make sense.

Does Jazz set off Danny’s ghost sense?

Sometimes, see above. It's less of a 50/50 and more a 90/10 chance. He's only sensed the "Reaper" once and that was when directly confronted. Other times, no. Not from any distance could Jazz be sensed outside that slim 10% chance. Oddly enough, Danny can pick up on strong protective emotions (steeped in rage, rage, rage) at the crime scenes where the eliminated rogues were left to be discovered.

Alternate cause of death?

Originally I wrote that it had actually been Batman who’d killed Jazz, by accident though a life taking makes him consider it murder, but I offer you another.

The GIW come to take Danny and the phrase, “you’ll have to go through me to get to him” is pretty much what happens. Jazz is killed by the GIW.

They yank him from her broken car, Jazz unable to save him thanks to being pierced through with shrapnel, her last word being her Brother’s name before she fully gives into blood loss.

Angst/bittersweet ending for Jazz. Spill.

The ending came to me in a nightmare. I dreamed I was trying to complete a task and while doing so, I was incredibly sad because I knew instinctively that it would be the last thing I ever did.

Once Danny is “safe”, the greatest threats to his life eliminated, his food no longer radioactive, siblings that will have his back and a house that won’t try to kill him…. He is set for a good life.

The moment the Anti-Ecto Acts are demolished and the denizens of the Infinite Realms are added to the Meta-Protection Act, the last thing that was a threat to Danny and the people he cares for, there is nothing more Jazz can do for him. She has to leave the rest up to him and his new family. They might not be perfect, but they do their best to care for each other and that’s all she can ask for.

The exact moment the Acts are demolished, even before it’s made public, Jazz stops what she’s doing, states with a happy smile, “finally”.

…. Before her heart stops. Ceases to beat between one moment and the next, atrophies within seconds. Her body keels over, thumping to the ground with a solid thump. There’s no breath in her lungs, no pulse, no brain activity….

Jazz literally drops dead.

Recently went and read nearly all of your dpxdc fic recs. You mentioned that it could have been longer and you have a fantastic taste in fics, do you by chance have any more recs that didn’t make the list?

I do! The list was edited to make it cleaner due to tumblr having issues with my hyperlinks.

I'm also working on another rec list at the moment, which will be smaller.

I'm currently reading a dead silent fic though: Lex Luthor's ascent from supervillainy to fatherhood by halfagone (Features Danny just casually beating up superman like its just another Tuesday)
