Momdark
From what I have recently discovered this is another piece of Dexter's Laboratory that must have initially started out as the comic but then managed to get animated but not without some changes to the plot direction. Our first major difference is how the two start out.In the animated version we have the matriarch driving home from the store to be greeted by her kids...
Tumblr media
...While Mandark is spying on them from his own lab and wondering how he can get close enough to Dexter in order to destroy him.Which of course leads him to get the idea of disguising as Mama.
The comic however initially leaves us in the dark of how he managed to capture her.The tank she's also being kept in also has a few fishy details.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The disguise montage also had a bit of extra bits as well as a correction of sorts. The comic excludes the bra-wearing and sock stuffing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But both do show off applying the pillow butt which kind of goes out of order in the comic since in the preview panel Mandark put the gloves on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Line delivery stays the same between both interpretations of this shot
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The comic gives us no clear idea of what exactly was happening that Mandark was able to get the upper hand on the mother but the cartoon shows he timed it to sneak up on her when she went to get a grocery bag left behind in the car.So in the cartoon he's just acting like she just returned in the house with that final bag.Dexter and Dee Dee are already in the kitchen doing homework so Mandark uses this chance to try sneaking into Dexter's room...But before he can open the door the father enters the picture and brings up the issue of food.
Tumblr media
The comic differs by having him pick the lock, thinking things are going easy and he could have pulled this scheme off ages ago,and walking upstairs to the door that leads to Dexter's bedroom only to be greeted by the siblings who are now heading downstairs because they want some dinner.
At this point Mandark is freaking out over the fact he needs to make something to eat in order to keep up the act.In both versions he ends up making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches but the cartoon adds the details he was originally supposed to make a chicken pot pie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We soon enough reach the montage where husband/father,son,and daughter are asking for the help of a mother's touch for different tasks. Some of which are nearly identical copies but happening in a completely different order.
The cartoon adds that this is basically how the rest of Mandark's day went until night finally falls.Dexter demands a goodnight kiss from his "mother" which internally Mandark refuses to do but has to go through to not cause suspicion on identity. This segment is also where some of the more drastic changes begin to unroll.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Already disgusted from the fact he kissed Dexter he then comes quick to realize if that's a bedtime ritual then perhaps he can use this as an opportunity to land a smooch on Dee Dee.But she has other plans in mind involving bunnies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But the most drastic change that had to go between the two mediums would in my opinion be THIS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After sleeping it off we get what's more-or-less a few more near shot-for-shot redraws but the comic brings a dog named Dreyfus into the mix who is a different design compared to the dog who we see the family owns when the plot finds its existence convenient. The cartoon also implies Mandark might know how to bake cookies while the comic has him just making sandwiches for everyone again.Every step Mandark gets closer to infiltrating the lab someone's calling on him to do something but in both he eventually has enough minutes to make it behind the bookshelf. Not sure how he was planning to destroy it in the cartoon but the comic shows he brought a mallet in order to smash things up...If it wasn't for the fact he was exhausted so he goes back downstairs and slinks onto the couch where the rest of the family is.
Somehow the statement of "You missed a spot" referring to the wet spot on the coffee table resonates with the real deal so she regains consciousness, breaks free from the tank, and crashes through the house window with mop in hand.Minor identity confusion on who is the "real" mother,Mandark caving in because he's realized he can't hold the act any longer(With the cartoon we also learn Mandark apparently knows how to give a good back massage).
As one final detail differentiating the scripts Mandark mentions he doesn't want to destroy the lab anymore before storming off back to his house.Taking back her official role Dexter's mother asks what the heck that statement about the laboratory was supposed to mean. All he says about it is "I don't know".
Tumblr media
Our final scene in both takes is the trio demanding the actual woman to do some more tasks while she stares towards the reader/viewer.A minor error is in play for the cartoon since her ear has been miscolored as a part of her hair.

How would you write Dexter's Laboratory?
Seasons 1&2 would remain mostly the same. I'd definitely give Mom and Dad actual names (like Jeff and Kathy or something), give Dexter's babysitter, Lisa, more personality, have Dee Dee get punished for her annoyance more often (i.e. in Book Em, Golden Diskette, and Quiet Riot) and do more Justice Friends and Dial M for Monkey skits.
Seasons 3&4 would definitely be changed from being gag focused to story focused. I'd keep the idea of Mandark's parents being hippies as that's such as well as his real name being Susan as that's a genius way to give him a weakness that Dexter could find out and threatened to blow the whistle on if Mandark goes too far. I'd also keep his sister, Lalavava, on board as Dee Dee's frenemy. They get along better than their brothers but maintain a friendly rivalry when it comes to ballet. I'd also do my best to avoid flanderizing the characters by having react to situations as people, not as stupid and annoying characters. I also want they show to end with the ultimate showdown between Dexter and Mandark, where they pilot their labs as giant mechs and duke it out. It would be the true series finale that brings the ongoing rivalry between the 2 geniuses to a close.

More ramblings re: the Dexter Friends Extended Universe
word vomit below the cut, cw: depression and dysphoria mentions, also weed mention but very briefly Mainly to do with Mandark, Surfer Boy, Dee Dee and her friends
So in this universe, which I would say is pretty much my own bubble universe and nothing I would expect as canon, especially since the Powerpuff girls are just There, I've been thinking about how the timeline goes. One of the themes I'm interested in is the idea that people can change and evolve, especially from childhood, and Dexter learning slowly to make his thinking less black-and-white. (He has a real problem in the show thinking in binaries/opposites like "girl things" vs "boy things" and good vs evil even in situations where it doesn't really apply. Very typical kid thing to do and, doubly so with the heavy autism-coding let's be real. Anyways, my bubble universe subscribes to the Trans Mandark theory because we love Applicability in Storytelling, even if accidental. I'm now currently debating when Mandark and Taylor met back up, because Mandark pretty understandably avoided the beach through puberty bc it's a dysphoria nightmare, but I don't think he'd be very comfortable explaining that to people.
So I'd imagine Mandark avoided him, not knowing how to handle stuff and feeling deeply embarrassed and awkward, and the fact they go to different schools would make this easier. I'm debating whether they stay in contact via text/skype as was the style at the time, I'm thinking yes, but Mandark does not want to meet up in person because he has horrendous self-esteem at this point, you know - being 15 and all that - and doesn't want to be perceived by this very cool person that gives him confusing feelings. Taylor remains kind of hung up on this boy that gave *him* funny feelings and Marie teases him about his 'imaginary boyfriend' they've never met.
I am thinking Goo's parents and Mandark's parents probably are aquaintences because they seem to be part of the same very hippy-dippy crowd (Goo's parents being less intense and giving her more actual free expression, but not realizing she's lonely), so she probably knows Mandark through that and likely getting put in a Gifted Class or two together in High School. (It's the 2000's so I can't imagine Goo gets diagnosed as ND even though she clearly is, lmao) Dee Dee would also probably be friends with Nazz as Popular girls who Do Sports, but like - casual friends. They don't necessarily hang out in the same group all the time but will be the connector piece for several smaller groups to hang out together and go to parties. Dee Dee's besties in highschool are Goo and Bubbles who are extremely like... colourful and energetic and Nazz has Alt Girl stoner vibes (since childhood, irrespective of actual weed being involved) so they're quite different but have this mutual respect, you know? So Nazz's main group is Taylor and Marie (maybe I will think of others), and both her and Dee Dee also can command a crowd of others for parties etc with their popularity. So, if Dee Dee is having a RAWR XD scene girl party, Goo asks if she can bring her friend from her AP classes, Dee says sure and it ends up being mandark in the middle of his Emo phase - he gets extremely embarrassed over his past behavior and spends the night hiding from Dee Dee who is oblivious to all this. Nazz turns up with her skater crew and, in his efforts to hide from Dee Dee, Mandark walks straight into Taylor who is HYPED to see him. Eventually, Mandark and Dee Dee mend fences and strike up a tentative friendship through Goo, but Dee Dee is at first still pretty sus about him, and in fairness she has every right to be. Dexter also still sees Mandark as his arch-nemesis despite this kid getting hit with depression like a ton of bricks. But he has an 'evil aesthetic' according to Dexter so he must be plotting something dark. This actually spurs Dee Dee to befriend him more because she hates Dexter telling her what to do, and they bond over their terrible, terrible poetry. Bubbles probably becomes closest to him because she's a sucker for taking in wounded animals and he has wet cat energy, that and their music tastes overlap a wild amount. (Bubbles is a huge System of a Down fan) - Bubbles also feels like she can let out her Dark Side around this emo friend of hers, in a way her sisters would usually laugh at, and Dee Dee and Goo don't always know how to relate to. Like yeah Dee and Goo feel sad and angry sometimes, but Bubbles has this real issue since she was little of no one taking her seriously, and treating her like a little insipid baby, and it ties into how Mandark's parents treat him.

FusionFall Headcanons: Character Ages
From taking the canon ages of the various CN characters within their own shows into account to people noticing the... liberties, the game took to some of the designs for them in the game, I’m well aware that this is going to be a point of debate.  Still, after some consideration, I’d like to cross reference some of these points to come up with at least a general sense of where these characters may be/have been in their lives.  I probably won’t come up with specifics--moreso early/late this or that--for the ages.  Now, I will bring up puberty a bit in this--definitely not heavily, but it is mentioned--so keep that in mind.
Dee Dee, Dexter, and Mandark
For these characters, I view Dee Dee, Dexter, and Mandark being in their late teens-early 20′s.  We already know based on evidence from the show that Dee Dee is Dexter’s older sister by just a few years while Dexter and Mandark are only about two years apart themselves (as implied by concept art for “Ego Trip” as explained on the Dexter’s Laboratory wiki).  It’s possible that Dee Dee might have at least a year over Mandark and/or for Dexter and Mandark to be the same age, since he is in Dexter’s class as far back as elementary school, but we also have to consider the high possibility that he was held back due to his parents’ lifestyles keeping him from going to school during his early childhood.
Since Dee Dee lives alone at their old family home and it’s already established that her and Dexter’s parents live up on the house on top of Dexlabs, she’s likely already an adult.  She probably looks after the home not only for security purposes, but due to the massive success of Dexlabs making their family wealthy enough to maintain it and for her to live there despite being fairly young--meaning she wouldn’t have to get a dorm if she chose to go to college or something similar, but still has the liberty of living on her own. Based on how she continues to wear her dance outfit, her maintaining a slim physique similar to professional ballet dancers, and that she still goes to recitals as evidenced in “Dee Dee’s Dilemmas (Part 3)”, it’s also likely that she either studies dance or may even teach it to small children.
What makes me think Dexter and Mandark are in their older teens is how much of a foothold their companies have during the events of the game, enough so for their tech to be everywhere.  It’s possible that their genius gave them a leg up enough to quit high school and form their companies early, but they’d still need a few years to build and develop them to the extent we see.
Numbuhs 1-5
For the operatives to still be viewed as official members of the KND (at least to public knowledge), this would mean that they’d have be younger than 13, so they’d be in their tweens.  Given the extent to which the war has altered the KND’s operations, however, they may even be a little older--just with their decommissioning being the farthest from anyone’s mind at the time.  We also know that at the group would remain a part of the KND well into adulthood based on the series finale as the issue stands, supporting this.
Furthermore, for Numbuh One to lead an operation in the war so far from the rest of not only his team, but other parts of the KND, as well as seeing him work with Plumbers like Grandpa Max, it’s possible that the war may take place after the events of the KND finale would--after Numbuh One would’ve experienced space-travel for himself through the G:KND, an expansion of the KND in sequel series that was never aired.  What could also hint to the war being post-G:KND is the mention of bases within Earth’s solar system besides the moonbase--which the KND lose contact with in the official FusionFall comic, but were never mentioned in the actual show.  All of this further points to a passage of time at which the operatives would be a little older than their original depictions, which already averaged at around 10 years old.
The Powerpuff Girls and the Gangreen Gang
Well, I’m gonna go ahead and say that the girls aren’t five unless the developers of FusionFall took a page from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure in their character designs.  We also have the presence of Pokey Oaks Middle School in-game as opposed to Pokey Oaks Kindergarten from the show, acting as a subtle clue that the girls are at least middle school age within the FusionFall universe, but I’d like to take that a step farther:
In the show, we were given a general age range for the Gangreen Gang at 14-17 years, with Ace being the oldest and Lil’ Arturo extending that approximation according to his wiki page with a personal age range of 10-14 years.  In FusionFall, we’re given aged-up versions of the girls, but not from what we can tell of the Gangreen Gang.  Still, even if the ages are different, we have to take into the account the likelihood that the group is at least slightly older themselves as, in a sense, they have grown up a bit: They’ve moved on from most of their criminal ways to form a successful band, which couldn’t have happened in too short a time.
The point above, combined with the possibility given of Buttercup and Ace being in a relationship despite the massive age gap between their TV Show counterparts unless the OG developers had a, ahem, questionable idea of relationships like the kind the PPG reboot has gained attention for, make me think that the girls might be at least in their mid-teens in Fusionfall while the Gangreen Gang and in their late-teens or early 20′s.
Samurai Jack
Following the route the fifth season took, even if it was made after the game, I’m going to say that Jack is ageless due to the effects of time travel.  Whether or not Season Five can be taken into consideration as far as Jack’s backstory would go in Fusionfall, it works more for the game that he be this nigh-immortal adversary to match Aku.  First off, let’s say that the events of S5 were a part of the game lore: That would mean that, at some point, Jack did defeat Aku, went back to the past, and eventually time passed to reach the events that FusionFall would take place in with Aku potentially coming back in that timeframe similar to how he did after the Emperor first defeated him--only this time, Jack’s constantly ready to take him out again before he can reach full-strength. More likely though-- given that people still remember how Jack defeated Demongo--the timeline hasn’t been altered (barring that he didn’t defeat him a second time within the new timeline that we’d be unaware of).
Now let’s talk about it without S5: We already know that Aku isn’t the main villain here: Fuse is.  Aku’s barely a blip on the radar in the game, mentioned moreso as a potential threat if he ever came out of hiding.  Emphasis on if.  This is weird given that, in Jack’s show, Aku’s already taken over the world.  There is no ultimate evil beyond Aku, but that’s just not the case in FusionFall’s history.  Instead, Jack takes both Fuse and Aku as serious threats, placing his priorities on the former only because he’s the most present.  For Jack to set aside his life’s purpose to help battle Fuse, that has to mean he feels comfortable enough with his chances against Aku.  Not to mention the state of the world looks pretty ok beyond the threat of Planet Fusion, meaning it’s more likely that Jack has already defeated Aku at some point prior to the events of the game, but for some reason chose to stay in the future and continue his long-standing battle with him.  I know this cuts out S5′s rationale behind Jack himself being ageless, but bringing that idea into this as well fits with the context of this eternal battle between a hero and villain, two people who can embody an ultimate good and ultimate evil.
Ben 10 Trio
Given that the gang looks exactly like their Alien Force counterparts, this is pretty much a given.  I doubt they’re that different in an age range with the exception of maybe a couple year: It would depend on how much context you’d take from Ultimate Alien.  That would put Ben and Gwen at 15-16 while Kevin would be 16-17 years old.
Ed, Edd, and Eddy Characters
The characters in Ed, Edd, and Eddy already went to junior high in the show, placing them at least in their tweens.  Granted, they still look like kids in the show while some of them seem to be a little older in the game.  For example, the Kankers look more aged up than the Eds do, fitting both a passage of time and following the fact that girls tend to develop at a faster rate than boys (growth spurts, brain development, etc.) during puberty.  It’s possible that they’re still in their tweens or early teens, with some of them being in their first year of high school within the world of FusionFall.
Billy and Mandy
Although Billy and Mandy were still in elementary school in their show as opposed to middle school, I’d place them in their tweens following the same logic I pointed out with the Kankers and Eds regarding development.  Mandy looks like she’s still young, but has hit puberty, while Billy looks very much like a kid.  They’re likely in middle school.
Frankie and Mac
Considering that Mac was only 8 in the show and still looks pretty young in the game, he’s probably still a kid.  Maybe he’s aged up a little, but definitely hasn’t reached his teens just yet.  He’s still got his baby face.
In the show, Frankie was 22 years old, and like Mac I don’t think she’s aged much, so still in her early-mid 20′s. She’s probably devoted herself to running Foster’s Home much like her grandmother.
Juniper Lee
While she was 11 in the show and the game doesn’t seem to have altered her design too much, I still get a feeling she’s more of a teenager--early-mid teens--in the world of FusionFall.  She just strikes me as being a little more mature, more experienced with her powers and all of the forces she’s dealt with after a while as a the Te-Xuan-Ze.
Coop
Probably mid-late 20′s.  He was already an adult in the show, but he doesn’t seem to have matured enough to have passed far into his 30′s.
Flapjack
He’s 7 in the show and based on his personally and appearance in the game, he’s still probably close to the age.  Maybe just a little older, but the same situation as with Mac.
 Ami and Yumi
(Mentioning them since Retro gave them a cameo and I loved this duo as a kid) The show’s wiki places them both at 13.  Their FusionFall counterparts don’t look much older, so they’re probably still in their teens--possibly just a few years older in we wanted to account for time for them to develop as young teen idols.

/if mod was able to write an episode for the original dexter what kind of episode would you write?/
Tumblr media Tumblr media
;; HALLOWEEN EPISODE. we got a christmas episode from the original seasons, & a ST. patrick’s day-esque episode from the savino seasons & that was it, & you could say tht ‘ filet of soul ‘ might have been the unofficial ‘ halloween episode ‘ for the second season but I will not buy it !!!!! we were robbed !!!!!! we’ve got a scientist with a secret lab at his disposal, we couldn’t have done something with it to make it spooky? I had an idea for such a ep once: dexter finds a storebought costume to be too lame for his tastes, so he decides to try altering it / making his own - which backfires & turns EVERYONE on halloween night into their costumes ( like dressed were-wolves become ACTUAL were-wolves, dressed vampires were ACTUALLY vampires - so on so forth ) & he has to reverse it before things really go to hell, OR - it backfires on him alone & transforms him into his costume & DEE DEE has to be the saving grace in order for the holiday not to be ruined. ( think ‘ the laughing ‘ but Halloween Time Now )
Tumblr media
;; that’s just a couple ideas for THAT concept, but otherwise? I can’t think of too many ideas that I would incorporate myself into the original season!
;; uhhh dexter being gay, that’s what I want in an ep, give him a boyfriend. SERIOUSLY SPEAKING, I would have preferred a LOT more mandark in the early seasons; even as a dexter stan, I can admit that he didn’t get as much spotlight as he deserved & the savino seasons didn’t give him much in the way of decent spotlighting. maybe something with him & dexter where they admit ‘ truce ‘ up until the very end where SOMETHING goes wrong & they’re back to fighting again ( probably more of a filler ep than anything TOO serious, but that would have been nice to see! ).
;; & concerning mandark, I would have loved to see genndy’s take on mandark’s backstory; what got him into science, what his family’s like & such, an episode that isn’t just giving the poor boy the end of the shit stick. I mean SERIOUSLY, ‘ a boy named sue ‘ was one big joke setup to a very unfunny punchline. maybe the hippie concept could have been done better even in genndy’s hands, but as it stands ???? not great.
;; & furthermore, what’s really unfortunate is that a lot of savino directed episodes could EASILY be translated into the style that the earlier seasons had & still work majestically. if I could write an episode, I would use something similar to the plot of ‘ school girl crushed ‘ & translate it into something I could see genndy writing. THAT episode in particular has a lot of weight to it! rivals teaming up against an even bigger rival, wow !!!!
;; getting ahead of myself here, but I don’t have too many ideas for episodes at the very moment! ( at least nothing that could work in the same style of the show, really ) though I can’t say any of MY ideas could really enhance ???? what’s already been made of the original series, I like it just as it is & think all the plots were, you know - what they could do !
