some thoughts, partially a vent, but-

i love the fanart with chongyun and gaming. i ADORE it. i think they'd be cute together and i really want there to be canon interactions. i hope people keep making fanart cause i'd be so down for that.

what i don't like is how xingqiu is being portrayed. it's starting to feel less like a trio of friends hanging out and more like chongyun isn't allowed to do anything without xingqiu. and it's going back to that whole "chongyun is an accessory to xingqiu's life."

honestly it kinda gives me a tiny bit of ick. i feel like treating xingqiu as the jealous/possessive ex is doing all three characters a disservice. chongyun is his own person and is allowed to make friends. wouldn't xingqiu want to encourage that, especially when he has friends from all over too? it feels weird to think that he'd want to isolate chongyun.

and gaming hasn't even been released yet and people are acting like he's swooping in to steal something from xingqiu and idk.

can't the three of them just actually vibe together? a trio of friends or a cute polyship, i'll take either option, but whatever is going on now, i'm not interested in writing chongyun that way.

there was a reason i put a huge emphasis on chongyun being his own person on his old blog, i'm not revisiting this argument. he's not property of xingqiu OR gaming.

coming here to talk about arlecchino, my queen.

may contain spoilers or leaks or something but i have thoughts.

my first thoughts are about her animation. I KNOW IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE THE OG TIMELINE because of scaramouche being there. but i saw a theory on twitter the other day that had me thinking about potential theories, and i thought they'd be fun to discuss. namely, if this was her remembering the past and scaramouche is there, then she potentially remembers who he is. i like this theory, i may adapt this to my own portrayal. and perhaps for her own reasons, i can see her keeping this shit to herself for her own reasons. which means she can and would just pretend like she has no idea who he is overall. it makes it feel more fun.

AND HER VOICELINES.

saint showed me the video last night and specifically pointed out the one about dottore. and BOY did i get excited. because that's exactly EXACTLY what i thought would be the case! she works with him and basically trades children that give her zero potential to him for experimentation. i HAD A FEELING that was the case. she is the kind of person that prides herself on her own work, and the perfectionism of it, and she loves that she can whip these orphans into shape and have them be loyal as fuck toward her and the fatui. she's also the kind of person shady enough to be like "here dottore, this one won't listen. perhaps you can whip them into shape."

SHE IS ALSO NOT HEARTLESS. god the amount of shitty/garbage takes i've seen over the course of months about how she doesn't give a shit about anyone because she's a harbinger, she's a villain. GROSS.

arlecchino isn't a good guy, no. she has her own agenda, obviously, but her voice line about childe PROVES she has a heart. she DOES care about people in her own way, she doesn't see everyone as disposable. people in this fandom are way too fucking quick to put someone in a black and white box and refuse to see nuance and anything in between and it's just tiresome at this point.

arlecchino is not a soft person, she definitely does morally bankrupt things without thinking twice over it. but she's not completely heartless either. she has a beating heart still and she does know how to use it. it's not a complete act either. we know she cares about her children. at least, about freminet, lynette and lyney. and we know she does care somewhat about childe. i knew she cared about him when she was the one who initially went to investigate his disappearance in fontaine.

she is a complex person and i am LIVING for it. i love this woman and i am so excited for her release. i have saved up for months and burnt myself out in the process, but WORTH IT cause she's literally right around the corner and HHHHHH.

anyway. i want to write her.

a note about my chongyun portrayal, that hasn't changed from his old blog:

my chongyun is an adult. blog canon, he is 20 years old. the REASONS i made him older are because if you count the events in game as canon (which i do because they're lore heavy), then the characters are having birthdays and growing older. if at base, chongyun started at 16/17, then he'd be solidly an adult at this point. plus, canon ages are never stated, and i don't like it's treated as canonical fact that he's minor coded, when to me he seems more autistic over anything.

I'm also going by his career. i know it's common where the children (klee, diona, for ex) run around on their own without adult supervision. but chongyun also has an established career and fame to him that requires him to be away from home for days at a time. he rarely talks about his parents. while by itself that isn't really proof enough, for me personally, it tells me that chongyun is old enough to be entrusted with this kind of dangerous job. hes actively walking into danger and having to make decisions to get himself out in one piece.

i also chose to disregard some of his more naive personality shown in the game. the game doesn't give him all that much to begin with, and even if you don't count the passage of multiple years, time still passes, chongyun would have his matras memorized more, and he'd be less naive to the pranks xingqiu pulls on him. i would rather write chongyun as more street smart and intelligent overall, which is why i gave him the personality he does.

as a result, an adult chongyun would pick up on more suggestive humor, play into it himself, and see people for who they are. he's not blind to the harsher side of the world, he's snarky and passive aggressive, and knows what's what.

i really do not like chongyun, at least my portrayal of him, being treated like a child. i am not asking for ships (yes i am), but i am asking for base respect in that chongyun isn't treated like his game counterpart and given the "little brother" treatment, at least not without discussing it with me first.

i put so much thought and care into a massively underrated 4* and i get unreasonably irritated when all my work is dismissed and disregarded. when i say i love chongyun and have studied him, I mean exactly that.

if you're willing to interact with my chongyun, and YOU SHOULD!!, then please do not jump to kiddy mode. he is not a child, i did not pick his age lightly. it came from years of writing him and finding exactly what works for me and what in-game needed to be fixed.

tl;dr: my portrayal of chongyun is 20 years old. if you treat him like a minor i am side eyeing you.

this is about the animated short over the actual story quest, but i'm going to spoiler this anyway because i have QUESTIONS.

i talked to some friends about this last night, but i am still very curious/confused about the timeline of it all. or more specifically, about how the harbingers are actually ranked. if it's by strength instead of when they were recruited, that could make sense, but i'm STILL confused.

because when pierro is giving arle the title, we see two people who are lower ranked than her in the background.

that is a harbinger cloak, i'm assuming. they don't get those cool clothing upgrades until they reach the rank of harbinger, right? and while i know arl is the second knave and probably inherited her rank overall, i'm still confused.

why only show pierro, scaramouche, signora and capitano in the scene? why not all the harbingers that had been recruited at this point? were they not all present at that time? or are the numbers arbitrary and the scene has nothing to do with the actual rankings/recruitment order?

there are probably a lot of logical reasons why these specific harbingers were there when arle was given her new title, but at the core of it, it all still doesn't make sense to me. and realistically it's probably just "let's give the fans these two ex harbingers in their cloaks as a treat."

but STILL. the timeline makes no sense to me and i can't wrap my head around the rankings/order of recruitment or anything. welcome to hoyoverse, where everything is made up and the timelines don't matter.
