I made kakuni, or braised pork, or any of the many names that this dish is called in many different culture.
Could not find any pork belly with skin so it is so different from how mom made it. I used to hate this when I was a kid. It is always so freaking fatty. Dad loves it, cause that was how his mother made it. As for me, I would only want the egg.
Our eating style is communal style, each person have their own bowl of rice, and there are dishes set in the middle that everyone can take from. There are a bunch of rules, like how you cannot take from the plate directly to your mouth, you have to put it on your bowl of rice first; or you have to say 'invite' to whoever is older than you at the table before the meal.
Another rule is that you cannot pick through the plate to get the part that you like. Every time mom makes this, I would wait for others to take the pork until the egg is visible enough to be considered 'not rude' to take it up.
