So, in Brazilian politics and possibly fishy news, president Jair Bolsonaro allegedly kept boxes stacked with cash at home.
Tumblr media
The claim comes from the book "Jair's business: The forbidden history of the Bolsonaro clan", by journalist Juliana Dal Piva, which arrives in bookstores in September with new revelations and details about Jair Bolsonaro's relationship with André Siqueira Valle, the former brother-in-law fired from Jair’s office for not returning the portion of his salary that the then-deputy demanded.
In the book, the author describes the ex-advisor’s annoyance with boxes full of cash that he saw inside Jair Bolsonaro’s mansion, in Rio de Janeiro, during the period in which he lived with the now president and his sister Ana Cristina Valle while they were married. The book, already on pre-sale, states that André resented having only 10% of his salary and having to give all the rest back to Bolsonaro (a corruption scheme labeled ‘rachadinha’, in which deputies hire staff on the condition that they return part of their salaries), and that other employees also saw large amounts in cash at the couple's residence.
An excerpt from the upcoming book:
André followed the agreed routine, but he didn't like to hand over so much money to his brother-in-law. He began to vent to friends, in secrecy, that it was wrong. And he carefully observed some boxes of cash the couple kept at home.
On one occasion, he said: "Gee, you have no idea what it's like. Any money comes in? You just see Jair destroying a bundle of it. 'Take it, take it, take it'. A bunch of boxes of cash there [in the house]. You go crazy".
Whoever frequented that house couldn't ignore so much money. Marcelo Nogueira also saw many banknotes there. The couple kept a safe in their bedroom, which was well stocked during election campaigns.

Indian-American rapper Raja Kumari to pay tribute to Amy Winehouse
A star-studded tribute in memory of late English singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse is slated to livestream on July 23 that will assemble a line-up of both established and rising artists to pay homage to the Grammy-winning music legend on the 10th anniversary of her passing.
Titled ‘Back To Amy’, the three-hour "festival style" event will emanate from City Winery Nashville, the site of a new physical exhibit dedicated to Winehouse, and is a collaboration between MusiCares Foundation, the philanthropic partner of the Recording Academy, and the Amy Winehouse Foundation. The show will include performances from the Nashville venue, recordings from around the globe, and spoken-word dispatches from other musicians.
The once-in-a-lifetime showcase in celebration of Winehouse's legacy will feature performances by rocker Chris Daughtry, Nashville-royalty Ana Cristina and John Carter Cash, Broadway’s Joshua Henry, UK rising star Zola Courtney, St. Louis indie rockers Hounds, Nashville-based singer/songwriter Young Summer, Los Angeles-based musician-model Cailin Russo and Cuba’s Sweet Lizzy Project and newcomer Riley Clemmons. All performing artists will be sharing new recordings with a message of promoting positive mental health as part of the tribute.
Marking a monumental moment of sorts for the Indian diaspora of Winehouse fans, will be GRAMMY-nominated rapper and singer-songwriter Raja Kumari, who is confirmed to feature on the eclectic performance line-up. The multi-platinum artist who has painstakingly carved a distinct reputation for herself in the global music industry with her revolutionary art form says, “I am so honored to be supporting mental health awareness at Back To Amy with MusiCares® and the Amy Winehouse Foundation. This is a topic that is really important to me. I’ve been in therapy for the last year and it’s thoroughly changed my life. I try to talk about it as much as I can because it’s kind of taboo in my culture and people don’t want to get help when they really need it. As musicians especially in the last two years I think our mental health has come to the forefront. Join me in supporting this important cause as we celebrate art, music, empowerment, and Amy's legacy.”
Executive producer Gabriel Gornell whose recent live-stream credits include Lollapalooza 2020, expressed “Amy’s fan base is so passionate; they’re still wanting a connection and I couldn’t be more excited than to present them with this celebration. I’m extremely grateful to each of the performers who lend their unique touch, worthy of this celebration of Amy’s legacy. I’m equally proud that this benefit celebrates inclusivity and diversity and this is a live stream with purpose.”
Exhibit creative director Charles Moriarty adds on, “Back to Amy is such a great opportunity to showcase some incredible talent from both sides of the Atlantic. There was a time when Amy spent weeks in the back of cars going radio station to station slowly sharing her voice with the country. Now with new technology, we can take that introduction of fresh, young and vibrant voices to a new level.”
The live stream will be presented by Mandolin, City Winery, and Qello Concerts by Stingray. Proceeds from the event will be split between The MusiCares® Foundation and the Amy Winehouse Foundation to support mental health awareness.
Additionally, all ticket-buyers will receive a unique code to access six more Amy Winehouse titles on Qello Concerts for a limited time. The six titles include “Live Eurockeennes de Belfort”, “The Legacy”, “The Final Goodbye”, “Live At Porchester Hall”, “Live In London: I Told You I Was Trouble”, and finally, “The Day She Came To Dingle”.
Prior to the announcement of the ‘Back To Amy’ exhibit and livestream, an NFT auction was announced in May 2021 to mark the celebrations of the life and career of Amy Winehouse. This NFT is currently on display within the immersive 3D NFT Decentraland exhibit. All proceeds from the sale of the first NFT—a rare pic of Winehouse shot by photographer Charles Moriarty at age 19 in New York and animated in comic-strip style by visual artist Mark Palkoski—are earmarked for MusiCares® and the Winehouse Foundation. The NFT, the first MusiCares® has been involved with, also marks the world’s first-ever philanthropic NFT. A second NFT, also a Moriarty photograph of Winehouse, is slated to release on the day of the event.
After Amy Winehouse's untimely death, on 23 July 2011 from alcohol poisoning at the age of 27, her family established the Amy Winehouse Foundation to inspire young adults to build their self-esteem and resilience.
MusiCares Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 1989 and incorporated in 1993 by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. It has provided more than $60 million in health, financial, and rehabilitation resources to music people in times of need. A friend and ally of the music community, MusiCares was established to safeguard the health and well-being of all music people. A four-star charity and safety net in times of need, MusiCares offers confidential preventative, recovery, and emergency programs to address musicians' financial, medical, and personal health issues.

DevilDriver announce outlaw country covers' album Outlaws 'Til The End
Official press release: Globally renowned, chart-topping band DevilDriver may be one of the most notable groups in metal, but their personal taste in music reaches far beyond heavy music. Let’s get this out of the way: this documentary is not a film about Los Tigres del Norte. The band is there as a catalyst, setting in motion a story about the inmates of Folsom, a prison that has been mythologized in song and record. The event has a specific tie to the legendary show Johnny Cash gave 50 years before, but by the time the credits roll, this will be on the back of your mind. The main story is much more powerful.
Directed by Tom Donahue and written by Zach Horowitz and Los Tigres themselves, the film follows the lives of a handful of prisoners as they recount their story and their relationship with the music of the norteño legends. The inmates talk candidly about their situation for being committed and their hopes and dreams, some of which remain in their minds, and others which are long gone. As they recount their stories, they are matched by songs from Los Tigres’ two sets at Folsom, many dealing with immigration and violence, as they have long since dedicated their musical output to subjects dealing with real-life of Mexicans on both sides of the border.
As each story gets told, we begin to see a bigger picture of what the documentary’s thesis is. Many of the people interviewed had turned to crime because of their place in society – namely being poor and undocumented. Drugs and guns prove to be a common denominator in many of these people’s stories, and many of them end up in prison because something in their lives had gotten out of hand. While none of the inmates deny their involvement in some serious crimes, we come to understand how they were shaped to take the road that led them behind bars. At the core of the documentary is the notion that humans are equal and even the most severe of crimes don’t have to mean the end of someone’s life through incarceration. One subject that keeps coming back through these testimonies is family – how the actions of these individuals have damaged their own people and how they wish they could undo it for the sake of their loved ones. It’s heavy and quite emotional.
As stated, Los Tigres Del Norte themselves are not the focus of the doc, but there’s an aspect of their music that takes center stage throughout At Folsom Prison. One of the biggest qualities of Los Tigres’ music is their talent for narrative lyrics that convey not only relatable situations; their songs become living art entities that shine through with poetic flair even at its most realistic. The way songs like “La Jaula de Oro,” “La Bala,” and “La Baraja Bendita” unfold a story working charmingly in the film, not only reflecting the stories told by the prisoners but also the way they take a new life when heard through people who have lived similar situations.
Of course, for the musically curious, the centerpiece of the film is “Prisión de Folsom,” the cover of the famous Johnny Cash song. The song was translated and adapted with the help of singer-songwriter (and wife of Johnny Cash’s son, John Carter Cash) Ana Cristina, making it as typical and extraordinary as any of the Tigres greatest hits. It brings to mind the similarities between the sensibilities of Cash’s songwriting and country music with norteño and Los Tigres del Norte.
Los Tigres Del Norte At Folsom Prison is a story about how things change and how they also stay the same, but mostly it’s a story of the darkness of humanity and the light can come through at any moment.

Here’s a quick take on how Startup Battlefield works:
During three preliminary rounds, up to five startups per round will each have six minutes to pitch and present their demo before a panel of expert tech and VC judges. The judges have six minutes following each pitch to ask teams probing questions. Five of the competing startups will move on to the finals and pitch again to a new set of judges.
The judges confer and will declare one startup to be Latin America’s first Startup Battlefield champion. The winning founders receive a $25,000 non-equity cash prize and a trip for two to the next Disrupt, where they can exhibit free of charge in the Startup Alley — and possibly qualify to participate in the Startup Battlefield at Disrupt.
Between rounds, we have an amazing cast of speakers on tap — founders, investors and startup experts who’ve all been busy shaking up the region’s startup scene.
You’ll hear from a bona fide Brazilian unicorn when Nubank founder and CEO David Vélez and co-founder Cristina Junquiera sit down with us to talk about disrupting big banks, securing funding and both the opportunities and challenges facing early-stage startups in Latin America.
