A Dramatic Performance by Juilliard Students Brings a Socially Distant Approach to Ravel’s Boléro
May 4, 2020 Grace Ebert
Maurice Ravel’s Boléro is a particularly collaborative composition in that it passes the melodic theme through a series of solos. The sequential performances highlight the distinct tones and sounds of each instrument, whether it be a flute, violin, or the anomalous saxophone. In a spectacular new project, dozens of Juilliard students who now are quarantined in their respective homes bring a socially distant approach to the classic orchestral composition. What makes it especially impressive, though, is not just appearances by famous alumni—watch for Yo-Yo Ma, Laura Linney, Patti LuPone, and Itzhak Perlman—but because it coordinates the instrumental piece in addition to a range of dramatic and choreographed elements that appear to transcend individual frames.

My favorites of the things that Erasmus & Thomas More wrote to/about each other
"But, joking apart, dearest Thomas, I ask you to cure, adding a bit of interest, the sick mood that I have caught from yearning too long for yourself and your letters. Really what I am looking for is not a single letter but a huge bundle of correspondence, such as might break the back of an Egyptian porter."
— Erasmus to Thomas More, October 28, 1499; translated by R.A.B. Mynors and D.F.S. Thomson. This letter is the earliest surviving piece of correspondence between them.
"Did Nature ever create anything kinder, sweeter, or more harmonious than the character of Thomas More?"
— Erasmus to Robert Fisher, December 5, 1499; translated by R.A.B. Mynors and D.F.S. Thomson.
"I regard [Thomas More] with such affection that, even if he ordered me to join the rope-circle and dance, I should obey him without hesitation."
— Erasmus to Richard Whitford, May 1, 1506; translated by R.A.B. Mynors & D.F.S. Thomson. This letter forms the dedicatory preface to Erasmus' declamation in reply to Lucian of Samosata's Tyrannicida. The declamation is a part of the Luciani opuscula, a collaborative translation work by both Erasmus and More.
"[M]y delight in the thought of you when you were absent was like the pleasure I used to take in your company; my life upon it if I have ever in my life enjoyed a sweeter experience than that."
— Erasmus to Thomas More, June 9, 1511; translated by R.A.B. Mynors & D.F.S. Thomson. This letter forms the dedicatory preface to Moriae encomium.
"More is inscribed in my heart in letters that no injurious time can erode."
— Erasmus in De copia, July 1512; translated by Betty I. Knott. This sentence is one of two hundred variations on the theme "Always, as long as I live, I shall remember you" found in De copia. The sentiment of the theme was addressed to Thomas More, and twenty-five of the variations explicitly mention him.
"[T]he moment [Thomas More] heard I was stuck in Rochester, he ran down to have another glimpse of his friend Erasmus, being afraid, one would think, that it may be long before he sees him again."
— Erasmus to Andrea Ammonio, August 22, 1516; translated by R.A.B. Mynors & D.F.S. Thomson.
"We are 'together, you and I, a crowd'; that is my feeling, and I think I could live happily with you in any wilderness. Farewell, dearest Erasmus, dear as the apple of my eye."
— Thomas More to Erasmus, October 31, 1516; translated by R.A.B. Mynors & D.F.S. Thomson.
“You would hardly believe, my most lovable Erasmus, how my affection for you, which I was convinced would admit of no addition, has been increased by this desire of yours to bind me still closer to you, and how forcibly I exult in the glory of being so highly valued by you. […] I am entirely free from vainglory, and yet, to tell the truth, this is the one itch in the way of ambition which I find impossible to shake off, and which tickles me in a most agreeable manner, when it comes to my head that distant posterity will remember me for my friendship with Erasmus, attested in letters and books and pictures and every other way.”
— Thomas More to Erasmus, October 7, 1517; translated by R.A.B. Mynors & D.F.S. Thomson.
"Not that I mean by this to stop you from doing what you please with my verses, who can do what you please even with me."
— Thomas More to Erasmus, May 1520; translated by R.A.B. Mynors.
"When More died I seem to have died myself: because we were a single soul as Pythagoras once said. But such is the flux of human affairs."
— Erasmus to Piotr Tomiczki, August 31, 1535; translated by Gerald Malsbary & Mary Taneyhill.

365 Day Movie Challenge (2019) - #20: Philadelphia (1993) - dir. Jonathan Demme
Philadelphia is a film that evokes three distinct responses: it was a groundbreaking drama as far as Hollywood was concerned, being the first big-budget American film to address the AIDS crisis (earlier titles like Buddies, Parting Glances, Longtime Companion and Chain of Desire were independently produced); it is impressive from a technical point of view, given director Jonathan Demme and cinematographer Tak Fujimoto’s uses of close-up and extreme close-up shots throughout the story to emphasize the deeply personal, intimate nature of the conjoined journeys of lawyers Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks) and Joe Miller (Denzel Washington); and at the same time, the film gives one pause for thought with regard to what has and has not changed in Hollywood’s examples of representation over the past quarter of a century. Hanks’ Oscar-winning role as a dying man fighting to maintain dignity in the face of injustice and homophobia is a sensitive portrayal, to be sure, but it is also one in a long line of performances by heterosexual actors who have been praised for portraits of LBGTQ+ suffering. At least knowing that Ron Nyswaner’s screenplay for Philadelphia was inspired by two real men who had similarly taken their ex-employers to trial for HIV/AIDS-based discrimination, Geoffrey Bowers and Clarence Cain, lends credence.
To be fair, several elements of Philadelphia are indeed worthy of recognition. Denzel Washington makes his character, Joe Miller, an understandable substitute for the most prejudiced and ill-informed members of the audience. Initially, Joe’s preconceived notions about gay men, sexuality and masculinity make the concept of him taking on Andrew’s court case ridiculous - an attempt to hold Andrew’s former bosses at a law firm responsible for wrongly terminating him after the senior partners discovered he had AIDS - but of course, Joe eventually sees the light. In some ways I would argue that Joe’s arc is more interesting than Andrew’s, which is perhaps the result of Tom Hanks’ irrefutable aura of saintliness, but certainly Hanks dominates the film’s most magnificent scene: Andrew conveys to Joe the tragic beauty of Maria Callas’s expressive voice in a recording of the “La mamma morta” aria from the opera Andrea Chénier. Music, cinematography and acting combine to shape a powerful moment that simultaneously causes time to stand still and reiterates the urgency of Andrew’s medical condition.
It is also hard to deny the greatness of Philadelphia’s cast. The film bursts at the seams with talented performers; besides the aforementioned Hanks and Washington, there are Antonio Banderas (very good in a somewhat underwritten role as Andrew’s supportive partner Miguel), Jason Robards, Joanne Woodward, Mary Steenburgen, Ron Vawter (himself openly HIV-positive at the time), Bradley Whitford, Anna Deavere Smith, Charles Napier, Roger Corman, Ann Dowd, Chandra Wilson, Robert W. Castle, John Bedford Lloyd, Tracey Walter, Daniel von Bargen and Roberta Maxwell. (If you look quickly, there is also a brief, uncredited cameo by famed bon vivant Quentin Crisp during a party scene.) Philadelphia is a significant cultural document, one which has its flaws but remains an affecting piece of cinema.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Review
Aviation History, Part III
Tumblr media
It is quite difficult to write about the novels written by Charles Dickens, as you have to be one among the thousands of people who have done the job earlier. The original Red Dead Redemption also featured an Honor system, but it was rather basic. Helping individuals in distress was looked upon favorably, but robbing or aiding thieves would drag you down, often Red Dead Redemption 2 Download putting you at odds with the story the game wanted to portray. Morgan is a full-fledged outlaw, so you don't have to worry about playing the game without ever committing a crime. Mayhem and murder are part of the experience. How you help people — whichever side of the law they may be on — is what matters in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Okay, so I understand that criticising this game is far from the most popular thing to do, especially after heaping a load of praise onto it, but I feel I have to make some comment about this. My one minor gripe with the game is how the controls feel. I can't really understand the logic behind having the same Red Dead Redemption 2 Download button for interaction with NPCs and for aiming your gun. Having to make sure your gun is holstered before interacting is not always something we have time to do, or at least, its not something I really want to have to think about every time beforehand.
Yet, it's not just the stunning presentation that makes this world feel so vivid — it's the tools you're given to interact with it. When it comes to making your mark on most game worlds — Rockstar's other works Red Dead Redemption 2 Download included — players are normally given two options: commit violence or do nothing.
Figuring out what matters can also be tricky in terms of training enough to have sufficient practice in appropriate skills for a task. Skills can be boosted permanently by spending time in practice, as in the original games, or sometimes by reading certain books. What makes this easier, though, is that there's an equipment system Red Dead Redemption 2 Download where skills can also be boosted temporarily by what Shawn has equipped. Which items do what requires a bit of trial and error, but some skills can be boosted so much by items that training them requires much less time commitment than you might initially think.
Tumblr media
Among other actors who should be mentioned, the catwalk model Hong Ling who is Jack Moore's date is played by real life model, Tv presenter and actress Jessey Meng who hails from Taiwan. Byron Mann plays Lin Dan, a central figure in the business negotiations which Jack Moore is conducting, and James Hong plays his father Lin Shu, a minister in the Chinese Government. The presiding judge at Jack's trial is Chairman Xu, played by Tsain Chin. Xu has little time for Jack's protestations, but it seems Red Dead Redemption 2 Download that under the Chinese judicial system she is not in full control of her own courtroom, as she is answerable to Party officials. Robert Stanton is the American embassy official Ed Pratt who tries to help Jack. His role is not entirely sympathetic - he does his best for Jack Moore, but his hands are tied by diplomatic niceties and red tape. Bradley Whitford plays Jack's business associate Bob Ghery.
Watching Red Dead Redemption 2's 34-minute credits sequence was a saga all on its own. I've watched (and skipped) countless lengthy credits sequences in my years playing video games, but this time I decided to really pay attention, to try to get a real sense of the scope of this eight-year production. First came the names one tends to associate with a game and its overall quality the executive producers, the studio heads, the directors. Right at the top were the writers, Dan Houser, Michael Unsworth and Rupert Humphries, whose substantial efforts resulted in such a fine script filled with such wonderful characters.
Look, I was deeply engaged in this game from start to finish. It's clear the developers took that extra year to make sure they got every detail right. Every detail, that is, expect the unbearably cheesy and cloying horns and light funk rhythms. I spent over 50 hours on the main story, and the aggressively soothing soundtrack wore on me the whole time. Even as I was drawn further in by caring for my horse, oiling my guns, reading the in-game dry-goods catalog, learning Red Dead Redemption 2 Download campfire recipes, and the dozens of other absorbing little side tasks in this game, the laid-back easy-listening fusion did its best to dive me right back out. It's possible this was part of the developer's broader vision for the game, a comment on homogenizing modernity or something? I don't know. It just ends up just feeling like a glaring misstep in something that is in every other sense a masterpiece.
What does the Xbox 360 3 Red Lights error actually mean? The Xbox 360 is a hardworking gaming machine. The advanced graphics and networking capabilities are very Red Dead Redemption 2 Download demanding on its hardware. Due to these performance demands, the console tends to heat up.
Scavenging is best in first-person perspective, which is now a choice that you have in this prequel. In the house, you can find provisions such as canned food, oatcakes, and more Red Dead Redemption 2 Download. As we pointed out in our Red Dead Redemption 2 preview , you'll need to make sure that Arthur eats periodically throughout the game. This will help increase his stamina and health meters.
RDR2 is so detailed, even Morgan's hair and beard grow in real(ish) time. If you don't want Arthur ending up like some Wild West yeti, treat your cowpoke to regular trips to one of the game's barbers. In a cute nod to CJ from GTA: San Andreas, the outlaw also loses or gains weight if he eats too little or too much - don't worry, the results Red Dead Redemption 2 Download are less cartoonishly exaggerated than shoving Clucking Bell bucket meals down Carl's throat. Couple this with extensive wardrobe options, which let you tweak everything from your antihero's shirts and vests, to even the spurs on his boots, and few open-worlds give you this much agency over your character.

MOVIES (THAT MIGHT BE) WORTH CHECKING OUT IN JANUARY 2020:
January 3:
THE GRUDGE
We begin with an attempted reboot of the hit horror flick based on another hit horror film.
Based on the Japanese import Ju-On, the film centres around a curse born from a fit of anger that attacks anyone who dares to enter a house. The pale boy ghost and the contorted woman became instantly iconic, especially when they made that crackling sound. Of course, people in North America are more likely to recognize its remake The Grudge. While not on the same level as its predecessor, the American was still a hit. It has become so iconic that there was a crossover movie where it faces off against the ghost from Ringu.
This time, the target is Peter Spencer (John Cho), a real estate agent who intended to sell a house not realizing it contained the title curse. Believing a homicide occurred, Spencer calls on Detective Muldoon (Andrea Risborough) to investigate. But they fail to realize the curse inside dooms all who enter it with a violent and it’s coming for them.
Here’s another of a long list of Horror remakes Hollywood has been peddling in the last decade. For every good one (It, Child’s Play), there are three times as many failures (the recent ones being Pet Semetary and Black Christmas). I’m not having much hope for this one. It can still be good, but it needs a director with as creative a vision as Takashi Shimizu’s.
THREE CHRISTS
Based on The Three Christs of Ypsilanti by Milton Rokeach, Three Christs tells the real-life experiment involving three men who claim to be a certain savior.
In Michigan’s Ypsilanti State Hospital in 1959, Dr. Alan Stone (Richard Gere) conducts a revolutionary experiment where he brings together three men (Peter Dinklage, Walton Goggins and Bradley Whitford) who each claim to be Jesus Christ. He hopes to use this experiment to force them to confront their delusions. It would certainly be preferable to electroshock therapy.
A real-life story like this comes with a lot of potential. But with the director of Fried Green Tomatoes helming this project, it looks like this will be a typical biopic. This is a shame with 4 great actors working together.
January 10:
1917
Sam Mendes, the director of American Beauty and Skyfall, takes us back to World War One and hopes to enter the Oscar Race with his latest war movie 1917.
Generla Erinmore (Colin Firth) tasks young British soldiers Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Schofield (George MacKay) with a difficult mission. 1,600 of their fellow soldiers are heading into a fatal trap and the two soldiers must deliver a message calling off the raid before tomorrow morning. And one of them is Blake’s brother. Racing against time, Blake and Schofield are forced to rush through enemy territory to deliver the message on time. Benedict Cumberbatch also
The film is already garnering high praise for its gripping suspense and graceful camera. It’s already garnering nominations at the Golden Globe Awards for Best Dramatic Motion Picture, Best Director and Best Original Score. It’s especially getting praise is how it makes the film look like one long camera shot following the two leads through their mission.
CHHAPAAK
All the way from India is a film inspired by real life acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.
This film looks at Malti (Deepika Padukone), a woman horribly scared after an acid attack. The film follows her through her physical treatment and eventual trial. It looks like the core of the film will be her journey of emotional healing, regaining her self-worth with the help of loved ones.
Unless you know films that show Bollywood movies, I suspect this film will be hard to find for many people. Kind of a shame
JUST MERCY
Writer/Director Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12) brings ups the real-life story of a lawyer who battled systemic racism to free an innocent man.
Harvard graduate Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) heads to 1980s Alabama to assist advocate Eva Ansley (Brie Larson) to defend those wrongfully convicted. His first and most important case is Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx), who was sentenced to death for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl despite evidence proving his innocence including a group of people who could vouch for him.
As Stevenson works prove McMillian’s innocence and those of other death row inmates, he faces up against an uncaring political maneuvers and systemic racism.  But neither he nor Ansley will let this stop them.
Audiences love and underdog story and this one is sure to satisfy, especially with Jordan, Larson and Foxx starring in the film. It’s also sure to offer some catharsis for those frustrated with current systemic racism. But this could by a typical biopic forgotten by the end of the year.
January 17:
BAD BOYS FOR LIFE
I’m going to be brief because I don’t think we’re going to get anything special from this movie. This film is pretty much a checkmark of every plot element you see in every Buddy Cop movie. Cop considering retiring. Check. One last job? Check. Training arrogant young upstarts? Check. A forever disapproving superior throwing a tantrum of our heroes. Check. It doesn’t matter how flashy the trailer is, a cliché is a cliché.
But then again, the original two film were also piling of buddy cop clichés. The only thing they had going for them was Will Smith’s charisma and Martin Lawrence’s over the top delivery. Only the second movie was memorable thanks to some well shot, over the top action scenes. But I highly doubt this one will be memorable when Michael Bay has backed out of the film.
We don’t really need another Bad Boys movie, especially when we have the Fast and Furious series and the John Wick movies.
DOLITTLE
The famous physician who can talk to animals returns in a new reboot. This time the Doc is played by Robert Downey Jr, fresh from retiring his iconic role of Tony Stark after 10 years. It also looks like it will be going back to its roots as a fantasy story set in the Victorian era. There’s not much plot summary to go on, but judging by the trailer, it will have him setting sail on an adventure alongside his animal friends. At the core of the film seems to be his friendship with two kills. Also, among the cast are Jessie Buckley as Queen Victoria and Antonio Banderas as a pirate.
There is an all-star cast voicing the animals, including Tom Holland, Emma Thompson, Ralph Fiennes and Rami Malek just to name a few.
This film seems to rest its shoulders on Robert Downey Jr, hoping his charm will do for Dr. Doolittle what he did for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But the film lives and dies on writer/director Stephen Gaghan, who is an unusual choice for a family fantasy considering that his resume consists of gritty war movies like Syriana, Traffic and Rules Engagement and crime drama tv shows like The Practice and NYPD Blue. He’s even written for the video game Call of Duty: Ghosts. It’s strange that someone with this resume would be chosen to reboot this franchise. It’s especially risky considering the original attempts to adapt Hugh Lofting books for the big screen. But if Martin Scorsese can make Hugo, there’s a chance Gaghan can make Dolittle work
The first one was a musical that tried to bank on the Sound of Music’s success but was an epic flop. It didn’t help that lead actor Rex Harrison was a notoriously difficult drunk who couldn’t sing. In fact, his behind the scenes shenanigans were way more interesting than the actual movie as proved by Mark Harris’ non-fiction book Pictures at a Revolution. Decades later, 20th Century Fox reboots the franchise was a hit thanks to Eddie Murphy as the title character and a variety of comedic voice actors (especially Albert Brooks, Chris Rock and Norm McDonald) voices the animals. No matter the quality, there’s a weight of nostalgia for both movies with many people growing up with these movies. This film will face the challenge of pushing past the nostalgia.
WEATHERING WITH YOU
From beloved anime writer/director Makoto Shinkai comes another romantic fantasy about two teens.
Teenage boy Hodoka (voiced by Kotaro Daigo) runs away from his isolated island home for Tokyo. Homeless and desperate, Hodoka takes a job as an assistant for journalist Keisuke Suga (Sun Oguri). His job involves finding “The Sunshine Girl”, a local teen girl who can control the weather. He soon finds her in Hina Amano (Nana Mori), a cheerful teen girl living with her brother. He is in awe with her power when she freezes the rain and love soon sparks. But messing with nature comes with a price and soon Hodoka and Hina are fighting to stay together.
Of all the movies on this list, this is the one I’m most excited to see. Once I saw his recent his Your Name, I was in pure awe. Never has a sunset looked more beautiful than in Shinkai’s anime. Every environment in Shinkai’s films enchant you with their vibrant colours and stunning details. Just as beautiful are his fantastical stories of young people growing up. At the core of each story is teens in love kept apart by unusual circumstances, whether it’s distance or time or even being in each other ‘s bodies.
This film’s already a major hit in Japan, which is very encouraging for anime fans.
January 24:
COLOR OUT OF SPACE
And now for something a little weird.
Nathan Gardner (Nicholas Cage) has moved his family to a remote farm to escape city life and live a life of peace and quiet. Then God was like “LOL No!” and sends an asteroid down their way. Then weird shit starts happening, most with colours mutating everything.
With a crew like this, you know you’re getting into some crazy shit. First, the film is based on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft, the inventor of cosmic horror and the man who gave us Cthulhu. Then there’s co-writer/director Richard Stanley, known for his odd genre flicks including Hardware and Dust Devil.[i] And then there’s Nicholas Cage, whose as well known for his scenery chewing Kabuki acting as his acclaimed Oscar-nominated roles. Last year, writer/director Panos Cosmatos found perfect use of Cage’s Kabuki acting in the ultra-stylized revenge masterpiece Mandy. Let’s be honest, the only types of films Cage’s Kabuki acting can work are either stylized, unintentionally hilarious or tongue-in-cheek. With the producers of Mandy working on this film, there’s high hopes it will be deliver on the stylized goods.
THE GENTLEMEN
After remaking Aladdin (and making lots of money in the process), director/writer Guy Ritchie returns to his roots with his latest English crime comedy The Gentlemen.
From what I can gather, the films about an American Pot Dealer (Matthew McConaughey) who plans to sell off his Empire in London when a young gang led by Dry Eye (Henry Golding) starts a drug war. There’s not much plot to go on, but with a Guy Ritchie movie, the plot will be way too complicated to explain. What is guaranteed is that there will be lots of oddball gangsters with weird names, hilarious and gruesome deaths and shit blowing up.
The film features an all-star cast including Charlie Hunnam, Colin Farrell and Hugh Grant continuing his streak of getting his groove back by playing against type.
So far, Ritchie hasn’t made a film that’s reached the same level as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels or Snatch. For the most part, he has been unsuccessful stepping out of his comfort zone. Here’s hoping The Gentleman will bring his back on his A Game.
THE TURNING
This day concludes with a modern take of Henry James’ classic novella The Turn of the Screw.
Kate (Mackenzie Davis) is hired as a governess for care for her boss’s orphaned niece Flora (Brooklyn Prince) and nephew Miles (Finn Wolfhard). But as she cares for them in a secluded mansion, she comes to realize they are being haunted by hostile spirits. Can she protect them for what lies in the mansion?
The film has been remade multiple times, with the most acclaimed one being the 1961 classic The Innocents. This once changes it up by setting it in current times, with a notable scene of Miles creeping Kate out with drums. The film also gives some Conjuring vibes, especially with its cinematography. But it should be noted that similarity doesn’t equal copying and there could be some unique elements in this film.
There certainly is a good chance with director Floria Sigismondi will offer a unique vision. She has already directed episodes of stylized shows like The Handmaid’s Tale, Daredevil and American Gods, but she’s already well known for her stylized directing from her work in music videos. Since Marilyn Manson’s “The Beautiful People”, dilating, jittery camera work has become her trademark, working alongside artists including David Bowie, Bjork, Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake (just to name a few).
January 27:
BEANPOLE
Here’s the film Russia hopes will be nominated for Best Foreign Language film.
Set in Leningrad in 1945, Beanpole centres on Masha (Vasilisa Perelygina) and Iya (Viktoria Miroshnichenko) struggling to trying to rebuild their lives in the ruins of a city demolished by war. At the core of film is the infertile Masha hiring Iya as a surrogate mother.
There’s not much go on, but with the film winning Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival, there’s good prospects for this film. It seems to be a character drama like Roma. Here’s hoping this film’s as quietly engaging as Alfonso Cuaron’s masterpiece.

THE TRAITOR
We conclude this with an Italian biopic about Tommaso Buscetta, the first Mafia Informant in 1980’s Sicily.
Tommaso (Pierfrancesco Favino) was a member of the Cosa Nostra. Then in 1983, half of his family is killed in a gang war. Now he intends to make them pay using the arm of the law. He knows the mob will do whatever it takes to stop him, but he’s more determined than ever. But as the trials continue, Tommaso will show the rabbit hole goes deeper than the law expected with political figures in the mafia’s pockets.
This is another film that may fall by the wayside, which is a shame because this film seems like a great biopic. It could certainly give overdue attention for director/co-writer Marco Bellocchio, who has remained a criminally overlooked director despite making acclaimed movies since the 1960s.

Threats to Judicial Independence Surge Worldwide: Is America at Risk?
Courts in many parts of the world are suffering from “democratic erosion” because of a growing tendency to ignore basic precepts of fairness and judicial independence, warns a forthcoming article in the University of California-Davis Law Review.
The article, entitled Abusive Judicial Review: Courts Against Democracy, cites recent actions by governments in Hungary, Turkey, and Venezuela as examples  of efforts to undermine judicial independence—but it also points out that the U.S. is also  vulnerable.
In the article, authors David Landau of the Florida State University College of Law and Rosalind Dixon of the University of New South Wales Faculty of Law say  “abusive judicial review” can happen when authorities change or completely replace existing constitutional restrictions, such as those  on term limits, allowing themselves  or others to remain in power “indefinitely.”
For example, in 2017, the government of Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan used constitutional amendments to “strengthen presidential power.” They quoted two Turkish journalists from Verfassungsblog  who said the amendments eroded the country’s judicial system, perpetuating “executive dominance”  and “ a sustainable state of emergency in which Turkey will be governed mostly by executive orders.’”
In other, even more extreme, examples of a grab for power, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Hungry have recently entirely scrapped their constitutions to  “perpetuate the power of the regime,” according to Brookings.edu.
The constitution enacted by the late Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez in 1999  concluded, “The leader that controlled [Venezuela] would be superior to any pre-existing law or institution.”
His constitution is still in force today.
Another form of judicial abuse occurs when those in power seek to change laws governing the “regulation and oversight of the media.”
Singapore is notorious for imposing limitations on “freedom of speech and assembly,” but its restrictions don’t come close to what Kim Jong-Un, the “Dear Leader” of North Korea, imposes.
On the Reporters Without Borders website, the 2019 World Press Freedom Index lands North Korea in second to the last place ahead of Turkmenistan.
“North Koreans can still be sent to a concentration camp for viewing, reading or listening to content provided by a media outlet based outside the country,” which only further demonstrates dictator Kim Jong-Un’s abuse of power, the website says.
Ozan O. Varol, in his study of Stealth Authoritarianism, published in the Iowa Law Review and cited in Landau and Dixon’s paper, noted that courts can use existing laws regarding defamation and money laundering “in selective ways to punish opposition to the regime.”
The tasks that the judicial system and judges separately carry out to undermine democracy take two forms, according to Landau and Dixon.
The first form of “abusive judicial review” is considered “weak” when those in power uphold legislation that undermines citizens’ ability to participate in democratic activities like voting.
“Strong” abusive judicial review occurs when judges overhaul the system, and as mentioned above, remove term limits and nullify the power of the opposition.
The U.S. is fertile ground for abusive judicial review, according to Landau and Dixon.
Historians argue that then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s efforts to appoint more justices to the Supreme Court who would rule in favor of his Depression-era economic  initiatives in 1937 was an early example. The  so-called“court packing” plan proved unnecessary after several justices announced they were now leaning in support of FDR.
More recently, the 2018 ruling in Trump v. Hawaii  which upheld the administration’s Muslim travel ban, has been “criticized as an abdication to a president with authoritarian leanings,” according to Landau and Dixon.
They also argue that there are at least hints of the “weak” form of abusive judicial review in the Supreme Court’s consistent refusal to hear “partisan gerrymandering claims and related issues,” most recently in Gill v. Whitford. Other glimpses of this form of abuse can be seen in the increasing rates of defamation suits against political opponents and media outlets.
Editor’s Note: In a major decision Monday, the court ruled that the Republican-led Virginia House of Delegates did not have the legal right to challenge a lower court opinion that struck several district maps they had drawn as an unconstitutional racial gerrymander.
According to the paper, the U.S. remains protected by a checks and balances system that is aimed at preventing any one branch of government  from abusing its authority.
So, while  American democracy has less to fear from abuses  of  judicial power, “We should not take for granted this will always be true,” write the authors.
