A prompt for @sunnymelonpan as a thank you for adapting one of my writing prompts into a full-fledged, 12-part comic! She did an amazing job, and I absolutely adore her art. Check her out.
For this one-shot, she requested a sickfic involving Zim and Dib in college. Zim goes to school while running a fever, and it culminates in him passing out right in front of Dib.
The story will be under the cut. I’ll give Sunny the honor of naming this fic (and it’s totally not because I can’t think of a name for it for the life of me).
Relationship: Established ZaDf
Characters: Dib, Zim, GIR, Computer
Warnings: Typical “sick person” stuff, I guess. Fainting, vomiting (nongraphic), fever, chills.
Words: 1,261
Something was off about Zim. Dib sensed it pretty early on, but it took a while for him to grow genuinely concerned. When he’d seen Zim outside the library on Monday, he instantly took notice of how tired he looked. Uncharacteristically so. His face was wane, dark undereye circles standing out against the pale skin.
It only seemed to get worse as the week went on. For the next few days, Zim walked right past him on campus without so much as raising his head or saying hello. He looked slow. Unsteady.
Ever since they’d begun school at the public university in their town, they had both been rather busy. They normally made efforts to at least acknowledge one another, though.
Now, early Thursday morning, Dib thought he would make a conscious effort to catch Zim after class and find out what was wrong. Both had classes in the engineering building, and Dib managed to duck out of his early to wait for him. He parked himself on the bench outside the double doors to Zim’s lecture hall, watching as throngs of students exited at the top of the hour.
He was started to get antsy when he didn’t see Zim among them. Once the little faux invader finally shuffled out, he did a double take. He almost didn’t recognize him.
Aside from looking even more exhausted than before, what made him stand out was the bright yellow sweatshirt he was wearing. The abbreviated name of their university was printed in bold black letters on the front. Zim never wore anything but his perfunctory military uniform. Even during their high school graduation last spring, it had been on beneath his cap and gown, and he’d quickly shed the gown as soon as he’d shaken hands and gotten his diploma. Why was he switching things up now? Sudden burst of school spirit? Not likely. Zim had made it very clear that the only reason he was continuing on with his education was to “learn more about the indigenous species on this hideous dirtball.”
He trudged right past Dib, looking down at the ground. The price tag from the university bookstore poked out from the back of the hoodie.
“Hey!” Dib called, standing up and waving his hands exaggeratedly.
Zim’s eyes flicked up blearily.
“Hey, Zim what’s—” The words died on his lips immediately.
He looked awful.
His skin was an ashen gray-green, and a sheen of sweat covered his entire face. Tendrils of black hair from his wig were stuck to his forehead, and Dib swore he could see the outline of a single black antenna trying to escape from underneath it.
“Zim? Are you okay?”
Zim opened his mouth, then swayed a bit on his feet. “Heh? Yeah. I just… I just…”
He stumbled backwards. His eyes rolled back into his head, and his legs crumpled beneath him.
Dib swore loudly, then lunged forward to catch him before he could hit the ground.
-x-
It took a disconcertingly long time for Zim to come around. Long enough for Dib to carry him up to his dorm room and pace around with his phone in his hands, debating on calling GIR, or even his sister.
He had gotten as far as pulling up the number for the base’s landline when he heard a weak groan from the other side of the room.
“Zim?”
Over on the unmade bed where he had been deposited, he was beginning to stir. Dib stood over him, watching as his eyes fluttered open.
Zim looked peaceful for all of two seconds before a strange sort of urgency came over him. He flew up into a sitting position, hand pressed against his mouth.
Dib’s eyes widened. By some stroke of unimaginable luck and quick thinking, he dove for the garbage can next to his desk and shoved it under Zim’s chin just in time for him to be sick.
Zim retched violently, his tiny body quaking inside his oversized hoodie. After a few minutes, it tapered off to groans, then he went quiet.
“Are you done?” Dib asked.
“Uh huh.” He thumped back against the bed. He still looked nauseous and his eyes were watering near the edges.
Dib placed the trash bin in the bathroom and returned to his side. “What’s going on? Are you sick? You’ve been acting weird all week.”
Without giving him time to answer, he placed a hand on Zim’s forehead, eyebrows raising at how hot he felt. “You’re burning up.”
Zim groaned and tried to turn his head away. “Not sick. Irken elites don’t get sick.”
Something about the way he said it made Dib feel as though it had been rehearsed several times before.
He sighed and glanced back down at his phone, turning it over in his hands. His thumb pressed down on the little green call button and he held it up to his ear as it rang.
Just as he’d hoped, GIR’s trilling little voice surfaced after the third ring “Helloooooo?”
“Hey, GIR. I’m here with your stupid master. He just passed out in the hall after second period and—”
“—I TOLD HIM!”
Dib winced and held the phone back a few inches.
“I told him not to go to school!” GIR shouted again. “I knew this would happen!” He dissolved into wailing sobs on the other end.
“Ummm…” A voice piped up in the background. Dib immediately recognized it as the computer’s. “I told him not to go to school. You told him to pick up a Suck Monkey at the 7-Eleven after he finished classes.”
“Oh yeaaaaahhhh,” GIR said, sounding perfectly cheery again.
Dib sighed. That made more sense. “GIR, tell the computer I’m taking Zim home. He’s running a fever and can’t even stand up.”
He flicked his eyes towards Zim, who was shivering miserably on his side with his back to Dib. His wig had flopped off and was lying on the pillow like some sort of sodden, dead animal.
“Okie dokie!” GIR said.
Dib hung up and walked back over to the lump on his bed.
“Alright. Let’s go.” He pulled the hood of Zim’s sweatshirt over his head to cover his antennae. “Why did you buy this, anyway?” he asked, tugging at the strings of the hoodie.
“Cold,” he murmured into the mattress.
When Dib tried to pick him up, Zim’s muscles went rigid. “I’m fine.”
Dib laughed once. “Sure you are. Tell me all about how great you’re doing. Go ahead and stand up for me.”
Zim looked as if he were going to try, then went limp again with a frustrated grunt. His face turned to shoot Dib a half-hearted glare.
“That’s what I thought.” Dib gently lifted him off the bed. “Come on. Let’s go back to your house. I’ll put on a movie and make you some soup or something.”
Zim grimaced into Dib’s chest as he carried him out of the dorm room. “I hate you.”
“Uh huh. At least I’m not going to make you walk into 7-Eleven to get GIR’s Suck Monkey.”
Zim grumbled all the way down the hall and to the elevator, clutching the edges of Dib’s trench coat and awkwardly trying to wrap it around himself for warmth.
Dib managed to pry his claws off him once they got to his car, which only earned him more half-coherent insults. He buckled Zim into the passenger seat and heaved out a heavy sigh as he walked around to the driver’s side.
It was going to be a long day.

Twice named “Happiest Country in the World” and identified as the greenest country on the planet, Costa Rica is the global leader in eco travel and adventure tourism. Costa Rica is half the size of Nicaragua and half the population yet there is so much to see in this tiny country that even a month is not enough. It is the most visited nation in Central America with 2.9 million foreign visitors in 2016 and one of the few countries that focus on preservation of nature and renewable energy. Around 25% of the country’s area is in national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, the largest percentage of protected areas in the world. Costa Rica also possesses the greatest density of wildlife species.
Tumblr media
Map of all the National Parks, Wildlife Refuges, and Protected Areas in Costa Rica
By 2016, 98.1% of the country’s electricity was generated from green sources (hydro, solar, geothermal and biomass) and by Aug 2018 the country was running completely on renewable energy and exporting green energy to its neighbors. Costa Rica does not cut trees for paper and has successfully managed to diminish deforestation from some of the worst rates in 1973- 1989 to almost zero by 2005.
Costa Rica also ranks high on longevity. Nicoya Peninsula in Guanacaste province (where Rapture Surfcamp is located) is one of 7 “Blue Zones” in the world where people live healthiest and longest. According to research, the main factors that contribute to such longevity are: staying close to nature, climate, family, faith, and farming.
Where is the beauty of not being rich in mineral resources you may wonder? For Costa Rica it was the opportunity to avoid colonization 🙂 Lack of resources such as gold and silver made Costa Rica into an isolated and sparsely-inhabited region within the Spanish Empire. Costa Rica was described as “the most miserable Spanish colony in all America”. Another important factor behind Costa Rica’s poverty was the lack of a significant indigenous population available for slave labor, which meant most of the Costa Rican settlers had to work their own land and couldn’t establish large plantations.
Tumblr media
Unappreciated and overlooked by the Spanish Crown and left to develop on its own, it was not long before the early settlers turned to the hills, where they found rich volcanic soil and a milder climate than the lowlands. Costa Rica became a “rural democracy” with no oppressed mestizo or indigenous class and abolished the army in 1949.
When you think of Costa Rica you may imagine endless beaches fringed by palm trees and while that is exactly the scenery on both coasts, in between there are numerous national parks, volcanos, cloud forests, wildlife reserves, waterfalls, and hot springs. So unless you spend at least a week in the middle of the country, you can’t really say you’ve seen Costa Rica. There are 14 known volcanoes in Costa Rica (compare that to 50 in Nicaragua), and 6 of them have been active in the last 75 years. I visited 2 – Rincon de la Vieja and Arenal – both active.
Rincon de la Vieja National Park is one of the driest in Costa Rica with one of the most endangered ecosystems. The active 1900m volcano is like a small Yellowstone with mud pots, boiling hot springs and other geothermal and volcanic features to be observed. If planning to hike a waterfall, choose La Cangreja for its sparkly blue lagoon where you can go for a swim. It is a 6km one way hike, so give it at least half a day and remember it gets dark early in the jungle.
Hacienda Guachipellin has the most amazing hot springs I’ve EVER been to! Experience the hot, hot, hot water (up to 120F) in a secluded natural setting alongside the river. Yes it burns, it also cleanses your pores and disinfects your wounds (comes handy for injured surfers 🙂 ) Try volcanic mud face mask and body painting, refresh yourself with a cold dip in the river ❤ To reach the hot springs you will drive for a while in the middle of nowhere. Don’t be discouraged, there are hot springs at the end of the forrest tunnel 🙂
Arenal Volcano last erupted in 1968 and formed hot springs at its base. The geothermal water, the volcanos (you can hike the Chato crater) and the proximity to the airport have turned the area in an overcrowded tourist attraction. If you decide to head that way, I recommend staying in Arenal (outside of La Fortuna). Hike a volcano or take a horseback ride around it, dip in the hot springs, see the waterfall, swim in the magma heated river, maybe do an outdoor adventure, THEN get out of there. 2 nights are enough 😉
On your way between Rincon de la Vieja and Arenal or from Arenal to Monteverde, stop by Rio Celeste for a day. The drive is long but it is a spectacular, once-in-a-lifetime sight.
Monteverde is my favorite part of inland Costa Rica. Stay 3-4 nights and plan to be busy with every type of nature and adventure tour you have heard of (and even some I couldn’t imagine before – orchid garden anyone?! or observing nature at night (fluorescent frogs 🙂 ), making your own molasses out of sugarcane, riding a cacao-grinding bicycle ?!) To book your tours, stop by Ro at Monteverde Downtown Hostel (even if you are not staying there) and follow his advice. He was SO spot on I was able to see half of the local attractions with the most authentic vendors in 2 days.
Monteverde is the only place in the world where you can still observe an unspoiled cloud forrest – you have 3 public parks to choose from and a number of private reserves. Named after the clouds that travels east to west from the Caribbean to the Pacific and stop in the treetops of Monteverde, the cloud forrest produces water instead of using it.
The Continental Divide that dissects Costa Rica north to south also passes through Monteverde. Since I visited the Divide in Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, and Colorado, it was time to see it in Central America too. The Continental Divide splits the watershed into rivers that flow into the Atlantic and the Pacific.
Two incredible species I learned about in the cloud forrest were ferns older than dinosaurs and bigger than a human that protect the soil from erosion and trees that grow from top to bottom giving its host a tight hug with its roots until they reach the ground 🙂 🙂 🙂 #welcometothejungle My hopes to kiss a frog and find my prince in Costa Rica were shattered when I found out the golden toad has become extinct in Monteverde since 1989 🙂 🙂 🙂
A tour of the Orchid Museum was another highlight of my visit. I got to learn so much about these incredible flowers (jungle weeds to be exact) and I also stopped appreciating or buying the “supermarket variety”. While the orchid flower in nature lasts only a few days, the supermarket type can last for months. It is a hybrid which needs fertilizer once a week to once a month. The original color is actually white and the blue, pink, or purple hues are achieved with food coloring in the roots. First flowering is bright color, next one is color and white and the last one is completely white. PLEASE don’t buy them 😦
There are 30000 different orchids in nature and 1500 of them grow in Costa Rica. Ecuador has the largest number of species in the world in a single country (5000) while Monteverde has the most species per square mile. Guaria Morada is the national flower of Costa Rica. Orchids need indirect sunlight and water. Lower elevation orchids need water once a week, the mountain species need water every day.
The second largest sector of the Costa Rican economy is agriculture with bananas, plantains, pineapple, coffee, sugarcane, and exotic fruits being the main exports. Costa Rica is the 2nd largest pineapple producer in the world with >50% of the international market.
Sugarcane is non-native to America (Columbus first brought it to the Caribbean) but it grows really well in hot, humid climates. “El Trapiche” means sugar cane mill. While it is not typical in Costa Rica any more for small family plants to process the harvested sugarcane, it used to provide livelihood to many early settlers. Since harvesting the sugarcane is not only very laborious but can also be quite dangerous process (sharp leaves, snakes, insects) other countries burn the sugarcane plantations first and then harvest them. The stem contains all the sugarcane juice so it doesn’t burn but the fire takes care of the dangers on the ground.
Growing coffee is very popular in Central America with Costa Rica being one of the most famous producers in the world for single-origin high-quality coffee. All Costa Rican coffee is of the Arabica kind grown at over 1000m elevation. Take a tour of a coffee plantation in Monteverde to learn more about coffee growing and roasting processes!
Since going to the beach is an essential part of your visit in Costa Rica, here is a quick run down of the coast in the Guanacaste region. If you plan on surfing, add an extra week to your vacation, better yet add 2 weeks to properly enjoy the beach and learn new tricks 🙂 And go visit Rapture Surfcamps in Playa Avellanas! (The surf camp with the most amazing sunsets 🙂 )
Tamarindo is the party capital of the Guanacaste region. The local population of 500 swells up to 5000 with tourists in high season. My favorite night in Tamarindo was the Thursday Night Market (part of Rapture Surfcamps weekly activity schedule :-)) Another place I love in town is El Chiringuito Restaurant between Playa Tamarindo and Playa Langosta. Lunch, drinks, and sunset views are to die for! If you in the area during the day, take a tour of Las Baulas Natural Marine Park to see turtles, crocodiles, monkeys, birds, and other wildlife. Boats leave twice a day with exact time depending on the tides and it costs $25 p/p for group tours.
Playa Flamingo is one of Costa Rica’s most famous beaches for it crystal clear waters and pink skies at sunset. When visiting, have a meal at Loco Coco, it is absolutely delicious! Other famous beaches in the area are Playa Negra (filming spot of Endless Summer II), Playa Conchal (not sand but tiny shell pieces), Playa Hermosa (black volcanic sand), Playa Coco (great scuba diving and snorkeling spot), Playa Grande.
What I didn’t have the time to see but came highly recommended was Manuel Antonio National Park, Corcovado National Park, the village of Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean coast, Tortuguero National Park, Montezuma, Malpais, and Santa Teresa on the tip of the Nicoya peninsula and riding the ferry from Punta Arenas to Paquera (closed due to a strike when I was visiting).
You tell me now how a 2 weeks vacation is enough for Costa Rica? I suggest you take a month off, explore the country and send me info on everything I have missed!

Payne says he's seen a definite improve in demand for Japanese products recently, due largely to the flexibility for fans to entry Japanese media, trends and tradition on the Internet. This is one place the place the amount diverges from the Treat and Martinez volumes. Martinez provides an introduction that clearly introduces and supplies references for relevant work on mass culture and to the nation-state in anthropology and Japanese research. Treat's offers deep reflection on the role of in style culture in Japan and Japanese research. Craig little question took a much less academic method so as to make the guide more accessible, but as a result, the introduction fails to provide any tools to college students using it as a textbook. Quotes that accurately describe White Trump Voters.
"It’s not just that he’s white. White people sneer at, mock, ostracize, and generally hate on other white people all the time. It’s that he DELIVERS RACISM and THAT is the priority to his base. This is what gets me when writers and thinkers wring their hands in befuddlement, like Nichols is doing, about how Trump’s base can “vote against their own interests.” They’re not! They’re prioritizing the babies in cages, the “shithole countries” remarks, the deadly Charlottesville clashes with literal fucking Nazis, etc OVER health care, transitioning the economy away from fossil fuels, education, assistance to the poor, and whatever other liberal agenda items one would think would be natural, rational fits for the Cleti everywhere.
These people are absolutely voting in their own interests, and getting exactly what they wanted out of the Trump admin. He has been a tremendous success in their eyes because he has delivered racism since Day 1, and that’s what they want out of politics."
"This, They will never -ever- admit it, outside of trolling on the net, but Trump has done more to support their views and find great joy in it then any GOP member before.
He’s all but given up on the dog whistles, once he found out that the media will simply ‘tut-tut’ and that delights his base. Even when he does something that will fuck them over, they overlook it because he continues to advance their agenda with huge leaps. Most of the never-Trumpers discovered early on that going against him can lead to getting primaried and Mitch is content to let Trump do whatever the fuck he wants with limited disagreement, because he’s busy installing GOP goal friendly judges everywhere.
The DNC’s response has been to avoid rocking the boat as much as they can by offering up Joe with a bone thrown to black people with a possable black woman VIP. (If that even happens), but the chances are high that Trump will get another four years to continue to do as he likes. And what will the Dems do? Protest and throw shade and offer limited resistance that won’t slow down Trump for a second.
People don’t like to even entertain the idea that Trump will win, but without a huge number of people turning out against them, what else can they expect will happen?"
"My father HATED John Wayne with a burning passion that I remember from age 3-4! He loved Westerns but he would spend the entire movie foaming at the mouth at all the racist tropes and outright historical lies of each one of them! Honestly, although he loved thoughtful rap, I think he idolized Chuck D for simply uttering his infamous lyric!
Now that I’ve reached a certain age, I find I love Westerns too - but not John Wayne, Clint Eastwood or any old ones. I like the newer ones that speak to what deplorables white cowboys were: The Revenant, Bone Tomahawk, Hostiles and the like. They’re still white-centered and white-washed but any modern thinking person can see that the cowboy image should stand for nothing but a savagely cruel, thieving, raping murderer (and we’ve been consistently lied to)."
"Does Trump accept responsibility and look out for his team? Not in the least. In this category, he exhibits one of the most unmanly of behaviors: He’s a blamer. Nothing is ever his fault."
"This is nothing but rose-colored bullshit. Anyone who’s ever spent more than 5 minutes working in corporate life knows for the most part this isn’t how white men behave. Those offices are full of extremely mediocre men who are very confident and have nothing to back it up with other than their bluster, egos, and the generational wealth that allows them a leg up over others. That generational wealth allows them to go to the diploma mills that open doors for them. Admitting mistakes or even admitting just not knowing something in that environment comes off as weakness to them. They spend most of their energy trying to project the image of confidence and control, which is why they’re quick to rage when things don’t go their way. A good example is the douche bag running Quibi that gave that horrendus interview a couple of weeks ago. He was asked a couple of questions about why his company was failing while other streaming services are thriving, and where they might have went wrong in their business model. He didn’t accept responsibility for shit. He went into his hurt little feelings and attacked the interviewer, and tried to make the questions seem like they weren’t valid.
On steroids this white American exceptionalist world view is called patriotism. It manifests in the idea that we as a country can do things counter intuitive the rest of the world just because we’re the USA. More mass shootings by far than any other country? USA! Other countries have cheap/free education through college? So what, USA! Biden even displayed this during one of the debates when Warren pointed out the same disparity in our healthcare compared to every other developed nation. Guess how he responded.
I feel like I started rambling a little but what I’m trying to get at is that whiteness, toxic masculinity, and patriotism are so intertwined that its beyond the author of that Trump think piece."
"Funnily enough as the article and subject matter were in regard to racism in the US I didn’t feel a burning need to mention Indigenous Australians but to answer your question they are pretty much in the same boat as black Americans. Did anything I say imply otherwise or were you just fishing for an argument?
"Stupid as it is, “You’re a manly-man, right? So why is your manly-man leader such a cowardly little pussy?”
That’s not what he projects and that’s not what they see. They see him using aggressive and accusatory tones and language all the time and it makes him look tough."
They fall for the “Emporor Has No Clothes” routine because they never look at him critically. They buy the bullshit on the surface, and don’t see that his words never match his actions. He said on tv several times that if anyone in the country wants a Covid test, they can get tested. Ask them how many people they know whose jobs don’t require it, have actually been tested. He down played the death toll of this disaster every step of the way. Remember when we were supposed to be in church for Easter? As long as he lies with confidence, they’ll follow him to hell."
"I’m definitely tired, and frustrated, and everything else. I keep holding my nose and voting, and that only adds to the exhaustion and frustration because very little if anything seems to change, and in some ways we keep repeating the mistakes of the past. I’d never advocate for doing nothing, but trying to engage and challenge the average Republican-voting dipshit to think critically, and not keep supporting people and policies that perpetuate and exacerbate the problems this country has??? No thanks. If you’re not black, I so encourage you to take up that mantle, but for me as a black dude in this country I can’t. Talk about shooting the messenger. Plus, to keep it a buck, this is mostly white people’s mess, if not all. They need to fix it.
Honestly I feel like racism festers because most white people just look the other way. The racism of their peers/friends/relatives doesn’t impact them personally so they’re probably just people to be avoided. Why rock the boat when you can just avoid an uncomfortable topic? Joe might forward you Fox News and OANN stories, and racist FB memes, but he’s fun at Bills games. Well what if Joe is also a cop, or in a management position over minorities? You can bet money he takes those views you overlooked with him to his job. The PoC he interacts with won’t have the benefit of seeing him at Bills games, or might not even have the benefit of being seen as equals."
"People get so caught up in the blatant, mustache-twirling racism that they don’t see the subtle pervasive way it spreads like a cancer. For every Trump there are dozens Joes, and along with the Joes are the real problem: The people who ignore the Joes. The Joes and Karens go on to commit all kinds of microaggressions that Poc pretty much have to tolerate, and in Joe’s and Karen’s minds that’s just the way the world works. I deserved to get followed around Joe’s store. I came in wearing a hoodie and Adidas so I couldn’t be up to any good. Karen felt threatened when I walked into the building she lives in, so she felt justified to call the police, never mind the fact that I live there too. This is how deep this shit runs. It’s not just politics. Racism isn’t just baked into politics. It’s part of the flour the US was baked with.
So I appreciate you if you’re willing to call these fools out. I’m glad somebody is because I’m not wasting my breath. They won’t hear me anyway."
"I mean if Tom Nichols was in front of me and read this steaming pile of shit to me I would’ve slapped him silly and said the reason that people that look like you excuse all of his fuck ups, failings and mistakes is because well HE LOOKS LIKE YOU!!!! The question that none of these mouth breathing chud monkeys seem to want to answer or are incapable of answering is would you excuse any black, Hispanic or Asian man that had his resume? We know the fucking answer.
When this bloated piece of unseasoned chicken shut down the government in January of 2019 hurting his all white, poorly educated base the most a quote from a voter in Florida was burned into my head forever. She said upon not getting her government subsidized check (I mean they have no issues with the government helping them, it is those pesky brown people that are lazy and entitled) “He is not hurting the people he is supposed to be hurting.” Let that sink in. A voting US Citizen thought it was the job of the sitting *president to hurt people. That says it all. Their allegiance isn’t based in anything other than anger and hatred of those that they deem less than them. Fuck him and them and may they both rot in hell."
"“He is not hurting the people he is supposed to be hurting.”
That spontaneous, bewildered, stream of consciousness utterance by someone who doesn’t think critically but has an indwelt recognition of like-mindedness IS the Trump voter exemplified! A racist who found themselves too poor, too old and without the power to demand or protect the status quo and just wants to stick it to their perceived enemies while retaining ‘something’ for themselves.
That sentiment has fueled every waking thought, worry and action of an American white since the founding of this country.
So, it’s not just every Confederate flag waver, every neo-Nazi and every flyover state’er; it’s every aggrieved American white who had to accept the changing world around them; there’s no reasoning with them nor changing their minds.
My fear is that I’m becoming inhumane like them because I was soooo happy when he cut her Meals on Wheels and didn’t cut her Social Security check."
"I think you nailed this right on the head. All through the article, he keeps pointing out what we already know except for one thing. After all, why would white people elect someone who is so far outside of what they claim to be/stand for? He’s not conservative in any real way. Yet conservatives stand behind him. He’s not a Christian in any practical sense by his actions. Yet Christians say he’s sent by God. He’s not a good businessman, father, or even person. Yet here we are. The only answer that makes sense in any real way is that he is proof that to many people, any white man can do the same or better than even the best black man, woman, or POC in general. There’s always a backlash to progress both real and imagined. Trump is it."
"Also, a lot of the characteristics Nichols thinks represent the opposite of idealized masculinity are actually representative of masculinity as it is performed in this country. From my experience with men who lean into their masculinity, it is about performing dominance by antagonizing people, all in the service of making shallow, insecure men feel better about themselves.  Trump is a domineering asshole, which is what too many men think being a man is all about."
"It is fascinating how unbelievably brainless racists are. Many of the commenters and you Damon have pointed out the stupidity of racism. I mean this seriously, racists have absolutely abandoned intellect, progress, humanity or desire for real greatness that could manifest through equality, in order to hold onto the despicable delusion of superiority based solely on a human having more melanin than another. The sheer simplicity of the trick doesn’t even seem like it should work; but alas, all roads merge at Slave Rd. The dimwitted aptitude it takes for a person to actually believe stealing humans, beating, burning, assaulting, selling their children on auction blocks, splitting families (and more brutalities)...... all for greed born out of sheer laziness, and again stupidity is mindblowing. You literally must turn your brain off to be a racist, and you see it now. Millions of white people, with switch STILL off, courtesy of their forefathers, have continued down this same disastrous, nose-spite-ing road. There’s a lot of white people walking around with black kerchief’s, hiding the draining blood and a ragged hole where their nose once occupied, holding a tight grasp of their hate. Their greed. Trump finally allows them to remove that blood soaked kerchief with pride for all the world see their disfigurement. It’s stunning that there is pride where instead, their should be pure shame for then and for now."

Sensor Sweep: Crusher Joe, Diana Rigg, Black Ops Cold War, Ambrose Bierce
Forthcoming (Cirsova): We’ve just received Schuyler Hernstrom’s foreword for Endless Summer, and we thought it was too good not to share:   Discussing stories is a complicated business.  Buried somewhere underneath layers of criticism, commerce, and identity you might find some deep understanding of Misha’s work. But I worry that careless digging will disturb the landscape. I challenge myself to think about his work with the care and sensitivity that he puts into it.
Memorial (The Silver Key): Word spread on Facebook last night that Charles Saunders, author of Imaro, has passed away. It is being reported he died in May. Odd that an obituary search turns up empty.  Let’s hope it may be a rumor, but it does not appear that way. Author Milton Davis, who continued in Saunders’ “Sword-and-Soul” tradition, broke the news, and many authors, friends, and peers have chimed in since.
Cinema (Wert Zone): Born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire in 1938, Rigg was raised by her parents in Bikaner, India. Returning to the UK, she trained as an actress and made her stage debut in 1957 and her TV debut two years later. In 1965 she was cast in the first of her three major screen roles on the fourth season of British spy series The Avengers, playing Emma Peel. Peel was an action heroine with a line in witticisms, engaged in a constant battle of comebacks and ambiguous tension with her co-star Patrick Macnee (playing John Steed).
Cinema (Wasteland & Sky): The 1970s are still looked on by movie snobs as the peak of cinema, destroyed by the aforementioned filthy space movie that opened the theaters of the 1980s to juvenile pap. This is of course ignoring that the 1970s were dead, spiritually, and morally, which makes many of those 1970s “classics” more worthless than the juvenile goofy space movie. It actually has a moral point, regardless of what you think of it. 1970s cinema, as a whole, did not.
Games (Bleeding Fool):  The new game Black Ops Cold War takes place during Reagan’s presidency during the height of the cold war with communist Russia. The initial trailer features KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov speaking about the communist’s plan to bring down America from within. If you pay attention, you may recognize some of the moves being used by the left today. The trailer urges you to “know your history or be doomed to repeat it” as it flashes images from the cold war across the screen.
History (DMR Books): This past Friday marked the four hundred and fifty-fifth anniversary of the definitive end to the Great Siege of Malta. On September 11, 1565, the tattered and battered fleet of Suleiman the Magnificent sailed away from the tiny island of Malta, utterly humiliated. The Ottoman Turks had disembarked amid imperial splendor nearly four months earlier. Their soldiers were reckoned in the tens of thousands, outnumbering by a factor of four to one–at minimum–the Knights Hospitaller and the Maltese who fought alongside them.
Fiction (Galactic Journey): The book is titled The Wizard of Lemuria but we don’t meet the wizard until Chapter 4. There are 12 chapters. The first quarter of the novella-length book is spent introducing our hero, Thongor of Valkarth. He is, although a lowly barbarian mercenary, both mighty and honorable. The book opens on the aftermath of a wager on a zamph race. Jeled Malkh—an officer and swordmaster—lost the wager, and attacked Thongor rather than pay up. Thongor quickly overcame him, shrugged off the bet, and offered to drink away their differences.
War Gaming (Jon Mollison): Miniature wargames in general, and historical wargaming in particular, are headed down the same road as every other hobby out there. You’d think those with an interest in history would be better prepared to learn from the history of other hobbies, but it doesn’t look that way. A lot of ink is being spilled and chit is being chattered about how to save the hobby from… well, from something that can’t really be shown or identified.
Comic Books (Screen Rant): Heads are gonna roll – as well as fly, disintegrate, and cave in upon themselves, along with pretty much any other violent act that can be inflicted upon a head – in the latest adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian. Originally published in Weird Tales and later adapted by Dark Horse Comics, the story of the legendary Destroyer is now published by Ablaze, a publication that has given Conan a sword more caked with blood than ever before thanks in part to their decision to create a truly uncensored version of his exploits.
D&D (Grognardia): I’ve never been much of a fan of Deities & Demigods, though I owned it, of course. Why wouldn’t I? I have always had decidedly completionist tendencies and being an unabashed TSR fanboy, there was no chance I wouldn’t purchase this book as soon as I was able to do so. It’s true I didn’t get much use out of it, but I still proudly displayed it on my bookshelf, right next to the Monster Manual.
Guns (Frontier Partisans): As will most when forced to fight for their way of life, the Apaches of The War Chief utilized any weapon to which they might lay hand. Some of these they fabricated, with especially skilled artisans becoming highly revered by the tribe. The Apaches ranged a broad swathe of the American West and portions of Mexico, and so various materials fell into their hands — materials they converted into bows, arrows, and war clubs, including the famous jawbone club. These weapons and tools, for centuries, they fabricated themselves from indigenous materials.
Edgar Rice Burroughs (Pulpfest): The 2020 Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of Friendship (ECOF) Gathering will be held Sunday, October 11 through Tuesday, October 13 in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Guest of Honor is acclaimed comic book artist and Hollywood illustrator Daniel Parsons. COVID-19 restrictions dictate this will be a small gathering in two large meeting rooms at the Country Inn & Suites located at 1650 Doris Drive. Fort Atkinson is located just 35 miles from Madison or 65 miles from Milwaukee. It’s 100 miles from Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
Fiction (Old Style Tales): “Some Haunted Houses” is easily one of Bierce’s most entertaining series of tales. I recommend it as the ideal Hallowe’en reading choice – a collection of pithy short stories that exude the gloomy atmosphere and chilling mood that make stories like Jacobs’ “The Monkey’s Paw” or Poe’s “House of Usher” horror classics. Reading one after another, a strange feeling of uneasiness creeps into your imagination as Bierce’s reporterly prose calmly details what sound like the verifiable details of veridical hauntings.
Cinema (Swords & Stitchery): There is a space opera out there that came out back in the day that most of you had never heard of… A bit of background, on the weekends back in the 90s I would get into my car & go down to Wallingford,Ct for a weekend of Anime at a local comic shop. I would spend the weekend with friends & one of the things we saw was this. Crusher Joe was made into an animated film in 1983, and a pair of for-video animated episodes in 1989. The film version won the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize in 1983.
Gaming (Future War Stories): There are time when we must ask ourselves when we witness what could have been: how can this not exist? That is how I and many other gamers felt during the recent leak of a Xbox development kit for the Blizzard cancelled StarCraft: GHOST 3rd person action/stealth game for the 6th generation. For many of us, GHOST was going to be first day buy for our OG Xbox consoles…and then there were delay after delay until GHOST was placed on DNR status in 2006 by Blizzard after nearly six years of development that span two studios.
Tolkien (Notion Club Papers): John Garth. The Worlds of JRR Tolkien: the places that inspired Middle-Earth. Frances Lincoln, London: UK, 2020. pp 208. John Garth is one of the best and most important writers on JRR Tolkien. This is his first full-length book since the landmark volume Tolkien and the Great War of 2003; so I knew I would enjoy it. From the title, and the fact that it is a large format, really beautifully-produced, hardback volume; I supposed The Worlds of JRR Tolkien might be dominated by the pictures, maybe even be something like a superior ‘coffee table’ book?
Fiction (Library Blog): This week marks the bicentenary of Sir Walter Scott’s twelfth novel The Abbot, published in Edinburgh on 2 September 1820 and in London two days later. Alone among the Waverley Novels, it was presented not as a stand-alone narrative but as the sequel to an earlier volume, The Monastery, which had appeared just six months earlier. Set in the early years of the Scottish Reformation, The Monastery had sold well but had disappointed many readers and reviewers. Criticism was directed, in particular, at the pivotal role played by the ghostly White Lady,
Cinema (Hollywoodintoto): Reporters have spent days detailing why “Terminator: Dark Fate” became the year’s most embarrassing flop. The movie made just $29 million stateside, and its foreign box office totals are equally weak ($94 million and counting). That’s no way for a franchise reboot to perform. Most observers are writing the saga’s obituary. Those reporters nailed some of the core reasons for its box office woes, from franchise fatigue to recycled story beats. Most missed another crucial factor. The sad decline of Arnold Schwarzenegger, A-list movie star.
Fiction (Adventures Fantastic): So yesterday’s post on Edgar Rice Burroughs and Harold Lamb and the recent post on the canon, coupled with today is the anniversary of the passing of J. R. R. Tolkien and the seventh anniversary of the death of Frederik Pohl, got me to thinking. I referred to Burroughs and Lamb as giants. In the canon post I quoted Newton talking about his achievements being due to his standing on the shoulders of giants. So who exactly are the giants in the field?
Fiction (Tentaculii): There’s a new bibliographic website for prolific British writer Michael Moorcock. The Works Of Michael Moorcock is obviously still a work-in-progress, but the pages for books and shorter fiction appear fairly complete. Moorcock tried his hand with at least one Sherlock Holmes pastiche, but has no overtly Lovecraftian pastiches that I’m aware of. His leftist attacks on many other writers, often described in words such as ‘brusque’ or ‘pungent’, turned out no differently in Lovecraft’s case and with the usual knocks being offered (“astonishingly awful prose” etc).
Fiction (George Kelley): I’ve been a big fan of Hank Davis’s Science Fiction anthologies over the years. Just in time for the Holiday Season, BAEN Books released Space Pioneers, an anthology with just about something for every readers’ taste. In typical Hank Davis fashion, the mix of stories blends Oldies with some newer stories like David Drake’s “Superweapon” (2018). I especially enjoyed Ross Rocklynne’s “Quietus” and Manly Wade Wellman’s “Men Against the Stars.” If you’re in the mood for an entertaining theme anthology, I recommend Space Pioneers. GRADE: A
Fiction (Paperback Warrior): In 2019, Stark House Press generated a commercial and critical hit with the release of The Best of Manhunt, an anthology of stories from the legendary 1950s crime fiction digest. Knowing a good thing when they see it, the reprint publisher has compiled a second volume of blood-on-the-knuckles tales from the popular magazine’s heyday for an August 2020 release.
Writing (Rawle Nyanzi): Recently, I came across an article (archive here) about the evolution of the horror genre in film. While the article is from 2000, and I’m not a horror fan myself, one point stuck with me: how scientific materialism, rather than an understanding of good and evil, became dominant in horror filmmaking, starting with George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. In the materialist worldview, the universe came into being by random chance, and so did the Earth and humanity.
Writing (Kairos): World building is the one element that sets speculative fiction apart from every other category of writing. When designing a secondary world, it’s crucial to establish a foundation of internally consistent principles to help readers suspend their disbelief. Religion in general has been a constant of human existence. Writing a secondary world where there are no and never have been any religions will automatically cause tension between the setting and known history, straining credibility (though it could make for an interesting story hook if handled properly).
Tolkien (Jon Mollison): Listening to the Silmarillion on audiobook, and something occurred to me. The three themes of the Ainur presage the three ages of Middle-Earth.  From the Tolkien Gateway: The Ainur’s flawless Music satisfied even Ilúvatar during this early stage. The Second Theme was “like and yet unlike” the First; it gathered new power and beauty. Soon, however, Melkor’s discord rose up against it, and there was a “war of sound more violent than before”. This time, Melkor’s Theme triumphed over that of the others; many of the Ainur stopped singing entirely out of dismay.

Check It Out: Chicken Bus

Adventure by Chicken Bus: An Unschooling Odyssey through Central America by Janet LoSole
Adventure Memoir
Embarking on a homeschooling field trip to Central America is stressful enough, but add in perilous bridge crossings, trips to the hospital, and a lack of women's underwear, and you have the makings of an Adventure by Chicken Bus. Buckling under a mountain of debt, Janet LoSole and her family are at their wits' end. Determined to make a drastic change, they sell all worldly possessions and hit the road. With only a few items of clothing, a four-person tent, and little else, the family visits a sleepy island backwater in Costa Rica to save endangered sea turtles. In Panama, they bounce around like turnips in the back of a vegetable truck to reach an isolated monkey sanctuary. In Guatemala, they scale the ancient Mayan temples of Tikal. In between tales of begging rides from total strangers and sleeping overnight in the jungle with an indigenous family, Janet endorses community-based travel--supporting local businesses and favoring public transportation called chicken buses. She also writes candidly about what it takes to travel long-term with two little girls amid the chaos of border crossings, erratic drivers, and creepy crawlies lurking at the edge of the jungle.
5 out of 5 fairies
Chicken Bus is unique and fascinating. I honestly wasn't sure I was going to like this, but the synopsis definitely intrigued me. This completely exceeded my expectations! It's engaging and really helps dip your toes in some local cultures as they travel across multiple countries. If you like adventure or travel stories, you'll lose yourself in these pages, traveling right along with the LoSole family.
Where to buy: Amazon, Amazon CA
Add to your TBR list: Goodreads
About the Author: Janet LoSole is a freelance writer living in Ontario, Canada. She holds a bachelor of education degree (French) and is a certified TESOL instructor. Janet is a staunch advocate of community-based tourism. She and her husband use responsible world travel as the primary educational resource for their two homeschooled daughters.

21 Things To Do in Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s Buzzing Capital
Kuala Lumpur, or KL as many know it, is the bustling capital of Malaysia. It’s also a cultural melting pot, with a mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous tribes. If you’re hoping to visit the Malaysian capital, read on for a list of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur.
With a name that literally means “muddy confluence,” this may not sound like a fantastic travel destination at first! In fact, many travelers never see beyond the airport. This is a crying shame, as there are lots of excellent things to do in KL to warrant sticking around for a few days.
Admittedly, I first visited Kuala Lumpur out of necessity. We were traveling to Indonesia and had to catch a flight out of there. Rather than make a beeline for the airport, though, we spent a few days exploring the city. I was happy we booked round-trip flights because I quickly realized there’s a lot going on here.
With just a few short days, you can explore the city’s ethnic neighborhoods, visit caves surrounded by monkeys, check out one of the coolest skyscrapers in the world, and lots more. The city is also home to some world-class museums and parks, so there are fun things to do in Kuala Lumpur regardless of the weather.
Perhaps best of all, you get to enjoy mouth-watering cuisine around every corner here. From Malaysian nasi lemak and Chinese noodles, to Indian curry, you definitely won’t go hungry here!
Let’s get to it and take a look at some of the top things to do in KL.
1. Dataran Merdeka
Our exploration of the Malaysian capital begins in Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square). It was here that Malaysia declared its independence from the British on August 31st, 1957.
While the square itself is actually just a big, well-manicured lawn, there’s plenty to see surrounding it. Be sure to have your camera ready to snap some photos of the gorgeous Sultan Abdul Samad Building. You can also see the 95-meter tall flagpole in the place where the Malaysian flag was first raised.
Head into the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery, which has exhibits detailing the history of the city. It’s very informative and best of all, totally free! You can also take that all-important photo with the “I KL” sign while you’re here.
Around the square, you’ll also see the Royal Selangor Club. Built back in 1884, this once served as a meeting place for the British elite during colonial times. It’s still open and it’s still an exclusive (and very expensive) club, but you can at least admire the beautiful building.
Click here to find Dataran Merdeka on the map and get directions. The square is open 24 hours, but the City Gallery is only open from 9-6:30pm.
2. Petronas Towers – One of the most popular things to do in Kuala Lumpur!
The jewel in the skyline of Kuala Lumpur is definitely the Petronas Towers. These twin towers are 88-stories tall and are the most famous symbol of the city. Fun fact – these are actually the tallest twin towers in the world.
They were designed by Argentine architect César Pelli in a post-modern style. It’s a very impressive design with a facade that resembles motifs found in Islamic art.
I suggest checking out the towers at least twice on your trip — once during the day and again at night when they light up. Whatever time of day it is, visiting the towers will most likely be high up on your list of things to do in KL.
With your ticket, you can first head up to the Skybridge that connects the towers. Located on the 41st and 42nd floors, this is the highest 2-story bridge in the world. From there, you go all the way to the 86th floor to the amazing observation deck.
The Petronas Towers are open from Tuesday-Sunday from 9AM-9PM, with the last admission at 8:30. Tickets are about $20 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $8 for children. Click here for directions.
3. Eating Street (Jalan Alor)
Without a doubt, one of the tastiest things to do in Kuala Lumpur is strolling along Jalan Alor. Commonly known simply as “Eating Street,” this is the place to be to sample some of the best (and cheapest) food in the city.
On both sides of the street, you’ll find a wide variety of restaurants. There are countless hawker stands here as well, with plastic stools spilling out onto the street to accommodate the hungry masses. Be sure to bring your appetite, as there are tons of great choices here.
Jalan Alor is located just a 5-minute walk from Bukit Bintang Station. Click here to get directions. You can come here any time, but it really comes to life at night when all the lanterns illuminate the street. Many locals like coming here for a late-night meal after a big night out on the town.
4. KLCC Park
Even if you decide to skip out on going up to the top, you can enjoy the views of the Petronas Towers from the nearby KLCC Park. This is a 50-acre oasis of green space right in the middle of the big city.
The location of the park is definitely a strategic one. It’s next to the iconic Petronas Towers to highlight the importance of nature among all the hustle and bustle.
There was a lot of attention to detail in the design of this park as well. For example, they selected trees that would attract migratory birds. The park is home to a jogging track, wading pool, a large playground, and more.
A highlight of KLCC Park is the man-made Lake Symphony. The lake has musical fountains that put on a show of sound, light, and water every evening at 8, 9, and 10P PM. Be sure to add this to your list of things to do in Kuala Lumpur!

5. National Museum of Malaysia
If you’re interested in learning more about the history and culture of the country, be sure to head to the National Museum of Malaysia. It’s a beautiful building, as the design comes from traditional Malay palaces.
There are several different galleries in the museum, each with their own theme. In one day, you can go from pre-history to modern-day Malaysia and all points in between. Plus, a visit to the museum is the perfect way to escape the often scorching mid-day heat of Kuala Lumpur!
The National Museum of Malaysia is open daily from 9AM-6PM. Tickets cost just over $1 for adults, so this is a great bargain!  Click here for directions.
6. Kampung Baru (traditional village)
Kuala Lumpur is very much a modern city, full of glistening skyscrapers and high-end shopping malls. Some have resisted the city’s breakneck development, though, including the residents of Kampung Baru.
Here you’ll find one of the last examples of traditional village life in the big city. Land and homeowners here have refused offers from developers on many instances in an effort to maintain their way of life. Ironically, the name Kampung Baru actually means “New Village.”
As Kampung Baru sits on very valuable land nearby the Petronas Towers, developers are very eager to swoop in. It might happen sooner than later and could cost well over $1 billion to buy everyone out. Make sure you check out Kampung Baru before the wrecking ball arrives. You can get directions on the map here.
7. Batu Caves
One of the most popular things to do in Kuala Lumpur is taking a trip out to the Batu Caves. This series of caves is located in limestone cliffs just north of the city.
It’s actually a very important pilgrimage site for Hindus, as the caves are home to several temples and statues. The caves are the focal point of the Hindu festival Thaipusam, when thousands of people visit for the processions.
Upon reaching the Batu Caves, the first thing you’ll notice is the giant, golden statue of Lord Murugan. The next thing you’ll probably see is a cheeky monkey, as the caves are home to countless long-tailed macaques. While you don’t need to be afraid of the monkeys, it’s best to keep your distance. They can get quite territorial and have been known to bite tourists.
Monkey business aside, it’s well worth the short train trip out to the caves. While the Batu Caves are free to visit, you’ll have to join a tour for about $8 if you want to check out the Dark Caves. Click here to get directions to both.
8. Museum Hopping
In addition to the National Museum of Malaysia, you’ve got plenty of other options in KL. Another great choice is the Royal Museum, which was the official royal residence for over 80 years.
If you want to see how royalty lived in Malaysia, be sure to add this to your list of things to do in Kuala Lumpur. The Royal Museum is open daily from 9AM-5PM and costs around $2 for adults. Click here to get directions.
Art lovers will want to be sure to include a trip to the Islamic Arts Museum. With over 10,000 artifacts, their goal is to display a collection that’s representative of the Islamic world. It’s open daily from 9AM-6:30PM and costs just over $3 for adults. You can check it on the map here.
There are plenty of other worthwhile museums in KL, including the Museum of Illusions, National Visual Arts Gallery, and the Orang Asli Crafts Museum. It’s nice to have options for where to go on a hot and/or rainy afternoon, as those are frequent here!
9. Chinatown
Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown is centered around Petaling Street. There are large Chinese arches at either end of the street and it’s covered by a long green roof that’s commonly called the “Green Dragon.”
Along this pedestrian-only street, you’ll find countless shops and vendors selling things like traditional Chinese medicine and counterfeit watches. Haggling is not only allowed but encouraged here!
Of course, there’s also plenty of delicious food in Chinatown. Be sure to try some Hainanese chicken rice while you’re here! An interesting side note I’ll add is that I found the cheapest booze in the city in Indian-run shops in Chinatown. It’s hard to find a cheap drink in this city (well, the entire country actually), so I thought I’d let you know!
In addition to shopping, eating, and drinking cheap beers, you can visit both a Taoist and a Hindu temple in Chinatown. If you’re a backpacker, you’ll likely end up staying here as Chinatown is home to several great budget hostels. Click here for directions.
10. Perdana Botanical Gardens
When you need an escape from the concrete jungle, one of the best things to do in KL is visiting the Perdana Botanical Gardens. Built way back in 1888, the gardens have been a popular refuge ever since.
There’s enough to see and do in the gardens to keep you busy for an entire day. Here you can see the National Monument, visit the hibiscus and orchid gardens, or just relax by the lake.
The gardens are also home to deer, bird, and butterfly parks. To get around the massive park, you can hop on the shuttle tram which runs from 9AM-6PM and costs just over $1. There are also bicycles available to rent if you’d prefer to cycle.
It’s a great way to spend a leisurely afternoon in the city, so be sure to add a stop here to your list of things to do in Kuala Lumpur. Click here for directions.
11. Thean Hou Temple
Another great way to experience Chinese culture in Kuala Lumpur is by visiting the Thean Hou Temple. This beautiful temple incorporates elements of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. It’s one of the biggest temples in all of Southeast Asia and is dedicated to the Goddess of Heaven, Thean Hou.
While it’s always a nice place to visit, the temple is especially lively around Buddhist holidays like Wesak or Chinese celebrations such as the Spring Festival. It’s also a popular place to speak with a fortune teller and practice traditional Chinese martial arts such as tai chi.
The temple is located on a hill and offers some fantastic views of the city. It’s open daily from 9AM-6PM and you can get there by bus or cab. Click here for directions to the temple.
12. Take a Food Tour
Without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur is simply eating your way around the city. With a mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cuisine, there’s something tasty being cooked up around every corner here.
While you can always just follow your nose and find some delicious food on your own, you’ll have a more enjoyable experience by signing up for a food tour. With a local food expert as your guide, you’ll get to sample some of the best cuisine in Kuala Lumpur.
FTM (Food Tour Malaysia) comes highly recommended and offers several different options for food tours. Their best selling tour is called “Off the Eaten Track” and runs every day from 7-11PM. Tours cost $62 for adults and $31 for children. Click here to check their website for all the details.
13. KL Tower
One of the most famous sights in the Malaysian capital is the KL Tower. It stands at 421 meters (1,381 feet) tall and is the highest viewpoint in the city that’s open to the public.
The tower is actually located in one of the oldest forest reserves in the country. It’s called Bukit Nanas, which translates into Pineapple Hill. It’s actually the only such tower in the world that’s built in a forest!
The KL Tower is open daily from 9AM-10PM. Tickets for the observation deck cost $12 or $24 for the sky deck. You could also just go and have dinner at Atmosphere 360, which is a rotating restaurant high up in the tower. For directions to the KL Tower, click here.
14. Little India
In addition to Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur is also home to a neighborhood known as Little India. Taking a walk along the main Jalan Tun Sambanthan, you’ll feel as if you were transported right to the sub-continent!
As you stroll around Little India, you’ll hear Bollywood music blasting and smell the famous banana leaf rice. This dish is a mix of rice, veggies, meat, and curry served on a banana leaf. The proper way to eat it is with your hands, so it can definitely get a little messy! Wash it all down with a refreshing mango lassi for an excellent meal.
Once you’re nice and full, you can peruse the shops in the 3-story bazaar. Here you’ll find colorful saris, flower garlands, and of course, plenty of Bollywood CDs and DVD. Little India is located in the Brickfields area of the city, right near KL Sentral station. Click here for directions.
15. National Mosque of Malaysia
Seeing the National Mosque of Malaysia is definitely one of the top things to do in Kuala Lumpur. It’s absolutely massive and can hold up to 15,000 people. The mosque is one of the most important symbols of this Islamic nation, and it’s an absolutely gorgeous building.
The main dome of the mosque has an 18-pointed star – 13 representing the states of Malaysia and 5 representing the pillars of Islam. It also has a stunning 73-meter tall minaret and a roof resembling an open umbrella.
It’s possible to enter the mosque, but only after prayers are over and with proper attire. If you’re unprepared, they have robes and scarves that you can borrow. The National Mosque is located near the Islamic Arts Museum and the Perdana Botanical Gardens. Click here for directions.
16. Central Market
If you’re looking to pick up some traditional Malaysian souvenirs on your trip, you’ll want to include a stop at the Central Market in your list of things to do in KL. This beautiful art-deco building is a landmark for the cultural heritage of Malaysia with a wide variety of vendors.
It dates all the way back to 1888, when it was originally a wet market. There have been several renovations and expansions over the years, including the recent addition of the Central Market Annexe. Located behind the main building, this area has a bunch of eclectic art galleries along with a 3D Illusion Art Museum.
Inside the market, you can shop for some traditional Malay batik and grab a bite to eat in their excellent food court. The Central Market is located in Chinatown near the Klang River. It’s open daily from 10AM-9:30PM. Click here to get directions.
17. KL Forest Eco Park
If you want to get out in nature without spending half your day in transit, the KL Forest Eco Park is a wonderful choice. It’s a real deal tropical rainforest right in the heart of a major city!
The best part about visiting this tranquil park is the canopy walkway located high up in the trees. It’s totally free to visit and a great place to spend a few hours enjoying the views and the sounds of birds chirping. Be sure to bring your camera because this is a prime spot for photos.
The Forest Eco Park is located near the KL Tower in the area commonly called Bukit Nanas (Pineapple Hill). Click here for directions.
18. Shopping Malls
I’m not usually one to recommend shopping malls, as I absolutely loathe shopping in general, but I’ll make an exception here. You see, Kuala Lumpur can be brutally hot and humid. Once in a while, you just have to escape into an air-conditioned haven!
When it comes to shopping malls, it’s hard to beat Suria KLCC. Located at the foot of the Petronas Towers, this 6-story mall is home to over 320 shops. In addition, the mall also houses a science discovery center, concert hall, and an art gallery.
Best of all, there’s a huge food court here with tons of options. It’s worth a trip here just to cool off a bit and grab a snack! Suria KLCC is open daily from 10AM-10PM. Click here to get directions.
19. Sunway Lagoon Theme Park
One of the most fun things to do in Kuala Lumpur is visiting the Sunway Lagoon Theme Park. This massive theme park is actually six different parks rolled into one and is fun for the whole family.
The different zones at Sunway Lagoon are: water park, scream park, amusement park, extreme park, and Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon. There’s enough going on that you could easily spend the entire day here. Tickets cost about $50 for adults and $40 for children and seniors.
The park is located in the southwest part of the city about 15 kilometers from the center. Click here to get directions. The park is open daily from 10AM-6PM. You can read all about the park and what you can do there on their website.
20. Drinks With a View
I don’t know about you, but I love hitting a good rooftop bar happy hour when visiting a big city. It’s just nice watching the city light up as you enjoy an adult beverage or two with some good conversation.
Thankfully there are several excellent choices for getting drinks with a view in KL. One popular choice is SkyBar, which you’ll find on the 33rd floor of the Traders Hotel. Head here to sip on their signature cocktails, snack on tapas, and enjoy panoramic views of the park and Petronas Towers. They’ve usually got a DJ spinning electronic music here, so come and dance the night away!
Another solid choice for a rooftop bar is Vertigo at the Banyan Tree. Way up on the 59th floor, this is the highest rooftop bar in the capital. Head here around sunset to get some breathtaking views of the city. There’s also a restaurant on the floor below called Horizon Grill if you want to sit down for a meal.
21. Night Out in the Golden Triangle
Rounding out our list of things to do in KL is a night out in the Golden Triangle. This bustling commercial district is home to tons of shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars, making for a great evening.
The Golden Triangle is formed by Jalan Imbi, Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Raja Chulan. It’s located right near KLCC Park and the Petronas Towers, so you always have a nice view of the city’s most iconic building when you’re out and about here.
This is definitely the part of the city to see and be seen, with five-star hotels, luxury shops, and trendy nightclubs. The nightlife is centered around Jalan P. Ramlee, where you’ll find some fun open-air beer spots and bars with live bands rocking out. You can also tear up the dance floor at a nightclub here or sing your heart out in a karaoke bar.
Ready for Kuala Lumpur?
After reading about all the fun things to do in Kuala Lumpur, I’m sure you’re itching to visit the bustling Malaysian capital. It’s the perfect place to start or end a big journey in Southeast Asia, as it’s a central hub with lots of options for flights.
Plus, it’s a fascinating place to visit with its distinct mix of cultures. Not only do you get to experience the local culture, but you can also basically travel to China and India while you’re here. That’s a three-for-one travel deal right there!
I’ve already been to Kuala Lumpur a few times and done most of the things on this list, but I’m still excited about visiting the city again in the future. Now that I’m living the digital nomad lifestyle, Kuala Lumpur is high on my list of possible home-bases around the world.
If you’ve been to KL and have some awesome recommendations on things to do, places to eat, or anything else, please feel free to leave a comment below and let us know.

Top 10 Tourist Attractions in French Guiana
Deep in equatorial South America, French Guiana is a department of France bordering Brazil, Suriname, and the Atlantic. It’s a land where old abuts fresh in dramatic incongruity. Rainforests shelter villages, while rockets zoom launched in the nation’s rewarding Space Centre. Cayenne, the funds, is a melting pot of Asian French, African, and Brazilian cultures, and if you go to between Epiphany and Ash Wednesday, during Carnival, you are able to join with parades every weekend.
  Tresor Nature Reserve
That the wildlife-rich marshes of Kaw cover thousands of square kilometers. The Tresór Nature Reserve is a great spot to watch black caimans, a smaller relative of the alligator, as well as a diversity of bird life such as the scarlet ibis and encompasses a massive area of the Kaw ecosystem. Travelers explore the wetlands on tours aboard local ships that vary in relaxation. Make sure you ask about seat cushions and shade canopies when reserving boat tours.
  Zoo de Guyane
A panoply of birds, such as toucans and macaws, sloths, agoutis, crocodiles, howler monkeys, anteaters, along with Jaguars are only some of the residents at Zoo de Guyane. The focus is native to French Guiana, so this is a superb place before you venture into the wilderness, to get acquainted with the wildlife of the country. Children and adults alike will adore the treetop walk, strung through a canopy of native woods, and also the children’s park is a hit with younger children.
  Îles du Salut
Nowadays, a trip to the islands, about 11 kilometers offshore from Kourou, brings his story to life. Most arrive at the former headquarters to the colony, the largest of the 3 islands and Île Royale. The buildings have been converted into hotels and tourist facilities, and an abundant variety of wildlife inhabits the island, such as macaws, monkeys, and agouti. In the gift shop, you can purchase postcards stamped”Devil’s Island,” while the haven now welcomes cruise ships where prisoners were once disgorged.
  Musée Départemental De Franconie
Close to the Place des Palmistes, Cayenne’s liveliest plaza, the Musée Départemental De Franconie offers a synopsis of the country’s history, as well as its fauna and flora. The museum tucks into a wooden Creole home constructed in the 19th century from the Franconie family. Exhibits cover colonial history, indigenous individuals, and the penal colony, but the indications are only in French. Are the Butterfly Room along with the largely stuffed black-caiman.
  Ilet la Mère
Monkeys are the main attraction at small Ilet la Mère, an island about a 30-minute boat trip just. These gentle little critters don’t have any fear; be ready for them to leap onto your shoulders and rifle through your bags. Besides photo ops with the monkeys, things to do on the island include swimming and basking, strolling around the trails on the small beach, and enjoying a picnic table, since the island does not have any amenities, but you must bring your own food. Tour operators provide both full-day and half-day trips to the island.
  Camp de la Transportation
At the border city of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, in the frightening Camp de la Transportation, inmates arrived for processing and transfer to penal colonies across the land. You can observe shackles and solitary confinement cells using tiny windows, after walking through the gates as Papillon, Alfred Dreyfus, and offenders. Past brutality’s impression lingers, although some of those histories that were grim has softened here. Self-guided tours are free, or for a fee, French-speaking guides can take you on a more detailed excursion.
  Guiana Space Centre
Apparently, both rockets and rainforests are a combination in French Guiana. In 1964, the French authorities chose this slice of shore near Kourou as a result of its low population density and distance from earthquake zones and storm tracks, to get a distance center. Three organizations operate here: the European Space Agency; the French Space Agency; a business venture, and Arianespace developing the Ariane rocket. Inspired by guides, you tour Ariane facilities and the Jupiter Control Centre and can see a film tracing the history of the Space Centre. The tours last about three hours.
  Remire-Montjoly Beach
You will find the greatest stretch of sea and sand of Cayenne at Remire-Montjoly if you’re looking for a shore fix. The beaches in French Guiana are typically wild, windswept affairs and this beach is not any different, but it does have a narrow, strip of gold shoreline that is very good for sunbathing, and hands and lush greenery throughout the sand, giving welcome patches of color. The waters aren’t ideal for swimming, but decent enough for a quick dip after a hike in the local nature reserve. You might spot sea turtles here. Fort Diamant presides on the point of this Cayenne Peninsula, and you might also see the ruins of an old sugar mill.
  Place Victor Schoelcher Market
For a spicy picture of local life, head to Cayenne’s main marketplace in Place Victor Schoelcher, a town square named after the guy who ended slavery in French Guiana. Exotic scents waft through the air, and the marketplace stalls brim with fruits, perfumes, fragrant spices, and snacks. You can relax with a hot bowl of noodle soup, sip juices, pick up some fresh-plucked produce, or buy souvenirs and locally produced handicrafts.
  Cacao
About the capital’s Comté River south, Cacao is a popular day trip from Cayenne. Hmong refugees transplanted from Laos in the 1970s will be the key ethnic group within this small village of stilt homes. Sunday is the best day to visit, once the popular market attributes Hmong embroidery and weaving, in addition to neighborhood noodle soups. The insect museum, Le Planeur Bleu, can be worth a stop for its extensive insect and butterfly collections and remarkable specimens of scorpions and spiders. You can embark on a scenic hike through the jungle or throw the river in a canoe.

Cartagena
Cartagena is one of the most beautiful cities in Colombia. If you visit Cartagena, it is mostly suggested that you remain in the stunning historical part of the city, surrounded by the city partitions which accommodate bars and offer views of the sea. Against Cartagena you can do a working day trip by boat to Playa Blanca and the Islas del Rosario, breath-getting shorelines with white sand and crystal blue waters. Cartagena is also house to the Volcan de Lodo el Totumo (also known as the mud volcano), a fun day out that involves totally submerging your self in a 1fivem high mud volcano and then washing it off in a local lake. Good for the pores and skin, nevertheless be warned, you can’t steer clear of getting fully cpreviously mentioneded in the mud.
Guatape
Guatape is a tiny village surrounded by lakes that can be frequented as a day trip from Medellin, relating to a two hour bus journey absent. Guatape presents stunning landscapes and is home to the Peñon de Guatape, a huge stone measuring over 220m in top. The views from the top are well benefit the 650 stairs it normally takes to reach it.
Medellin
If you are making ready on likely to Colombia close to Xmas time, visiting Medellin to see the Christmas lighting is a must. Even if not, visiting Medellin is nonetheless a must. It really is the only city in Colombia with a metro, making it very basic to get around and visit all of the many websites there are to see, from the metro cable giving incredible views of the city, to the interactive museums and parks, botanical gardens, many churches and cathedral, and Plaza Botero showcasing Botero’s mentioned statues. Individuals are simply a couple of of the many points of interest Medellin has to offer.
San Gil
If abnormal sports activities are your thing, then San Gil is the place to go. Paragliding, bungee leaping, rafting and much more are on offer in this small city in Santander. There are beautiful villages that can be visited nearby, this sort of as Barichara and Guane, also as Parque Chicamocha, a nationwide park with amazing views and a cable car that travels throughout the Chicamocha Canon.
Santa Marta
There are many stuff to do in and around Santa Marta. Local Taganga is a great place to do scuba diving classes with its many diving educational institutions. Seashore Playa Grande which can be attained by a brief wander or by boat is part of the famous and very well-known Tayrona national park. From Santa Marta you can also do the Ciudad Perdida (Misplaced Urban) trek, a 5-day trek via historic ruins, historic sites, mountains and amazing scenery.
Push Recommendation
I contain three tips that please bear in brain after visiting Colombia in purchase to stay risk-free and generate the most of your trip:
Taxis
There are often cabs accessible that you can hail down. Basically make certain it is a authorized taxi – you can inform this by seeking for a card which will be over the back again of the driver or passenger seat with a photograph of the driver and all of his details. If you are doubtful, do not get in it and call a taxi. Whilst some cities have taxi meters in all of the taxis, other people don’t. If you don’t see a taxi meter when you get in, make certain you negotiate the fee when you get in to avoid getting cheated.
Personalized possessions
Though Colombia is frequently safe, you should still be vigilant when it’ll come to valuables and other belongings. Consider not to present income, cameras, telephones and so forth., specifically in silent streets with few individuals around or at night time. You aren’t at a high danger of currently being mugged, but it does happen and it is much better to be safe than sorry, so just notice.
Bus trips
Most bus journeys in Colombia involve high windy roads, generally taken at high pace by the bus motorists, so if you undergo from travel illness (or even if you don’t) try and have some travel sickness drugs with you. Way too, try and negotiate bus costs when you go to buy the tickets. Most businesses don’t have set prices and they’ve a tendency to vastly overcharge tourists – if achievable, try and get a indigenous to buy your tickets for you to get a better price.
Distributors
Look at out for street providers, or people marketing items on the beach. They can get very pushy and will not likely take no for an response, so if you happen to be not intrigued, try and avoid eye touch and viewing their goods. They’ll also try to overcharge you so never acknowledge the first price they give you for some thing.

In the heart of the Amazon, women travel by boat to the wild town of Iquitos before driving deep into the jungle.
Inside thatched huts, the symphony of frogs and insects builds to a crescendo and the jungle seems to come in through the netted walls, expanding like sacred geometry. By candlelight, shamans sing while pouring the ayahuasca, a foul-tasting brew that will provoke "la purga" — vomiting and diarrhoea.
Its effects — psychedelic visions — are claimed to be profoundly healing for some. But it carries risks, from psychosis to sexual assault. Several people have died through ayahuasca tourism, largely from other plant-based brews prepared by shamans.
But in an era where experiences and "bucket lists" are prioritised over savings and mortgages, psychedelic tours to the Amazon are sprouting like ferns in the jungle. In Peru, where taking ayahuasca is legal, there are up to 100 retreats in the Iquitos region alone
Women the new psychedelic explorers?
Ayahuasca is regarded by indigenous communities as a sacred feminine plant, so it's ironic that female exploration of the medicine tends to be framed as a wellness fad, as though serious self-discovery is only for men.
It's not helped by the fact that underground ceremonies have raged through yoga salons from Williamsburg to Topanga Canyon, while celebrity "aya seekers" include Chelsea Handler (who drinks the brew in her Netflix series Chelsea Does), Susan Sarandon, Tori Amos, Trudie Styler and Lindsay Lohan — who credits it with helping her cope with a miscarriage and "the wreckage" of her life.
Then there are the high-end retreats offering spas, laundry service and Wi-Fi, for about $5000 for 10 days, not including flights.
Writing in The New Yorker, Ariel Levy surmised: "If cocaine expressed and amplified the speedy, greedy ethos of the 1980s, ayahuasca reflects our present moment — what we might call the Age of Kale."
That description infuriates Zoe Helene, who runs the educational advocacy group Cosmic Sister. Formerly a performing artist, she grew up in New Zealand and now lives west of Boston, where her life's work is promoting "psychedelic feminism"— women's empowerment and healing through psychedelic plants.
"This is not tourism," she says emphatically. "You don't say, 'Hey, we'd like to buy tickets to that island with the monkeys and take selfies.'"
"It's also not a psychedelic festival where you dress in sexy costumes and dance until sunrise."
Cosmic Sister has developed three psychedelic feminism educational grants to support women in the field of psychedelics. The most recent, announced this July, is aimed at women tackling sexism, racism, wellness and sustainability through their psychedelic work. Then there's the Plant Spirit Grant, for women who want to participate in ceremonies with Shipibo shamans. Previous recipients include an academic, a social worker and a physician.
'Psychedelic feminism'
Jennifer Owens was 27 when she visited the village of Písac. The rope access technician from Wollongong has a history of depression and credits the ayahuasca with treating her panic attacks.
As it took effect, she believed herself to be communicating with the ayahuasca herself.
"She zoomed into my brain, showing me all the synapses and pathways lighting up. There was a pathway that needed redirection, and she dragged it to go in a different way. I asked her about the fate of this world and she took me out to space. She said, 'It's fine! I'll show you.' Time sped up and the world slowly decayed, and then was reborn bright and beautiful."
Meg Horan had turned 40 and finished up working for a record label in Australia. Before she started a new life in Iceland, she took a trip to the jungle.
"Other people there had very specific intentions. I just wanted to begin to be kinder to myself," she says.
She had long conversations with her critical voice; it was hard work and required maintenance out of the jungle, including meditation and mindfulness
"You can't just trip your balls off and expect everything to be better," she warns.
"It's a constant journey of self-improvement, not an instant cure-all."
The dark side of 'aya seeking'
Ayahuasca has also found itself in the news for all the wrong reasons. While pure DMT has very low toxicity, some of the other brews involved in similar ceremonies can be deadly for the inexperienced. In 2015, Canadian Jennifer Logan died from a pulmonary edema and Kiwi Matthew Dawson-Clarke had a heart attack after drinking a tobacco-based "purge" medicine believed to rid the body of toxins and anxiety.
"The danger is not knowing what the shaman's methods are," says Dr Bright. "They may add angel's trumpet plants or tobacco. They have been drinking these brews since childhood — we haven't."
Another risk is those with a family history of psychotic disorders may find drinking ayahuasca provokes an episode.
Then there are the reports of sexual assault. Taking a powerful psychedelic under the guidance of an unfamiliar man of influence is a risk for women.
"There are many recorded cases of shamans who intentionally seek out sexual relations with participants," anthropologist Daniela Peluso wrote in the book Ayahuasca Shamanism in the Amazon and Beyond.
"For these particular men, sex with participants is premeditated and part of a routine."
Lily Ross, a writer and educator in sexual violence resistance, spent nearly a month at a village in central Ecuador in 2012, where she was given brugmansia, which kept her in a fog of confusion. She says the shaman was persistent that their sexual bond was the will of god, and that he isolated and raped her repeatedly.
She says those working in the ayahuasca community must "out" abusers and put preventative measures in place.
Ayahuasca as therapy?
There have long been clinical trials exploring the use of psychedelics in therapeutic settings. If all approvals go to plan, MDMA will be used in PTSD treatment in the next few years, while US trials have tested LSD for anxiety. But trials using ayahuasca are harder to get off the ground.
"Ethics committees have an issue with administering plant-based medicines because it's much more quantifiable to say, 'This is 99.9 per cent human-grade LSD'," says Dr Stephen Bright, senior lecturer in addiction at Edith Cowan University and co-founder of Australia's Psychedelic Research in Science & Medicine (PRISM).
In 1995, a Brazilian religious society called Uniao do Vegetal, which uses ayahuasca for spiritual development, held an international conference to present their research. People who had regularly been drinking ayahuasca reported better psychological functioning and that the medicine had changed their lives, be they men who were engaging in domestic violence, or people who were alcohol-dependent.
'Spiritual tourism' white-washing the Amazon?
Traditional villages have often been battered by extractive industries. Could ayahuasca tourism be further obliterating indigenous culture?
Certainly, retreats bring money into impoverished communities, although to different degrees. Some are staffed almost exclusively by westerners. Others employ locals and establish permaculture projects with neighbouring villages.
Vidal Jaquehua, a Quechua native, told Vice that ayahuasca tourism is changing his home. As a result, his own tour company, Adios Adventure Travel, doesn't include ayahuasca retreats.
"We don't offer those trips because we respect our people, the costumes, traditions, and believe there are rituals that need to be understood and respected."
His philosophy is to "let the people practise it and don't make a business out of it."
Ms Helene believes it's possible to support cultural preservation through mutually respectful cultural exchange. "The conversation should be about defending the rights of indigenous people while supporting them to champion the environment they steward," she says.
Through Cosmic Sister she supports local women such as Kleylli Vargas Urquia, a Shipibo forestry student who received a grant; Estella Pangosa Sinacay, a shaman who runs the Aya Madre Healing Center; and local textile artists, whose work she promotes.
Ayahuasca on home turf
Perhaps drinking ayahuasca in Australia would carry fewer risks — and there are local plants with the same active ingredients. But DMT is a prohibited substance in Australia, so making a brew is drug manufacture and serving to others is supply.
Dr Bright believes the safest option would be for the Therapeutic Goods Administration to regulate ayahuasca, though those wheels are not in motion.
"Without any regulation you're playing Russian roulette," he says. "You're trusting word of mouth or what you've read on Reddit," he says.
The Department of Health said in a statement:
"Deaths have occurred when taking ayahuasca. Some deaths are attributable to erratic behaviour responding to hallucinations. People have also been robbed and sexually assaulted when incapacitated under the influence of ayahuasca. In addition, the interaction of MAOIs with other drugs may present significant drug-drug interactions."

JOLIET – Former Joliet resident Corey Grant is living in Los Angeles, California, and making movies for a living. His recent release, “Illicit,” is about the dynamics that occur when both a husband and wife are simultaneously having affairs, a topic Grant found intriguing. Usually movies portray either the husband or the wife – most often the husband, Grant said. “How about both at the same time and see what happens?” Grant said. Grant studied mass communication at Norfolk State University in Virginia, and he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1999. He then worked for an NBC affiliate, all the while dreaming of studying film at Howard University in Washington, D.C. It was a dream borne from watching science fiction movies during childhood. “Being a kid, filmmaking was very magical,” Grant said. “I grew up with ‘Star Wars’ and the golden age of filmmaking. It left a lasting effect on me.” But it was during Joliet West High School drama class that Grant fell in love with directing and scriptwriting, because a teacher insisted her students do both. Grant saw his words come alive. And he liked it. Grant finally wound up at Howard University, where he earned his master’s in 2003 and he made his first feature film. He played it at a 2,000-seat theater at the university, charging $10 to $12 a ticket.
