The Buick muscle cars known as the GS 400, and the mighty GSX were known as "Gentleman's Cars". Buicks proved high performing in the sixties, and early part of the seventies. Any classic Buick fan will tell you that Buick's marketing strategy was below the Cadillac. Buicks were a noble breed, and often referred to as cars a doctor would be driving. Buicks birth into the muscle car industry happened in 1965.
Buick offered Gran Sport options for the Wildcat, and the Riviera. These vehicles were splendid manly-type cars, but not your classic muscle machine. This version changed drastically with the birth of the Buick Skylark that shared its design with the Tempest that Pontiac used for the foundation of the popular GTO. The company came out with a mid-sized sedan with mid-sized performance in the middle eighties with the GNX, and the Grand National that contained V-6 engines.

Before the Electra 225, the Limited, and the Roadmaster was the "Big Boys" of Buick's legendary lineup. In 1959, these cars were renamed the Electra. The car earned its name "deuce and a quarter" due to the overall length of the nameplate which stemmed 225 inches. These models shared six window hardtops with the Cadillac Fleetwood.
A standard two-door convertible and a standard four-door hardtop shared a stripped chassis. 144 of these cars were produced between the years 1959, and 1960. In 1962, the Wildcat evolved after mating the Invicta long full-size two-door hardtop body with the high performance 435 hp version of the 401 cu in Nailhead V-8 which was known as the Wildcat 445 for producing 445 ft. * 1bf of torque. It contained the Dynaflow transmission, and distinctive side trimming, distinctive emblems and a vinyl roof.

Buick has used the name "Wildcat" for five vehicles that stem from the fifties, eighties, and nineties. The 1953-54-55 versions were designed under the watchful eye of Harley Earl. The 1985 version contains a mid-sized engine, and is an all-wheel-drive sports car with sporting a V-6 engine. The 1997 version contains carbon fiber instead of the viscous wood grain trim, and the engine was modified.
In 1982, The Regal Grand National was introduced to the market. The name derived from the NASCAR Grand National racing series. Buick won the Manufacturers Cup in 1981-82, and they wanted to flaunt their success. The company had only intended to produce one hundred of these cars, but they ran with the plan to retrofit 215 Regals with the GN and GNX package.
The Reatta was the first advertised two-seater of Buick. It was deemed a luxury sports coupe that was crafted in Lansing Michigan and sold by GM from 1988 to 1991. The design was based on a shorter version of the GM E platform used in Cadillac Eldorado's and the Oldsmobile Toronado's. It was a compact sports car, but sadly, it was only offered with automatic transmission.
Buick Riviera GS, 1965. The Grand Sport version of the Riviera was introduced with the first generation featuring a Super Wildcat V8 and stiffer, heavy-duty suspension. Sergio Pininfarina declared it "one of the most beautiful American cars ever built”

The particular Quick List Of American Muscle Vehicles
By David Ashton
When I first compiled this list, it was really for my own benefit so I could have a quick reference to all of the major American muscle cars produced between the mid-60s and mid-70s. Basically, the most popular makes and years for that golden age of high displacement muscle machines. Now it’ s time to pass it on to you good folks, so you have a quick reference to start to see the most popular muscle cars at a glance.
Now, I know there will be a couple of exceptions here and there missing, so if you see any that are not included, please comment below so that we can add them and make the best list on the net of all things muscle car. For the Ultimate list of muscle cars go here .

2019’s Top Rides: Part 3/Buick Regal GS, Subaru Ascent and Golf R
By Michael Hozjan
Buick Regal GS AWD: Buick gets it right
At 12, I wanted to be a car designer. Fate however had different plans for me. With an eye for automotive design, I grew up loving Buicks; from the ’57 Special to the ’59 Invicta, with the ’64 Wildcat stealing my heart time and again. Cadillacs took a close second, Fords were ok but I found Chevs too feminine. Buicks, were masculine with broad shouldered front fenders and creased lines, personifying the designing cues of GM greats, Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell.
Then came the Riviera. One snowy December afternoon as I headed to my post office, there on St. Lawrence Boulevard, with six inches of snow on the ground sat a ’65 Riviera. My heart skipped several beats and I must have studied its lines for what seemed like an eternity.
Well into the ‘70s there were some noteworthy designs that came out of Buick’s design studios however, the last four decades have been anything but exciting. That has all changed with the launch of the Regal GS – the sexiest Buick to come out of Detroit in, well the last four decades.
The Grand Sport designation is nothing new to the Buick line up, having been associated with ‘70s era muscle cars but this is the first time that it has been used in a European sports sedan context. The stylish GS goes up against some well established rivals like the Acura TLX, Lexus ES, BMW 3 series and the like, a tough field to say the least. The Regal GS is more than just good looks, it’s a bona fide sports sedan. In fact a rebadged, German built, Opel Insignia, so the GS starts with the right genes. European engineered handling makes it the best tarmac gripping Buick ever.
Red Brembo brake calipers immediately tell everyone that this is not your typical Buick.
While different drive options/trim levels are available elsewhere around the globe, we Canucks get only one trim/drive option- also the most desirable one - the all-wheel-drive version motivated by the 310 horsepower DOHC, 3.6L V6 with variable valve timing punching out 282 lb-ft of torque through a 9-speed automatic.
Entry price is $44,045, my tester came with the Buick Experience Package ($3,495) that included the moonroof, a Bose premium 8-speaker sound system, wireless charging, an 8” touch screen, HD radio, LED leveling headlights, The Driver Confidence Package (yes you read that right) at $1,995 includes adaptive cruise, forward collision alert with automatic braking, lane keep assist, front pedestrian braking and heads up display. The Ebony Twilight Metallic paint was a premium option at $495.
The all-wheel-drive gets a torque vectoring rear axle, which only improves traction in slippery conditions and makes the Buick eat up the corners. Buick has also given us three driving modes to choose from, Touring, Sport and GS
Inside you’ve got one color choice, black. The supportive Recaros have a massage feature as well as being heated/cooled. Both driver’s and passenger seats have 14 adjustments to suit your body, including adjustable bolsters. Following with the German sport sedan traits, it includes a flat-bottomed steering wheel.
Rear seat passengers get ample legroom, but headroom is tight for taller occupants. With 30.cu.ft of space under the hatch with the rear seats up, with over 60 cu.ft with the rear seats folded, it betters many compact crossovers!
Is it perfect?
Non-functional air intakes in the front valance are mickey-mouse and a step backwards. Why not leave them open and help cool the brakes? No spare tire but a useless tire fix kit –that’ll help when you have a blow out or bend a wheel on Quebec’s pot holes. On the comical side, the audio system had mixed up the Cirius station numbers it’s 60s on 6 and not 660s on six….and the same could be said for 50s on 5 not 550s on 5, as well as 70s, 80s and 90s.
You can go through the gears manually with the console mounted shifter but paddle shifters would have been a nice touch to compliment the smooth 9-speed automatic.
Will the GS steal buyers away from BMW? I hardly doubt it but it does give of us a formidable option to keep our performance dollars with domestic manufacturers, and the GS buyer has nothing to be apologetic for.

Subaru Ascent: If at first you don’t succeed…
If you thought that Subaru already had a large SUV you’re right. The magic word here being had. The B9 Tribeca, later shortened to just Tribeca debuted in 2005 to, lets just say a less than stellar sales, and by 2014 had moved into the automotive history books of what once was.
It takes guts to admit that you were wrong, and it takes even big cojones to come back with a similar sized vehicle. Truth be told the SUV market has also changed over the last decade with SUVs growing increasingly larger, just like the population. Subaru appears to have been ahead of its time back in 2005 when 3-row SUV’s didn’t proliferate our roads, and minivans still reigned supreme for getting the platoon to school. But times have changed and so the new Ascent is the company’s answer to the latest trend.
The Ascent is also Subaru’s largest vehicle to date, with 142 mm longer wheelbase and 134 mm longer in length than the Tribeca, so yes passenger comfort has been greatly increased. The midsize SUV is built on the company’s Global Platform, a chassis that is easily adaptable; serving as the basis for everything from their Impreza and Crosstrek to the Ascent.
Available in four trim levels – Convenience, Touring, Limited and Premier - with the entry level 8-passenger Convenience starting at a meager $36,695. Regardless of trim, there’s a new 2.4L direct-injected, turbocharged boxer four cylinder dolling out 260 horses and 277 lb-ft of torque through the High-torque Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission).
Talk to anyone who’s ever driven a Subie in less than ideal conditions and they’ll swear by the symmetrical full-time all-wheel-drive system. A new feature, X-Mode, pushes the traction envelope even further; at the push of a button, it monitors and controls four different vehicle dynamics, including engine, transmission, torque splitting and braking.
There’s a lot of standard driver-assistance technology in each Ascent without having to step up to trim levels, Items like automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist through the company’s EyeSight system. The base model gets a 6.5 inch infotainment screen while upper trim buyers will see an 8 inch screen. GPS however is only available in the two higher end trims (Limited and Premier). Both Touring and Limited are available in either seven or eight passenger configurations with captain’s chairs taking up the second row. My tester, the Premier trim comes only with the second row captains chairs. While all trims get heated front buckets it’s only the two higher trims that pamper their second row passengers with heated outboard seats. The third row looks a lot more inviting than some of it’s competitors but it’s still on the tight side with limited leg room. Still bear in mind this is a mid-size seven passenger and the seats are padded and comfortable to keep the small fry happy for longer drives. Oh and a pair of third-row USB charging ports become available in the Limited trim and are in addition to the standard two you’ll find in the front and second rows.
Rear cover blind and tow loop are stowed neatly under the cargo bay’s floor, the latter an option on some pricier suvs
.
Whether you’re out in the boonies or negotiating city streets, the Ascent doesn’t feel like a large bulky SUV. With above average handling and a minimum of body roll for a three-row SUV, Subaru’s use of the boxer engine and its advantageous low center of gravity immediately become apparent. It’s stable, with a soft luxurious ride and is generally quiet during normal highway cruising. But it does get loud when pushed hard.
Is it perfect?
The drone of the CVT does get annoying but once you get passed that, the Ascent is typically Subaru; it does everything what it’s supposed to and does it well. I averaged 9.8L/100 km which is unprecedented in a 7-passenger sport ute. It may not be overly luxurious but you get what you pay for. I know my Subaru driving friends will all be looking at the Ascent when the time comes to turn in their current drives, and that alone will keep this big Subaru around for a long time to come.

Volkswagen Golf R: You’ll want one
If you’ve missed my installment of the Rabbit GTI, I urge you to scroll down the page and have a read.
Now take the GTI and turn it up a notch, or three. The formula for the Golf R is very simple; take one German built spacious hatchback that already has solid, tight handling, and add gobbs of turbocharged horses to a 2.0L inline four cylinder. How many ponies? Two eighty-eight to be exact – enough to propel you well past the posted speed limit in less time than it takes you to say posted speed limit. Now stir in all-wheel drive to put all that power to the ground. Slam it to the ground for added handling. Dress it up with killer 19” wheels.
Choose between the 6-speed manual available for $42,495 or the 7-speed dual clutch automatic with Tiptronic for $43,895. Now go have the most fun you can with your clothes on.
Doesn’t look like it but there’s nearly 300 horses in there
Quad exhaust tips tell you this is no ordinary Golf
The Golf R is everything you want in a performance sedan and then some. It makes no sense in a country with posted speed limits, but then neither do Porches, Ferraris and the like.

They were designed at the height of muscle cars - so it wasn’t any surprise that GM’s 1968-1972 A-body mid-sizes all had muscle car overtones. But one of these cars was not like the others - at least, not in appearance. The ’68-’69 Buick Skylarks and Specials have been uncharitably described by some critics as “not entirely cohesive.” Buyers disagreed - the Buick A-cars had a record year in 1968, and they did what they were meant to - look like smaller senior Buicks (LeSabre, Wildcat, Electra). - The ’68-’69 Skylarks were characterized in front and in back by complex bumper/fascia arrangements that moved inward towards the center of the car, particularly at the rear, but it was the sides that captured most of the attention. The ’67 full-size Buicks had revived the brand’s famous #sweepspear - a character line running from the front fender to the rocker ahead of the rear wheel, then kicked up again - after years of sober straight lines. It first appeared on the 1949 Roadmaster Riviera and had been a Buick trademark in the 1950s, only to be swept away by 1959’s space-age delta-wings. - Under Buick style chief Dave Holls (and possibly from the pen of stylist Paul Deeson), the sweep returned in mild form on the big Buicks. It had only a most modest kick ahead of the rear wheels, but made big Buicks look more distinctive. The treatment was applied to the A-body Special/Skylark for ’68 to bring them in line with the big cars. The sweep was more radical on the A, sweeping back to the rear wheels and not kicking very far up. Broad, clean quarter panels and optional fender skirts gave it a heavy look out back. Despite the the potent Grand Sport (GS350 or GS400) and the base Special (on its way out - the Skylark handily outsold it), these cars were seen as more upscale than other As, indeed, they were several hundred dollars costlier than their Olds siblings. - The Buick studio was taken over by Don Lasky in early ’68 and in 1970 the Skylark was restyled to be more conventional (as were the ’71 big Buicks, aside from Riviera); and nobody’s ever rushed to claim credit for the ’68/’69 cars, but customers liked them - sales were up 20% from ’67 and stayed strong in ’69. https://www.instagram.com/p/B19Cs7Gl0Mi/?igshid=1wf2l1fcqd0ia

Could Buick Use Muscle Car Names For New Vehicles?
By Dave Ashton
Buick are currently going through some changes with GM introducing new models to consolidate the brand. Just like other manufacturers who have revived muscle car classics, Buick could dig into their past and revive some classic names, even if they don’t end up being direct descendants of the former.
Could Buick follow the same route as Dodge and revive classics such as the Charger and the Challenger with tons of power and performance? It’s not out of the question as Buick had some mighty beasts back in the day such as the GSX, but it’s more than likely classic names would be fixed to more general use vehicles, but you never know…..
Here are some of the classic Buick muscle cars which could be revived for the modern day. Let’s just wish Buick go out on a limb and produce a modern interpretation of some of their high performance classics.
Buick Riviera
The Riviera has been a long-standing name for Buick, but it’s not seen the light of day since the 1999 version. the second-generation versions from 1966-1970 had some beefy engines with 425ci.(7.0 L) and loads of torque.
Buick Skylark GS
Quite a cute name, but the second generation from 1968 to 1972 had plenty of muscle car DNA. A 455ci. (7.46 L) V8 provided plenty of grunt, with even a four-door station wagon version available.
Buick Gran Sport
If you think about classic muscle cars produced by Buick it’s usually variations of the Gran Sport that come to mind. Buick produced luxury and performance, but they also had the classic looks of the era. The 1970 GS 455 had a Buick 455ci. (7.5 L) V8 with around 360BHP. As the ‘GS’ was in quite a few variations such as the stage I and stage II and a GSX Performance and Handling package, there should be lots of scope for offering performance packages today.
Buick Grand National and GNX
The 1980’s won’t exactly go down in history as producing classic muscle cars, but the Grand National and GNX were definite standouts. The Grand National had that 80s boxy appearance, but it also had plenty of performance. The 1987 GNX ‘Grand National Experimental’ was produced with help from McLaren and housed a turbocharged powerplant producing around 300 bhp. The GNX battered other performance vehicles of its time and nicknamed the ‘Darth Vader’s Car’, this limited edition model would be a great contender to bring back to life.
Salon Auto Sport de Quebec Celebrates 50th Anniversary
By Michael Hozjan
I doubt very much that when the Piston Poppers Car Club introduced custom car shows to Montreal and Quebec City anyone of them thought the shows would still be around fifty years later. Yes there were other shows before, but none in the grand scale of the Piston Popper’s celebrations.
Today the Salon Auto Sport de Quebec [city] is the province’s oldest continuously running indoor car show. It has succeeded where others died, it has withstood changing trends and transcended generations of car enthusiasts, and this year was no exception, bringing in people of all ages.
Three years ago, with his eyes set on retirement, Mr. Jacques Picard who had partnered with founding Piston Popper member Aurele Collette pictured below fifth from left sold the show to the region’s drag race promoter Martin D’Anjou who seems prepared to carry it for the next few decades.
Stealing the show were the three handcrafted beauties from Rick Dore’s stable of creativity, the Illusion (above, forefront) the Black Pearl (the show’s poster child) and the Shangri-La, below.
Our old friend Apostolis, better known as, “Spanky” of V8 Custom Guitars (left) recently joined forces with Rick Dore of RD Kustoms fame to create two wild guitars. Spanky’s wood carved creations capture the cars’ features down to the minutest detail and pay homage to Rick’s rolling works of art. While still in rough form they were unveiled for the first time at the show to tease show goers of what to expect.
Martin D’Anjou commissioned The Black Pearl inspired guitar to be auctioned off later this year with the proceeds going to the Quebec Cancer Foundation and Rick Dore hopes to sell the Illusion to whoever buys the car, which will also go on sale later this year.

Some eye candy
Gille Villeneuve’s Formula Ford courtesy of the museum by the same name
It’s been six years since I first met Jean-Francois Launier (above left with yours truly) in Detroit. He stopped by the Adrenaline booth to chat and sign some autographs. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, let me quickly just say he is Canada’s foremost custom coach builder and only the second Canadian to win the prestigious Ridler Award. The Ridler is given only to the crème-de-la-crème of builders and JF was on the short list twice before winning it with outrageous ’64 Buick Riviera, taking the trophy back to home to Osoyoos BC. (you can catch his journey to the Ridler in Klassic Plus issue #3)
I kept hearing K.I.T.T. calling my name all weekend. The star of Knight Rider was one of the cars in a movie/tv show cars display.
After hearing my name being callled by K.I.T.T. I began looking for Daisy Duke after seeing her Jeep, but no such luck.
More eye candy
Yes the gears actually work to engage the clutch and work the carb. Another insane creation from our friend Andre Bobinas of Atelier AD
The other top hitter at the show was JF Launier’s latest show stopper, an Acadian Canso. That’s a Canuck version of Chevrolet’s Nova.

It seems that I’m always photographing JF Launier’s team on their knees cleaning up the car and display.
If you would like to learn more about the Piston Poppers and their contribution to the hobby, and some fantastic shots of the era by club member Frank Pedder, you can still get a copy of Klassic Plus Issue #1.
